50 editions !!! FIFTY successful issues without missing one single month !!! We were not able to believe it ourselves… When we think about how we started SAMPADA and look at it now after more than 4 years, we are pretty happy with the way things have gone so far, but not satisfied… Have we been able to deliver the promises? Are we successful in achieving what we wanted to through SAMPADA? Has SAMPADA become a platform to express your thoughts and share memories about UVCE? - These are the questions which we will not answer but would love to hear from you. Your Window to UVCE, SAMPADA is always open for suggestions/ comments/ criticism, as we know there are lot of things to improve. Well, 50th edition is something very special to us.. True, but how do we make it special to our readers ?? This was the thought which has troubling all of us for a long time. We came up with few answers after brainstorming but maybe not entirely correct… Along with Campus Says, we have also introduced Alumni Says section starting this edition. Alumni can convey their thoughts about UVCE say in 4-5 lines in this column. We also have listed 50 eminent alumni, that we could search with our limited resources for this 50th edition. Soon, we will publishing the names and their profiles in our website through PARICHAYA section. Please go through the introduction to know how you can join hands with us to make it better. Apart from this, we have dedicated a page in this edition to make ANNOUNCEMENTS—One about VisionUVCE Sammilana and Creative Writing contest. Please browse through the pages to know the details. We have always believed in involvement from both Alumni and students across batches and branches is the key to success for the SAMPADA’s journey. We have heard comments about less involvement from Civil and Architecture students and alumni. We are trying hard to make sure this can be addressed and see more contributions from this group. Meanwhile, we thought it would be good to make an open announcement requesting this section to let us know what is expected to make sure that they be a part of it going forward and share their thoughts to make us understand the issue. Apart from the mail id - , we can also be reached @ Facebook group VisionUVCE else Facebook Page - SAMPADA - Team SAMAPDA

ALUMNI SAYS It has been a pleasure reading all the issues of Sampada. Sampada team efforts need to be greatly appreciated as they have been consistent and not missed any monthly issue till now which is a great delight that they have made it to 50th edition. Through Sampada the team have been able to connect Alumni, faculty and students and have been updating us about the past and present of the college and have become an integral part of the future. Sampada team is inspiring to anyone working for community initiatives. -Sridhar Gowda,1987 Mech

It's been a memorable journey of spending around 3 years and 6 months in this college of such a great legacy. Over the last 7 semesters I learnt a lot of things, both technical and non-technical. And in another 6 months, I am going to graduate from college, free to put my knowledge to use. Unfortunately, few of my classmates don't have a job offer in their hands. It will be really good if the alumni network can pull a string or two to make sure that more companies visit the campus for recruitment from the 2014 graduating batch. -Abhinav Rajmalwar 8th Sem Mech

The presence of alumni is proof of the long history of UVCE .These legendary souls long to payback all that they obtained and learned from their almamater. They've always been the fore runners of change in UVCE by giving scholarships, holding competitions, seminars etc its great to see them so devoted. My greatest wish would be wanting the alumni to take up responsibility for UVCE's renovation after all our college lack mostly in the infrastructure department. It would also be wonderful if some of our alumni members could step front and sponsor our fests. -Shilsha Adimai 4th Sem ECE

Our college lacks lot many things and i guess that one amongst them would be unity. Students get into our college not knowing what to expect, they suffer the common UVCEian's fate but they finally succumb to the pressure. I think the alumni could do a lot with regards to this to help bring all the students close to form something like a student union. Not to revolt. But to Survive! -Arun M 2nd Sem ISE

I have seen very few of our seniors coming to college after taking their degree certificates. Only a handful of them come to college on Saturdays to know what is going on in college. My main expectation is to see some of the seniors coming to college on Saturdays and help juniors with technical, academic or other issues, because nothing can help the juniors better than a good and supportive talk. The alumni can also see the issues the students are facing. It is understandable that alumni cant spend much of their time in college because of their busy schedule, but visiting their college once in while, I guess , is worth the time. The second thing I see in college is that we don't get enough help with preparation for placements. If alumni could help the students by explaining about the different aspects of placements and give them some preliminary training then it would be do great help to the students! -Swaroop E 6th Sem ISE

VU SAMMILANA VisionUVCE, as we have always claimed, was initiated to become a platform where alumni, faculty and students of UVCE can interact and work together for making UVCE a better place. After many discussions with various alumni, we have understood that there is a need to have a meetup to update the current happenings @ UVCE and also gather views from alumni as well as faculty. We believe many of the issues can be resolved, new initiatives can be taken up through conversations. So, we have decided to conduct one such gathering every year to discuss and interact with everyone who are interested in betterment of UVCE. We are hoping that through these meet-ups, VisionUVCE will be able to form a Advisory Group who will guide and support in various initiatives going forward. Senior alumni are the ones who can guide us with their experience. Overview of the Plan Date - May end, a Sunday Venue - Place close to College (will update before next edition) Time - 4 PM to 7 PM Agenda Panel Discussion with Faculty, Alumni; Interactive Fun Quiz; VisionUVCE story so far; Open House Discussion about Projects/Initiatives; Photo Sessions etc Spread the word among other UVCE Alumni and feel free to reach out to us with your thoughts/ suggestions for the event or any other initiative

