Ear to the Ground 2012 Reading List Once you’ve caught up on your backlog of Upstate Gardeners’ Journals (which, by the way, you can do online if you have misplaced your copies—just go to and click on the magazine image), you might want to dig in to some books. Here are a few we like. The Heirloom Life Gardener, Hyperion, 2011. Jere Gettle is a highly motivated, fascinating person, a savant of sorts. Just reading about him is exhausting. This book, which he co-authored with his wife Emilee, mixes basic, beginner-to-intermediate information with little bits of his life experiences thrown in—and he’s had a few. Growing Shrubs and Small Trees in Cold Climates, University of Minnesota Press revised edition, 2011. Often, homeowners plant trees that look cute in the nursery but are ultimately way too big for their space. This team-written book is an excellent guide to more appropriately-sized material and a good browse. Grow the Good Life, Rodale, 2011. Need inspiration to get out there and start a vegetable garden? Look no further. Michele Owens will convince you, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that it’s a very good idea.

From the Publisher—On the Cover We try to mix up our Directory covers from year to year. Sometimes it is a collage of new plants being brought to market in the coming year, and other times we just look back through the year and pick out some favorites. This year it’s the latter. Clockwise from top left: Japanese maple. Linwood Gardens, Pavilion, NY, May. Photo courtesy Ryland Koopus. A group of us ride our bikes from Caledonia to Linwood Gardens every spring. My brother Ry came along to drive the “SAG wagon,” which as it turns out was a good thing—one of our party took a very nasty spill. Skunk cabbage, Christine Sevilla Wetlands Preserve, Caledonia, NY, April. I’ve always wanted to go out salamander watching with Carol Southby, and finally got my chance on this gorgeous early spring afternoon. No salamanders, but we saw birds, butterflies, and acres of skunk cabbage. Variegated fuchsia, Good Earth Greenhouses, Clifton Springs, NY, April. Terri Sauerhafer’s retail establishment is only open for six weeks a year (you can also find her at the Rochester Public Market), but she always has the newest, coolest annuals and perennials. Osteospermum ‘Zion Copper Amythest’, Good Earth Greenhouses, April. Osteos, as Terri would tell you, are all the rage right now and that there is considerable effort being put into breeding doubles, trailers, and plants that tolerate more heat and stay open at night. I brought this home and it performed well for me all year (and still had buds on it in December). Begonia, Garden Walk Buffalo, July. This plant was hanging in what was probably my favorite garden on Garden Walk—and not just because the head gardener there, Carol Siracuse, is a family friend. This was my first time visiting Garden Walk, and it was astounding. Next year I will be more prepared—I plan to bring my bike. Tropicanna canna lily, Caledonia NY, July. Rochester people, do you remember Lisa Hutchurson Lynch? She used to be the home and garden reporter at the Democrat and Chronicle. Now she works in public relations, specifically for Tesselaar Plants. She gave us three gigantic Tropicannas to trial and I fell in love with their incredible foliage. Thalictrum, Cornell Plantations, Ithaca, June. On the first Saturday in June each year, we take a busload of garden enthusiasts from Buffalo and Batavia to Ithaca for shopping, food and fun. (The Rochester Civic Garden Center takes a busload too, departing Victor.) It’s a wonderful trip—join us! Currant, Caledonia, NY, May. My mom used to make currant jelly, so I thought it would be fun to grow a bush. This thing has grown like a weed—it is huge!—and flowers profusely, but I never see berries, so no jelly for me. The birds get them first.

What to do in the garden In January and February

ecycle your Christmas tree. Cut off the branches and place them over your garden beds. They will capture snow and keep the plants more protected over the winter. Create window boxes using evergreens and other interesting looking sticks and dried plant material you find outdoors. Go through your new gardening catalogs and make a list of plants and seeds you’d like to grow in your garden this season. Buy or order your choices as soon as possible. Many new varieties and old favorites often sell out. Buy the supplies you’ll need for starting seeds and for repotting your houseplants. Many seeds need an early start indoors or in a greenhouse. Leeks and onions for instance should be started in flats at this time. Hardy perennials can be started early. Many perennial seed types need a chilling period to germinate.  Using a cold frame is the best, but if you don’t have one there are alternatives. A good idea is to plant seed in flats and place the flats in a cool area. Plant cold perennial types in flats and place them in a cold garage or other outdoor protected area. Foxglove does well with this treatment. Keep the flats slightly damp and loosely covered with clear plastic. It’s OK if they freeze. You can even place the plastic covered flats outdoors covered with at least three inches of mulch. This treatment imitates wintering over the seed, like perennials that reseed naturally outdoors. The seeds won’t start growing until the outdoor temperature warms in early spring. This is an excellent time of year to give your houseplants a nice cleaning and repotting and also for propagating new ones. Most houseplants are very easy to propagate. An early start in spring is the best time to start growing these new plants. Starting new houseplants now will give you plenty of little gifts to give come spring. Take notice of how the sun light crosses your property. Although this information will change slightly over the seasons, the information regarding sun fall will help you when planning for best plant placement. The information will also help a lot when planning new garden beds or refurbishing old beds. Take note of plants that didn’t do well last season. They may benefit by being transplanted to a different area of your garden that receive more or less sun light.

If you’re thinking of starting a new garden or redesigning what you have, this time of year is a good time to get your plans in order. Without all the greenery to distract you, it’s easier to make a plan for your yard and garden. Examine the trees and shrubs on your property. Cut out and clear away dead branches. Call your local tree service and make an early spring appointment if there is a problem with any of your trees.  Many badly damaged trees can be saved with good professional help. Prune out over grown branches on shrubs and trees. Go lightly; don’t cut out major brunches. They can’t heal over properly this time of year. Cut out small branches, pruning to shape the plant. Clean and sharpen your gardening tools. Buy a new Journal to keep track of your 2010 garden plantings. Be creative and put little drawings along side of your notes. You don’t have to be an artist. Since you’re probably the only one to view the journal, you’ll get a kick out of your little drawings some day. If others do get the chance to see your journals, the drawings will add to its interest. The most important thing gardeners and all others can do this time of year is feed the birds. They are truly our best allies in the garden. Keeping them strong and healthy during the cold cruel winter is the best we can do for them. They do so much for our gardens during the growing season by simply eating bugs. —Jacqueline Siddall, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida Co., Master Gardener

Are you planning to have your space landscaped by a professional? Are you planning a new stone walkway or garden wall? This is the best time of year to hire a landscaper or stonemason. Landscapers and hardscapers aren’t very busy in January and February and they welcome the business. Beginning the project in the winter makes their job, planning and designing your landscape, more straightforward. With just the bones of your garden visible, it gives the designer a clearer perspective. It’s not unusual to interview many landscapers before you find one you can work with. When you do hire someone, it takes a little time to come up with a final plan for your space. If you’re having stonework done you’ll have to plenty of time to pick out your stone. If the stone you choose has to be ordered, the sooner that’s done, the better. It’s good to have your project supplies, stone and objects d’art on early order. Work on your new garden will have a jump start once spring finally arrives.
