WHAT IS BURGHLEY STYLE?

W

ith the first Burghley Horse trial held in 1961, with 19 competitors and in front of a mere 12,000 people, the event we know today has grown substantially. From the first horse inspection on Wednesday to the final jumping phase on Sunday, Burghley is not only about fierce equine competition but also about the social and retail scene too. With over 160,000 visitors, the event is a hub of style inspiration and a great opportunity to shop. But do visitors to Burghley have a style, and if so what is it? Always held in early September, the weather at Burghley can be positively balmy, on occasion wet or often offering an atmospheric misty start, with some classic English views across the deer park. Add to this a brisk course walk, over parkland, largely designed Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th Century, and the need for clothes and footwear that can adapt and perform is essential. This may be why Burghley is known very much for its ‘country sports’ style, which is functional, traditional and classic. Burghley is the place to shop for tweed lovers, with customers flocking to stock up on winter clothing, with the forward thinking buying their Christmas gifts well in advance. Tweed is always a big player at both Badminton and Burghley, although this year’s May sunshine meant MMBHT visitors were rocking out sunglasses and shirts, without a thought of gilets, never mind jackets. Burghley, being later in the year, and a month away from the pheasant shooting season, by nature seems to lend itself to more of a quality, ‘Purdey’ inspired look, for both young and old. Over the years, classic hacking and shooting jackets for women have been re-styled by the likes of Liberty Kelly, Holland Cooper and Timothy Foxx. Offering, in their own ways, a unique twist, be it punk inspired patriotic linings, luxury cloths with fur, lace and leather detailing or contrast collars, cuffs in bold colours. The Holland Cooper cape, skinny jeans and fedora is a uniform for young socialites, however, we are enjoying a few other options to this staple look, including the biker jackets and aviator gilets at HC and the new sleeveless tattersall check shirt with a lace panelled back shirts from Timothy Foxx.

The classic Dubarry boot is a Burghley staple and their store is always nothing less than buzzing at Burghley. ‘Dubes’ are always seen as a ‘safe’ style option but also function as a wellington if things get wet. Hot on their heels are Fairfax and Favour offering their long and short women’s boots and men’s driving shoes for those looking for functional, classic look, with a fashion edge for those donning their brighter colours. It’s definitely not a case of what riders will be wearing Fairfax boots at the horse inspections… but who won’t be! Pay a visit to their ‘Lifestyle Pavilion’ based stand to see what’s new at this blossoming brand. No look would be complete without a hat, sunglasses and a bag – large enough to carry essentials (phone, purse, lipstick, programme, bottle of fizz of course!). For those who love the allure of hiding behind a pair of shades, then check out the chic Italian designed Cavalleria Toscana Vision sunglasses. More exciting than classic Ray-Ban and suiting both men and women, these are a brand to look out for no nonsense, quality Italian chic. Find them at Uptown E Store based in the Horse Village, next to the celeb talk area. Be they real or faux fur, headbands and pompom beanies are so common now, it’s time to move on. Classic fedoras are still prevalent but in the right colour, with a feather or vintage brooch embellishment they can look elegant, and unique. Check out Hicks and Brown in the Lifestyle Pavilion for some affordable options in great colours for AW16. But if tweed just isn’t your style and you feel like something a little more fashion forwards then look towards some of the labels at Uptown E Store (located in The Horse Village). Stocking brands such as the exclusive Noel Asmar Equestrian collection, direct from Canada, the store offers a luxury mix of performance styles, with equestrian influenced tailoring. Supplying individual and inspired clothing, for riders, spectators and lovers of the great outdoors, the future is looking Uptown.

THE FIRST HORSE INSPECTION...

Some call it The Trot Up, others the fashion parade, but whatever you call the First Horse Inspection at Burghley, it’s always a close-up spectacle of some of the finest horses on the eventing circuit.

