WELCOME! Welcome to the third “lite” edition of UPBEAT. Due to the pandemic, we decided to create an online, visitor’s guide to help local community members explore everything that Uptown has to offer. As you flip through the virtual pages of this comprehensive, Uptown handbook, we hope you will be inspired and motivated to visit in person or shop online at one of our amazing main street businesses. Over the last six months, our Uptown stores and eateries have quickly adapted and changed their way of doing business to keep their staff and customers safe. Choosing local is now more important than ever. It is essential that our main streets are here to serve us tomorrow and into the future. By continuing to support local businesses, you are in turn supporting your local economy as significantly more money stays in a community when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned, businesses. So, we thank those of you who have made it a priority to order takeout from their favourite Uptown restaurants and pubs on a regular basis, purchase gift cards and Uptown dollars, write positive reviews about Uptown establishments and buy online and/or make appointments at your preferred retailers. Your thoughtful actions are greatly appreciated. As we make it through the next few months, we encourage you to continue choosing local. Our businesses are weathering through yet another storm (following several years of construction) and desperately need your support. We are all in this together. In gratitude,

Tracy Van Kalsbeek Executive Director, Uptown Waterloo BIA Editor, UPBEAT Magazine 3

HUGHES LANE ART WALK

The Hughes Lane Art Walk was born out of a desire to bring more vibrancy and 2020, the Uptown Waterloo BIA and the City of Waterloo collaborated to create Shareable Moments grant. Eight artists were commissioned to paint the back d Street, to which Hughes Lane runs parallel (between William and Erb Streets). S the quality, aesthetic appeal and connection to participating businesses; here's

NIKOLINA KUPCEVIC • ZERO WASTE BULK Nikolina's mural piece is called "Enlighten." Here's what it means in her words: "It depicts a woman lighting her own light, glowing with this realization of power and allowing that light to burn the barriers that were preventing her from achieving inner peace and enlightenment. One's satisfaction with life truly does come from within and it is not dependent on outside factors. Realizing this fact has changed my life and I hope that my mural can provoke similar thoughts in its viewers. As Uptown Waterloo continues to develop and flourish, I notice that this is due to the ambitious and inspired people adding new life to our city. We are truly lighting our own candle." 10

LUCY BILSON

21 FIR • ART BY LUKE

SWINSON

MARBLES RESTAURANT

d public art to Uptown. In August e the Art Walk, funded by RTO4's doors of businesses along King Submissions were juried based on s how they turned out.

Lucy Bilson is a designer, researcher, and educator working at the periphery of contemporary graphic design practice. In addition to owning and operating Lucy Bilson Design, Lucy’s creative practice explores the interdisciplinary space between design and art, often using her work to contest the boundaries of contemporary practice. This particular work combines experimental typography and layered sketches of local buildings to speak to the fluidity of the city’s identity and the multiplicity of ways to experience physical space. The fragmented text speaks to the piecing together of public spaces as they are experienced and the sketches of local buildings reference the concept of collecting personal landmarks as one navigates space. Acknowledging that the city’s identity is in flux creates space for different voices and room for growth — particularly as Waterloo continues to expand and diversify.

LUKE SWINSON • 21 FIR (Featured above) Luke Swinson is an Anishinaabe illustrator living in Kitchener, Ontario. As told to The Community Edition, Luke says he was inspired by Indigenous artists growing up, specifically Woodland art. “Adapting my art to mimic that style has allowed me to feel much closer to my heritage. I’m learning more and more about it every day and I want to share that with everyone. This is the way that I know how,” he said. About this piece, Luke says ""Waawaashkeshi - Deer" and "Gekek - Hawk" are animals that are plentiful in our region. The busyness of everyday city life can often lead us to forget the natural beauty around us. These depictions were made as a reminder that these amazing creatures will always share space with us." 11

JACKIE LEVITT • HUSTL+FLOW "Meditations on Breath" We are all connected by invisible threads. Breath is urban air quality. and how we greet strangers. It is interdependence. Cut down a tree in a neighbourhood, and we all feel the difference in our lungs. Breath branches out of our bodies in ways that can be seen. Bronchioles in the lungs, tree root systems. Coral structures, the breath of the ocean.

TARA COOPER • BUD & SALLY CANNABIS CO. There’s a photograph of Matisse in his 70’s sitting in his wheelchair, barefoot with a pair of scissors in his hand. His gaze surveys the hundreds of coloured scraps strewn across the floor of his studio. This time, a kind of pseudo quarantine, is often referred to as Matisse’s second life. It follows his bout with cancer and his confinement to a wheel chair, neither of which seemed to hold his art practice back. Taking cues from Matisse and this time period, in particular the pochoir prints published in Jazz, my mural for Hughes Lane depicts a patterned garden based on plants that have healing properties: cowslip, lion’s tooth (aka dandelion) and safflower. Similar to Matisse, I employed the strategies of cut-outs and stencils with lots of colour and graphic punch. Ultimately, I would like to convey a sense of taking care within this graphic garden, of ourselves, each other and the natural environment.

