The year has ended and a new one with tremendous adjustments - is about to start. And all I can say right now is that it has been a genuinely good year for UP Kustura. Our first Mari-K-zone issue was a success as well as all other new events and projects. Truly, being “renewed” has its definite perks. But more than the initial glamour and glory of novelty, UP Kustura has achieved something else: a legacy. A legacy of service and excellence for the years to come without forgetting how to look behind and stay on the ground. To the Mari-K-Zone team as well as all its readers, it had been an awesome year. I know and believe that from now on it will always be.

Bigger and better!

Grazielle Chua

This letter is long overdue, just like all of the few output I have made for this magazine. (Hehe sorry Kuya Jonna!) It’s hard being part of this team, whether it be a big one like the last or one with the chosen few, but I am proud of all the people who contributed to make both issues possible. To the writers, who we constantly bugged to submit on time, thank you for accepting the task, even if it might have been halfheartedly (hehe). To our sources, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, however crazy they may get. To Charnina, who’s constantly there day and night to edit articles. To Kuya Jonna, who’s responsible for almost everything you’ll see in the magazine, sobrang awesome mo! And to our former Chairperson, Loisa, who without her dream, this project would not be what it is today. Congratulations, Kustura! Thank you for an awesome year, and I look forward to awesomer years ahead! ♥

e h T s u o i c e r P sils s o F a r u t s u K of

As the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Same goes for UP Kustura. The organization traces its roots to July 2001, when a group of UP students wanted to start an organization for NCR residents. The willing ones, however, were all Marikeños. They then decided to start a Marikeño students’ org, aptly named UP Kustura as homage to Marikina’s shoe-making industry. Since then, UP Kustura has served as a home for more than a hundred members. From its humble beginnings, it flourished into the organization we all know and love today. Gone were the days when Constitutions were conceived at the CASAA steps and GAs were attended by around 5 people. Revisiting the past is always a good way to reconnect to our roots. Getting to know the people behind the formation of the org and the people who worked hard to bring us to where we are today is a way to strengthen the bond of everyone who is part of UP Kustura: alumni, members and applicants. However, finding time to bond out with alumni wasn’t easy with their busy schedules. A lot of us have heard about some of them, especially from the older members, but we don’t really get to see them. Fret not, for we’ve brought them closer to you! These are some of the people who gave birth to Kustura, brought forth a legacy, and definitely left a mark in the organization’s history. Check out this mini-interview with our beloved alumni, read on for their Kustura stories, witty answers and wonderful advice! words by: Loisa Amat

All your kuyas and ates are just so thankful to all of you for continuing what we have started. Though we of course believe in the sincere vision of Kustura, we really never imagined that it would even grow this big. You might have heard of our org’s very humble beginnings, and looking at all of you now only makes us prouder to be part of it. Salamat talaga nang marami sa inyo!

“ KUSTURA TAUGHT ME TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE. ”

How did Kustura help you in becoming who you are today?

Kustura taught me to be more responsible. It showed a preview of the real world. It was like work. We managed events, organized fundraising activities, did budgeting, etc. I’ve realized that making money is really hard. I also learned teamwork, how to interact with different kinds of people to reach one goal. Do you have any unforgettable Kustura moments? If yes, kwento please! ♥

What do you miss the most about being a student?

I miss the simplicity of student life. Ages ago (LOL), my aspirations were a little bit more straightforward and easier to achieve, say, get good grades every semester, graduate on time, build lasting friendships, be part of cool orgs, among others. Everything seemed to be predictable and a breeze to handle. After leaving UP and immersing myself in the “real world”, I realized that there’s so much more to all the learning and experiences gained in school. Suddenly, it’s a whole different story with the inevitable surge of tasks to accomplish, roles to fulfill, expectations to meet, goals to attain and even lessons to learn. Life has become, well, more complex. It’s not necessarily a bad thing though because, for me, such complexity actually makes my existence more exciting. But when things get too overwhelming, I sometimes pause and long to time-travel back to my student days. :) What do you miss the most about being a Kustura member?

Since I joined Kustura in its founding year, I surely miss working with a great bunch of people who had the collective vision to build an organization that Marikeños in UP can proudly call their own. I miss all the brainstorming, planning, exhausting of creative juices to come up with programs and activities that would make a

Imperfect and yet blissful hahaha ♥ With my husband, every day is a thrilling journey to forever. (Cheeeeeeeesy!!! :D) How did Kustura help you in becoming who you are today?

Kustura served as one of my training grounds in terms of handling an organization, creating policies, managing projects, producing events, establishing and maintaining contacts, among others. These key skills prove to be very significant in my current career and my life in general. Of course, Kustura also gave me the opportunity to get to know

Oh, I have tons and here are a few of those unforgettable moments. :) Meetings at Main Lib Steps, Riverbanks or Sports Center when we did not have tambayan yet; 1st ever Listo at Roosevelt College; Another Listo at Youth Camp wherein we gave huge basketball trophies to the winners LOL; Listo at Marikina City Hall; The “impeachment” case (very private and sensitive matter harhar); Hosting stint at DZUP (Kustura radio show, Wednesdays, 3PM); Bonchalet bonding and it took forever for the food to be served; Overnight planning somewhere

in Marikina; Kustura Concert and the “orcs” from Marikina per Samantha Echavez haha (sorry for name-dropping haha); Rummage Sales; ACLE with Willie Nepomuceno; Bonding at Mang Jimmy’s; UP Fair wherein we sold soft-serve ice cream and grilled corn; UP Fair wherein one of the founding fathers, Reagan Austria, became Superman because we unintentionally left all the things for him to take home...yep we didn’t really mean it and we’re already forgiven haha; Pictorial at Sam’s place and the Kustura Exhibit, bold star ang peg ko haha; AND MANY MORE! :) Advice for graduating members

It’s amazing how the org has grown over the years and I am looking forward to seeing it grow further, soaring to even greater heights. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of you, dear members and fellow Marikeños, for taking care of the org…for keeping the Kustura spirit alive! ♥

memorable is when there was an attempt to impeach me as Finance Committee chair as I was not able to bring in much needed funds to sustain the org. Too many to mention! I think my batchmates would be more than happy to relive it. Advice for graduating members

Have faith in yourself and embrace the adventures, good or bad. Rejection is a good thing! Things (most of the time) work out in the end.

