emember when the University Press started doing those crazy top-10 lists? Well this time, we’re giving you 10 of them — all at once. Every Friday the staff and I would compile a list of whatever crazy, silly, stupid or philosophical topic was on our minds and deliver our list to you each week. Since summer is now here, we’ve come up with what we believe are the best ways to relieve the feared summer doldrums. In this top-10 special issue, you’ll find lists that map out the best places to go in
Florida: beaches, bars and vacation spots. But this issue’s not just about getting you on your feet. We’ve got more lists for movies, books and video games. There is so much to do on this list of lists that if you wanted to do it all you would probably spend an insane amount of money and have to watch your possessions get repossessed... so don’t do that. Bottom line: There are enough options here to keep you busy for the entire summer break. So get comfy in your lounge chair and top off that cool iced tea. Here’s the UP’s top-10 guide to summer:

S UM TO P 10
elcome to the summer of superheroes and sequels. Summertime means big Hollywood blockbusters, and the fun’s already started. Let’s be honest, going to the movies is an expensive venture. Aside from the overpriced ticket, you could easily blow a week’s salary at the concession stand. But seeing a movie like Transformers on the big screen or in IMAX makes for an experience like no other. Every movie on this list, aside from the ones already out, are definitely on the UP’s must see list. So kick back and grab some popcorn. We’re counting down this year’s top ten summer blockbusters:
Basically, in the summer of 1979 a group of kids decide to film a movie on a Super 8 video camera that they found. While filming, they witness a crazy trail wreck that sets loose a crazy monster that begins to terrorize the town. If that doesn’t get you interested, this movie is brought to us by writer/director J.J. Abram who was behind works as Star Trek and Lost. If you own the video game Portal 2 then you may have gotten a sneak preview of this movie along with a really interesting interactive virtual trailer.
COWBOYS & ALIENS This movie is about exactly what the title says: Cowboys and Aliens dueling in the old west. Director Jon Favreau basically took a story concept that sounds like it came from a five year old boy and made it into a movie. But don’t let the title fool you. This movie looks amazing. Guns, explosions, aliens, lasers and an old Harrison Ford as a cowboy? This sounds good to us.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
The X-Men movie franchise has a little bit of ground to make up this year. X-Men: The Last Stand was…well… bad to say the least. Although entertaining, X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn’t do much better. This movie, however, might be the answer to Marvel’s mutant movie woes. X-Men: First Class is basically the origin story of everything, and we could not be more excited to see it. But let’s keep our fingers crossed. X-Men fans might rise up in anger if this one bombs.
TRANSFORMERS 3: DARK OF THE MOON
Was the second movie way too long? Just a tad. Did it have racist connotation? Yes… Yes it did. Were there lots of explosions and heart pounding moments? Indeed there were. Are we jacked up about seeing it happen all over again? Damn straight. When it comes to action, no one does it better than director Michael Bay. Based on the movie trailer for Transformers 3, this movie looks like its budget was more than the national debt. Ten bucks to see it in theaters will definitely be worth our money.
It may seem odd that actor Chris Evens portrays both Captain America and the Human Torch, which creates quite the confusion in the Marvel Comics world, but we don’t care. Captain America continues The Avengers movie subplot and inches us even closer to one of the most anticipated superhero movies ever. But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s kick back and enjoy the origin story of Mr. Avenger himself, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES
Jack Sparrow is back. Honestly, that should be all the explanation needed. While some critics may argue another Pirates movie is a bad idea, we say nay, nay. Sparrow is like that drunk friend at a party who makes you laugh when he says and does clumsy things. You know it’s a problem, but you want to keep him around to see what he does next.
Despite mixed reviews, this is a must see for anyone who has been following the Marvel movies since the first Iron Man in 2008. You may be wondering how much of a dude slinging a hammer you can take, but this movie does not disappoint. It stays relatively true to the Thor origin story from the comics, and packs quite a punch when it comes to the action sequences. Make sure you stay till the end of the credits for a preview of the next Avenger movie.
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HOLLOWS: PART 2 This movie hits the number two spot for two reasons: One, we will finally get closer to arguably the best book and movie in the series. And two, hardcore Harry Potter fans would hold us hostage if we put this any lower on the list…seriously. Still, this movie looks amazing. The only problem is we will all be craving more when it’s finally over. Television series anyone?
THE HANGOVER PART II
The time gap between DC comic movies seems to be pretty big, but if the Green Lantern can deliver as well as the recent Batman movies, the wait might be worth it. Ryan Reynolds is double dipping in the comic world, as he also plays Deadpool from X-Men in the Marvel universe. This seems to be a common theme among actors these days, but a Green Lantern origins movie was a long time coming. All we need now is a Justice League movie setup…please DC?.

MOVIE S WOR TH PA YING
The hangover gang returns for a second bachelor party as Stu (Ed Helms) is getting married. This time the location is Bangkok, Thailand, and once again the guys find themselves in a post-blackout mess. Repetitive? We don’t think so. Part one was so entertaining that watching it happen all over again in a new location is fantastic. Is it wrong that we memorized the words to the tiger dream song? Nope. UPRESSONLINE.COM

f there’s one thing South Florida summers are known for, it’s the overwhelming heat. You could break a sweat from standing outside for less than five minutes. So to give your sun-drenched skin and dehydrated bodies a break from the overbearing summer sun, we’ve compiled a list of awesome things to do that will still get you out of the house when you feel cooped up. We’re counting down the top 10 indoor activates to escape the heat:
07. 08. 09. 10.