Held in the main arena at Burghley, at 4pm Wednesday 31 August, all eyes will not only be on the horses, and the tension of any in the holding box, but also on the riders, and what they are wearing. Over the past few years, riders have been upping their game when it comes to the all-important trot up outfit. With brands becoming more savvy to this massive promotional opportunity, many are rushing to dress the ‘IT’ riders of the season, showcasing their new collections, which are shared globally via social media within minutes of horses setting foot in the arena. Emerging labels use the event as a great way to break through and gain publicity, established brands dress the premium riders who have the largest social media followings and hand in hand this public display supports both the eventing and fashion industries. Uptown E Store will be dressing regular to the event, Sarah Bullimore. Sarah will be wearing a Noel Asmar Equestrian City Jacket in Punch (a really bold, and vibrant red). Perfect for the trot up as it features fitted tailoring, but a lightweight tech fabric which allows the wearer to move freely. Something a little different to the usual tweed centric looks on offer. ook out for sarah schooling and hacking as she will be wearing one of our bestselling jackets – the Noel asmar Equestrian Rider Jacket, as will young rider Imogen Gloag, a Burghley debutante. Shop for Noel Asmar Equestrian http://www.uptownestore.com/store/c113/Noelasmar Sarah Bullimore (42), a member of the BE World Class Squad who competed as an individual at the European Championships at Blair Castle. She runs a purpose built equestrian facility in Keysoe, North Bedfordshire with her husband Brett. Sarah rode her first four-star at Burghley in 1996 with Bally Cotton who she then rode on his record breaking 7th completion of Badminton in 1997 (the horse had previously completed six times with Andrew Harris) and her Badminton debut. Sarah will be competing on Reve Du Rouet, a 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding, owned by Sarah’s long-standing owners Chris and Sue Gillespie and Brett Bullimor,. He is by the well-known jumping sire Balou du Rouet (a son of the great Baloubet du Rouet) out of Onassis Queen by Oscar De Revel who is by Jalisco B – another great jumping sire. He was bought from Holland as a three-year-old. We wish both Sarah and her horse the best of luck at Burghley, and look forward to seeing them at the horse inspection for the all-important photo opportunities!

THE CROSS COUNTRY COURSE

So where are the best spectator views at Burghley this year?

B

urghley is always a great spectator event but be prepared for a good walk over rolling parkland if you wish to view the whole course (provisionally measured at 6400m for 2016). Following the same route as the 2015 course one could think the course would appear easier, however, the Designer, Captain Mark Philips has made interesting alterations;

“ ‘Change is important, and we don’t want riders to be complacent’. With this course there is no chance of that!” The start and finish are by Ring 2, near the Celebrity Talk area and The Big Screen (near to the Uptown stand in the Horse Village) so after you have shopped with us its worth a wander down to see what really goes on at the start and finish of a major 4*. Fascinating to watch if it’s something you have yet to experience, you can also view fence 1 – A legacy from 2012 – the Olympic Horseshoe and fence 2 the iconic Lambert’s Sofa. For those wanting a majestic view of classic Burghley parkland head down to the Lion Bridge at (Fences 4a and b). A steep decent behind the 4a element, with the water seen at the last minute will keep riders and horses on their toes. Quick responses are required to turn in the shallower water – anyone remember the ‘swimming’ moments last year? Lots to view for horses and spectators alike. You may also catch a glimpse of the of the Anniversary Splash (5abc) A deceptive combination due to the characteristic undulations of the parkland. Be warned Lion Bridge will be rammed on cross country day so do check out the Land Rover Experience just below the bridge for some family entertainment while you wait to cross. If you follow the lake you will arrive at the Land Rover Trout Hatchery (Fences 20 and 21), the biggest and most difficult combination on the course, with a direct route featuring a 6ft drop, hanging log into water, 4 strides to get organised to a huge brush corner, then a turn to a triple brush, on a curved line in water. A truly 4* test. Sit at the top of the hill, arriving early to bag a picnic space and enjoy the action and the ohhhh’s and ahhhh’s! Fences 8 and 9 – Capability’s Cutting offers some classic Burghley fences, with separately numbered elements for those wanting to take a safe line. Kicking on, at 3 minutes into the course is the Rolex Grand Slam Vault (fence 10), a massive fence at 1m60, with a 3m base spread. Worth a look to get a real feel of the scope that these 4* horses need – not quite the same as watching it on TV and thinking I could do that! If you fancy going the extra mile do walk the Winners Avenue (Fence 11) to explore the names of some of the great past winners of Burghley, the log pile fence after this gallop is maximum height and spread. A let up fence as such but still not for the feint hearted.

