LUX DESTINATIONS

BARNSLEY RESORT A Getaway That’s Not Far Away Story by AMELIA PAVLIK

TAKING IN HOLIDAY DECORATIONS and lights while enjoying hot cocoa and cookies. Enjoying a craft beer in a beer garden while watching your favorite SEC football teams battle it out on the field. Enjoying a meltaway-the-stress massage at the spa. If this sounds like your ideal way to spend a late fall weekend, it’s time to get away to a place known as Barnsley Resort. Tucked away from the world on the north Georgia countryside, the resort is an easy 1.5 hour drive from Atlanta. As you drive up to this English-style village of cottages along tree-covered lanes, you’d never imagine the tragic love story behind it. In the 1840s, businessman and cotton broker Godfrey Barnsley began construction on an ornate villa for the love of his life, Julia—on the land where the resort now stands. Though his beloved died before the home was completed, the home and elaborate gardens was enjoyed by the family for decades before falling into disrepair. After years of ups and downs with the villa, the cozy resort village was built to compliment the ruins of the original home and its museum, becoming a popular destination for everything from a couples getaways to company retreats.