I bet the name of this article caught your attention. Yes, our college’s very own theatre club Tatva took part in a street play fest which was held in Forum mall, Bangalore on 27th March 2014. The street play fest was called Manthan. Manthan is the biggest street play festival in India, and it happens in all the major cities and is . What is a street play, you ask? Street play is a form of theatrical storytelling, for a CAUSE. Manthan is a non-profit annual street play festival which aims to spread social awareness through the medium of street plays. Happening over a timeline of 1 month in various cities across the country, it featured about 50 teams performing street plays about relevant social issues at roads, markets, slums, villages, malls, schools, NGOs and monuments. When the question came to us about what theme we had to perform on, we held a meet and after a debate over various topics, we choose to do a play on women harassment. Turn on the news, or glance through the papers and you will find atleast an article about women harassment everyday. People read about it everyday, some even see it happening through the course of their day but people do nothing but just feel pity for a second or so and move on with their life. Well this made us feel that the issue of women harassment was the need of the hour which needed attention. Hence through our effort we tried to raise a question in people’s mind that “What am I doing to stop such kind of atrocities happening on women in the society?” Even though the theme is one which is of extreme seriousness, the practice sessions were always fun but at the same time, each member learnt a lot about acting from each other! On the day of fest, we were actually the first team to perform, and it was scary! The organizers came to us and said, ‘you are the first team to perform and that makes you the crowd pullers, go get some attention!’. And we were thinking, ‘the whole event depends upon how we perform!’. Anyways, we did pull it off pretty good and we had reeled in a pretty big crowd. So I guess it was a win situation for Tatva. The play went pretty well. This was the first time Tatva performed a street play. Along with our team, there were other teams also. They were amazing and covered some social issues like social networking safety, drug abuse and so on. We learnt a lot seeing them act. And it was really an inspiring and enriching experience! Our hopes for Tatva is to make sure that when other people watch us perform, they must feel awed too. And we will work for it! Shravan Kashyap, 2nd Sem Mech

ALUMNI SAYS Dear Vision UVCE, To have a though of beginning is awesome. To actually do it is fabulous. To sustain it is fantabulous... Thats what u guys are.. awesome fabulous fantabulous... wish you all the very best.. keep it on..... -Sagar Moudgal, 2008 Mech

A DAY TO REMEMBER !! In everyone's life there are some dates which can not be forgotten .e.g. our Date of Birth, Graduation Day, Date of our Marriage, Retirement etc. The latest addition to the list is the First Sunday of year 2014 - 5th January 2014- "The UCE Golden Jubilee Meet-1963&64" This date I am sure is etched in our memory as long as we live . Thanks to the wonderful efforts of Ratan Babu and his team. We, the UCE 1963 and 1964 batch mates met at Bangalore on 5th January 2014 for the G J Meet. For many of us it was a reunion after a separation of 50 long years. I do not venture to go into the details of the memorable meet but touch a point or two as to share with you how it affected our inner feelings . For us the G J Meet was like meeting our own brothers after a lapse of so many years. The affection was clearly visible . Words were few, but feeling was great . After the meet, it was time for us to bid goodbye. Did I see a tinge of sadness and eyes getting moist? I am not sure for my eyes were also filling up. But my inner feeling says ' yes' . Many of us simply raised our hands when the time came as if saying 'Well my friend, it might well be our last union, but if we are lucky we will/shall meet again' WORLD IS VERY SMALL. Surely it is a GOLDEN day to remember . Praying for blessings of LORD SRI KRISHNA OF UDUPI to all our Alumni Brethren and for World peace. - Mr B Krishna Moorthy Rao, is from 'BAPPANADU' now called Moolky of Dakshina Kannada. After his graduation from UCE Bangalore in 1963 in Electrical Engineering joined State Electricity Board and retired as Superintending Engineer (El) in the year 1998. 7

