STRENGTH THROUGH CONNECTIONS The Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce (UPV Chamber) serves a quiet, rural oasis spanning seven municipalities in two counties of southeastern Pennsylvania. Its Main Street location provides high visibility and easy access for visitors and members who want to tap into local resources, pick up a map, learn about the area, and peruse the promotional display racks. In addition to our physical location, our website provides a searchable, comprehensive listing of members, events, programs, and other community resources. As a member-based business advocacy organization, the chamber represents the voice of business in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The chamber is a collaboration of businesses, municipalities, and organizations committed to the healthy development and growth of our regional economy. Strength Through Connections, it’s not just a tagline; it’s a culture. The UPV Chamber is a community within itself. A community of businesses and organizations invested in relationships to support each other and those we live with. It’s also a business strategy. Through networking functions, seminars, special events, and marketing packages, the chamber provides opportunities to make connections, meet potential new clients, and grow your business. The chamber connects members, advocates for businesses, and promotes our region. The best way to market your business is by making connections. And, the best place to start making connections is the UPV Chamber. Join us in our mission and become a partner in strengthening our community. Luanne B. Stauffer, UPVCC President

In addition to the educational opportunities, networking events, and marketing possibilities that many membership-based organizations offer, the UPV Chamber takes an active role in regional planning and directly works with private and public partners to advocate for business, foster economic vitality, and enrich the quality of life in the Valley. After joining, Penn Foundation immediately got involved and made new connections, earned new business, and continues to have countless opportunities to share how we can help individuals and businesses thrive. WHAT’S UP WITH

PerkUp? AS AN INITIATIVE of the Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber (UPV Chamber), PerkUp began as an informal private and public partnership of community leaders working together to develop a plan for economic growth and community development in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The PerkUp Plan identified three overarching goals and a broad scope of community and economic development objectives within this region. PerkUp has strategically and successfully addressed the initial goals, expanded the education programs, and broadened the focus of community development.

Since PerkUp was launched in 2008, I’ve been proud to serve on the Steering Committee and support the initiatives of the PerkUp Plan. PerkUp has convened our public and private sectors to establish partnerships for working together to shape the future of our community. Kim Licata, Harleysville Bank

PERKUP HIGHLIGHTS PerkUp’s Business and Education Alliance is a vibrant, collaborative effort engaging the Upper Perkiomen School District, Perkiomen School, Western Montgomery Career & Technology Center and Montgomery County Community College, and multiple business partners. This multi-faceted coalition includes programs targeting job-readiness, career awareness, teachers in the workplace, and life-long learning. The Upper Perkiomen Valley Regional Gateway & Wayfinding Sign was established to link our seven municipalities together as one community. In addition to creating a sense of place, the program highlights recreational locations, natural resources, and cultural venues. Successfully completed, it’s the largest multi-municipal gateway and wayfinding sign program in The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is the recipient of the The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association 2019 Award for Projects, Programs & Practices. The Hometown Hero Banner program is a community-wide tribute honoring individuals with ties to the Upper Perkiomen Valley who are serving, or have served our country in the United States Armed Forces. From Memorial Day to Veteran’s day banners are on display to celebrate and remind our community of their dedication to our country. PerkUp continues to represent the best of public and private partnerships working together to protect and leverage our natural resources, inspire community development, and provide educational opportunities.

MUNICIPAL PARTNERSHIPS

Sharon Shipe Photography

OUR COMMUNITIES The Upper Perkiomen Valley is a charming balance of natural beauty, small-town atmosphere, and established businesses. Quality of life is a way of life in this rural landscape connected by scenic roads, municipal trails, and a county-wide trail system. Breathtaking recreational venues and scenery merge with Main Street commerce, industry, educational opportunities, and affordable homes. Shopping centers, stores, and offices are concentrated within the centrally located boroughs of Green Lane, East Greenville, Pennsburg, and Red Hill, preserving a small-town environment. Major roadways provide convenient access to the New Jersey Shore and the metropolitan areas of Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, and New York. The region is composed of seven municipalities in two counties. Each continues to uniquely contribute to the present and future of the area. Before 1741, Upper Hanover Township was part of Hanover Township which also included several other townships and boroughs. East Greenville, Pennsburg, and Red Hill boroughs were later carved out of land in Upper Hanover. Marlborough Township was also established in 1741 when Salford Township was sub-divided. Years later, Green Lane Borough was incorporated out of Marlborough.

