elcome Our landscapes mirror a way of life. Ebb and flow. Growth and plateau. Upper Bucks County’s rich backdrop attracted English and German settlers hundreds of years ago because of the landscape. Colonial Americans looking for new beginnings discovered fertile soils, timbered forests, clean waterways and diverse wildlife — rich for food. Roughly 400 years later, not much has changed. Upper Bucks remains a place where those hungry for rural landscapes and friendly small town centers continue to settle, travel, and discover a slower, enriched way of living. Here is rural charm.

While we began as an outpost for English, German and Swiss immigrants, our populations are changing. Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic or Hindi may be heard while youngsters and their parents learn English as a second language. Our housing and cost of living remains reasonable and continues to attract 21st century settlers to make a place and call it home. Striking a balance between agricultural and steadfast family farming traditions means municipal stewardship is more vital than ever before. Our local governments are committed to protect and preserve our landscape. Farmland and open spaces balance growth and development to ensure our prosperity. Yesterday’s manufacturing centers were silks and textiles. Organs and cigars drove industry and provided jobs. Today’s pro-economic development policies drive high tech and advanced manufacturing centers. Manufacturing goes global here, providing good jobs, careers and opens the economic landscape for robust growth. From small craft shops to international companies, Upper Bucks County employs a skilled local workforce to meet the needs of the region and beyond.

Fresh
FROM OUR GARDEN TO OUR KITCHEN
The newest addition to this Quakertown eatery mainstay isn’t additional seating or another signature, micro-brewed beer on tap — it’s a garden. With seasonal fare outside the chef’s door, the new garden, grown from local land two doors down, provides the freshest, most natural ingredients. Handpicked, dew-kissed cucumbers become the pickles served with stacked sandwiches. Fresh mint is the perfect complement to a mojito and only the ripest tomatoes make for the tastiest pico de gallo. Picked-at-their-peak zucchini and fresh herbs aplenty, McCoole’s at the Historic Red Lion Inn is embracing farm-to-table cuisine. At McCoole’s, the staffs’ professional savvy exemplifies a welcome extension of home grown for the table. “I was in the restaurant business for 12 years, wearing many hats and I’m always grateful to a server who knows the menu, knows the beers and gives helpful suggestions,” said a recent patron. Built on an enduring landscape, McCoole’s is woven as much into the fiber of downtown Quakertown as its sturdy, dependable and grounded location is a testament to endurance and longevity standing tall and firm on the corner of Broad and Main streets. Owner Jan Hench balances McCoole’s rich, historic past with constantly evolving customer preferences. “McCoole’s is literally built on Quakertown’s landscape,” Hench says. From its stone foundation and Revolutionary War roots to the current farm-to-table movement where chefs know how seasonal ingredients enliven the best dishes, McCoole’s passion to serve great food integrates with a respect for its patrons, past pivotal role in the community and sense of history, and the area’s future and vitality.
Rooted in the community, McCoole’s serves lunch and dinner — in a bar setting, casual seating area, main dining room or patio seating on warm days — plus offers tasting events and beer festivals, all in an inviting atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy. McCoole’s Arts and Events Place, just a few paces from the restaurant, provides a rotating arts and entertainment schedule in a gathering spot unlike any other, with an ample patio for outside dining, mingling and live music. From annual meetings to business networking, workshops, private and corporate parties, intimate concerts, musicals and live plays, the space may be reserved. Still, it’s family and friends, great food, history-filled and amiable surroundings that remain key ingredients to an enjoyable evening out. So when a couple passing through Quakertown recently stopped at McCoole’s, they weren’t disappointed. Prompt, friendly service, piping hot crab and seafood pasta dishes and live music drifting from the piano made a lingering impression on them, “Needless to say, you surpassed our expectations. We look forward to visiting again.” From the garden next door to the friendly, knowledgeable staff to the historical property McCoole’s personifies the evolving, natural landscape of new and old for which Upper Bucks is renowned.