The classic fences keep on coming with 12 and 13 The Cottesmore Leap. See it in the flesh to believe it and make sure you get some photos as this one is a flier, followed by fence 13, and equally big ask on a tiring horse. But there is no let up, The Land Rover Dairy Farm (14) offers more technical questions and is a great spot to watch the world’s best combinations deal with large fences, on undulating ground with accuracy being everything. Fence 15abc The Rolex Combination will be an interesting watch this year, the undefined ditch requires the ‘right’ kind of jumping and followed by and acute angled open corner – this could sort out the hunters from the dressage divas! For a quintessentially village feel visit fences 16, 17 & 18ab – The Maltings. Dressed with a Maypole and a village pub, riders have classic ‘big white oxers’, a large white gate to triple brush to deal with, while negotiating the cricket pitch. Literally question after question. The Captain’s Log at 19 is a ‘breather’ fence, compared to the rest of the course... its still massive!

‘The footing at Burghley is like a race track, but the terrain allows me to optically build larger fences’ - Captain Mark Phillips Next up is the Trout Hatchery – a test of fitness, accuracy and intelligent riding, as we have already mentioned. On a hot day, with a tired horse we think many riders will be opting for a slower route here. Yet another classic Burghley combination fence is the Discovery Valley (24 abc). This year sees a slight angle change to the c element. Those who get a glance out here will be kicking themselves later! New to the course is fence 25 – the Cross Rails. Modelled on a Swedish oxer style fence, it looks horrific but shouldn’t cause a problem to most 4* horses. At the 9-minute mark is the FEI Classics Leaf Pit (26), another photo opportunity fence. One of the biggest drops on the circuit, roller-coastering down to a skinny triple bar. A definitive ‘flying’, sit back and sort your knitting moment! Follow this by the legacy Sun and Moon fences at the other side of the Discovery Valley (26ab), and into the main arena – a great spot to take a break from shopping and watch some of the world’s best jump fences 28 & 29 – the Return from Rio, 2 strides combination. The penultimate fence this year is the Picnic Table (30) and by popular demand, the final fence (31) the Land Rover Table. With a provisional time of 11m15s this course will take some jumping to go clear, but with lots of longer lines for those new to Burghley, or with tired horses there are fair options. Mark Philips has yet again designed a course which not only tests stamina and fitness, but has utilised those classic Burghley undulations to make some pretty huge fences to tackle, on lines that could force a run out if riders aren’t on point. A truly British 4* event and one of the best tracks in the world.

REVERSING A TRAILER? NO STRESS...

O

When tech meets practicality and the two result in genius. Land Rover’s new ‘Advanced Tow Assist’ is semi – autonomous tech that every trailer towing equestrian needs. With an interest in all things new and equine, the Uptown Team set out to find out how this innovation can support the age old problem of reverse parking a trailer.

ne of the biggest challenges trailer drivers face is reversing into tight space. Now Land Rover has developed a new technology which aims to take the stress out of reversing completely.  Advanced Tow Assist automatically calculates the required steering dimensions, allowing the driver to guide a trailer, horsebox or caravan into position without even using the steering wheel. Land Rover’s Towing Attribute Leader, Daniel Rogers, explains how it works.

