WHAT DOES “THE CLOUD” REALLY MEAN?

COVER STORY

Generally speaking, the cloud covers every IT service offered anywhere on the Internet. Some providers speak of the cloud when they refer to a single pc with virtualization software; other providers have entirely redundant environments with at least two geographically different locations. The choice is not getting easier for professionals, nor is it simple to distinguish between the available solutions. After all, both scenarios described here are part of “the Cloud”. by Peter Witsenburg

UP magazine

Tamara Vyncke, our Marketing Coordinator, got the chance to have an open, face-to-face conversation with the charismatic CEO Jochen Maertens about simplicity in business, the Cloud, and the future.

DO YOU THINK THAT THE THEME “SIMPLICITY” CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN IT? GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF SIMPLICITY IN YOUR ORGANIZATION. Simplicity is definitely a theme that is very much alive at Synergics. I can say with certainty that striving towards simplicity is one of the goals in our organization. We don’t have a complex internal decision-making hierarchy, so we are able to keep things as simple as possible.

HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT SIMPLICITY TOWARDS YOUR CUSTOMERS? For our customers we have simplified our change request procedure as much as possible by applying the KanBan lean system on ITIL. Generally KanBan is used in the manufacturing sector, but we were convinced it would prove advantageous for us as well. The system allows us to handle customers’ change requests in a faster, less cumbersome manner without going through a unnecessarily long process. By using a “Fast Queue” system even the nonstandard requests can be handled speedily.

ARE THERE EXAMPLES OF PROCESSES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SIMPLIFY EVEN MORE? Even though we are very pleased with the improvements that KanBan has realized for our change request systems, I still think the process could be even more simplified. The administrative overhead remains. Some of these tasks take longer than solving the issue itself. Another complex procedure I would like to see improved is the complexity of software licensing. Unfortunately we have little influence on this process but it has a very large impact on our business. It is a process that unfortunately remains hopelessly complex.

WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT? Well I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I lie awake at night, but I do worry about the dichotomy between commodity and complexity in our business. Our business & services are very complex, however they are often still viewed as a commodity. UP magazine

He was eager to learn and start developing new skills to help us start and book our first successes. Looking back today, we have had a great start and that engineer hasn’t had a week of rest since. Babe Ruth once said: “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.â€? Having the luck to have found some great people that joined us with the same spirit we prove that the above quote is true and every person that has joined us ever since has helped towards where we stand now. And where do we stand today? One of our first customers in Belgium was Lidl. It was a straight forward migration to an EMC platform, but still we were somewhat nervous about the outcome. We soon delivered and have had many very satisfied customers since, running several different EMC platforms. Every company has challenges ahead of them. We