Enjoy corn mazes, festivals and events meant to showcase our region’s harvest and abundance, while attracting visitors to linger outdoors and enjoy cooler weather. Maybe it was a first date at a park, paddling a canoe, blazing a woodland trail, an ambling horseback ride or sunny afternoon of breezy lake sailing. Whatever brought you to Upper Bucks County, you decided then and there you’d come back soon, or never want to leave us. For those who crave the great outdoors, there are ways to satisfy water wanderlust. Stand in a sparkling stream, snug inside waders while you tempt bass with colorful flies and the repetition of cast and flick over the water’s shimmery surface. Quietly paddle along our lake’s shorelines while spotting young panfish dart and quiver below the surface or marvel at “jelly balls,” a unique moss animal collective of algae and bacteria, and hallmark of high quality waterways. Saddle up and take to the trails astride horseback as a hawk rides wind currents above, or listen to rustling hemlocks dotted with woodpeckers, scarlet tanagers, and killdeer. Local parks offer tot lots, trails and a way to run off summer hijinks for young, while benches beckon those who like to take walks and rest in turns. Ball games – from friendly pick-up games to youth ball and the home of the Quakertown Blazers, offers a grassroots take on America’s pastime. Whether it’s one of many local community day events, a rural country bike ride or an old-fashioned movie in the park screening, don’t forget live music to suit any genre or taste is available with concerts in our parks. Kids, cotton candy and carnivals are a threesome summertime invitational. Look for fire company carnivals, which entertain and delight while

Food Taste the high noon August sunshine in a Big Boy tomato. The garden at the base of amber ale, foam sliding down the glass, plateau breeze and rows of grapes in a local Riesling or the field in a shot of Pennsylvania rye whiskey. Join us soon, and create your own sense memories. Whether eating in or out, few places have the wealth and abundance of locally grown ingredients fresh from the garden or farmer’s hands as Upper Bucks County does. Think fragrant creamy cantaloupes. Rainbow Swiss chard, still wet from a passing rain. Cipollini onions, mild and thin skinned. Salad greens and goat cheese. A sun ripened heirloom tomato pulled warm from the garden. Sliced thick and drizzled with olive oil, you might sandwich it with fresh mozzarella and thin strips of basil, before topping it all off with a drizzle of Modena vinegar. Crusty bread that rustles when you roll it between thumb and fingers. From fast to fine you don’t need to travel far for a great meal, or the ingredients to build your own. Produce, eggs, beef and pork, poultry, cheese as well as breakfast shops, cafés and restaurants serve up delectable plates from the field to the table. Whether you’re picking an aged Delmonico from the local butcher or farmers’ market to grill over cherry wood pieces and charcoal or ordering a steak, ribs or mounded, hand-pressed burger from your favorite go-to eatery, we’ve got just about anything you could want. Here breakfast, lunch or dinner is served. Inside or on porches, patios or street side for the casual chic ambiance you’ll only find when dining al fresco.

Friendly servers who know their stuff makes asking questions easy. And don’t think twice about asking about food and beer or wine pairings, in fact some area restaurants offer special meals and bring in the pros to help decipher complimentary quaffs with various plate options. Locally brewed beers are on several restaurant taps, often poured by the hands that craft them. For those with a thirst for boutique spirits, we’re fertile ground for the increasingly popular small batch spirits revival, from clear to amber and in between.

For more than 100 years, the siren call of Upper Bucks County has attracted – and retained – artists, writers, musicians and theater folk alike because its landscapes kindle, nourish and sustain the creative spirit. For those who find inspiration to be a visual feast: hills, valleys, fields, forests and streams are food for thought, as well as fodder for the artist’s brush and palette, sculptor’s skilled hands and writer’s elusive muse. From covered bridges to snow scenes, local landmarks and pastoral lifestyles, our cover Impressionist Artist Jim Lukens, embodies the richness of being born, bred – leaving for an education – and returning to Upper Bucks to be inspired, create and pursue a maestro’s passionate life. Our lush growing conditions – just the right amount of sun, great soils, rain and a healthy water table (Quakertown is The Great Swamp, after all) make for a gardener’s paradise. From home gardens and local garden centers growing seed starts from scratch, perennials, shrubs, roses, dahlias and more to high season garden tours, where residents and visitors alike can browse the good work wrought by a friend or neighbor’s hands. For the artist, or art enthusiast, there’s no lack of still life to embrace or admire here, either rendered in oils on canvas or through the photographer’s able lens. And if music is your art form, concerts feature everything from Indie Folk to local musicians just starting out and performing for free at festivals, farmers’ markets, cafés and restaurants. We attract