Pick a mall, any mall. They all have their own interesting features and charms. Whether you go to shop or just walk around and browse, the mall is a great place to go when it gets too hot. Main reason: a working air conditioner. Really, any place with a working air unit will suffice, but why not make it somewhere a little more entertaining — like a mall?
The best way to forget you’re sweating to death in the scorching heat is to imagine yourself on top of a mountain with a cool breeze running through your hair. And when you discover that method never works, the next best option is to take a trip to the ice skating rink. It’s one of the only buildings that will actually make you want to put on a jacket in the summertime. It’s also fun to watch people fall down on the ice. Unless you are one of those people.
MIAMI SUPERCON For four days every summer, the comic book world unites in the Miami Airport Convention Center to put on Miami Supercon. Comic collectors, cosplayers and superhero fans alike all flock to this event for what is essentially a scaled-down version of the San Diego Comic-Con. This year from July 1 to 4 you can enjoy air conditioning and a nerdtopia of entertainment.
MIAMI SCIENCE MUSEUM If you’re going to find indoor shelter from the heat, you might as well learn something while you’re there. The Miami Science Museum is a pretty awesome venue. Not only is it visually striking, but it houses its own planetarium that’s open to the public daily. In other words, there is a giant room where you can sit and gaze at the stars while music blasts to a laser show. It’s like a really awesome rock concert.
From one extreme to another, indoor go-karts is an insane adrenaline rush. Located in Fort Lauderdale, it’s the only place in South Florida to race gokarts indoors. The karts go up to 45 mph and race along a half-mile track. And when you’re waiting for your next race, you can hang out at the indoor mini-golf course or bowling alley. Yeah. This place is enormous and awesome.
BEER PONG TOURNAMENTS It’s the fastest-growing sport on college campuses and, whether you enjoy playing for fun or money, it’s an awesome way to get out of the heat. Host a tournament of your own at a house or take on teams at one of the many tournaments at bars like O’Malley’s Sports Bar in Margate. Every Wednesday you can enter a team to be in a beer pong tournament that usually lasts all night.
LASER QUEST You may have played laser tag when you were a kid, and if you didn’t, it’s still an awesome activity. Located in Sunrise, Laser Quest is an awesome little place that makes laser tag awesome for adults. Every night, Laser Quest hosts Ironman Missions, which put you in the laser pit for 30 heart-pounding minutes. The pit is dark and blasted with fog, lasers and music. It’s like being in a sci-fi movie. If you think you’re too cool for laser tag, just one game will get you hooked.
JAXSON’S ICE CREAM PARLOUR
Ice cream and air conditioning — the perfect combo to escape the blazing summer sun. Jaxson’s isn’t just any ice cream place, it’s a South Florida icon. Jaxson’s has been serving ice cream since 1956 and has been in the same location on Federal Highway in Dania Beach ever since. You can get ice cream right from the walkup counter, or you can have a real treat and take a seat inside and gaze upon hundreds of items of pop-culture memorabilia that cover the walls. If you’re really feeling daring, have yourself the kitchen sink, which is literally a kitchensink-sized bowl of ice cream. If you finish, you can keep the bowl, but at that point, you’ve probably already passed out at the table from the ice cream coma.
If you’re going to spend your summer days playing video games, then it’s good to get out of the house once in a while. And if you’re going to leave the house, why not go where you really want to be: he arcade. GameRoom, located at the Oasis at the Sawgrass Mills Mall, is an awesome arcade filled with modern and classic games. What makes it even better is the sports bar inside. It’s like a Dave & Busters, only not as expensive and with better food. Every Tuesday and Thursday, $10 will let you play all night to your heart’s desire. Plus, it’s 18 and over after 9 p.m.
Located in Miami, this is essentially a giant building with a bunch of rock climbing walls in it. And it’s freakin’ awesome. For $15 you can go buck wild and act like a monkey for an entire day. Just be careful, it may look easy, but it’s actually more difficult than you think. Not to worry, though — there are trainers literally bouncing off the walls to help you out.

ummer is a time of recreation and what better way to spend your time than going to a concert with your friends? Whether you are into rock, hip-hop, country or pop, there’s a concert out there for everyone. This summer, a plethora of popular bands and musical artists are flocking to South Florida to rock our socks. To help you decide what show is worth your time and money, here are the top ten upcoming summer concerts:
SADE AND JOHN LEGEND July 16 - American Airlines Arena
Not exactly a raging concert like the rest of the acts on the list, but Sade and John Legend know how to put on a jazzy soulful R&B concert. With each artist promoting new albums, you can bet the American Airlines Arena will be jam packed. What would make it more of a concert to remember is if Sade and Legend did a duet.
DEF LEPPARD AND HEART June 15 - Cruzan Amphitheatre
Classic rock fans get your wallets ready. This is just one of the awesome classic concerts happening this summer. We actually might be a little more excited to see the crowd than the actual show. Def Leppard concerts are notorious for drugged out fans. Of course we would never condone doing drugs, but we do condone rock and roll and everything that comes with it.
June 8: Hard Rock Live
They may be old, but they can still rock. ZZ Top is known for their crazy long beards, spinning guitars and awesome solos. Last time ZZ Top was in South Florida was for Sun Fest 2010. They would have been back in 2009 with Aerosmith, but Steve Tyler fell off the stage in South Dakota and broke his hip screwing up the whole tour for everyone. But finally, the blues rock masters will return with all their bearded goodness.
