welcome It’s a privilege to welcome you to this beautiful region of southeastern Pennsylvania, where our towns share a common Main Street and our people share a strong sense of community. The Upper Perkiomen Valley is a vibrant and growing community with small-town charm and an enviable pace of living. Just outside of town, the rolling hills are sprinkled with family farms, old stone barns and a scenic landscape of water and woods. It’s this combination that prompted Philadelphia magazine to name the Upper Perkiomen Valley as one of “Philadelphia’s New Hot Neighborhoods.”

“Our Valley” is a publication of the Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce. It began as a summer intern project and has evolved into a comprehensive collection of information and a guided tour of our rural community, complete with a reference to local businesses. If you’ve lived here your whole life, we hope you’ll smile as you page through this fresh approach to living in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce is a member-based, business advocacy organization striving to serve nearly 300 members by providing vision and leadership to foster economic vitality and to enrich the quality of life in the Upper Perkiomen Valley.

The Chamber defines its service area as the Upper Perkiomen School district, which includes four boroughs (East Greenville, Green Lane, Pennsburg and Red Hill) and three townships, Marlborough and Upper Hanover in Montgomery County, and Hereford Township in Berks County.

Strength Through Connections Although there are several large employers in the UPV, it’s interesting to note that two-thirds of the UPV Chamber members are small businesses with less than ten employees. The Chamber brings value to members of all sizes through targeted marketing, exclusive referrals, business development seminars, special events and a wide range of benefits including notary services and certificates of origin.

The Chamber’s Main Street location provides high visibility and easy access for visitors and members who want to tap into local resources, make connections or avail themselves of promotional tools to help their business grow. In addition to traditional functions, the Chamber also partners with local schools and municipalities for broad-based economic development and educational initiatives.

What’s up with perkup?

PerkUp is a comprehensive community and economic development plan designed to broadly address the needs of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. An initiative of the Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce, it began in the stuttering economy of 2008 with business leaders and local legislators asking the question, “How might we shape the future of our community?”

Through a grassroots effort of public outreach and business engagement, a three-pronged plan with multiple objectives emerged. Appropriately tagged “PerkUp,” the plan is bookmarked, highlighted and ever-evolving. PerkUp Project Coordinator, Michele Fillippo, sums it up: PerkUp represents the best of public and private partnerships working together to protect and (economically) leverage natural resources, encourage business development, and provide local education opportunities.

Although PerkUp is now a separate 501(c)3 corporation, it continues to be supported by the UPV Chamber through leadership and goals. Education has always been a priority for the Chamber but PerkUp has accelerated those efforts and taken the commitment to a higher level.

“At the heart of PerkUp is the vision of building a better community through business and education partnerships,” says Fillippo. The “Pathways to Success Program” is a collaborative effort engaging multiple business partners, the Upper Perkiomen School District, Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center and Montgomery County Community College. In addition to establishing the Upper

Perkiomen Valley Workforce Development Partnership, this multi-faceted partnership has focused on job readiness, career awareness, incumbent worker training and lifelong learning.

In summary, PerkUp seeks to market the region’s assets to residents, visitors and potential employers. Through private and public partnerships, it works to develop a favorable climate for low-impact businesses providing family-sustaining jobs. PerkUp is based on the premise that successful planned growth can be achieved with regional planning, active intermunicipal collaboration and public involvement.

Complementing its many other fine assets, the Upper Perkiomen Valley has outstanding educational opportunities. Education in the community and surrounding area is well-developed at every level with preschools, state certified day care centers, a locally run school district, private schools and colleges, and universities.

The Upper Perkiomen School District has an excellent reputation and serves the community with two elementary schools (Hereford and Marlborough), one middle school (Upper Perkiomen Middle School) and one high school (Upper Perkiomen High School). With approximately 3,400 students, the district tends to reflect the community which it operates in – a small town atmosphere and a yearning to improve students’ education to the fullest degree.

High school students interested in a technical career may attend the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center in Limerick. Providing skill development and alternate instruction using state-of-the-art equipment and instructional styles, the Center customizes programs for individuals according to their career interest. upvchamber.org

Newer buildings and businesses complement the landscape while others have reclaimed preserved historic structures. The rich heritage and traditions of the early German immigrants who settled here are woven into the regional culture. Residents are respectful of the privacy of others and pride themselves in their self-reliance and strong work ethic. A sense of stewardship is reected in their strong appreciation for natural resources and preserved land.

Two local resources are available for those interested in researching and learning more about the rich history of this region: Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center and Goschenhoppen Historians, Inc.

Prior to the construction of the dam in Green Lane, the meandering Perkiomen Creek deďŹ ned the heart of the Upper Perkiomen Valley. Today, the Perkiomen Creek and its tributaries form the largest body of water in Montgomery County.

Bird and Wildlife Festival Green Lane Park Over 3,000 visitors attend this early fall event celebrating birds and nature. The festival features live birds of prey and other animals, games, bird calling, music, food and much more.