Historical landmarks, including preserved mills and barns and Colonial Era buildings, are reminders of the Valley’s contributions to the growth of the United States. Three significant milestones shaped the development of the area: the construction of the Goshenhoppen and Green Lane Turnpike (Route 29) in 1851 and the building of the railroad in 1875 opened the doors to increased commerce; in 1954, the Philadelphia Suburban Water Company built the Green Lane Reservoir, creating substantial outdoor recreational opportunities. In addition to the reservoir, Montgomery County parkland, municipal protected open space, active and passive parks, and other recreational sites are significant natural resource areas. The Upper Perkiomen Valley Regional Planning Commission has developed a comprehensive plan to employ safeguards against overdevelopment, to encourage business expansion, and to maintain the area as an oasis. In 1954, the Upper Perkiomen School District was formed to serve the six Montgomery County municipalities of the Valley plus Hereford Township in Berks County. The school district formalized the relationships with the seven municipalities, linking them together as one community.

In addition to our own Rotary events, the club also supports other community groups in the Valley. Supporting youth is a central focus of the Rotary Club of Upper Perk. Past President Darlene Scott says, “Rotary International’s Youth Leadership Development Programs are cultivating the next generation of leaders by providing young adults with opportunities to make the world a better place. These programs help young people build confidence and learn skills that will encourage them to be leaders in their communities—all while having fun! Upper Perk Rotary invests in these programs because we understand, if we want peace in the world, we need to invest, mentor, and empower our Valley’s youth to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

The Upper Perkiomen School District promotes a studentcentered learning environment in its two elementary schools, 4th & 5th Grade Center, middle school, and high school. Creative and critical thinking is encouraged at all levels, and the district fosters learning experiences within and outside of the classroom. Students leave UPSD with college and careerready skills that support employment in all fields. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills, including the ability to communicate, collaborate, critically think, and creatively work, are taught at all levels, in all disciplines. Students, K-12, are assisted in mastering Pennsylvania’s Career Education and Work Standards. In K-5 there is FLITE school which introduces students to aspects of technology and engineering.

The recent opening of The 4th & 5th Grade Center allowed UPSD to alleviate space issues for grades K-5 and allowed reconfiguration of elementary buildings in strategic and innovative ways, freeing teachers to instruct in more flexible ways. Middle school students can benefit through community partnerships such as with Bike and Sol, a local business. High School students can attend the Western Montgomery Career and Technology Center and the high school partners with Montgomery County Community College to offer college credit. Parental participation in the educational process is encouraged through linkages such as Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). UPSD is intertwined with the community, including initiatives with the Chamber of Commerce, The Open Link, and YMCA. Buildings and fields are heavily used by local organizations and high school post-secondary events are often the hubs of community involvement and pride.

Perkiomen School 200 Seminary Street, Pennsburg • perkiomen.org

Perkiomen School, located in Pennsburg, offers a quality liberal arts education while developing “entrepreneurial spirit” in its diverse, co-educational middle school and high school students. Perkiomen School’s motto is Solvitur vivendo (“It is solved through living”) and that philosophy is put into practice through engaged and thoughtful experiences, including the opportunity to learn from calculated risktaking and failure, while adapting and bouncing back, emphasizing process over product. Perkiomen offers a balance of engaging academics, inspiring fine and performing arts, and competitive athletics. The school features rigorous course study as well as an outstanding Learning Center to allow a range of students to reach their potentials. Some of the school’s educational opportunities that offer students voice and choice include the following Institutes: Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneur, and Medical. The Artificial Intelligence Institute studies the interactions and applications of emerging technologies. Designed for any student, the course work focuses on “application, literacy, decisionmaking, and ethics, while learning how artificial intelligence will help students define their value in a new economy.” The Entrepreneur Institute encourages students to develop new businesses and provides the opportunity for them to pitch ideas to alumni and members of the business community. The Medical Institute fosters the passion of students interested in medical and STEM professions. Students explore various medical professions, interact with professionals, and experience hands-on learning.