July 22 - American Airlines Arena
The pop princess is back on tour with a brand new album. Her single Till the World Ends peaked at number three on the Billboard 100. You either love her or hate her. If anything, she’s the celebrity people love to hate, but can’t we just “leave Britney alone” as the Youtube sensation Chris Crocker said? Whether you like her or not, Spears is known for putting on glamorous concerts. So stop pretending you hate her and admit she’s still hot.
RIHANNA AND CEE LO GREEN July 14 - Bank Atlantic Center
Rihanna is probably more popular now than she ever was before with her single S&M hit number one on Billboard. There’s no doubt that her musical career is going a lot more smoothly than the comeback of her ex, Chris Brown. Joining her on the tour is Cee Lo Green, who has become a national craze with his single F**k You. So going to this concert means even if it Cee Lo turns out to be a one hit wonder, you can at least say you were there.

June 11 - Bank Atlantic Center
Katy Perry has been on fire on the Billboard charts. Her single E.T., featuring Kanye West, peaked at number one over the course of May. Bottom line: Perry is hot right now. She seems to be rolling out the hits with no end in sight. If you’re a fan, this is a must see concert.
July 5 - Hard Rock Live
Yes. They are still alive. Mötley Crüe is back and on tour. And what better place is there to put on a hard rock show than the Hard Rock? Alright, so the majority of this concert’s crowd may be over the age of forty, but dude…it’s Mötley Crüe, one of the great hair metal bands of the eighties. They may not be able to move around on stage very much anymore, but they still know how to rock hard.
U2 June 29 - Sun Life Stadium U2 is said to be the world’s most famous and popular band. The fact that they booked Sun Life Stadium, with over 75,000 seats available for the taking, proves their popularity. Last person to pack the stadium was Paul McCartney last year in April. If you don’t know who U2 is, you should. Their music is a world influence of love and peace. How could you hate that?
TAYLOR SWIFT June 2 - Bank Atlantic Center U2, we’re really happy for you, and we’re gonna let you finish, but Taylor Swift is the second greatest summer concert of 2011. The fact that she can book a place like the Bank Atlantic Center proves that she has become quite the mega star. Swift’s latest album Speak Now is essentially filled with her middle finger anthems to her exboyfriends. It’s highly entertaining, extremely catchy and we can’t wait to see it live.
VANS WARPED TOUR July 30 - Cruzan Amphitheatre
TOP T E
Vans Warped Tour is the largest concert of the year with over 40 plus rock bands gathering in one place to put on an all day, nonstop, heart pounding, ear bleeding, punk-pop hardcore music spectacle. It’s a time to catch up on all the concerts you may have missed throughout the year. And even if you aren’t a big fan of any band on the show list, the crowd alone is enough to entertain you for an entire day. From people with multicolored mohawks to women flashing the crowd, Vans Warped Tour is easily our number one pick for must see summer concerts. UPRESSONLINE.COM

DIRT 3 XBOX 360 and PS3
LEGO PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN XBOX 360, PS3, WII, DS, 3DS, PSP, PC If you’ve ever played any of the LEGO video games, then you know how amazingly fun they are. The humorously quirky cinematic and simple game play is what makes the LEGO game franchise a hit. In this game, LEGO incorporates the story lines of all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, including the new one coming out this summer. So unless you want a spoiler, we suggest you see the movie first.
RED FACTION: ARMAGEDDON 6/7 - XBOX 360, PS3, PC
The fourth installment in the Red Faction series, this third-person shooter takes place half a century after the events of its predecessor. The newly freed Mars is once again under attack as the surface is deemed uninhabitable. Space, guns, alien guts and a big fat “Rated M” label. Please and thank you THQ. The Red Faction franchise proves that the violent sci-fi shooter games never get old.
INFAMOUS 2 6/7 - PS3 Electricity-slinging superhuman Cole McGrath returns in this highly anticipated sequel. This time with a new morality system that gives you power benefits. Choose good, and your lightning has an icy touch. Choose evil, and your electricity will pack a little heat with its punch. If you don’t have a PlayStation 3, this game would make getting one very worthwhile.
MAX PAYNE 3
LEGEND OF ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME 3D
This remake of a classic brings the Zelda franchise into the world of 3D. While it would have been nice to see a completely brand-new Zelda game, seeing a classic in 3D is still pretty exciting. Hopefully the game will bring some new features to the storyline we all know. If you’ve been on the fence about the Nintendo 3DS, this would be the reason to get one.
MORTAL KOMBAT XBOX 360, PS3
Mortal Kombat has been through some rough years, but the MK we’ve been waiting for has finally been made. This ninth installment of the franchise takes the world of MK to a whole new level of violence. If you think politicians spend too much time fighting about video game violence now, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This one will have them in a furious rage. That makes it all the more worth playing.
DUKE NUKEM FOREVER
6/14 - XBOX 360, PS3, PC
After 11 years of development and lots of skepticism, Duke Nukem Foreveris is finally almost upon us with its over-the-top action, rude comedy and “adult situations.” It’s been 15 years since the last Duke Nukem game. With that much of a time gap, we’d better be getting the best sci-fi shooter game of our generation. Of course that’s wishful thinking, but the game does look pretty intense.