This iconic event helps to educate and inspire conservation and environmental stewardship across the Upper Perkiomen Valley.

Community Day East Greenvlle to Pennsburg One of the Valley’s most loved and wellattended events, Community Day brings local businesses and residents together. Extending one mile from East Greenville to Pennsburg, Main Street is filled with music, food, crafts and fun as the community celebrates together.

Halloween Parade Main Street The Halloween parade down Main Street garners community excitement as over 10,000 people anxiously anticipate the costumes, marching bands and spooky floats creatively designed by local organizations and businesses. There’s something for everyone in this parade organized by Love Upper Perk.

Hometown Christmas Parade Main Street For over 40 years, the Spaar family of the UPV (now in conjunction with Love Upper Perk), has hosted a holiday parade that begins on Main Street in Red Hill and ends at “Santa Land” at St. Mark’s Church in Pennsburg. Using only nonmotorized modes of transportation and featuring many majestic animals, this parade is the picture of hometown charm and holiday spirit.

Maple Sugar Magic Green Lane Park This free program demonstrates the unique centuries-old tradition of maple sugaring (making maple syrup from the sap of maple trees) in North America. Participants witness the tapping of maple trees, the boiling process in the evaporator, and share stories of “sugaring off ” in the old days. Visitors also can compare real maple syrup with the store-brand variety in a blind taste test.

John DeBella Dog Walk Green Lane Park A fun event for pet owners, this “canine carnival” gets pets and their owners outdoors, and those looking to adopt pups can gather information. Hosted by Philly’s WMGK radio DJ, visitors look forward to demonstrations including dog agility and Police K9 units.

Make Music Upper Perk Multiple Stages Every year on the Summer Solstice ( June 21st), the Valley joins in a worldwide music festival to celebrate National Music Day. With genres for every taste, music resonates from the Valley as local parks, churches and businesses host hundreds of musicians.

Relay for Life Get a taste of the philanthropic culture of the Upper Perkiomen Valley at this uplifting, emotional event. With inspiring stories from cancer survivors, dedications for those who have passed and many residents uniting for a good cause, the Relay for Life offers the opportunity for our Valley to have fun and give to the American Cancer Society.

musical performances Red Hill Band The Red Hill Band has the distinction of being the oldest cultural institution in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The sounds of their concert music, popular marches, and jazz numbers have become a tradition at many local events.

Smoke in the Valley Green Lane Park Chefs from all over the US and Canada travel to Isaac Smith Park to participate in this annual BBQ Cook-off Competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. In addition to the spectacular barbeque, this two-day event features live bands, food and wine vendors, crafters, a wing-eating contest and a car show.

Carnivals are held throughout the summer.

Residents, young and old, look forward to all the traditional festival fare: the food, fun rides and amusing games. Bingo games with large cash prizes and jackpots offer added appeal to the carnivals.

Goshenhoppen Folk Festival Perkiomenville For over 45 years, this festival has celebrated the Pennsylvania Dutch traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. Volunteers dress in traditional garb for this non-commercial event so visitors can take a step back into history as they sample old-fashioned PA Dutch food.

Authentic tools are used to recreate this rich cultural era for our community.

Hometown 4th of July

Love Upper Perk knows how to throw a community celebration, especially on the Fourth of July. Hometown 4th of July is an allday event with activities such as fire company water battles, live musical entertainment, concession stands, and fireworks to conclude the day.

Perk Up Half Marathon Runners enjoy the beautiful scenery and are inspired to conquer the rolling hills of the Upper Perkiomen Valley while participating in the tough Perk Up Half Marathon.

Proceeds from the race go towards the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation.

Recreation is fundamental to a community’s vitality, strengthening its collective wellbeing and adding to the quality of life for residents. Preserved open spaces and nature areas within the Upper Perkiomen Valley offer a wide range of year-round fun and unique ways to truly refresh, recharge, and take in the beauty of the great outdoors.

Green Lane Park is recognized by Audubon Pennsylvania as one of only 81 of the Commonwealth’s Important Bird Areas (IBA) and earns a double mention from Hotspotbirding.com. Visitors can grab the “Green Lane Park Bird Checklist” from either one of the park offices to aid their viewing of both breeding and migratory birds. The park hosts year-round environmental education programs including birding field trips, and the ever popular waterfowl and songbird programs.

Fishing and hunting continue to be popular outdoor sports and rewarding locations abound for both within the Upper Perkiomen Valley. In addition to bass fishing, Deep Creek Lake and Green Lane Reservoir are top local choices for jigging for crappies while the Perkiomen and Unami creeks remain favorites for fly fishing.

The reservoir and adjacent parks open up a whole world of opportunities for outdoor activities. Kayaking, boating, and paddle boarding are options to enjoy the water, and a variety of trails present the possibility for a new hiking, biking, or horseback riding adventure each time out. Winding back roads also provide a scenic route for long distance bike rides around town, and many parks have walking paths to enjoy at any pace.