C A N   Y O U   G I V E   A   B R I E F   O V E R V I E W   O F    W H AT   A D VA N C E D   T O W   A S S I S T   I S ?  One of the most challenging aspects of trailer towing is reverse parking. Advanced Tow Assist is a new semi-autonomous technology developed by Land Rover which allows the driver to carry out difficult reversing manoeuvers in absolute confidence. The driver simply uses the Terrain Response™ rotary gear controller at the same time as operating the pedals to guide the vehicle and trailer into position. The vehicle will calculate the dimensions and do the rest for you. H O W   E A S Y   I S   I T   T O   G E T   T O   G R I P S   W I T H   T H I S   N E W   T E C H N O L O G Y ?

The semi-autonomous technology is really easy to understand and actually makes reversing simpler for everyone. The complicated aspect of turning the steering wheel accordingly is dispelled as the vehicle automatically calculates which way it needs to steer itself. It will even provide alerts when it detects a potential jack-knife.

IS THIS THE FIRST TIME THIS SORT TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN INVENTED?

Whilst similar reversing technologies are on the market, Land Rover’s Advance Tow Assist is the only one that utilises the full surround camera system to give improved visibility of the trailer when manoeuvring. HOW DOES ADVANCED TOW ASSIST HANDLE OFF-ROAD DRIVING?

Advanced Tow Assist will work perfectly off-road.

DOES ADVANCED TOW ASSIST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN IT IS TOWING HORSES, AS OPPOSED TO A CAR TRAILER?

The driver can define the type of trailer, whether it is a horse trailer, a caravan or a boat trailer, as well as its exact dimensions, weight and number of axles. Based on the information it is given, the vehicle will adjust to suit the individual trailer. APART FROM PARKING, DOES ADVANCED TOW ASSIST HELP WITH ANY OF THE OTHER CHALLENGES OF TOWING HORSES, SUCH AS ‘SNAKING’ OR MAINTAINING BALANCE AROUND CORNERS?

Advanced Tow Assist has been engineered specifically to simplify reversing manoeuvres, but Land Rover’s Trailer Stability Assist is a safety feature that will prevent severe snaking. If trailer sway is detected, it will gradually reduce the speed of the vehicle in order to restore control to the driver. ON WHAT MODELS IS THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE ON?

The Advance Tow Assist technology is available now on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models

THE LITTLE PICNIC COMPANY

A day out at Burghley wouldn’t be the same without the obligatory picnic.

O

nce again title sponsors Land Rover will be hosting the Tailgate Picnic Competition - which traditionally takes place on cross country day, a popular feature among horse trial goers. In recent years it has been judged by some well-known faces, including event rider Zara Tindall, Channel 4’s Kirstie Allsopp and TV presenter Matt Baker, this year Countryfile famed farmer Adam Henson takes the judging helm. Part of a seasoned tradition for many, but for those seeking top quality picnics, without hours of preparation there is an option. Uptown met with Carter Williamson from The Little Picnic Company to find out more.

W H AT I S T H E L I T T L E P I C N I C C O M PA N Y ?

The Little Picnic Company was founded as a stand-alone business 4 years ago from Managing Director, Carter Williamson’s, catering and events company Hamilton’s events. This move was prompted by the large capacity of orders they were experiencing for their ranges of picnics. They have been producing picnics for nine years now. Since its inception, The Little Picnic Company has partnered with the Battle Proms and has been involved with many private and exclusive catering events which hampers were provided for. Alongside their events work, the company has close relationships with many private schools such as Charterhouse and Wellington College. They also provide hampers to most of the usual picnic day races at Ascot, Sandown, Windsor and Newbury and cricket events held at Lords and the Oval, another provision is bespoke picnics for weddings and parties, or special days out such as Burghley Horse Trials.

WITH A CORE BUSINESS IN PROVIDING PICNICS FOR EVENTS SUCH AS THE BAT TLE PROMS AND DAYS OUT, HAVE YOU SEEN A RISE IN THE POPULARIT Y OF PICNICKING, OVER PEOPLE DINING IN HOSPITALIT Y OR IN HOUSE CATERING? ‘Yes, the fact is that people want to be less formal, but still dress up and be part of the high echelon, so they still enjoy a picnic. After all, it’s a very British affair. We are seeing a larger number of weddings, christenings and even company days out wanting the casual, outdoor, but yet still formal dining.’

HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGES IN THE T YPES OF FOODS PEOPLE ARE ASKING FOR? WHAT IS BECOMING MORE FASHIONABLE? ‘At The Little Picnic Company we do our utmost try to keep things interesting, but there are certain dishes that are synonymous with the picnic such as the pork pie and frittata. We have seen an increase on awareness of dairy free and gluten free diets being requested, which we can cater for. As a professional chef, having worked both Michelin star establishments and running my own successful award winning restaurant with I have taken a lot of influence from there. However, the picnic comes really from my upbringing in NZ. The casual dining alfresco with picnics and barbeques and breaking bread with friends has always been the foresight for the picnics.’

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST POPULAR LIT TLE PICNIC COMPANY’ PICNIC CHOICE?

‘We have number of picnics, but as there are a few options customers tend to select ones with a wide range of food choices. At the battle proms they tend to go for the Park picnic as this is really suitable to most people’s palates and contains enough to see them through. At the races people tent to go for the more luxurious hampers as they are there all day, having their starters with Prosecco or Champagne and then progress to the main courses, and come back later for their desserts and cheese. Cricket days out they are more substantial and meaty so the British larder seems to be ever popular with these customers. All in all, it’s a very individual thing. This is why we have a varied selection to cater for the ever curious foodies out there and the not so adventurous.’

THE FOUR-STAR EVENT AT BURGHLEY IS SYNONYMOUS WITH OUTSIDE EATING AND CARPARK PICNICS, WITH A DEDICATED PICNIC CAR PARK. WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST TO INCLUDE IN THE PERFECT BURGHLEY PICNIC?

‘I would be mixing up our British larder and Eventer’s picnic to give a full meaty picnic for guests and the bubbles to compliment it. This would bring a great mix of tasty picnic staples and the little extras one would not always remember to bring to a picnic.’

FOR THE ‘LAST MINUTE’ PICNIC ORGANISER, WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU WOULD SUGGEST TO TAKE, THAT CAN BE EATEN WHILE ‘OUT ON COURSE’?

‘You need to have at least one nice filling item, something sweet and or savoury. Alongside this some picky bits are great as you can keep coming back without filling up your plates. They are a really sociable element of the picnic. You definitely need to remember water and something nice to drink be it alcoholic or a pressé or mum’s homemade lemonade. And don’t forget the plates, cutlery, napkins and glassware.’

To view the collections of Picnics available visit www.littlepicniccompany.co.uk The Little Picnic Company is based in Addlestone, Surrey KT15. Picnics can be pre ordered and collected or the company can arrange to deliver your hamper to you if you are within a 30 Mile Radius of their kitchen HQ (a delivery fee applies outside a 5-mile radius of their base). Children can be catered for with a ‘Little Picnic’ from £9.50, larger picnics start from £46.00.

BURGHLEY BITES . Celebrity Chef James Martin joins forces with Land Rover

T

o inspire this year’s Burghley picnickers, Land Rover, whose vehicles are renowned for their famous tailgate - a feature that is commonly used as the perfect accessory for a picnic, has worked with celebrity chef James Martin to create picnic recipes that will not only taste amazing but will improve, when made in advance and travelled to the event! The former Saturday Kitchen presenter explained: “It can be a real challenge keeping picnic food fresh when you have to travel a few hours to get to an event like The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, but these recipes are specifically designed so that they actually taste better after sitting in the back of a vehicle for a long time. The Burghley Bloomer is a variant of the Italian Sandwich. The idea of this is you do the preparation at home and bring it with you. The longer you leave it wrapped up, the better it tastes.”