Live college life to the hilt! Live college life to the hilt. You will miss it. Oh you will miss it. Pero life after college is another adventure altogether. Super life changing. Expect travels, adventures, unexpected friendships, decisions and moments that will map out your future ♥

What do you miss the most about being a student?

Freedom! Free time! Tambay hours! Shirt, shorts, tsinelas for the win! Sorry ang dami pala ng namiss ko. What do you miss the most about being a Kustura member?

Tambay hours na kwentuhan about anything under the sun. Hahaha

If you can be a superhero for a day, what superpowers would you want to have? What will be your superhero name?

I miss not needing to wake up early because my class starts at 11:30 am. I miss walking from the Shuster Street to AS, (naabutan ko rin naman yung sa may CHE ok!) I miss the fishballs, fruitshakes, karioka, taho and the giant ice cream! I miss free money! I realized that as students, we are very fortunate to have our own money without working hard for it! :) I miss the monthly GAs when all we do is to catch up with each other’s acad-related stories. #NERD Naah, what I miss most is the bonding activities that continue to strengthen our friendships. ♥

It helped me define what I really want to become and the stuff I want to do, 20, 30 years from now. One time, we played pokemon using pencil, paper and a whole lot of imagination. Advice for graduating members

During the first few months of graduation, you’re going to miss everything about college terribly. From the quizzes and exams you’ve always hated taking, to the smelly terminal in Tumana. When the urge to quit and just come back to that comfortable place hits you, shake it off. It sounds cruel and heartless, but you need to move on from all those things. And I know that I don’t have the ascendancy to say this, because to be honest, I haven’t really moved on from the amazing college experience that Kustura gave me. But really, the best way to reach your

dreams is to move on and accept change. One of the things that I learned while working is that everything changes, including yourself. If you don’t want to change, then you will be changed, because that’s just how it goes. And it will be more painful and difficult. #SoMuchFeels Advice for members who aren’t graduating yet

‘Wag kayong magmadaling gumraduate. I hear a lot of you kids (#tandavibes) talking about how excited you are to graduate, and how you wish all of this (i.e. college) was over. MEMBERS. To the people you will invite to apply in our org, please instill in them the mindset that we are not here just to make new friends or to preserve already existing friendships. Let’s aim for something greater than that. I believe that one day, UP Kustura will be so monumental in transforming this nation. And when that day comes, we will not care for the glory and fame. Because in the end, we are just doing what we love. And no amount of acknowledgement can displace the joy we will experience when we live to witness the Philippines become great (again). But members, it starts with you. Please don’t lose hope for the Philippines. Please fight for the next generation. Please make UP Kustura an avenue to remind everyone that better days are ahead. AND PLEASE, wag na kayo magreklamo. Kumilos nalang tayo. Lokohan ba ‘to?!

If you do not have the compassion to speak the truth lovingly and directly, then you have no right to complain. FINALLY, please stop pursuing things that don’t matter. Stop being successful in doing things that don’t matter. Don’t waste your time and effort doing things that don’t matter. PLEASE LANG. :) I love you, kids! <3 Thank you for taking care of UP Kustura. “ BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF. THE WORLD NEEDS YOU. ”

T S A L APPS’ ORIENTATION 1314B IS A B we all know, a new semester brings a fresh start not just for all Isko’s and Iska’s but also for UP organizations as they welcome another batch of potential members for this school year – and UP Kustura is one of those. Headed by the Membership Committee, the Apps Orientation for batch 1314B was held in Alonzo Hall, Vinzons this 22nd of November 2013. With the aims of leaving normal behind and going super this semester, a fair number of potential applicants from different colleges attended to get a glimpse of what UP Kustura is all about.

As

The applicant’s orientation had been a success from start to finish. The applicants were first given a chance to introduce themselves as they were warmly welcomed by the members. Next, they were informed of the tasks that must be done this semester to fully accomplish the application process and become an official member. Important dates and activities were mentioned to give them a piece of what Kustura will be doing in the next five months. Signature sheets, created by the Publicity and Secretariat committee, were provided for them to serve as their guides in fulfilling their tasks, as well as their record book for tambay hours, buddy tasks and event attendance.

to determine the buddy system. The applicants were asked to arrange their seats in a circular manner as the members were positioned in another circle facing the applicants. Thirty seconds for small talk were provided to allow both parties to get to know each other, and then the members’ circle rotate to face new applicants. The applicants were given another couple of minutes to choose the members they want as their buddy and to write their names on a piece paper. The announcement of buddy pairs came right after. Likewise, fun games such as Do You Love Me and Superhero Charades were incorporated in the program to be able to break the ice. After the event, most of the applicants started collecting signatures from the members as the members obliged them and took the opportunity to talk some more. Indeed, UP Kustura is very keen to welcome a new set of members that will add to our growing family. written by: Merzel Demasu-Ay

Of course, buddies were assigned to each applicant to be able to help each of them throughout this semester’s app process. This semester’s apps’ orientation employed the speed dating method