UVCE has numerous pearls, gemstones and other jewels sparkling within its Treasure Chest !!! Yes, you guessed it correct, we are talking about the UVCE Alumni who have made their Alma mater proud and held its flag high in their respective fields. We, Team SAMPADA, wanted to make our 50th edition memorable by naming few of them to begin with. We want to trigger a snow-ball effect, starting this edition. What we have done is, named 50 eminent personalities from various fields who have made UVCEians feel proud. We want your support and help to make it 5000 !!! True, there are people more than that number whom we have to recognize and make sure the current students know about them, their achievements and be inspired from them. The list below is very small due to our limited knowledge and details available. It is not meant to lower anyone else’s achievements. As told earlier, this just the tip of the ice-berg that we could identify, but lot remains beneath the unknown water. We will be documenting their profiles in our website, so that we get a brief introduction of our Alumni, their contribution to the society and their achievements in PARICHAYA section. Please help us by sending names and details of the alumni who can be featured in PARICHAYA Name Dr. Prahlada Dr S N Omkar Dr Surya Raghu Ashwin Rangan Dr. M R Srinivasan Navin Hegde Dr. S S Iyengar Ashok Kumar Manali Ramesh Aravind Dr Vasudev K Aatre Mano Murthy Prof Roddam Narasimha Sunil Abraham Pavitra Ratnakar Vaidyanathan BV Jagadish Kumar Naik Shatavadhani Ganesh VijayBhaskar Sudheendra Haldodderi K C Reddy R Natarajan Prof S RameGowda Wg Cmdr H G Dattatreya Prof B T Lakshman

ALUMNI SAYS First of all whole 'SAMPADA' team deserves a great appreciation for all the effort that's been put into this. I know the kind of effort required in getting a magazine out (Understood that during 'VINYASA' magazine time!). Hats off to you guys for the determination, dedication and the energy towards this 'SAMPADA' magazine for these many editions so far. Its been almost 7 years that i graduated from UVCE, but still i feel like i am connected with UVCE's day to day happenings. Its all because 'SAMPADA', thank you guys. Whole hearted congratulations to all of you for the 'SAMPADA50'-an incredible journey and way to go! -Honnappa,2007 ECE

SAE is the Society of Automotive Engineers which is a World Wide organization who set standards and validate automotive projects. A student branch of this organization exists in our college called as SAEINDIA UVCE. The motto of SAEINDIA stands as The Engineering Society for Advancing Mobility in Land Sea Air and Space. The student branch of SAE , SAEINDIA UVCE was set up in 2011 due to the earnest efforts of a group of seniors of Batch 2009-2013 from Mechanical consisting of Deepak B Nagaraj , Ajay Devadi, Arjun Premachandran, Chandan Raghukumar, Nikhil H N and went through all the permission process from HOD, Principal and BU required for setting up the club. The present Execom launched the club with a new identity, an office was allotted, and with help of Dr. P Deepa Shenoy Ma’am established themselves in the college. A computer for the students’ work was allotted and the present Execom members painted the office, set up everything and redesigned the room for an efficient working environment. All this preparation actually boosted the club’s activities. SUPRA is a racing competition that is annually conducted By SAEINDIA where a racing car has to be built from scratch. This event provides a real world engineering challenge for the SAEINDIA Student members. The participating teams are required to prepare for everything from virtual design and engineering to production to marketing and endurance. SAEINDIA UVCE also is in the process of taking part in it, although the progress is little bit slow due to lack of funds. National Go-Karting competition is another competition where a Go-Kart has to be built from scratch as well. The competition will consist of several tests and tasks to be performed by the vehicle. SAEINDIA UVCE also has zealous plans of taking part in it and has already started work with respect to it. A Team of 25 SAEINDIA UVCE members has been formed through a selection process consisting of various rounds like a written test, interview and so on. The virtual design for competition has been prepared by the team and the rest of the preparation is under progress. The club also has conducted various seminars and workshop for improving the skill sets of the team members. The club till date has involved in conducting many activities to benefit the members for improving their skills in the technical field. A field trip was organized to HAL Aerospace Museum and also to Auto Expo 2013. Numerous seminars and workshops on various topics related to aerospace and automobile like engines, go-karts, suspensions was conducted. The membership for SAEINDIA UVCE club starts from April and the membership is annual. Members are from various branches although majority hail from mechanical. The current year member count of the club is 75. The Execom has made several plans for the academic semester for the benefit of the members. Some of the plans devised are : The club intends to conduct an automobile fest in the college ; Active participation of the team in the National Go-kart competition; Aim to provide the members with exposure to industrial knowledge and hands-on experience by conducting field trips and workshops; To develop skill sets in the various fields required for such competitions in the members; They want to give interactive tests, mock interviews, seminars, workshops for improving placement skills; Also there are plans to collaborate with IEEE UVCE and other student organizations in specific fields like robotics; To start intra clubs and improvise the existing clubs like automodelling, CAD, innovation. Starting a website is also part of the schemes. Team Sampada would like to Congratulate the present Execom on their efforts of establishing the club SAEINDIA UVCE and wish all success. Also a here’s a special request to all the interested Alumni from Team Sampada to come forward and help the club in various like seminars, internships, sponsorships or funds. You can contact the club - or FB group SAEINDIA-UVCE 10