THE BURGHLEY BLOOMER

Ingredients

1 x large round loaf of bread 200g of pesto 2 x balls of buffalo mozzarella, torn Selection of chargrilled vegetables, sliced lengthways: 1 x aubergines, 2x courgettes, 2x red/yellow peppers 2 x chicken breast, cut into strips A handful of rocket leaves Raw red onion – sliced 1x beef tomato, sliced Salt & pepper

Method

1. Cut a hole in the top of the loaf of bread and hollow it out so all you are left with is the crust and a lid. The idea being that it becomes like a container 2. Generously spread the pesto on the base of the hollowed loaf 3. Layer the mozzarella on top of the pesto, and then the chargrilled vegetables, followed by the chicken, rocket leaves, onions and tomatoes 4. Season with a little bit of salt and pepper 5. Press it down nice and flat so that you can fit as much filling as possible into the loaf 6. Repeat steps 2-5 so that the loaf is brimming with ingredients 7. Place the lid on top of the loaf and then wrap it tightly in cling film 8. The longer this can be left in the cling film the better it will taste, so pack it into the picnic in the back of the car and leave it alone until you are at your picnic destination 9. When you are ready to eat, remove the cling film and then slice it up in to chunks to serve

The Land Rover Tailgate Picnic Competition takes place on cross-country day at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials on Saturday 3rd September in the reserved car park. For more information visit www.burghley-horse.co.uk

WHERE TO STAY?

ith accommodation near to Burghley pre-booked months before the main event, you need to be on your toes to get a room. With this in mind, and looking for something a little different, the team at Uptown utilised a few local contacts and discovered this little gem... literally a stone’s throw from Burghley House.

THE PARISAN

The Parisian is situated the village of Tinwell, two miles from Stamford, owned by a local family, with a passion for horses and renovating period properties. A Grade II listed building, formerly a Georgian stable, the cottage was converted into a private luxury holiday cottage during 2012-13. It has a wonderful New England feel, after the owners stayed in Nantucket and decided to recreate that sophisticated, relaxed atmosphere. Furnished to an exceptionally high standard and with an amazing attention to detail, The Parisian is an ideal destination to unwind in after a long day eventing. The ground floor consists of an open-plan living room and kitchen, in a relaxed New England style with a limed oak floor, along with a separate stonefloored dining room. Both rooms have under-floor heating, and the bespoke kitchen offers fully kitted out luxury, should you wish to eat in or host a dinner party (the limed oak table seats six). Those with a love of tech won’t be disappointed. Over the beautiful limestone fireplace hangs a 3D TV, with satellite channels and a Blu-Ray player. Free WiFi is available throughout the cottage. The cottage sleeps two in its master bedroom suite. Fresh and airy but exceptionally cosy, this room consists of an American queen bed topped with a Wool Room alpaca duvet and a handmade oak headboard. BEHIND THE BRAND

U

ptown E Store (www.uptownestore.com) was launched in November 2014 and is the brainchild of eventing partnership Rachel Wakefield and Michael Wynne. The couple are familiar faces within the equine community, known widely for their high-end business Uptown Eventing. A business which continues to source the crème de la crème of horses for top international riders. (www.uptowneventing.co.uk) In 2016 no less than five Uptown Sourced horses were nominated for the Australian, Swedish, Japanese and American Rio Olympic teams. This follows the successes of the 2012 London Olympics where five Uptown sourced horses were selected to compete, including the two British Eventing Team Silver Medal Winners ridden by Mary King and William Fox-Pitt. This was a huge honour to the business and down to the breadth of contacts and experience that Uptown Eventing has developed over the years. As professional riders (eventing and show jumping), Michael and Rachel understand the need for high performance kit, which looks great, functional and stylish to wear. They also know that many professional, amateur riders, owners and spectators have busy lives and need access to the latest products, at the click of a button. With this concept in mind, their new venture, Uptown E Store, branches into leisure & competition riding clothing and gift retail. Rachel and Michael’s aim is to supply the best equestrian kit, accessories, gift and homeware that the market has to offer. Rachel has a love of fashion and personally collates the collections herself, which have an international feel, with the very best of British, European, American and Canadian brands. Her attention to detail, knowledge of performance fabrics and design, eye for new trends and fashion centric style sets Uptown E Store apart from more traditional retailers. The couples witty sense of humour come into play with their collections of high end giftware, featuring brands that also grace the shelves of top London department stores. Now all easily accessible from Uptown E Store, with excellent customer service and product guidance.

