Welcome to the first issue of “MOVEMENT” in this issue we are going to be looking at Art movements, specifically Futurism. The theme for this is movement, for this I wanted to show movement with the body so I chose to focus it on myself and my own personal interest “Parkour” (P5-P6) the next stage will be about “Stop Motion” this is also another hobbie of mine, we talk about what it is, the history, the classics & present animations, there is also an indepth tutorial on how to create your own Stop Motion video (P11-P12). There are some very inspirational artists in this issue and we hope you enjoy what you see/read.

Futurism was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. It was largely an Italian phenomenon. The founder of Futurism and its most influential personality was the Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, though there were parallel movements in Russia, England and elsewhere. The Futurists practiced in every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, theatre, film, fashion, textiles, literature, music, architecture and even gastronomy.

PARKOUR The word comes from the french “Parcours” which means “the way through” or “the path”. Parkour’s simplest definition is getting from point “A” to point “B” using the obstacles in your path to increase your efficiency and flow, after some years people started to be more creative, instead of always trying to get to point “A” they wanted to be more creative and explore more creative explosive moves. The group that began this was called the Yamakazi lead by Sebastian Foucan who gave it the name “Free running”. Parkour has become the fastest growing sport in the UK, The starting point of this was helped by Urban Freeflow (UF) established in 2003, UF were the first professional organization within in the PK/FR community, they have been the driving force behind the UK growth for over 7 years.

there are still mixed feeling about the way people go about Parkour, some say practicing parkour must have no flips of any sort others feel its being misused

it’s not a sport or even a dicipline/ art it’s a life style

to make money. Others like me yes still think dont do it just because of the money, but if it’s something you love doing and if there is money to be made then why not, doing a job you love is the best thing. WFPF is an organization in spreading the word of this, by brining together like minded people who enjoy doing what they do, because it’s not a sport or even a dicipline/art it’s a life style (Ryan Doyle). One of these people is Daniel Ilabaca he is one of the most respected practitioners in the PK community, his whole look on Parkour and movement is incredible, quote “ I no longer fear anything”. Daniel is always looking for new ways to move last year he went on a tour promoting a game “Beyond the Brink” quote “I hope to see many different variations on the discipline. Meeting different people, experiencing their cultures and training in their cities will be a fantastic opportunity to see how Parkour can be expressed differently whilst sharing a common bond of movement”. www.parkour.com www.wfpf.com www.foucan.com

Once I gathered my information about futurism and movement, I then began to think, what can be done with this, something new and challenging.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Make Your Own

The first thing you need is, of course, an idea. Try to stick with something simple for your first one–any action that can be split up into smaller parts works well. While brainstorming, keep in mind that you can expect to shoot around 10 photos for every second of film. Second, you’ll need a digital camera. Finally, in order to turn your images into an animated video you will need video editing software like Apple’s iMovie or QuickTime Pro. There are also a number of free and shareware programs for Mac, Windows, and Linux

STEP 1: SHOOT YOUR ANIMATION Let’s say, for example, that you would like to make a apple eat itself . Start at the beginning: place the apple somewhere and take your first photo. Remember, you want to use camera (still frame) mode, not movie mode. Using a tripod and only moving your object will make it appear as though your object is moving through your frame. Keeping the object in the same general area in each frame by moving the camera along with it will make it appear as though you are traveling with the object. It’s up to you. After you’ve taken your first photograph, take a chunk of the apple place back in it’s original place and take another photo. continue doing this until it’s gone. You can manipulate your object in creative ways to add visual interest to your film, just make sure that whatever movement your object makes is done slowly over several frames. Finally, if you make a mistake while shooting, delete that picture on your camera and take another. This will save you from having to edit your film later.

STEP 2: UPLOAD YOUR PHOTOS Now that you’ve captured your images, you’ll need to get them onto your computer. This process varies widely from camera to camera and computer to computer. Consult your camera guide and software “Help” if you are unfamiliar with this process. First, import your image files to your documents from the camera, and give them their own album. Then choose which software you are going to be using e.g. IMOVIE, Final Cut, premier or Movie Maker, For my animation I used Movie Maker as there was no need for amazing effects, plus it’s more simpler to use.

STEP 3: ANIMATE YOUR PHOTOS In order for your animated short to play properly, you must tell which every software you are using how long you want each photo to appear before showing the next one. It’s kind of like creating a slideshow, except instead of giving each image a few seconds, you give it only a fraction of a second. The timing you choose will affect the overall tempo and length of your film. For my apple example I used a duration of 0.125 seconds. setting it to the lowest will make it seem more like a film rarther than a bunch of photos going from slide to slide If you use the lowest setting, you can easily estimate how many photos you’ll need to create a movie of a given length. In our example we used around 400 photos, for 40 seconds of video. Once you have set the duration to your liking simply add music or you wanted to, Save your animation and publish it as a video. Once your video is finished, hit play. You just created your first stop-motion animated video

Toby BEHIND THE EDIT

MUYBRIDGE

Eadweard Muybridge (1830 – 1904) was an English photographer who spent most of his life in the United States. He is known for his work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion, and hiszoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the perforated film strip. In 1872, Governor of California Leland Stanford, a businessman and race-horse owner, had a question on whether all four of a horse’s hooves are off the ground at the same time during a gallop. He took it upon himself to prove it scientifically. Stanford hired Muybridge to do the job. In 1877, Muybridge settled Stanford’s question with a single photographic negative showing Stanford’s racehorse airborne in the middle of a gallop. This negative was lost, but it survives through woodcuts made at the time. By 1878, Muybridge then decided to take it further to get a more accurate result, and did so by successfully photographing a horse in fast motion. This was done by setting up multiple cameras set on trip wires to capture the horse at every moment. The series of photos is said to be the earliest forms of videography. Here we can see Muybridge’s experiment of a horse galloping using videography/Photography Knowing that these were the first ways to capture fast motion in those day is pretty inspiring I like how Muybridge took it further to see how much further he could go with his work Muybridge was the revolution in fast motion videography

The PEN stories a one of the best stop motion videos I have ever seen, these guys worked to the max, shooting a grand total of 80,000 images from both videos. Get the info of both videos and see how they did it with a “behind the edit”

PEN

One year after The PEN Story they made a second stop motion project: 355 pictures were taken, all printed in billboard size and shot again. The video was produced with the Olympus PEN itself. No tricks or computer animation at all.

This is the PEN Story in stop motion. they show a massive 60.000 pictures, developed 9.600 prints and shot over 1.800 pictures again. There inspiration came from Mr Taijin Takeuchi. While they were looking for a way to realise a story describing “a journey through time” based on printed images, they were inspired by Mr Takeuchi’s brilliant work. For this reason they intentionally quoted his work in there little movie while showing full respect to his original idea, but sadly didn’t get permission at first so he was added to the credits.

VIDEO 1 VIDEO 2 BEHIND THE EDIT

These images are from my very first stop motion video, it consisted of a simple apple. as it was my first i didnt want to make it to diffuclt. the background is just my backroom. the camera i used was my nikon coolpix L100 along with a tripod.

The basic way i went about this was, to keep it in one place then every time i needed it to look like it was eating it’s self i simply ate some. loosing more and more of the apple until i was at the core. this clip was on for about 10 seconds with around 70 images taken