The Diliman Secret Files

The Diliman Secret Files

The Diliman Secret Files

From #TeenageGirlProblems to #MVP This is an account of how a guy with so-called teenage girl problems turned into an MVP. I have many problems—teenage girl problems to be exact. See, I’m a guy with teenage girl problems. I hate my new Faber Castel ballpen. I hate walking a long distance. I’m fat. I’m not tall enough. I frown upon girls from other universities who purposely go to UP-Diliman just to witness the Oblation Run. I don’t have political views. I think that the only reason why people agree with Karl Marx is because he romanticized the things he’d said. Those are just some of my problems. If you could only know me in real life, you’d see that I have a long list of problems and my ever-present friend who is always there to list them down. This ever-present friend of mine once told me that I don’t need a friend. Rather, I need a boyfriend to whom I can vent out all my problems. Well, it’s a very unnecessary remark but I still appreciate it. Some would say that the problem with me (Ha! See? I really do have a problem!) is that I tend to think too much and escalate teeny tiny things and turn them into my worst nightm—I mean problems. At least I have things to think about rather than let my brain remain idle and rot (methaporically!). Well, enough with this and let’s start with my journey towards “MVP-dom”. My eventful journey towards the MVP crown started on sunny Saturday morning at the Simeona Covered Court. Upon seeing other teams (there are 5 teams, including my team), I surmised that we will walk away as the champions. Though the other teams look intimidating, especially the Logistics Committee (they’re an all-boys team!), I was quiteISSUE confident that we’ll win. The Diliman Secret Files The first leg of the competition was prepared by the Membership Committee. To win the game, the four competing teams should take up the shortest time consuming all the food the MemComm has prepared. The first ones to be consumed is a cup filled with mixed vegetable. In my opinion, it would have been easy to eat all the vegetable if not for the ginger. I mean seriously? What is it with you people and your sadistic streak involving gingers? The next part is consuming a cup of raw egg. This part is really easy. The last part is consuming a cup of ampalaya shake. Drinking it is bearable until you get to the bottom of the cup. The bottom half of the shake is really disgusting and bitter. The second leg of the competition was prepared by my team, the Education and Research Committee. To win our game, the teams should obtain the highest number of colored strips of paper in a span of 10 minutes. Each team should only collect a specific color assigned to their team. The papers are attached to a board hanging from an opposing team member’s neck. Seeing them run for their lives and chasing each other while screaming really made my day. The third leg of the competition was prepared by the Finance and Marketing Committee. Theirs consisted of two parts. To win the first part of their game, the teams should take up the shortest time passing a banana over their heads to the next team member using only their feet. The member at the end of the line should run to the front of the line and eat the banana. The task was really easy. It wasn’t a mystery how we all completed the task in a matter of seconds. The second part of the competition, on the other hand, instructs us to blow a ball of cotton from a designated starting line to a finish line. This task required us to have a very mean strategy to outwit each other. Well, a loud-mouthed Physics major and a former Physics major really helped. The fourth leg of the competition was prepared by the Publicity and Secretariat Committee. Their game required the each team to form four separate lines equidistant to each other around a radius. A number is assigned to a member of the different team. When a number is called, the four members of the four teams should cover the circumference of the circle by running and crawling between legs of his/her team members and grab the PET bottle situated at the center of the circle. This game, for me, is probably the most difficult game for it required so much effort. And a pair of bruised knees proved the difficulty of the game. The last part of the competition was prepared by the Logistics Committee. There will be four participating member from each team. One will serve as an arbiter, one will be a commander, and the rest will serve as privates. Aside from the arbiter, all the participating members will be wearing blindfolds. The objective of the game is to eliminate all the other players by throwing water-filled plastics at each other. The arbiter will be instructing his/her teammates on what steps or actions that should be made in order to win. Two rounds were held to determine the two teams that will vie for the specific game’s championship. Each team will be limited to three water-filled plastics per round only. At the end of the competition, a small feast was held where random banters were thrown at each other. Before the day was concluded, awards were given to the ones who stood out throughout the whole competition. Yours truly was awarded as the “Most Valuable Player”. Who would have thought that the guy who rants all the time could be so sporty? And the most rewarding of all the things we went through was being held as the champions. “ KUSTURA OUTREACH 2013

Kindness is loving someone more than they deserve.

– MAR K T WAIN

Giving back has always been one of the central advocacies of UP Kustura, and thus, each year, an Outreach Program is organized by a special committee for a chosen beneficiary from the city of Marikina. Last December 2012, the group has decided to conduct a program for the children of the Damayan at Tiyaga Foundation. This year, December 21 2013, Saturday, we decided to visit the inmates of Marikina City Jail as we shared the spirit of the season with them. Through the support of the Municipalities Jail Management and staff, we have successfully held a Christmas Party for our brothers inside the detention center. UP Kustura members spent their Saturday morning keeping the detainees company and participating in the activities with them. The program was simple and short, but the fulfilling experience and valuable lessons that we have learned were to last forever. MARI-K-ZONE, ISSUE 2 second SEMESTER, AY 2013-2014 Up kustura

KUSTURA OUTREACH 2013

Every minute spent at the Marikina City Jail was worthwhile as we watched the inmates’ incessant smiles and laughter that reverberated all around. Our intention was very simple – to bring warmth and joy to these people and to brighten up their day. Christmas is the season of love for family, being one with them and simply being present in their lives. But our brothers inside the jail will miss their families and all the merriment outside the four walls of the detention center - until when,

only time will tell. For just one day we were able to bring to life the spirit of Christmas to the hearts of our brothers in jail knowing that celebrating the holiday alone is never easy. Throughout the program our priorities were the old and sick inmates, and the ones who haven’t been visited by anyone for a very long time. We had g a m e s , per formances and packed food for everyone to share and enjoy. Together with the active members from UP Kustura, our kuyas from the detention center happily joined in the games Maria went to Town and Singing Bee. Prizes were given out to the winners after each game. The detainees showcased their talents with a song and dance number and it brought the house down. It was truly a wonderful sight as they glided and swayed in the dance floor and as they merrily sang to some favorite Christmas Carols. Through their performances, we felt the joy that it has temporarily brought them as if they have forgotten the loneliness and pain of being alone and separated from their families. Aside from this, “Alakim”, one of the finalists in ABSCBN’s Pilipinas Got Talent did a magic show that became one of the group’s favorites. The