Perkiomen School continues to develop learning opportunities that prepare our students for college, for life, and for discovering happiness and success. That success begins right here in Pennsburg where our students - from all over the United States and the world – meet, connect, and enrich the Upper Perkiomen Valley community. At SLHC we create connections between the past and the future through educational programs and community partnerships. Beth Twiss Houting, Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center

The Red Hill Christian School educates and nurtures children in a Biblicallycentered environment. The school values use of Growth Mindset language, authentic learning that stresses failure as a learning opportunity, not a defeat, and collaborative learning. Additionally, the school utilizes the great outdoors and hands-on learning experiences. Technology has become a great resource and tool that can support learners in discovering new ideas. Students challenge themselves in our learner driven community and get extra support where needed. Students are encouraged to grow in entrepreneurship and local community members have mentored students as they create their own businesses. RHCH hosts a children’s business fair each spring to display student businesses and invite shoppers from all over to buy their goods and services. A second campus called Deep Creek Learning Center: An Acton Academy was opened in 2019: “a learner driven community” for K-8 students.

LOCAL EVENTS In the tradition of small towns, the Upper Perkiomen Valley hosts an abundance of seasonal fairs and picnics sponsored by churches, fire companies, and civic organizations. Dates vary but if you love peaches, strawberries, pancakes, ice cream, funnel cakes, and music, you’ll be happy here.

Photo by: Town and Country News

For added entertainment, the Valley boasts the presence of a full-service historic theater. The Grand Theater, built in 1924 and fully restored in 2005, features current films, community events, classic films, and a rare Marr & Colton theater pipe organ. A reliable resource for ongoing events is another of our rare community treasures, an independently-owned, weekly newspaper: Town & Country. Visitors and residents can enjoy annual events celebrated throughout the year. Photo by: Town and Country News

Hometown Christmas Parade

John DeBella Dog Walk

Main Street

Green Lane Park

For over 40 years, the Spaar family of the UPV, in conjunction with Love Upper Perk, has hosted a holiday parade that begins on Main Street in Red Hill and ends at “Santa Land” at St. Mark’s Church in East Greenville. Using only non-motorized modes of transportation and featuring many majestic animals, this parade is the picture of hometown charm and holiday spirit.

A fun event for pet owners, this “canine carnival” gets pets and their owners outdoors, and those looking to adopt pups can gather information. Hosted by Philly’s WMGK radio DJ, visitors look forward to demonstrations including dog agility and Police K9 units.

Make Music Upper Perk Multiple Stages

Maple Sugar Magic Green Lane Park This free program demonstrates the unique centuries-old tradition of maple sugaring (making maple syrup from the sap of maple trees) in North America. Participants witness the tapping of maple trees, the boiling process in the evaporator, and learn about the “sugaring off” party. Visitors also can compare real maple syrup with the storebrand variety in a blind taste test.

Every year on the Summer Solstice (June 21st), the Valley joins in a worldwide music festival to celebrate National Music Day. With genres for every taste, music resonates from the Valley as local parks, churches, and businesses host hundreds of musicians.

Memorial Day Parade A long-standing Valley tradition, the Memorial Day parade provides an opportunity for the community to honor those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The parade procession follows a different route each year, concluding at an area church cemetery with a ceremony featuring guest speakers, band performances, and a volley and taps over the grave of a local fallen soldier.

Photo by: Town and Country News

Since 1900, the Red Hill Band has performed in parks and outdoor venues, playing marches, show tunes, and other traditional concert band music throughout the summer. Valley Choral Society presents major concerts in the spring and fall, and smaller performances at community gatherings.

SUMMER EVENTS Carnivals are held throughout the summer. Residents, young and old, look forward to all the traditional festival fare: the food, fun rides, and amusing games. Bingo games with large cash prizes and jackpots offer added appeal to the carnivals.

Goshenhoppen Folk Festival For over 45 years, this festival has celebrated the Pennsylvania Dutch traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. Volunteers dress in traditional garb for this non-commercial event so visitors can take a step back into history as they sample old fashioned PA Dutch food. Authentic tools are used to recreate this rich cultural era for our community.