Maybe it was the first time you spotted a town name on a map or took a convertible drive along single lane, winding country roads flanked by new spring green or ruddy and burnished autumn bronze. Look, there’s a rugged stone barn. A Great Blue Heron gliding overhead, she’s held in soundless suspension. You declared you’d come back when you had more time, as you cruised on the way to somewhere else. Upper Bucks County’s landscape is punctuated with centuries old bank barns. Durham Furnace was a real furnace! The history stretches back to the late 1600s and William Penn. The original furnace forge was founded in 1727.
There’s no time like now. If history repeats itself, it’s through a fresh lens. Sun dappled, newly painted storefronts, streets and sidewalk containers brimming with vinca, trailing petunias and begonias, our historic downtowns are chic once more. Walking tours and historic places offer a window into local lore, as do enthusiastic volunteers keen on sharing our stories. As new generations discover the siren allure of Main Street, small independently owned shops offer daily staples, gifts and antiques. Our delightful downtowns remain rooted and steeped in time, all-the while translating themselves across the centuries. During the Revolutionary War, the Liberty Bell was spirited away from Philadelphia to avoid being melted down and used by British troops as ammo. The bell spent one night on its safekeeping journey to Allentown snug inside Liberty Hall, on Broad Street in Quakertown. The 1988 “Great Fire” of Perkasie was the catastrophic result of youngsters playing with matches. The fire razed nearly two blocks in the historic downtown. While the blaze destroyed historic properties, it did not dampen the fierce spirit embodied by the community to emerge from the ashes and write the next chapter. Despite flood waters and erosion the Delaware Canal and towpath snakes along the eastern banks of Upper Bucks County providing active recreation and historic river towns. Stretching from Easton to Bristol the canal and path served as a vital route for commerce and trade. There’s something about river towns – an ease of commerce between

We’re hard to pin down because our complexion is ever changing. While rooted in the agricultural heritage of Quaker and German settlers, Upper Bucks County has been a longstanding haven for newcomers. Our cultural diversity stretches back to those European settlers – you can see evidence from Quaker Meeting Houses to covered bridges and gabled Dutch barns. Those same English, German and Dutch colonists brought recipes, farming, worship, customs, a tireless work ethic and much loved traditions from their homeland. Today our diversity continues to expand with Spanish and Hindi speaking people, empanadas, textiles and craft spirits, further adding a colorful dimension to neighborhoods, downtown shops and street corners. So what defines culture? Food, festivals, music, dance, spoken word, tangible artifacts, art and theater? Or is it the people who settle a place, provide stewardship for the next generation and add their values, purpose, voices, song and spirit to the patchwork? Visit us, stay awhile, then you decide.

haping Progresswith Purpose
UBCC Is Your Seat at the Table
Here at the Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce, we greet the new year with profound optimism. Longterm goals are being realized, and major initiatives are bearing fruit. Progress rarely happens by accident, and more often than not, it takes the passionate efforts of numerous stakeholders working in common purpose. That’s why we’re always there at the table. Your Chamber in action is a driving force in regional tourism, skilled workforce development, optimizing traffic and infrastructure, and shaping public policy, large and small. Much of the hard work and close collaboration happens behind-the-scenes, with only occasional public spectacles testifying to broader achievement. Record-smashing crowds at our annual membership gatherings with county, state and federal legislators are just the tip of a much larger iceberg of committee work, interest, engagement and enthusiasm for an active role in shaping public policy. Earning major county and state grants, likewise, is only a moment on the longer arc of historical stewardship, service to tourism, economic development, relationship building and patience in pursuit of broader visions. Traffic flow doesn’t optimize itself, and education doesn’t magically align with the needs of today’s employers, let alone tomorrow’s. And without a vision, the composition of tomorrow’s regional economy
might be left entirely to chance. Fundamental issues of family-sustaining wages and our very quality of life and community are at stake. Few would argue that our local drive times are longer and congestion on our roads has gotten worse over the years. Such outcomes need not necessarily be a byproduct of ‘progress,’ and those with key roles in outcomes are back at the table with significant lessons learned. Our Chamber’s Transportation Committee is working hard to leverage what will be a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to optimize traffic flow by pro-actively embracing the challenges and opportunities presented by several major developments on the horizon. Municipal leaders and planners, transportation experts from county and state, federal legislative staff, along with engineers representing numerous projects, have been busy getting on the same page, literally. With three large healthcare complexes, a significant school district project, combined with a boom in commercial and residential developments, all to be located on or near our region’s main arteries, plans in discussion could actually make traffic better than it is today. Working together, we’re coordinating site planning and best practices designed to make conditions on our shared roads better tomorrow and well into the future. What makes our region a transportation hub, prime regional and interstate access routes also makes Upper Bucks a prime location for manufacturing.