Beyond the parks and pathways, there are other facilities for having fun. One of the newest additions to the community is the Upper Perkiomen Valley YMCA. With an expansive complex that includes indoor and outdoor pools, the YMCA

is committed to promoting its core values through its many classes and programs available to members of all ages. Another destination for outdoor excitement is Bear Creek Mountain Resort & Conference Center. Nestled on over 330 wooded acres in Berks County, the resort offers a wide-range of winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, and continues the fun throughout the warmer months with activities such as disc golf and trails.

Mountain views provide a scenic background for Bear Creek’s luxurious accommodations including their spa and dining rooms, and also set the stage for various seasonal festivals and special events that are hosted there.

Upper Perkiomen Community Thrift Shop

Funding for many of the non-profits in the community is generated from sales at the Community Thrift Shop. The shop is managed by the Upper Perkiomen Community Council, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to helping build the capacity of local non-profits. Donations of new and gently used goods and clothing are accepted and proceeds from the sale are distributed to area human services organizations.

The Open Link

The Open Link provides services and programs for people of all ages to lead healthy and productive lives. This non-profit organization welcomes food and financial contributions, as well as people who are willing to donate their time and talent. With invaluable support from individual volunteers and community civic and church groups, The Open Link remains committed to building a stronger Upper Perkiomen Valley community by delivering on programs that help all of their neighbors flourish.

Love Upper Perk

By connecting the community through events and an online presence, Love Upper Perk strives to “get the word out about what is great about Upper Perk.” The creation of the UP Community Life Center has provided an event space where ideas come to life and people can engage one another. Other endeavors include “Bike and Sol,” a not for profit bike shop which utilizes staff and volunteers for sales, service and refurbishing, and the “Incredible Edible” movement, which uses innovative gardening and farming techniques to create sustainable food systems and feed the community at little to no cost. Each of the local businesses that make their home in the Upper Perkiomen Valley contributes to the intricate fabric and dynamics that make up our community. While some have a rich history dating back to the Valley’s early days, others are just beginning to form their roots in the area and make their name known. From large-scale manufacturers to small start-ups, there are a host of unique businesses within our town to explore and become acquainted with.

In the days of silent movies, before the introduction of “talkies,” travelers of the early 1900’s often accessed the Upper Perkiomen Valley by railroad, disembarking at East Greenville where some dined in the elegant banquet room of The Globe Inn or took to the basement rathskeller (an old German term for the cellar bar or restaurant) to relax from their journey. Today, The Globe Inn extends its personalized service to overnight guests that includes weekend packages for special occasions, private banquets, and extended stay for business travelers in period-decorated suites. The bed and breakfast is within walking distance of the historic Grand Theater on Main Street and the quaint shops that make the Valley a hometown destination.

The Grand Theater attracts patrons from beyond local boundaries with its vintage atmosphere and family-oriented first run movies. Owner Ed Buchinski is proud of the renovations that restored the theater to its pre-Depression splendor and earned him a Revitalization Award from Montgomery County. Featuring an original 1924 box office, the Grand holds special events and silent movies complete with organ accompaniment. A planned redesign of the adjoining Subway restaurant will replicate the 1920s era.

Once complete, it will be the only one of its kind in the United States and compliment the theater next door.

Past visitors to the Upper Perkiomen Valley may have caught up on local happenings by reading the Town and Country Newspaper while they waited in line to catch a show or the next train. Today, the newspaper is the locals’ choice for local news. Since 1899, the Town and Country is the only community newspaper of record and copies are maintained at the US Library of Congress. Locally owned and operated, the awardwinning newspaper covers 16 municipalities in the Upper Perkiomen Valley and surrounding areas.

Local land and waterways make the Valley especially attractive to hunters and fishermen. For many people, this means a stop for breakfast at Powderbourne Gun Club and Restaurant. In addition to skeet shooting and sporting clays, Powderbourne offers on-site pheasant hunting on its 330-acre preserve.

The Upper Perkiomen Valley is home to many young entrepreneurs, too. For starters, Speakeasy Coffee Company is a small batch specialty roaster providing high-quality coffee - from farm to cup every coffee is unique. As a late-night alternative to fried pub snacks, BlackDog Brinery produces small batch pickled vegetables which they make without preservatives. Sweet treats are available at another new business venture, M&J Gourmet, a specialty candy, chocolate, gourmet food and gift shop right in Pennsburg.

Not many people can say that their hometown smells like fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, but that’s the aroma that wafts through the air when Blommer Chocolate Company, the largest cocoa processor and ingredient chocolate supplier in North America, begins its production days at its East Greenville plant. Founded in 1939, Blommer is a fourth-generation family owned and operated company that maintains an outstanding reputation for customer service and quality.

Open to the public by appointment, the Knoll Museum houses an unparalleled collection of no-longer-produced Knoll icons. Family owned and operated since 1907, Stauffer began as a manufacturer of cotton gloves in Palm. The company moved to Red Hill in 1955 and began transitioning to a fulltime distributor.