ANDI+CO. • KING STREET TRIO From the artist: "The piece is entitled Spontaneous Speech, an illustrated poem that speaks to the importance of expressing and following what’s truly in our heart. Too often, the fears that our dreams and desires are too big, or that they simply don’t matter, creep up in our mind and keep us smaller than we know ourselves to be. May these words serve as a community reminder and inspiration to live boldly and from the heart." 12

KAT HERNDEN • MCCABE'S Patterns are everywhere; in nature, in architecture, on bathroom floors. They make sense to me. They imbue this seemingly chaotic and mad world with structure and order and I adore them. Walking around this diverse city, I am overwhelmed by the incredible geometry and simple or complex patterns that present themselves at every turn. All you have to do is pay attention and they are literally everywhere. For this mural, my proposal was to go into the building/business whose door I would be painting, and to take inspiration from a pattern inside to use as a base for my painting. I didn’t even make it inside of McCabe’s, thanks to COVID-19, but I didn't need to look any further than the patio chair I sat in while I ordered my beer. That’s right: my mural was inspired by the plastic patio chairs at McCabe’s. Take a look at them - you’ll see what I mean! Inspiration lurks everywhere when you are open to receiving it. It delights me to no end to take a seemingly mundane or overlooked object and elevate it through art.

JASON PANDA • PATENT SOCIAL My contribution to Hughes Lane pays homage to Waterloo Park and, the design, features a tessellation with dynamic shapes, gestural lines and colours that project community, environment and creativity. Tessellations, made popular by the world renowned Graphic Artist M.C. Escher, illustrate incredible worlds and visualize complex mathematical principles. As an art form viewers are constantly finding new points of interest to catch their attention as positive and negative spaces intertwine and slide together, creating intricate shapes and stories. The tessellation’s form in itself represents our community’s juxtaposition of technology, arts, culture and family as it gives importance to every aspect and piece of the puzzle.

GREEN SPACES

IN UPTOWN WATERLOO

Since the early days of COVID-19, we seemed to agree that being outside was an important part of our changing routines. Not only is it healing, calming and rejuvenating to be in touch with nature, but we had to figure out where to go while keeping our distance and staying safe. If you've been looking for new green spaces to explore, here are our top five favourites around Uptown Waterloo that you can enjoy even into the snowy season.

K-W OKTOBERFEST CARILLON This past March, the carillon at William and King was refurbished. Its bells ring every hour, on the hour, and there are seating areas for you to grab a quick rest. If you're a dog lover, you may be pleasantly surprised to find a few dog petting opportunities around here, too!

WATERLOO PARK • Enter by Grist Mill (reopening 2022) for a scenic stroll along Silver Lake day or night in any season. Silver Lake sits right next to Waterloo Park, a beautiful green space with walking and biking trails and sports areas. SEAGRAM LOFTS • This historical building isn't

just sweet on the eyes and great for social snaps, it's also got a green patch that makes for a perfect midday break. Take a seat or wander around the building when you're visiting Willis Way and other Uptown shops.

RAILWAY TRACKS • Located at the intersection

of Spurline and Laurel Trails, beside the railroad tracks where the former train station is (now Paul Puncher), there's a green space that also sits outside of City Hall. It's a great place to watch the ducks, listen to the water flow and even enjoy a little bit of outdoor yoga.

SUN LIFE FINANCIAL • The gardens around the building at King and Union are immaculately kept. Lots of space to garden gaze and get some fresh air, it's the perfect place to start or end a sunny day in Uptown. 18

INSTAGRAMMABLE PLACES UPTOWN

Instagrammable spaces are abundant in Uptown, but this season, to stay COVID-friendly, we're focusing on outdoor spaces that give you some great scenery to enjoy as you're out supporting local businesses. If you're looking to add some life to your IG feeds, here are five landmarks that you'll want to explore.

THE ORANGE WALL Located beside the railroad tracks between King St. Trio and Harmony is a wall of many possibilities. Use it to superimpose other cool details or keep with a colour theme on your IG feed. This wall makes a great backdrop and sets the scene for creativity. Photo by Cassidy Albrecht

HUGHES LANE Eight artists contributed their works of art to eight doors on Hughes Lane that are very IG worthy. In our feature piece on page 10, you’ll find a little bit more information on each door. They all make great backdrops for social snaps and are the perfect way to incorporate local art onto your feeds.

THE UPTOWN PARKADE The City of Waterloo also has some new murals up along the parkade wall on Willis Way near Regina. As part of an ever-growing beautification initiative in the city, these works of art are definitely something you'll want to enjoy and are also very IG-friendly.

WELCOME TO WATERLOO SIGN A replica of the old vintage sign was unveiled at King and Union in 2018 and is begging to be featured in your IG posts. Whether you're a local Waterloo habitant or visitor, this is a cool piece of Waterloo heritage. Photo from CBC Kitchener 34

ART AROUND UPTOWN Check out the City of Waterloo's website for a list of 22 public art pieces, seven of which are in the Uptown core, that would make a great backdrop or subject in an IG post. Find the Laurel Creek installation outside of City Hall, the Waterloo Bell in Waterloo Town Square, Fourteen Neighbours beside the Button Factory, and more, all within walking distance.