And in many cases, the qualifications for these positions do not require a four-year college degree. The ratio of workers per square foot in a logisticsversus-manufacturing setting is another data point that lends to manufacturing as a best-use in new commercial land development, given the choice — it underscores why we’ve embarked on a long-term, multi-pronged effort to embrace, promote the value of, and serve the evolving skilled workforce needs of our region’s diverse manufacturers. At this stage in our growth, who better than manufacturers to recruit the peers they do business with to this wonderful place we call home. We’re ahead of the curve in a labor market that’s tightening. For modern manufacturing and skilled trades, there are recruiting challenges in nearly every community in our nation. With the coordinated steps we’ve already taken, combined with our longrange planning, our region’s skilled workforce is even stronger. Reinforcing these efforts is a growing awareness of a staggering $1.4 trillion collective college debt load, where less than half of recent college graduates are sufficiently compensated to pay down debt. In this light, skilled trades are increasingly
www.ubcc.org
As we combine that with forward-thinking skilled workforce initiatives, tailoring hands-on training and curriculum to our employers’ emerging needs, our region is poised to attract even more modern manufacturers to our strong economic base. The difference is significant in terms of the types of jobs created, the quality of lives sustained, and the scale of broader economic ripples to our mutually dependent business community. The difference in hours and wages is substantial. Based on an analysis produced by the Quakertown Area Planning Commission (QAPC), employment and livelihood is foundational to a broader shared vision for attracting and sustaining manufacturing and skilled trade enterprises. A quick glimpse of QAPC figures on average earnings comparisons makes it obvious why regional stakeholders are galvanized towards action. Local manufacturing workers average nearly two and a half times the hourly wage of fulfillment workers around the region. They also typically have close to double the number of hours available to work in a given week. The statistics on wages and hours worked are painted with a broad brush, but they actually become more compelling in detailed data for Upper Bucks run by our partners at the Bucks County Workforce Development Board, Inc. (BCWDB). The more

attractive to parents, counselors and our youth as they embark on the next chapter of their own American Dream, with open eyes and open minds. We are proud and privileged to have the composite of critical partners who feel likewise, including most importantly leading local manufacturers and all public education institutions serving the needs of Upper Bucks County. Together, we have forged and driven the Upper Bucks Skilled Workforce Initiative to shine a light on lucrative and rewarding careers here in our back yard. Hard and soft skills align to meet current and emerging needs of local employers. To better serve our roughly 300 local manufacturers, the Upper Bucks County Technical School (UBCTS) successfully launched their Mechatronics Lab and hands-on coursework, embraced by youth to capacity and now available for adult learners. In response to the UBCC Workforce Needs Survey completed by our manufacturing and skilled trades employers, the Bucks County Community College (BCCC) is on pace to launch a locally tailored version of a successful pilot program started in Lower Bucks. It includes hard and soft skills preparation and screening, resulting in better job placement. This is no small feat, and offers tremendous opportunity for the next generation, as well as those seeking career transition to higher wages. Our region’s manufacturers are engaged in every step of the process, sharing confidence about their prospects to recruit and retain locally grown talent into the near future. Your Chamber is proud to share praise for so many dedicated individuals and institutions working to make sure tomorrow is even better.

Formed from municipal “scraps” and established in 1763, Haycock Township boasts some of the most spectacular landscape and recreational resources anywhere in Bucks County. From Lake Towhee to Haycock Mountain, along with a substantial portion of Lake Nockamixon, Haycock Township offers campgrounds, day trip excursions, horseback riding at Haycock Stables, as well as water activities like boating and fishing. Visitors enjoy walking, hiking and biking here, too.
Like so much of “Penn’s Sylvania” or Penn’s Woods, Hilltown Township dates to the late 1600s as a settlement — known as “Perkasie Indian Town”. Settlers arrived in the 1700s. Farming was the township’s bread and butter trade through World War II. Now, a largely residential community, it is home to the Pearl S. Buck International homestead, Green Hills Farm. A National Register of Historic Places site, the 60-acre property was home to Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Pearl S. Buck, author of “The Good Earth” and child sponsor and adoption advocate for Asian and Amerasian children.
Known for land preservation, rural vistas, roadside farm stands and an extensive park system, Milford Township is home to many historical mills. Take a country drive and stop for lunch or dinner at one of several eateries — The Brick Tavern Inn, offering an extensive outdoor dining patio and seasonal live music, Spinnerstown Hotel Restaurant and Taproom and the Jamison Publick House in Geryville. Once the starting point of the famous colonial era uprising with the Fries Rebellion, it now hosts a plethora of manufacturers and a public general aviation airport — Quakertown Airport.