XBOX 360, PS3, PC
Arguably one of the best games of the year, this quirky puzzle game sequel brings us another dose of witty hysterical dialogue, simple game play and challenging puzzles. The single-player mode will last you around 10 hours, but it doesn’t end there. Grab a friend and take on the co-op mode for even more of a challenge.
Rockstar Games once again pushes the envelope of video games with this ground-breaking title. Set in the Golden Age of Hollywood, players take the role of a detective in the LAPD. But what makes the game so unique is the new technology used to capture every nuance of the actor’s facial expressions. If you were to put down your controller and just watch all the cut scenes, you would forget you were watching animation. Whether you like the concept of the game or not, this is a must-play for any gamer just for that reason.
L.A. NOIRE XBOX 360, PS3
8/1 ON XBOX 360, PS3, PC
Payne is back. The movie may have been a bomb, but that’s no reason to end the video game franchise. Originally slated to come out in May, this game got pushed back to August. Hopefully that means it will be even better than anticipated. The Max Payne series is well overdue for a next-generation console upgrade. The last game was released on PS2. Remember the good ol’ days of not having to worry about network hacks?
O Y B M O NU T S E GAM
ummertime brings out the best in entertainment, and video games are no exception. Hardcore and casual gamers alike can find enjoyment in a good summer game. The good news is it is safe to play video games without fear of failing a class. The bad news: The games on this list might cause you to never leave your chair — if you consider that bad. Some of the best titles of the year are almost, if not already, upon us. Each game on this list has come out in the last month or is going to be released over the course of the summer. So warm up your trigger finger and dust off the consoles. Here are this summer’s top 10 must-play video games:

The hit international rally racing game from developer THQ returns in the franchise’s third installment. This time it has all new tracks, cars and crashes. TOP TEN PLACES IN FLORIDA TO GET YOUR SUMMER ON
lorida is known as being a vacation spot in this country, but how many of us who live here have actually vacationed in our own state? There are tons of places to go in South Florida alone, but not too many people venture further than a few miles from their home. You don’t have to leave the state to have a great vacation. Some places are just a day’s drive away. To help you make your vacation decisions this summer, here are our top ten Florida Vacation Destinations:
10. WALT DISNEY WORLD’S EPCOT Out of all the theme parks in Disney, Epcot is arguably the best one for two reasons: It’s the largest park in Disney, and you can drink around the world in a day. In Epcot’s World Showcase, you can start off the day with a pint of Guinness and work your way around the world enjoying food, beer and wine from select countries like Italy, Germany, France and more. One word of advice: Do the rides before you take on the World Showcase. There’s nothing more humiliating than getting sick on the ride, Soarin’.
9. RAPIDS WATER PARK Located in West Palm Beach, Rapids is the most easily accessible destination on this list. When you’re done risking your life on one of the nine daring plunges, take a load off on the lazy river. The only thing that could make the lazy river even better would be a six pack floating next to you. Unfortunately, that’s frowned upon at Rapids but we wouldn’t be surprised if someone has tried it before.
8. ST. AUGUSTINE As the oldest European city in the United States, St. Augustine provides a historical experience. But it also provides an experience like no other. In the historical district you can take a stroll down the old streets of the city and even take a swig from The Fountain of Youth. Fun fact: It won’t keep you young and it tastes terrible. If history isn’t really your thing, you can relax on the beaches of St. Augustine which are state parks and public areas.
7. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER In an age when space travel is coming to an end, Kennedy Space Center is an awesome place to learn about NASA and check out its facilities. You can experience what it would be like to be an astronaut, eat space food or just hang out in the rocket garden, which features historical and modern rockets.
6. LOVER’S KEY Lovers Key is a pristine barrier island off the coast of Fort Myers Beach. It’s an awesome place to relax and unwind, but its isolated areas are what gives the island it’s name. Most of the island has not been developed, which leaves many secluded areas where you and your significant other can disappear. The only downside is that the island is a state park so it is only open from eight in the morning until sun down. 10 MAY 24, 2011
5. ANNA MARIA ISLAND This tropical getaway is the essence of relaxation. Anna Maria Island is known for its white sand beaches, clear seas and brightly painted buildings. The city is packed with unique shops, restaurants and miles of pristine beaches. If you can’t get relaxed at this place then you aren’t human. It’s said that you will feel like you’re on a private island—except there will be lots of other people.
4. ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE Owned by Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure is one of the most popular theme parks in Florida. The newly built Harry Potter world is currently its biggest attraction. You can step right into Hogwarts or take a trip down Diagon Alley and have a cup of butterbeer, which is essentially cream soda with whipped cream. If Harry Potter isn’t really your thing, then you can head over to the world of Marvel comics and ride The Hulk, which will definitely make you reconsider lunch.
3. WET ‘N WILD Essentially a larger version of Rapids, Wet ‘n Wild is one of America’s most popular water parks. You can chill in the lazy river, relax by the wave pool, or plunge into the slides Black Hole and Brainwash. These slides resemble an engineer’s twisted experience on acid. There is so much to do in this water park that you won’t have a moment of boredom.
2. KEY WEST There is so much to do in Key West that you could end up there for an entire month. You can snorkel, sail, fish and even swim with dolphins. You can visit the southernmost point of the U.S. and party at one of the many bars on Duval Street. But the best part about Key West is you don’t actually have to do anything. If you want to just hang out on the beach for a week, then do it. Everyone is so carefree it’s the perfect place to get away.