KUSTURA OUTREACH 2013

short inspirational talk given out by our guest speaker, Mr. Hubert Tan Haboc gave the inmates hope to hold on, making them realize that there will always be tomorrow to look forward to. And of course, the dancers of UP Kustura also displayed their dancing prowess as the detainees cheered and applauded their performance all throughout show. The feeling was overwhelming towards the end of the party as we shared with them a simple salu-salo. We served Pancit Malabon, a classic Pinoy favorite and some refreshments to quench their thirst. And what is a Christmas p a r t y

without giftgiving? As the group reflected that the season is about giving and sharing, each inmate received a little token from the members of UP Kustura. We couldn’t help but seize the moment as they beamed and reached out for their gifts excitedly like little children under Santa’s Christmas tree. It was heart warming and truly gratifying for we knew that in our own little way we were a b l e to bring joy and happiness to a rather inauspicious circumstance. Towards the end of the program, hand in hand, we sang Hawak Kamay, a song that conveyed the message that UP Kustura has for the inmates of the Marikina City jail. And as the song goes, “Hawak kamay, di kita iiwanan sa paglalakbay sa mundo ng kawalan...” It was truly a cherished event for the group, and the truth is, it wasn’t only the inmates of the City Jail who gained much from this year’s outreach program, but all of us, the members of the UP Kustura. For just one day, we were shown how lucky we were to have a family by our side not only during Christmas but all the days of our lives. And for that, memories made that day were priceless —simply unforgettable.

MONDAY S W I T H RUS BY RUS A D I R E C T F E AT U R E AC C O U N T

written by: Rus San Diego

In a world where the demand for camaraderie and closeness is high, there was man with a plan and a man without a plan. Both of those men were the titular Rus San Diego (as in the title “Mondays with Rus” that’s what titular means). The plan was simple, every Monday, we spend time with Rus. That’s it.

It is a time to sit down and gettogether to talk and get to know each other, and for some, to be formally introduced for the first time. Chips and snacks were provided for people to consume and also as a catalyst of conversation all the while preserving the Filipino culture of constant eating and chatter. The sun’s happy vibes grazing the skin of those present with its toasty fingers, sweat trickles and the epidermises lose traction while the hearts of once strangers now beat in resonance. Nothing makes people agree with each other than the mutual feeling that it’s hot out.

The event has not been repeated since (reasons undisclosed). As we can see in the title Mondays with Rus, we have three of the worst things in the world: Mondays, being WITH people, and Rus. Who knew that combining all three would lead to such a wonderful and unforgettable event.

The first edition of MWR (as the cool kids call it) was held on the glorious day of December 9, 2013 at the pagoda alongside the Marikina River. Applicants of UP Kustura and members alike get together to stir up a stew of awkwardness and unfamiliarity that of course is used to complement the main course of friendship, mentorship and love. The view and the unique smell of the river just amplify the connection between individuals, like the smell of garlic and butter on a pan wafting in the atmosphere. The second installation of the cult classic MWR is a sports edition. SportsFest as the young’ins would affectionately call it. The venue of the event is Marikit Covered Court - only suitable to conduct volleyball and basketball matches. A set of tournamentstyle matches, as well as a mental set list between participants, were supposed to be accomplished and implemented. However, due to lack of gladiators to hash it out on the arena, we were not able to push through. The warriors present chose to engage in an impromptu match of volleyball with informal rules. The yells and the roars of competitiveness and joy echoed off the iron sheets and the green and red concrete floors were stained brown with the skids of the blazing footwear and washed away by the perspiration and blood (okay, not blood) flowing from the hearts and faces of the competitors.

In 2010, the Christmas party was held with the apps’ night (my first app) in this tiny floor at the J. Dela Pena Barangay Hall. It was filled with sabaw performances from the apps back then and “traditional” games. In 2011, after the Outreach program, we went to Mang Inasal at the Riverbanks Mall and ate there. Afterwards, we went down to the amphitheatre and exchanged gifts. No legitimate, as in with a program and all, Christmas party for the members and the applicants was planned. The same happened in 2012, where we went to SM Masinag after the Outreach program and exchanged gifts at the food court.

C

This year, we took a chance and assigned a team for the Christmas party alone, so that we would be able to have a better bonding experience – a meaningful celebration of Christmas for the members alone. The chance we took paid off. The team, led by Anna Frias, was able to create what we have envisioned. The Christmas party took place at Fadan’s. Everyone wore red and white, in line with the theme. El Divo and the Band, UP Kustura’s homegrown talent, started the party with a performance. Food was then served, probably everybody’s favorite part of the night. I personally felt like there was a surplus of food, and even after the party proper, there was still plenty! Performances and games

followed. Kazel danced to Beyonce hits, when we actually wanted her to recreate her FR performance (hehe). Kustura’s resident magician Ephraim, assisted by Marion, wowed the crowd with his magic tricks. For the last performance, and the most anticipated, Jose and Alex danced the Anniv Night routine to everyone’s delight and kilig. After the performances, the gift-giving ensued. People would have to mime the codename they picked. I think everyone liked the gift they received, well, almost everyone since two of our members received gifts that were for the opposite sex! After the gift-giving, the Executive Committee was called up front and I had no idea why. I was asking them why we were called, I might have missed it while I was busy talking to other people but they didn’t answer my question. I had no idea, and was certainly surprised when my ExeComm presented me with their gift! It was very sweet and thoughtful and I honestly had a hard time holding back the tears because I didn’t expect anything. To my ExeComm, thank you (again)! The party carried on afterwards. It was most certainly the best Christmas party I’ve ever had with the org. Everyone was laughing and enjoying the night. I felt the love. I felt the bonding of a family. It was truly a special night. It was a celebration of Christmas, of love, and of one another. written by: Loisa Amat