Hometown 4th of July Love Upper Perk knows how to throw a community celebration, especially on the Fourth of July. Hometown 4th of July is an all-day event with activities such as Fire Company Water Battles, live musical entertainment, concession stands, and fireworks to conclude the day.

FALL EVENTS Community Day East Greenville to Pennsburg One of the Valley’s most loved and wellattended events, Community Day, brings local businesses and residents together. Extending one mile from East Greenville to Pennsburg, Main Street is filled with music, food, crafts, and fun as the community celebrates together.

Bird & Wildlife Festival Green Lane Park Over 2,000 visitors attend this early fall event to learn about the 280 bird species that have been spotted at the Green Lane Park. Festival visitors can interact with animals and enjoy food, music, and family activities. This iconic event helps to inspire conservation efforts across the Upper Perkiomen Valley.

Halloween Parade Main Street from Red Hill to East Greenville The Halloween parade down Main Street garners community excitement as over 10,000 people anxiously anticipate the costumes, marching bands, and spooky floats creatively designed by local organizations and businesses. FOOD & FUN

FOOD & FUN I think I can speak for most independent restaurant owners when I say that we share a common understanding that our businesses celebrate the rich diversity of flavors, ingredients, and recipes from our community heritage. We have a relentless passion to provide an atmosphere where friends and family continue to gather. We believe in putting quality things like food, beverage, and service on the table while family and friends gather to put thoughts and ideas on the table. Dining is a moment in time where all things are enjoyed together for a pleasurable experience. Susan Dale, Spinnerstown Hotel, Inc.

EXPLORING RECREATION When defining the appeal of livable communities, parks and recreation services are essential quality of life amenities that complement healthy living goals. Parks support active lifestyles and provide gathering places for families and social groups, as well as for individuals of all ages and economic status. From hiking to biking, fishing to birding, campgrounds to playgrounds, endless adventures await you in this beautiful region of southeastern Pennsylvania consisting of rolling hills, wandering streams, and abundant wildlife. Cast your line for trout in our clear streams while listening to the gobbles of a wild turkey echoing through the woods. Pavilions and picnic areas provide opportunities for family reunions, birthday parties, and friendly gatherings. Preserved open spaces, golf courses, active sports fields, and a full-service, stateof-the art YMCA, with four pools, offer a wide range of year-round fun and unique ways to stay active and healthy. Hiking is the most popular outdoor activity in Pennsylvania and the Upper Perkiomen Valley has an abundance of options, from short-loop hikes to winding trails with scenic vistas. Numerous multi-use trails expand opportunities to include mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. Nestled along the southwestern boundary is the “Crown Jewel of Montgomery County Parks and Heritage Sites: Green Lane Park. With three thousand acres of the UPV, the park offers a plethora of activities include birding, running, biking, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, orienteering, wildlife watching, tennis, volleyball, horseshoes, boating, paddle-boarding, fishing and coming soon, an 18-hole disc golf course. The Green Lane Park offers a wide array of family-oriented, active and passive recreational opportunities, free educational programs and events, seasonal concerts, multiple pavilions, an amphitheater, two campgrounds, two playgrounds, two lakes, a reservoir, and over 20 miles of multi-use trails, including the northern section of the popular Perkiomen Trail which directly links with the Schuylkill River Trail. In addition to the many other benefits, our recreation and park facilities help promote social bonds by uniting families and friends, encouraging stewardship, and creating memories in this close-knit community.

LOCAL BIRD WATCHING Green Lane Park has a long and storied history as a destination for bird-watching, dating back to the 1950s. The 3400-acre site features a wide array of habitats, including deciduous forest, old fields, large evergreen stands, an 800-acre lake and two smaller lakes of 28 and 36 acres, respectively. This habitat diversity makes the park attractive to a diverse bird population. Some 292 bird species have been documented in the park and surrounding Upper Perkiomen Valley. Green Lane Park was recognized as a Pennsylvania Important Bird Area by Pennsylvania Audubon in 1996. It is one of only 82 sites recognized as IBA’s in the commonwealth. Green Lane shares this IBA designation with nearby Unami Creek Valley, also located in the beautiful Upper Perkiomen Valley, a treasured destination for birds and birders alike! Kevin Crilley, Environmental Educator, Region II, Montgomery County Department of Assets and Infrastructure, Division of Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites.