1. AQUATICA WATER PARK Located in Orlando, Aquatica features 36 waterslides, six rivers and lagoons and more than 80,000 square feet of beach. If that’s not enough to get you excited, the water park features the Dolphin Plunge, which hurls riders through 250 feet of clear tubes in a crystal-blue lagoon with black-and-white Commerson’s dolphins. You can also take a relaxing trip down Loggerhead Lane, which is essentially a lazy river that sends you through the heart of a giant fish tank.
TOP TEN PLACES TO HAVE FUN IN THE SUN
5. PANAMA CITY BEACH It doesn’t have to be spring break to party on Panama City Beach. But a hardy party isn’t the only reason to visit this beach. It’s also a popular destination for water sports like sailing and jet skiing. And if you like to SCUBA, there are tons of sunken ships just off the coast to go explore. If for some reason the beach isn’t your thing, in which case it’s odd you’re reading this list, Panama City was ranked the third best golf city in America by Golf Digest. Underwater golfing around the sunken ships, anyone?
4. SEBASTIAN INLET Sebastian is not only the best surfing spot in Florida, also home to the Sebastian Pro Surfing Contest, which is the largest annual tournament on the Atlantic Seaboard. This makes it known as one of the best surf spots on the east coast. You don’t have to waste your money traveling to California or Hawaii when you already have a word renowned surf spot right in your home state.
3. BAHIA HONDA KEY This Key is made up of several different beaches in the Florida Keys, and is just north of Big Pine Key. These beaches are known for their white sand and crystal clear water. Sandspur beach was ranked number seven on Travel Channel’s Best Florida Beaches. Bahia Honda Key has plenty of sports to participate in like snorkeling, jetskiing and kayaking. Although, if you just want a place to relax, this would definitely be it.
2. LUMMUS BEACH Located about an hour away from Boca Raton along South Beach, Lummus is one of the most popular Florida beach destinations – and it’s topless sunbathing tolerant. Lummus Beach is a popular destination for fashion magazine photo shoots, which is why it is also known as Glitter Beach to residents. You can enjoy the “view” on the beach all day and then head over to the strip for some awesome nightlife entertainment.
1. SIESTA KEY Siesta Key is famous for its crystal white sands, emerald green waters, beautiful sunsets and abundant wildlife. The sand on Siesta Beach is 99% pure quartz, which makes it soft and cool. This beach is so delightful that is has consistently been called the finest white sand beach in the world. With over 40 acres of land, there’s definitely a spot to relax. This is without a doubt our number one beach choice. Too bad the UP doesn’t operate off of Siesta Key.
ummer is a time of relaxation, leisure and getting rid of uneven tan lines. It’s easy to just sit out on your patio or drive a few seconds to your closest beach and lay out in the sun. Instead of just going to the beach to get tan, how about going to a beach you’ll never forget? Florida is known for its pristine beaches, and some of them aren’t that far away. To help you find that perfect sun bathing destination, here are our top ten Florida beaches:
10. BLIZZARD BEACH Alright, so it’s not really a beach but it has beach in its name so it made the list on a technicality. Located in Walt Disney World, Blizzard Beach is one of two water parks (the other being Typhoon Lagoon). The park features one of the world’s largest and fastest free falling waterslides. The most relaxing area is the Polar Patio, which has a handful of secluded patio decks that come complete with lounge chairs and coolers. A few friends, a few beers and insane plunges down crazy waterslides equal a good day.
9. FT. LAUDERDALE You don’t have to travel hours away to experience a fantastic beach. Fort Lauderdale features miles of relaxing beaches with tons of stuff to do in the city. Right across from FAU’s Ft. Lauderdale campus is the Las Olas riverfront, which features tons of nightlife entertainment like Off the Hookah and Living Room nightclub. To see some more cool destinations in Ft. Lauderdale, check out the top-10 bars list.
8. DAYTONA BEACH It’s one of the only beaches you can actually drive on. Which means you can drive your car right up to the spot where you want to relax and essentially have a tailgate on the beach. However, if you just feel like going for a little drive on the coastline, the speed limit is ten miles an hour so that might take you quite a while. When you need a break from the sun, head onto the Daytona pier boardwalk where you can eat, relax and enjoy some nightlife entertainment.
7. COCOA BEACH Known as the small wave capital of the world, Cocoa Beach is a great place for experienced and new surfers alike. Home to Ron Jon Surf Shop and Cocoa Beach Surf Company, this is a beach that knows surfing. They are so serious the multi-level Ron Jon is open 24 hours every day of the week. Now that’s a town dedicated to beach life.
6. SANIBEL ISLAND Sanibel is mostly known for its seashell collecting, or shelling, as it’s known. But that’s not the only reason it’s a fantastic beach. Sanibel Beach is made up of two islands: Captiva and Sanibel. Captiva has over 20 miles of bike paths and 15 miles of white sand beaches, making it the perfect romantic hot spot. Sanibel is also known for its 50 plus types of fish to catch and multitude of birds. So if you’re really into nature, this is the place for you.

This animated comedy is a cross between Get Smart and James Bond — and it is absolutely hysterical. The dialogue is extremely witty but very adult. So mind your virgin ears because there are a lot of sexual innuendos. The show just finished its second season, so this is a perfect time for you to introduce yourself to the series. If you like Family Guy or South Park, then you will most likely love this show.