PINKSTER C

all it the raspberry revolution but there’s one gin that’s taking the social season by storm. Seen at Badminton Horse Trials in May, then the likes of the Serpentine Gallery Summer Party, Cowes Week and Henley Royal Regatta, this most tasty of tipples is popping up all over the place. Being big fans of all that’s new, pretty and decidedly social, the Uptown Team went to find out more… Pinkster is a premium gin that’s pink, proud and stands out from the crowd. Distilled in small batches, locally grown raspberries are then hand-steeped in the core spirit at the company’s HQ near Cambridge, creating its distinctive colour and flavour. The gin is deliciously dry, with a hint of fruit and an exceptionally smooth finish. There’s raspberry on the nose as the juniper comes through and then a slight spice that develops and lingers. For the perfect drink after a long day out eventing, serve with Fever-Tree tonic, a raspberry and a sprig of well-spanked fresh mint. Spanking the mint (clapping it in your hands before you place it in the glass on top of the ice) releases the minty aromas! The innovation behind Pinkster came about purely by accident when founder Stephen Marsh was experimenting at home and, after working his way through an entire fruit bowl, discovered that raspberry delivered the best flavour. Best of all, the raspberries are recycled, albeit slightly intoxicated, and sold in farm shops and food halls as Boozy Berries. Delicious dipped in chocolate or used in sorbets. (Warning – they pack quite a punch, but do count as one of your ‘5 a day’!) From his kitchen experiments Stephen’s business became a reality. He quit his finance director job to focus on his passion, with Pinkster becoming an increasingly popular ‘go to’ trade stand at events and the subtlety smooth gin being used by discerning bars across the country. A regular at Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Stephen said, ‘Burghley is only one of a handful of events that we attend year-in, year-out without question. We absolutely love it. Colourful crowds, elegant exhibitors and a great atmosphere. The only downside us that we seem to underestimate the amount of gin consumed by this discerning equestrian gathering. Not for 2016 though, we’re arriving with gallons of the stuff (famous last words)! Here’s to a splendid three days in the company of some fine British brands’. We could not put it better ourselves…cheers and enjoy! Pinkster Gin will be situated in the Lifestyle Pavillion at Burghley, close to The Celebrity Talk Area and The Big Screen. (Conveniently near to the Uptown Stand!) For more information and stockists visit www.pinkstergin.com Pinkster is represented across social media – look them up! @pinkstergin

THE WORLD OF WOOF WEAR Innovation, performance and style.

W

ith a tagline priding themselves in ‘Protection by Design’, popular brand Woof Wear have continued to offer affordable innovation for over thirty years. In 1981, Louise Woof pioneered the ‘Woof Boot’ - the first brushing boot to be made from neoprene. This was a major innovation compared with the traditional leather boots available at the time as it meant that horses could be protected with light, durable and easy to care for boots. Since its conception the brand has grown considerably and now boasts over 500 retailers across the UK. Woof Wear is the producer of the UK’s bestselling general-purpose brushing boot, alongside its ranges of protective horse wear for a range of disciplines and rider accessories. Speaking about the brand, Sales Director Ali Felton said ‘Woof Wear has been in existence since 1981 and we’re really proud of our heritage and our continued innovation with products. Alongside this we have always supported riders in all disciplines, for example, eventer, Kitty King has worked with us for over 10 years’. The use of technologically advanced materials and contemporary manufacturing processes have led to some innovative design by the brand. This September sees the launch of the Medical Hoof Boot, a solution to the problem of holding poultices and dressings in place on the hoof, enabling turnout to horses while they heal. Using considered design and robust materials such as Kevlar, the boot has an asymmetric zip to give the boot a really close fit (and prevent it opening) stopping bedding and other debris from getting inside. The Medical Hoof Boot was accidentally leaked on social media in August which pushed its announcement forward, with the boot itself being available nationwide from September. ‘We are massively excited about this product, it’s one of those things we all wish we’d had years ago! It’s certainly something that everyone should have in their horses first aid kit.’

tendons.

