Solar Powered Catamaran to Cruise Around the World
B
eam me down, Scotty! It’s time to go sailing across the oceans of good old planet Earth. Well, not exactly sailing in the pre-21st century sense. Imagine gliding across oceans in a silent, pollution-free, 100 percent sun-powered catamaran that looks more like the Star Trek Voyager than a sailboat. Geneva, Switzerlandbased Planet Solar isn’t just imagining it, and with the help of American photovoltaic manufacturer Sun Power they’re building the boat in Germany. Approximately 5,000 square feet of Sun Power’s next generation PV cells will be incorporated into the skin of the catamaran. The revolutionary boat was designed by a team of international engineers and construction of the solar catamaran is expected to be completed in February 2010. The catamaran will be the first solar boat to embark on an around-the-world voyage. The 25,000-plus mile voyage will last 140 days, with an average speed of eight knots. The two-man crew will cross the Atlantic Ocean, the Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and finally the Suez Canal, to return to the Mediterranean. Planet Solar’s sun-powered boat is scheduled to stop in New York City in 2011. I don’t know about anyone else, but I plan on being one of the people who hop on board and get a ride and tour. With any luck, maybe the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor will have a gigantic Claes Oldenburg- or Christo-like solar backpack on by then. —Paul McGinniss