If you haven’t seen this show before, now is the time to get caught up, as it has announced this next year will be its last season. So far, the show has won 13 Emmys and four Golden Globes. So you know it must be good. The show is set in 1960s New York City following the life of Donald Draper, an ad executive at one of the city’s most prestigious ad companies. Bottom line: You get to watch him boss people around and sleep with every woman in the office. SYFY

A vampire, a ghost and a werewolf all live in a house together. That’s not the start to a bad joke, that’s the premise of the television show Being Human. It might sound lame, but it’s actually a pretty addicting show. The show wrapped up its 13-episode series premier in April and was met with overall pleasing reviews. But beware, Twilight fans, these aren’t the glittery fru-fru love-stricken vampires and werewolves you’re used to. This show can get pretty gory. That’s what makes it awesome.
Everyone who goes to college should watch Community, because it’s about college. Comedian Joel McHale plays a guy who is forced to go back to college after his law degree is discovered to be from Colombia. Not Columbia University. Funny man Chevy Chase even stars in this show, playing a kooky old guy, which is probably not too far off from how he actually is these days.
True Blood follows the story of a telepathic waitress who falls in love with a vampire. That may sound like Twilight, but this show is actually for adults, and holds high entertainment value. The show is based off a series of novels called The Southern Vampire Mysteries, and in the show’s three seasons it’s won an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Because the show is on HBO, there’s a lack of censoring. What this means for you: sexy vampires and lots of gore.
IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now working on its seventh season and shows no signs of stopping. The show follows the lives of five moderately poor bar owners who can’t seem to run their own lives properly, let alone a bar. The comedic banter is very witty, which makes it a show you can watch over and over and never get tired of it. If you want to see where the original Green Man came from, here it is.
This show does the seemingly impossible by making the viewer fall in love with and root for a serial killer. But he only kills bad guys, so that makes it okay. Right? The show takes place in Miami but is actually shot entirely in Hollywood, Calif., excluding some b-roll footage of locations. Dexter is ridiculously addictive and you’ll easily waste an entire day trying to burn through a season. But that’s what summer is for.
The Office just finished its seventh and what was presumed to be its final season. With the departure of front man Steve Carell, it seemed as though that would be it for the hit mocumentary series. But alas, the show appears to be set to return and with a new boss. People like Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, Ray Romano, James Spader and Ricky Gervais have all thrown their hats into the ring. The show is at a very exciting time and is still as funny as ever.
This show is actually filmed right here in South Florida and has had FAU students and alumni appear as extras in some episodes. On top of that, it’s an awesomely entertaining show. The show stars Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell, the guy who got his fame from The Evil Dead movies. So you know it’s gold. That’s not sarcasm. Those movies were comedic gold.
Originally a graphic novel series, The Walking Dead has made a really awesome transition into the world of television. The show chronicles the journey of a small group of survivors after a zombie apocalypse. Since apocalypse scenarios seem to be “in” right now, this is a great show to get your zombie fix.

t’s tough to keep up with some television series during the semester. We’re often forced to miss an episode due to exams or weeks of a show because of papers we have to write. But now summertime is here. We are finally free from the shackles of school life (sorry, summer schoolers). Now we can sit back, relax and catch up on our favorite shows and possibly introduce ourselves to some new ones along the way. Instead of flipping through the TV guide endlessly (do they even make those anymore?), here’s our top 10 shows to catch up on:

ummer is the best time to read because you aren’t being forced to do so for a class or a research paper. It’s just pure enjoyment. Instead of trying to give you a list of top 10 books, 10 staff members sat down and picked one book that they would highly recommend to someone. So prepare your Kindles, Nooks or whatever method you use to read books these days — here’s the UP staff ’s 10 highly recommended books:
ILLUSIONS BY RICHARD BACH Gideon Grudo, Editor-in-Chief I read this really short book at least once a year. The story follows a man who is reluctant to live his life to the fullest. It’s a helpful reminder of things I may have forgotten.
ISHMAEL BY DANIEL QUINN Mariam Aldhahi, Art Director This book looks at humanity and its wrongdoings through the main character, Ishmael. Ishmael is a gorilla who is a teacher and communicates with humans telepathically. It may sound weird, but Ishmael needs to be non human in order to be effective. Looking in on civilization from the outside gives him an opportunity to criticize humanity without hypocrisy.
BRAVE NEW WORLD BY ALDOUS HUXLEY Sergio N. Candido, News Editor Written in 1932, this book is about a futuristic society in which everything is controlled by the government and people are produced in factories/labs. Love doesn’t exist, there is only casual sex, and most literature has been destroyed. It is basically illegal to be in a bad mood or depressed, so people have to take a drug called soma. The book is a like mix between George Orwell’s 1984 and the movie Gattaca, but it’s better than both.
MONEYBALL BY MICHAEL LEWIS Ryan Cortes, Sports Editor One of the most influential sports books ever written, this book conveys how a team like the Oakland A’s, which had a bottom-barrel payroll, was able to compete with heavily financed teams like the New York Yankees by exploiting inefficiencies in the marketplace. The ideas lauded in the book were adopted from the derivatives market on Wall Street, and changed baseball forever.
ENDER’S GAME BY ORSON SCOTT CARD Alyssa Cutter, Features Editor Basically, it’s about this kid, Ender Wiggin, who is a super genius. He lives on a futuristic Earth, which is at war with a recently discovered alien race dubbed “the buggers.” Ender is recruited by Earth’s army to be its savior from almost certain destruction. He is sent to battle school, where he begins his training and fights for his life.