ANSWER ME A QUESTION Thoughts on JeUPardy 2014 JEOPARDY – a game where the answer is the question and the question is the answer. Confusing? If you are familiar with the show, you know what I mean. But not all people know about the game show, even I myself, until I was able to watch Jeopardy, the UP way. Jeopardy turned into JeUPardy. That is the way we do it in UP Kustura, the sole organizer of the event, held last February 14, 2014 at the Lorena Barros Hall. The same mechanics of the original game show goes for JeUPardy. Three teams will compete per game board – the losing team gets eliminated while the winning team will be able to move on to the next level until it reaches the championship round. Categories range from academicsrelated items such as answers from the sciences, mathematics etc. to the most unexpected ones such as teleseryes. It is literally about MARI-K-ZONE, ISSUE 2 second SEMESTER, AY 2013-2014 Up kustura

anything under the sun, and it will surely test how much information an individual can stock up however random and absurd it may be. It was a huge success having a registry of more than 65 attendees including 22 contestants making up 11 teams, a record for the organization’s event. Each team was requested to think of a team name, which turned out to be witty names like “Teambyerna”, “Team Ang”, “RaBean”, etc. After hours of competition, Teambyerna , with team players Jennievieve Babaan and Luis Carlos M., won the competition. One word for their team: courageous. They won the competition because they had the guts to gamble and put all of their collected points at stake for a chance of doubling it at the Final Jeopardy. They were followed by teams RaBean and Back2Back on 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Being one of the organizers of the event, I was expecting to be stressed during the event itself. And indeed, I did. However, I did not expect to have that much fun as the program progresses. You will be amazed at how the contestants get so competitive and seem to know all the answers. Once you get to watch the way they answer, you might even question yourself: ‘Where in the world did they learn about that?’ And I swear I said that to myself a multiple times. It is also educational, an event from where you can get more than a handful of trivia. It might sound biased, but I tell you, it was very entertaining. If you still do not believe me, try to go to JeUPardy 2015 and see what I am talking about. written by: Mico Santos

Spearheaded by the applicants’ batch officers, Ella Eleazar and Regine Patio, they were able to come up with a wet and wild theme for the event and for the whole organization to enjoy. It was indeed fun to see that everyone participated and went along by dressing up, both the applicants and the members. There was also a showcase of talents that aims to let the members know the applicants in a new light. The talent portion of the program also aims to show off their creative and innovative as well as their ability to work well with a group. The potential members also organized some games (with modified mechanics!) such as

Exhaust, Suck and Blow, and Iputok Mo as one of their first bonding activities with the members of the organization. After the program, the apps and some members headed to the pool to spend the night wet and wild. (Minds off the gutter, please) It was a real achievement to see that the applicants were able to bring together everything properly—from the program to the venue, from the food to the fun. We believe that this whole application process, especially the Apps’ Night, was able to develop their sense of leadership, as well as their camaraderie and group dynamics. Hopefully, they will be able to use these skills to prepare them for the challenges and craziness that await them as a certified Kustura member. written by: Charm Miranda

A MemComm Head’s Account

the n o i t a c i appl s s e c o r p

A roller-coaster ride. That is how I’d describe the second semester’s application process. From the start, we were proud and excited to know that UP Kustura was able to recruit at least 30 interested and willing applicants! The organization was deeply overwhelmed by the outcome of its publicity campaigns for the application process. We were handling, by far, the most number of applicants Kustura has seen in its 12 years of existence. It almost seemed too good to be true. And it was. As the semester progressed, the number of applicants continued to decrease until the organization was left with a few brave 14. These 14 applicants were trained and managed by the Membership Committee with the hopes of honing them to become the future leaders of UP Kustura. But as they always say, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” Indeed, from those 30 applicants down to the 14 brave ones, UP Kustura is proud to welcome the chosen 8. We are confident that these 8 new members do not only dress the part but are committed to it as well. As the members did their part in training the applicants well, now, it is their turn to prove that taking a chance on them will never be a regret for UP Kustura.

JONNA RIGO

PUBLICITY & SECRETARIAT COMMITTEE HEAD

YESTERDAY All nominations were in come February 6. The challenge arose during the confirmation period when many declined and no one was left to fill in the position of the EdRes Head. It took a moment of consultation and motivation until someone felt the need, and only then was the final line-up was announced and the battle began. And then the GPOAs of the candidates caught the attention of the members. Each candidate had his/her own vision of the organization; but one thing is for sure, all of them aimed to weave a better UP Kustura. These propositions were further presented in the Miting De Avance (MDA), an affair marked by both formality and fun. The formality set the mood and established that this is the primer, which should be taken seriously because the future of the organization lies in knowing what its future leaders have to offer. The members actively asked the candidates about their plans to get to know them better, to which the candidates willingly responded to. The MDA was a success, as determined by the good qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

36

The excitement and anxiety could no longer be contained. An environment of suspense, victory, joy, and hope surrounded the tambayan last February 28, Friday – only a day after the MDA. After a long wait until 5:30 when almost all votes were in, people waited around while the COMELEC members were manually counting the votes for transparency purposes. Abstaining never defeated the members. Doubt was there, some voted abstain, but most members were brave enough, realizing the organization will be in good hands of whoever among the candidates would emerge as hailed leaders. While some may have predicted the winners already, the suspense as a name was said and as a stroke was plotted near that name was inexplicable. Nevertheless, nothing could have been asked more of the candidates. Win or lose, it was their passion in serving that was highlighted all throughout the process.

kustura election 2014

TOMORROW This coming year, while ExeComm 2013-2014 is deemed as the best set thus far, the new set will continue to make UP Kustura even prouder as progress keeps running in the organization.

UP Kustura will stop taking unnecessary breaks as it moves through its path. UP Kustura will continue following the good track set by the last batch; and UP Kustura will start leaving more footmarks that will surely leave a mark in its members, in UP and its community.

From Non- Belieber: “Sir bakit malaki paa ni Tapel? :)))” From OpenHappiness: “Paano po ba makamit ang happiness? Kayo po ba, nakuha niyo na ang happiness niyo? *wink wink*”

Madali lang naman makamit ang happiness. Sabi nga ng iba, happiness is a choice.

From Tita Swarding: “Ano ang iyong prediction ngayong 2014?”

Tas magmamahal ako at mabibigo. Like every year.

MARI-K-ZONE, ISSUE 2 second SEMESTER, AY 2013-2014 Up kustura

Yes.