The 5,286 acre state park and lake are actually located in Bedminster and Haycock townships. Nockamixon Township includes the villages of Ferndale, Harrow, Revere and Kintnersville, a portion of which lies in Durham Township. Notable for gorgeous country roads, landscape, and scenery, its waterways drain into the Delaware River. Consider the Ferndale Inn for fine casual country dining when visiting.
Situated in the heart of the Pennridge School District, Perkasie Borough continues to evolve and reinvent itself. From a walkable, thriving downtown business district to a seasonal weekly outdoor farmers market bringing patrons an array of produce, meats, wine, honey and owner made goods to an extensive park system complete with a community pool and historic carousel, Perkasie residents and visitors enjoy a small town atmosphere with forward thinking governance. Tucked into a northern corner of Upper Bucks County, Riegelsville Borough is a Delaware River town. Riegelsville was an important stop for commerce during the Industrial Revolution where boats carried such cash commodities as coal, stone, iron and farming crops from Easton to Bristol. For history and architecture buffs, Riegelsville is home to some great examples of period homes. “Mansions Row,” built by 19th century captains of paper mill commerce, and the Riegelsville Inn, an historic purveyor of food and lodging since 1838, are points of interest worth visiting.
Sellersville’s Main Street traces roots back to an ancient Lenni Lenape trail, a colonial era stagecoach line and early Post Road. The Washington House Hotel and Restaurant, along with the Sellersville Theater 1894, have storied pasts that bring charm to fine dining, luxury accommodations, and live entertainment. Sellersville is also home to Bucks County’s first hospital, established in 1913, Grand View Health. Enjoy exhibits at the Sellersville Museum, community events like the Gallery of the Arts Festival, weekly bingo at the Fire Hall, or a stroll in any season through Lake Lenape Park.
Riegelsville prospered when the Delaware Canal opened in 1832, warehouses & factories filled its banks. After 99 years of service, the canal closed in 1931 and was replaced by the railroads. 34

Bordered by Lehigh County, many residents may have Coopersburg or Hellertown mailing addresses, while others in the township will have a Quakertown mailing address. Rolling pastoral hills and country roads make Springfield Township and such National Register of Historic Places sites as the Jacob Funk House and Barn, Knecht’s Covered Bridge, Springhouse Farm and the Springtown Historic District, notable landmarks.
Located along the Delaware River, Tinicum Township is quintessentially Upper Bucks. Preserved open space abounds, and the National Register of Historic Places takes note of such local treasures as the Red Hill Church and School, the Ridge Valley Rural Historic District, the Stover Mill and the Lewis Summers Farm. Outdoor recreation abounds by Delaware Canal and Ralph Stover State Parks, along with local gems, The Giving Pond Recreation Area and the 126 acre Tinicum Park, which is home to numerous community events including the annual Tinicum Arts Festival.
Whether it was known as Paletown, Portland or Lawndale, Silverdale Borough is a small borough known for its civic pride and commitment to residents. From its parks and recreation facilities to nearby attractions such as Lake Nockamixon and Lake Galena. It’s home to Bolton Farm Market, where they raise chicken, beef and turkey, and sell fresh milk in glass bottles. Silverdale offers visitors and residents small town charm and appeal.

Surrounded by Milford Township, Trumbauersville Borough is primarily residential and part of the Quakertown Community School District. Just under 1,000 residents, it celebrated its centennial in 2008. It offers small town appeal against a rural landscape. The Trum Tavern dates back to 1752, then known as the Spread Eagle Hotel and was once owned by Jacob Fries, brother to John Fries of the Fries Rebellion — one of the first grassroots protests against unfair federal taxation. Today you can stop by the family owned, Spor’s General Store, and fill up a growler of stout!
Scenic landscape, stony rock outcroppings, farms and woodlands make West Rockhill Township a picturesque municipality in Upper Bucks County and provide opportunities for quiet or active recreation. Ridge Road (Rte 563) divides West Rockhill in contour and land use; the north being dominated by rural, rocky land and the south by industry and farms. Its scenic and bucolic landscape and convenient access to major highways and amenities, are some of the many reasons residents and businesses such as North American Drager, Teva and Fresco, choose to call West Rockhill Township their home.
Springfield Township was William Penn’s gift to his first wife, Gulielma Maria Springett Penn. It was first designated on a map in 1681. The date is prominently displayed on the Township Seal.