JANE EYRE BY CHARLOTTE BRONTE Brianna Bramm,Training Editor Although it’s an old novel, Jane Eyre is not your typical love story. There are several dark and mysterious twists in this book that will fulfill your need for mystery while you enjoy an old classic. And for a bonus, it was just made into a movie starring Mia Wasikowska from Alice in Wonderland.
VOICES FROM THE PLAIN OF JARS: LIFE UNDER AN AIR WAR BY FRED BRANFMAN Ricky Michalski,Copy Desk Chief This is a brief, easy-to-read, but shocking history of the American war in Laos during the Vietnam War. It is written from the perspective of Lao civilians, who endured years of intense bombing raids. It’s essentially a collection of drawings and essays by farmer families. It’s really awesome because it’s filled with children’s drawings, which quite innocently depict blood, gore, violence, hatred, sadness and violence in a Tim Burton/Edward Gorey sort of way.
PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS BY DR. CARL MENGER Chris Persuad,Circulation Manager Most people learn about economics as if it is some sort of mathematical model, or has some sort of vague moral foundation. Principles, on the other hand, shows — through the eyes and actions of the individual — how individuals act together to progress a society economically. Menger illustrates how value is totally subjective. Unlike past economists such as Adam Smith or Karl Marx, who believed that an object attains value based on how much labor is put into it, Menger contends that value is in the eye of the beholder. He explains how water can be worthless to many people, while jewelry can be very valuable.
SULA BY TONI MORRISON Fiji Blaize, Top 10 Designer This is the confusing tale of two best friends, a horrible secret, a questionable relationship and the things that come between them, such as men, death and society.
BATTLE ROYALE BY KOUSHUN TAKAMI Mark Gibson, Senior Reporter (top 10 guy) A class of junior-high-school students is taken to a deserted island where the students are forced to participate in a game called Battle Royale. The students are given backpacks containing random weapons ranging from a fork to an Uzi. The classmates are forced to fight each other until there is only one standing to claim victory. It’s a shocking “can’t put it down” book that will have you on the edge of your seat. Warning: not a book for the weak stomach.

TEN D RINKS TO GET YOUR SUMM ying on ER BU beach sipping ZZ tall, ice-cold drink sounds
THE TEQUILA SUNRISE
01. 02. 03. 04. 05.
MAGIC HAT WACKO
A light-bodied amber gold beer served ice-cold makes it perfect for a hot day. The beer smells like honey, but the taste combines slightly sweet malt, hops and citrus. Bottled in Brooklyn, this is a great beer for any time of the day.
THE BRUERY TRADE WINDS TRIPEL Bottled in Placentia, Calif., Trade Winds Tripel is a Belgian-style golden ale. A combo of Thai Basil and rice creates an aromatic and digestible beer made for a lazy summer evening.
This is considered a drink for the ladies, but that’s because guys won’t admit how tasty it really is. This is an awesome, delicious drink for a hot summer day.
3 oz. Peach Schnapps Combine the ingredients and pour in a glass over ice. Typically served with an orange slice and a 3 oz. Orange Juice cherry. Try adding ice and blending for a frozen treat.
When you think summer drinks, you typically think lemonade. This perfect thirst-quencher is a great place to start on making your own hard drink. Basically, add any type of alcohol you want and you’ve got yourself hard lemonade.
INGREDIENTS: Lemonade and anything your heart desires.
SEX ON THE BEACH
ALESMITH YULESMITH (SUMMER) INDIA PALE ALE
YuleSmith is a quenching, clear copper-colored hoppy double IPA. Brewed in San Diego, Calif., the beer has a citrusy aroma with a hint of vanilla. What makes this beer so good is its smooth hop taste and 22-ounce bottle.
SAM ADAMS SUMMER ALE
We’re pretty sure the origin of this drink came from someone saying, “This drink tastes so good it’s like sex on the beach.” Therefore, it’s a delicious drink to sip on the beach. There are several different versions of this drink, but below is the original.
1 oz. Peach Schnapps 1 oz. Vodka Cranberry Juice Orange Juice Pineapple Juice
Pour the vodka and schnapps into a shaker along with equal parts of orange, cranberry and pineapple juice. Shake with ice and strain into a glass over ice.
PIÑA COLADA No drink says relaxation more than a piña colada, the perfect drink for a relaxing day by the pool or the beach. If you’re not a big fan of alcohol don’t worry. The virgin piña colada is just as satisfying.
This is by far the most easily accessible summer beer. You can find it anywhere Sam Adams is usually sold. Its citrus flavor and light color make the perfect thirst quencher on a scorching summer’s day.
16 MAY 24, 2011
2 oz. Tequila 4 oz. Orange Juice ¾ oz. Grenadine
DIRECTIONS Pour tequila and orange juice into an ice-filled glass. Then, pour in grenadine slowly, allowing it to settle. Stir to complete your sunrise.
THE FUZZY NAVEL
02. 03 . 04.