THE

PYTHAGO THEOREM

Oh no! UGH KILL ME NOW!! :((((((((

From Star: “Why does first love never die?”

Pizz out! >:) \m/ =))))”

Kasi mahirap. Basta ang two plus two ay Lapu-Laupu.

From El Divotee: “Kung may kailangang mamatay sa El DiVo, sino?”

From UP Kutsara: “Kung ang Kustura ay isang season ng Survivor, sino sa tingin mo ang dapat ma-vote out?”

Lahat kami kailangang mamatay dahil masasama kaming tao.

First of all, I would like to say NEE KHA RAHG WAH. While we are in the subject of Nicaragua, ivo-vote out ko si Jerome.

in theof a eyes member new UP Kustura held their semender for the Second Semester of the AY 2013-2014 last April 9, 2014 at the Dizon Resort, Masinag. The sem-ender did not only serve as a celebration for surviving another semester but also as an event to welcome the new members, and to turn over the positions to the new leaders of the organization. As a new member, I felt the warm welcome of the other members of the organization as we ate together in a boodle fight, sang into whatever song is playing in the karaoke, and played games such as the agawan panyo in the pool (or agawan damit in our case). It felt as if we’ve been part of UP Kustura even before we were inducted as members because of the way the members treat us. The sem-ender also gave us the chance to finally talk to the members we seldom had the chance to talk to during the application process. There was a short program for the turnover of positions and I can say by the former leaders’ messages and their “drama hits” that UP Kustura is more of a family than just an organization. The Outgoing Executive Committee also shared what the organization has achieved over the whole academic year and what’s to be improved for the next years to come. The new leaders of each committee also welcomed their committee members during the short program. From what I’ve seen and heard not only in the sem-ender party but in the span of the whole application process as well, it has been indeed an awesome semester, or year rather, for UP Kustura, and it was great to end it with the people who made it so. written by: Regine Patio

The telltale signs are there for everyone to see and for the world to know – the synesthesia of thoughts and emotions scattered all throughout the social media, the constant flutter of excited commotion, and the plethora of extravagant social functions to memorialize a sure, stable and dignified farewell. Indeed, one does not need a leisurely cruise along the University Avenue to know that once again it is sunflower season – and rumor has it, the last one – the time of the year awaited and dreamed of by every Isko and Iska during the years of the sweet mental torture that is their UP life. It is a time of juxtapositions, many would say, of conflicting sentiments and contradicting situations, of beginnings and endings, of tears and laughter, of joy and sadness and of love and war as they don on the iconic sablay in celebration of the new life that awaits them and in commemoration of the old one they will leave behind. It is undeniably, irrevocably and indisputably the month of UP graduation. For our resident graduating UP Kustura members, however, it is the perfect fairy tale ending to the beginning of change as a member of the organization. Indeed, what better way to end the year we were ‘Renewed’ than a day of sunshine and beginnings? Here’s what our featured UP Kustura veterans have to say regarding their moments of success, sweat… and sunflower pollen.

She is ‘Ate Roi’ to most of the organization’s members, simply ‘Rona’ to her friends, and ‘MGA Rona’ to her best friends – whatever we call her, she was the organization’s ‘Ate.’ She is an inspiration for academic excellence and work ethic for so many, and though the newbies did not have much time to get to know her, there is a doubly special place for her in the hearts of the UP Kustura’s old members. Are you Graduating #Sana or Graduating #Finally? How does it feel like?

As one UP Kustura’s most active members throughout the years, April had a lot on her plate: being able to balance academics, a part-time job, commitments with other organizations and life as a UP Kustura member is not an easy feat, even for someone as hardworking and diligent as April. Her skills and her likeable ways have won her many friends in the organization, and indeed, losing her is losing one of the organization’s best assets.

Graduating #Sana. Bittersweet. What is your fondest and craziest memory with UP Kustura?

12th anniv night! && Christmas party 2013!! If you can describe your UP Kustura experience using a body part, what would it be, how, and why?

Feet, symbolizing the almost exhausting yet fulfilling and worthwhile journey/hike/ climb I had with Kustura. We conquered mountains! (Hehe special mention to the excellent exepeeps! Good job! :-bd) Also, Kustura took me to happy places, figuratively.

graduates of 2014 interview

Are you Graduating #Sana or Graduating #Finally? How does it feel like?

How do I even begin to describe Loisa Angelyn Amat? Not even a Mean Girls-style description for Regina George can suffice to accurately and completely articulate what she did to the organization and who she is to its members. In the beginning, she was then called the visage of change…and she will always be. But with change comes challenge, and Loisa’s term as the org’s Chairperson had not been an easy ride. Yet, she remained firm in principle, calm in indecision and wise in her thoughts and actions. For this, her legacy and her contribution to leading UP Kustura to greatness as well as her leadership and zeal will forever be marked in the pages of the organization’s history.

It’s more of Graduating #Huhu. I can’t believe it. Ang bilis ng 4 years. I’m so sad that college is over for me and that I’ll leave a lot of my friends behind. UP has become a sanctuary for me and I can’t imagine living a life outside it. HUHU. At the same time, I’m very happy and very excited because I’m gonna try out new things and go into an even bigger adventure! What is your fondest and craziest memory with UP Kustura?

Fondest, probably the Christmas Party this A.Y. or the 2nd sem FR. The Christmas party this year was the best one I’ve experienced as a member and it felt like a celebration of love and family. The 2nd sem FR was really special because it was also the turnover and the send-off huhu ♥ Craziest, hmmmm. Well, this was actually when I wasn’t a member yet haha we had this mini-bonding when we were apps and... hehe yay :) If you can describe your UP Kustura experience using a body part, what would it be, how, and why?