Also new to the Woof Wear range is the Dressage Wrap. A supportive and protective neoprene wrap, suited to those schooling at home and for pre-dressage warm up. The new Woof Wear Dressage Wrap is a quick and easy alternative to bandaging and offers support to the fetlock and

Smart and flexible, manufactured in the usual neutral colours and a punchy turquoise blue, the Dressage Wrap allows full flexibility of movement and the 7mm breathable neoprene keeps joints and tendons cool. The plush outer material allows for a wide range of strap adjustment around the leg. Woof Wear’s commitment to the continuous design and development of products has a focus on using cutting edge technology. Every product is considered fully, from horse boots to rider accessories through the choice of materials and the inclusion of clever techniques. These range from the ‘Release Profile Sole’ (patent pending) which aids rider safety to the concealed pocket in the suit bag to keep dressage tails crease free. The brand believes that even the smallest design features can turn a good product into a great one. Woof Wear has developed the use of three-dimensional Computer Aided Design to develop their horse boots and the latest 3-D scanning techniques to create a library of ‘virtual’ horse’s legs in all shapes and sizes on a computer. This allows the team to design the boot to fit different legs before we make the product. The result is a range of horse boots which gives optimum fit, comfort and protection. The brand is also proud of its support to riders across the disciplines including Eventers Kitty King and Izzy Taylor who appreciate Woof Wear’s functional, contemporary design, ease of use and above all levels of protection. To view the Woof Wear collection ‘in the flesh’ at Burghley Horse Trails visit Townfields Saddlery, Wychanger Barton Saddlery or Gibsons of Newmarket.

Alternatively, the full range can be purchased online at www.woofwear.com, or via their selected stockists nationally.

THE UPTOWN GUIDE TO A/W TRENDS Fashion trends, filtering down from the couture collections, are playing an increasing role in influencing the country and equestrian clothing market. In this vis a vis game, our traditional tailoring is becoming updated with performance fabrics and manufacturing techniques which make them more wearable and functional. While our traditional equestrian detailing, tailoring, and heritage manufacturing still influences designers across the globe. So what will fashionista riders be influenced by this season and what are the ‘trends’ filtering down to the field?

1. QUILTED JACKETS While camping with a friend in 1970, Norma Kamali had a ‘eureka’ moment on her chilly journey to the bathroom in the middle of the night. ‘When I wrapped my sleeping bag around me,’ the designer recalls, ‘it was clear that this could be the warmest coat that you could ever have’. From this moment the quilted jacket was born. Massively popular across the disciplines, and a trend that keeps growing, metallic it up for something bold and cosy. Montar Sophie Navy Light Down Jacket - £105.95

2. PEARLS & SEQUINS

Like it or love it, the fashion for ‘bling’ seems here to stay, be it jewellery or clothing for human or horses. At Uptown we like to go the extra mile, in offering the very best of the best. Netherlands based Judi Manche, manufactures handmade belts, browbands, fly veils and headcollars amongst other luxury items. Match your belt to your browband, for total on trend sparkle. With a pocket for everything, this truly utilitarian style is chic, flattering and functional for competition and leisure riders. Ditch the gold buttons and braiding and opt for sharp, classic tailoring in performance fabrics, with tech detailing. Noel Asmar Equestrian The Rider Jacket - Punch & Black - £195.00

4. LEOPARD A style classic and one that keeps coming back, leopard print first rose to popularity when featured in a 1947 Christian Dior collection. Ditching its Bet Lynch connotations and now an A lister’s love it comes in a variety of colours and iterations this season. We say use it for accessories and detailing to keep it neat and subtle, not safari. Montar Grey, white, blue and brown Leopard Belts - £24.00