“Where so close to home, feels so far away,” Bear Creek Mountain Resort & Conference Center offers a host of year-round activities, spa getaways, hotel stays, dining, and special events. For those who enjoy full-service and a la carte recreation options, Bear Creek, a four-season destination resort, is a short drive up the mountain.

HEALTH

&

WELLNESS

Community healthcare is quality care. The dedication, training, and resourcefulness of healthcare providers has been put to the test during the COVID-19 crisis, and they truly are heroes. Jean Keeler, Grand View Health

HEALTH & WELLNESS Our health is shaped by the places where we live, learn, work, and play. Fresh air, open space, and an abundance of natural resources frame the landscape for healthy lifestyles in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The UPV YMCA and our health care systems, private practices, physical therapy, and rehab facilities help us take a holistic approach to healthy living by promoting and offering a variety of wellness, mental health, nutrition, and exercise programs. Farm stands and grocery stores also provide convenient access to fresh foods and local produce. Residents here find comfort in the world-class health care that is an added benefit of living in this quiet corner of Montgomery County. With the presence of St. Luke’s University Health Network, Lehigh Valley Health Network and Grand View Health, residents can conveniently access routine and specialty medical care. Through Penn Foundation’s mental health and substance abuse treatment programs, individuals and families can also get support for those times in our life that can sometimes give us more than we can handle on our own. Health is more than healthcare, and in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, residents have access to every aspect of healthy living.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY (Emergency Services)

Sharon Shipe Photography

Dedication & Service – Fire Companies in the UPV The Upper Perkiomen Valley is faithfully served by six volunteer fire companies. Each company maintains active firefighter and fire police membership and some have auxiliaries to assist in fundraising and events. Not only do volunteer firefighters leave their homes and places of work to respond to fire, rescue, and storm-related emergencies, they also staff community events year-round. On many occasions, firehouses have been opened for people evacuated from their homes during an emergency. Hundreds of volunteers have stepped up to serve the Valley and risked their lives. Two died in the line of service. Dedicated to serving their communities, the volunteers work collegially in an organized manner, including periodic fire and rescue training together, providing mutual-aid to surrounding fire companies, and acquiring apparatus in response to the overall needs of the municipalities. For support, the companies all rely on donations from governments, businesses, and residents. Half of them maintain social clubs to help defray the costs of their services. Volunteers also depend on a variety of fundraisers (car shows, boot drives, barbeques, raffles, dances, carnivals, bingo, etc.). The companies welcome social members and members of the community who are interested in helping with much-needed fundraising events and reducing the strain on firefighting volunteers.

42 | UPVCC

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

East Greenville Fire Company

During October’s Fire Prevention Week, the fire companies participate in educational programs at local schools, in their firehouses, and at other locations. Open House events at the firehouses present opportunities for local residents to visit and interact with the volunteer firefighters and fire police members. The time needed for training and the hours required to continuously maintain quality firefighting services requires an extraordinary commitment to our community. The Upper Perkiomen Valley is fortunate to have dedicated volunteers willing to invest themselves in the fire and rescue service. The fire companies all participate in a collective known as the Upper Perkiomen Emergency Service Association (UPESA) meeting on a regular basis to critique recent emergency calls and discuss training opportunities and strategic purchasing options.

FAITH

LOCAL FAITH The Valley is a place that cherishes family, our history and community. It is a place where faith has played a major role in helping to establish the fabric of our Valley. Over the years it has been evident that the different churches of our community have worked together to create a unity that has been an example of what being a neighbor really looks like. Being a neighbor means looking out for “the least of these”, locking arms when injustice arises, and generously pouring out our resources to help others in times of crisis. The differing faiths in the Valley have all emphasized and lead the way in all these areas and more. Our prayer as a community should continue to be one of peace and love. The Upper Perk Valley has a rich history and we hope that as you see all of the different churches, organizations, businesses, and people that live here it will be evident over and over again that this Valley is not only a place to just drive through. It is one where family roots can be grown deeply watered by the foundation of faith that was established so many years ago. Pastor John Buckley, Upper Perkiomen Community Church