Hand. I’ve always associated the hand with helping. UP Kustura helped me discover who I am. It helped me go out of my comfort zone and push myself to strive for a bigger cause. I learned to think about all the other people who would get affected by little decisions. I learned to love, not just one person, but an entire organization. UP Kustura also helped me in a sense that I became more aware, I felt more relevant to the City of Marikina through the various activities such as the LISTO, Outreach and the occasional Project Hope. In return, I did everything I can to give back to the org and help in all the ways possible. ♥

Hi, Jonna :) After experiencing UP Kustura, what are the strenghts and weaknesses of this organization?

Well for this year, I can say that one of our strengths is that we pushed ourselves out of our comfort zones. We aimed for bigger and better projects, and I can say that we were successful. In general, there is strength in numbers. We have a lot of members and we can accomplish a whole lot more if everyone cooperates. Another strength is that we love the organization and I know we

work with the org’s best interest in our hearts. We are a growing organization and there are still a lot we can try and do. Our weaknesses, however, lie in our number as well. Now that there are a lot of members, we need to find a way to utilize everyone so that everyone can function. We must also stop banking on the “veterans” to do the work. Following deadlines is another weakness. Hehe. With all of these in mind, there are still a lot of room for improvement and I can’t wait to see the organization improve further. Treat this year as a stepping stone to even greater accomplishments for the years to come.

Bakit?

Count On Me by Bruno Mars Listen to the song, and you’ll know why! Haha it’s the perfect song to describe my life as a Kusture member and it’s pretty much the song I’ll dedicate to Kustura forever. I’ve always done everything I can for the org, no excuses, no bullshit. :) I helped in every way I can, and I hope you guys know that even if I’m graduating, you can always count on me (like 1, 2, 3). What is your farewell message to the organization in 140 characters or less?

I love you guys. My college life wouldn’t be half as fun without this org. I’ll always be here for you so never, ever hesitate to contact me.

s Marikeños we all wanted to promote our beloved city of Marikina, which is the advocacy behind UP Kustura’s new infographic webseries, Footprints. It’s a project initiated by the Education and Research Committee together with the Publicity and Secretariat Committee of the organization. Its pilot webisode, “The Cityhood of Marikina” aired last December 2013. The idea started with a conversation about local news channels at the tambayan, and one of the members mentioning about Solar News Channel. As a natural stalker researcher, as well as out of curiosity, and ignorance of the existence of such channel, I looked it up on the Internet and found their Facebook page where I got to watch Revisited - a series of one-minute informative videos about Filipino culture, which served as the inspiration for Footprints. As we planned things through in EdRes, we first called the project “À la Revisited”, before Grazielle Chua, the Publicity and Secretariat head, came up with its brilliant name. We had a few to choose from: Kustura Fact Bites, Step Back, Back Step (haha), and, of course, Footprints. From this short history of the project, I’d like everyone to be proud of themselves for they all have contributed to this, in their own little ways, even when they’re not aware of it. Who would have thought that a simple conversation at the tambayan could end up to an idea of another great project of the organization?

One roller coaster term, a myriad of changes, and several new projects later, the Outgoing Executive Committee of UP Kustura AY 2013-2014 has reached their point of no return, and as they sign off and turn over their responsibilities to a new and promising batch of leaders, they deserve no less than these precious pages to summarize and celebrate their term and to give them, ultimately, a proper and penultimate sendoff.

I believe that my active participation this past year is worth knowing for. If you did not apply to become a member of UP Kustura, what could have happened in your life and why?

I could have been expending my entire college life together with my highschool friends. But without this org, our friendship might not have been this bonded. I may have not created companions of great variety considering my nature and with it, I may have been wasting my time without any excitement. this org is a family and I have been adopted and saved from extreme delineation. Imagining a life away from today is difficult for this org completes my college life.

Haha. You are stranded in a building full of zombies. Who among your fellow outgoing ExeComm members would you choose as a sidekick and why?

Hmmm. Haha walang magseselos (wushuu~). Considering her skills, masasabi kong kakayanin naman naning magsurvive kahit mga ilang buwan. Masaya kasama si

Chua at mahinhin pa (konti) kaya masaya sigurong maglaho lahat ng iyon under extreme situations.

Bakit dun, ito ay dahil Marikina org tayo at what’s more rewarding than to be part of the city’s hall.

Bakit?

Definitely the improved application process. I must say, it is one of the main goals of the organization to produce quality members. I’d like to believe I was able to achieve that, alongside each member of the org, of course. I know we have trained these new members to soon be great leaders of the org.

My greatest contribution is my leadership. Haha. We have accomplished a lot during my term as the Chairperson (quality members, sustainable funds, bigger and better events, this magazine). I think all of those would not be possible without my guidance and initiative and the whole ExeComm’s dedication.

I found them here I found you guys. :) Narealize kong para mafeel mong part ka ng family, kailangan mong maging open sa mga kasama mo, at basically, just take part in the activities. We Found Love ♥ kasi we were in a hopeless place nung start ng term. Chos. Hahaha. We Found Love kasi sobrang bonded kami. Sobrang love ko na sila. I can’t imagine working with any other set of people. :) What is your message to your successor in 140 characters or less?

Good luck! I’m sure you’ll do well and continue our legacy. Hoping to see a bigger and better org next year! ‘ll always be here for you :)

HINDI LANG PARANG LOVE, LOVE TALAGA. GRAZIELLE CHUA, 2013

Life is indeed a cycle – with goodbye comes hello, with endings come beginnings, with separation comes bringing together. There is always a way to even out change and to maintain the balance of existence. However, it is one thing to go with the flow of the cycle and another to dare and fulfill a legacy – and that’s what the Outgoing ExeComm of UP Kustura has achieved. They have not only established standards for all future UP Kustura leaders but also set examples of coordination and unity among the organization’s members. And true enough, their legacy has begun, and it is for us to continue. words by: Charnina Maguddayao

Set positive goals and then be as negative as you can to attract the goal towards you. Today’s Sun/ Moon alignment will cause to hallucinate vivid images of a monkey eating a banana erotically if you set your positive goal as “getting some ecstasy”.