BROOKLYN SUMMER ALE
This drink is both a thirst quencher and a visual masterpiece. If mixed correctly you will get the “sunrise effect,” which gives the drink its name
BEERS This beer comes from South Burlington, Vt. but what makes it unique is its beet-juice-like color. Not to worry, though, it doesn’t actually taste like beet juice. Wacko has a malty aroma, subdued hop bite and a slightly sweet finish.
the a like an awesome day of summer. Whether you like going out to beachside bars or mixing drinks yourself, picking the right drink to fit the mood is key. To help you decide, we’ve broken down this list into two categories: mixed drinks and beers. And to give you some reassurance, we’ve had all the drinks on this list to make sure they are worthy of their placement. But in case you were wondering, we didn’t drink them all at once. Before you get ahead of yourself, however, we do not condone underage drinking and we encourage all our readers to drink responsibly.

LULU’S BAIT SHACK
After a day on the Fort Lauderdale beach, LuLu’s is an awesome beachside bar to relax at. You can order a drink they serve in an actual fishbowl that is yours for the taking — if you can finish it without stumbling out, that is. LuLu’s is located along Beach Place and its second-story location makes it perfect for people-watching. And if you don’t already know, people-watching is an experience on its own.
JIMBO’S SANDBAR Jimbo’s is an awesome little bar on Hollywood Beach. What makes it so awesome is the bikini and lingerie contest that happens every Friday. Just like LuLu’s, the crowd-watching is quite the show. It’s not just the people on the beach, it’s the actual people in the bar, which makes quite the experience.
BLUE ANCHOR Located in downtown Delray Beach, the Blue Anchor comes straight from England. The entire bar was moved and shipped from London in 1988, and set up shop right here in South Florida. The bar itself is about 147 years old and said to be haunted. In 1888, two women, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes, were seen drinking with some gentleman at the bar and later found allegedly murdered by Jack the Ripper. Stride’s and Eddows’ ghosts are said to still haunt the bar. But more importantly, the bar still serves icecold beer.
FAT TUESDAY Located right down the street from Lulu’s, this is a great bar to add to the bar-hop list if you’re exploring Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Place. Not only do they have some pool tables, they’ve also incorporated one of the best ideas in a bar yet: Punching bags. There’s always at least one violent drunk, and at Fat Tuesday, instead of taking a punch from a drunken guy, put him to work on the bags. If you’re lucky, he won’t even notice the difference.
DA BIG KAHUNA
Another bar located at Beach Place, Da Big Kahuna has a wide range of nightlife entertainment. Monday and Wednesday nights are karaoke nights, Friday nights feature live rock bands and Saturday nights feature live reggae bands. As for drinking, Da Big Kahuna is known for its jungle juice drink, which is served in a large shell with a ton of rum. Jungle Juice is recommended for two people at least, but it’s sure to make a karaoke night well worth watching.
LE TUB SALOON Just look for the place with bathtubs and toilets out front and you’ve found Le Tub Saloon. This Hollywood bar and restaurant used to be a gas station. Its unique decor and location has made it an iconic South Florida hot spot. But what it’s really known for is its 14-ounce burger. The burger is so good that it was voted the best in GQ Magazine, next to Morton’s Steak House in New York. But don’t get confused. Le Tub is a shorts-and-T-shirt kind of place, and we like it that way.
MELLOW MUSHROOM This Delray Beach bar has 50 beers on tap and more than 50 bottled beers ranging from domestic to import. Try all of them and you get to be in the Beer Club, which gets you a T-shirt, hat and plaque on the bar’s wall. When you’re feeling peckish from all the beer, the Mellow Mushroom is known for its awesome customizable pizzas. Hundreds of different beers and pizzas — sounds like a good summer.
More than 90 micro-brewed beers, 30 wines, 40 teas and 40 flavors of hookah make Funky Buddha a place to come back to over and over. It’s a great place to take a group of friends who have different tastes. With so many choices in alcohol, tea and hookah, you can’t go wrong. The fact that the place micro-brews more than 90 types of beers is impressive.
WORLD OF BEER
BONGOS CUBAN CAFE
If you love beer, this your Valhalla. Never before has there been a place where you could drink around the world in one sitting. World of Beer literally has beer from around the world, including beers that you will have a hard time pronouncing even when sober. There is one located at the Promenade in Coconut Creek, and a newly opened location in West Palm Beach. If you fall in love with the place, you can get your hands on the loyalty card, which grants you one point for every different beer you try. If you reach 500 points (and yes, they have more than 500 beers), you get a T-shirt, plaque, mug and $250 party bar tab on them. It’s okay. You can wipe the tears of joy from your eyes now.
Located at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, this is one of the coolest bars in South Florida, especially at night. The entire place is set up on the roof of the building and makes for a fantastic view of the Hard Rock area. The food is really good and the drinks don’t pull any punches. The only downside is the price tag. Drinks at Bongos can get pretty expensive if you’re not careful. But when you travel to the Hard Rock, you can’t expect anything cheap.
18 MAY 24, 2011
f you’re coming from the beach or just looking to get out of the house and hang out, an awesome bar can set the right summer mood. There are hundreds of bars to choose from out there, but only a handful are actually worth your money. Sometimes the place you least expect could be the coolest bar ever. On the other hand, sometimes the coolest-looking bars are the worst. To help you find the bar that’s right for you, here are our top 10 bars worthy of a visit:

Don't worry, you will find a welcoming environment and the dress is casual, so come as you are. The teaching will be relevant to your life, the music will be rockin', and your kids will have a fun learning experience at Journey Kidz. I hope to see you THIS SUNDAY @ THE JOURNEY!
P.S. I would love to send you a FREE GIFT. Go to www.BocaJourney.com to receive a free copy of the New York Times best-seller, The Purpose- Driven Life.