A Love Letter I don’t even know how to begin. I’ve wanted to write this for quite some time now. But I haven’t found the right words. At times, I thought I have, and then I’d scrap the whole thing after a few words. I just really want to talk about my experience in UP Kustura, and how that experience changed my life (cheesy, I know). In 2010, I was a freshie who made a pact with two other friends – a pact to graduate org-less. The following semester, I applied for two orgs, and I deferred from one of those. In 2011, I became a member of the other organization, but it didn’t feel like home. I decided to reapply to the org I deferred from: UP Kustura. UP Kustura became my family, my sanctuary. I learned a lot more than I realized during my 2.5 years with the organization. It was my home because I made it so. That’s one thing I learned. In my other org, I wasn’t open to other people, I built walls around me – and then I wondered why I didn’t feel the sense of belongingness most members feel. It was all on me. This is something I want to imbibe with you guys. I have heard how, for a lot of you, UP Kustura is your home. I have also heard how the rest wants to feel that Kustura is a home. Well, the trick here is to be open to other people, to listen to what they have to say and to respect their views and opinions. No one would want to talk to a close-minded person. I made Kustura my home by opening myself up to the members and by listening and supporting them as they open themselves up to me. I also made it a point to attend as many events as I can, and stay in the tambayan whenever my schedule permits me. This had me interacting with most of the members, sharing stories and engaging in different activities. If you feel out of the loop, I suggest you start showing up. And remember, you have to be there, in all possible sense. Stepping up is another thing I learned to do in this organization. In my first semester as a member, I stepped up (because no one wanted to) and became the logistics head for a Marikina City tour for Japanese students. That experience made me feel like I really am a part of this organization. As time passed, I grew to really care and really love the organization. As I came to love the org, I also began noticing flaws in our system, began feeling the stagnation we are in danger of being in. With that, I also began coming up with solutions to the flaws, programs, projects and initiatives we can implement to begin growing. In my third semester in the org, I became the head of the Outreach Program, still my favorite

project ever. It was then that I realized the org needed a mother to nurture it and to motivate it to achieve bigger things. During the said semester, election was coming and I was nominated for a handful of positions. I was supposed to run for Log head, but I knew then, I want to see the changes implemented before I graduate. All my ideas, my aspirations for the org, they wouldn’t materialize if I settle for the said position. Thus, I ran for Chair. Without prior ExeComm experience, I knew people would be skeptical. I knew it will be the number one criticism I’d get. I didn’t care. I’m glad I didn’t. I’m glad you trusted me. I gained a lot from this org and I knew it was the right way to give back. I presented my plans, so scared of the feedback I’ll get, so scared that I’d fail to convince you. And then I won. After that, I was scared I won’t be able to deliver. I was scared I’d prove those who said I can’t do it right. Well, I hope I was able to deliver and I hope I proved them wrong. Where am I going with this? I’m having a hard time putting my thoughts into words. All I really want to say is that I love this org. I love you guys. I love how this org led me to people I would treasure in my heart forever. I love how it made me become the person I am today. I love that I was given the chance to lead it. I love that most of the members welcomed the changes brought in last year, that we pushed ourselves for a better and brighter year – paving the way for even better and brighter years to come. As I have said, I gained so much (bring in the weight jokes) from this org. From the lessons I have mentioned, to all the people I met here, re-applying for this org has got to be the best decision I’ve made in college. Without the org, I probably wouldn’t have known most of you. I wouldn’t have met Sarah F, Jose, Benson, Sarah S and Grazielle and I wouldn’t feel this lucky and this honored to have worked with them in the ExeComm. I can’t imagine working (and spending the night scaring ourselves) with anyone else – our combination is just too perfect. Our meetings were always fruitful and fun. I didn’t expect to love my ExeComm as much as I love them now but they’re just too damn lovable :)) I hope you guys know how much I love you and how much I’m gonna miss spending afternoons and having sleepovers with you guys. I’m so proud of all of you for being the best leaders one could ever hope for. I honestly wouldn’t have asked for better set of people to lead the org with. I probably wouldn’t have met Jerry, and I honestly can’t imagine my life without him. If you told me in 2010 that I’d meet my person in college, I probably wouldn’t believe you. I didn’t expect to meet someone who would be so patient with me, who would believe in me when

I didn’t believe in myself, who would constantly give words of encouragement, who would make me feel this comfortable that I’d let my guard down, who would accept me despite all my flaws. Thank you, Kustura, for this guy. I wouldn’t have known the Step Apps, the app batch I am most proud of. Sorry for this display of favoritism, but out of all the app batches I have encountered in the org, this set of people have grown to become leaders in a short span of time. Half the candidates for the ExeComm 14-15 elections were from this app batch. Two of them are now in the ExeComm. Most of them were heads of mini projects within the org. All of them were brilliant workers within their committees and event teams. I can’t wait to see all of you bloom and grow into wonderful and talented leaders. I wouldn’t have known all of you, and my life wouldn’t have been touched by such awesome people. I wouldn’t have had a home in UP. I wouldn’t have found a place where I’d feel like I belong. I love you, every one of you, for being a part of my family in UP. I’m so sad that I wasn’t able to be as close to everyone as I’d hoped to be, but I hope you know that I care for all of you, and for the org. I honestly cannot imagine my college life without you, the countless stories we shared, all the laughs and all the hardships we’ve faced. To the new ExeComm, I hope you’ll be as close as we, in ExeComm 13-14, are. Listen to each other and respect each other’s opinions. Learn from the past. Enjoy the present. Build the future. And Sarah S, I hope you know that I’ll always be here for you and for the org, so don’t ever hesitate to ask for help whenever needed. I am excited to see where you’ll be leading the org. I hope we’ll have another sleepover in the future hehe. To everyone, I hope you’d always have the org’s best interest at heart. Love the org and love each other. Attend as much events and meetings as possible. Avoid being there only for the good times, I hope you stick around for the bad times as well. Reply as soon as possible. Take responsibility for your actions. Speak up. Listen. Enjoy ♥

With love, Loisa Angleyn L. Amat
