From dust to dust: Uncovering the hidden dangers of dust exposure
Imagine walking into your local pub and being handed a pint of dust. For workers across many industries this outlandish image isn’t far from reality when it comes to volume of dust consumption.
Over a lifetime, workers can unknowingly inhale harmful dust particles that accumulate to the equivalent of that unimaginable pint. The long-term health effects are devastating and largely avoidable with the right measures in place.
Dustcontrol UK, a leader in dust extraction solutions, is raising awareness about the often-overlooked health risks of dust exposure in the workplace. From respiratory diseases to severe conditions like cancer, working in dusty environments can result in serious, lifealtering health problems.
Construction, manufacturing, and other industries create high levels of dust on a daily basis. According to the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), harmful dust types include silica, asbestos, and wood dust, all of which can pose significant health risks when inhaled.
Silica dust, for instance, is responsible for about 500 deaths annually in the UK . This fine dust is found in materials like concrete and stone, making it a major hazard for construction workers. Longterm exposure can lead to silicosis, a debilitating lung disease, and even lung cancer.
Perhaps more well known is asbestos dust, which is still lingering in older buildings and kills approximately 5,000 workers a year. The dust is so harmful that even small amounts can have deadly effects
Also, wood dust from cutting or sanding wood can lead to respiratory issues and increase the risk of nasal cancer.
The dust workers inhale today may take years or even decades to manifest as serious health conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. In extreme cases, the consequences are fatal.
It’s not just about inhaling dust. Over time, workers in dusty environments may be consuming more dust than they ever imagined. The fine particles that linger in the air, unnoticed, can settle into food, drink, and even the lungs, creating a ticking time bomb for their health. Think of it like passively drinking dust – a far cry from the safe and clean environments we expect to work in.
The good news is that with the right dust control systems, the risks posed by dust can be significantly reduced. Dustcontrol UK specialises
in designing high-performance dust extraction equipment that captures dust at its source, preventing it from becoming airborne and endangering workers.
Innovations like HEPA-filtered mobile extractors and background air cleaners play a key role in ensuring that dust is removed before it has a chance to harm workers. By combining on-tool dust extraction with powerful air filtration systems, businesses can drastically cut down on airborne dust particles
“We’ve seen firsthand how effective dust control solutions can change the health outlook of an entire workforce,” says Ira Morris, Country Manager of Dustcontrol UK. “Our systems capture and contain dust right where it’s generated, creating healthier, safer environments across construction, manufacturing, and other industries.”
The importance of maintaining dust-free environments cannot be overstated. In the UK, dust-related health issues are preventable. Employers have both a legal and moral obligation to protect their staff from unnecessary exposure. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002
mandate that employers must implement adequate control measures to reduce the risks
By investing in dust extraction solutions and adhering to strict health and safety regulations, businesses can safeguard their workers, ensuring that the only thing they’re breathing at work is clean air – not dust.
With over 50 years of expertise, Dustcontrol UK provides innovative dust extraction solutions to a wide range of industry sectors, including food processing and pharmaceuticals. The Dustcontrol product range includes the DC Tromb and AirCube 500, renowned for durability and superior performance. In addition to supplying high-quality equipment, Dustcontrol UK offers comprehensive servicing and maintenance packages, further enhancing the longevity and efficiency of its systems.

The e-commerce boom shows no signs of slowing, with year-on-year growth approaching 10%. This surge is driving businesses to rapidly expand their warehouse operations, a necessary step to meet escalating consumer demands. However, this expansion brings with it a host of new challenges, particularly in maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring worker safety. As warehouses around the world face these challenges, it’s becoming increasingly clear that investing in smart safety solutions will no longer be just for regulatory reasons, but also a critical component to drive long-term business success.
From cost to strategic investment
The modern warehouse is a complex ecosystem of people, automated systems, and heavy machinery. As these spaces grow in size and complexity, the potential for accidents and injuries increases exponentially. Traditional safety measures, while important, are no longer sufficient to address the risks in these dynamic environments. It’s time to rethink and upgrade.
This is where innovative safety solutions come into play. Advanced technologies such as AI-powered monitoring systems, smart barriers, and IIoT-enabled safety equipment are set to revolutionise how we approach warehouse safety. These solutions not only protect assets and employees but significantly boost productivity and reduce costly incidents.
Innovations like intelligent barrier systems that dissipate impact energy, protecting both structures and vehicles while minimising downtime; or AI-driven analytics that can predict potential safety hazards before they occur, allowing for proactive risk management represent a shift in how we think about workplace safety. Safety solutions have gone from being a necessary cost to a strategic investment that drives operational efficiency through decreasing risk.
A-SAFE is a global leader in workplace safety solutions. As the creator of the world’s first industrialstrength polymer barrier safety system, innovation is at A-SAFE’s core. Supplying transformative safety tech to warehouses, factories, airports, and more, A-SAFE’s impact spans across 65+ countries around the world.
Decreasing risk during e-commerce peaks
Investing in safety solutions during e-commerce peaks is crucial for warehousing environments due to the huge influx of temporary workers that companies hire to meet demand. These seasonal employees often lack the extensive training and experience of permanent staff, which in turn increases the risk of accidents and injuries. Advanced safety measures can compensate for this knowledge gap, protecting both novice and seasoned workers alike.
Smart safety systems, such as IIoT-powered solutions and their resulting AI-driven data analytics, will provide an additional layer of protection during these highpressure periods. They can detect potential hazards that untrained eyes might miss, such as accident hotspots, real-time maintenance, or load-stability monitoring, alerting supervisors and workers to dangers before accidents occur.
Moreover, the implementation of smart safety solutions can help workers feel safer even during stressful peak periods. A recent study by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin revealed that by developing a safety culture in the workplace, they were able to
boost productivity by 24%. It also helps to mitigate the financial and reputational risks associated with workplace accidents, ensuring that the increased activity during e-commerce peaks remains efficient and safe without any disaster stories in the media that affect brand reputation.
The smart choice
As the e-commerce sector continues to expand, the demand for warehousing is evolving in tandem. According to Gartner, 50% of warehouses will be underpinned by IIoT technology by 2027, which gives those who are not planning to a small window to catch up. Investing in smart safety solutions will no longer be a matter of compliance – it will become a strategic advantage.
By embracing innovative technologies like IIoT and AI and creating a smart factory, businesses can better protect their workforce, boost productivity, and secure their future in what is an increasingly competitive market. Don’t wait for accidents to happen; take proactive steps today to create a safer, more efficient warehouse environment that’s ready for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Sandford PR welcomes Russian For Fish: East-London based architecture practice known forsustainable, playful, contemporary residential design
Founded in 2006 by 3rd-generation architect Pereen d’Avoine, Russian For Fish was born initially as a means of entering an architecture competition (which the practice won), and has since gone from strength to strength. 2025 marks the 10 year anniversary of the current partnership between Pereen and co-director Nilesh Shah - a significant milestone for the pair.
Russian For Fish offers a full range of architectural and interior design services, overseeing every element of client projects for new-builds, complete ceiling-to-gable renovations, extension additions, kitchen transformations, and interior fit-out. Working mostly with clients across the capital and throughout the South-East, the firm is renowned for its unique approach to colour, materials, structure, and architectural detail.
With increased demand for sustainable building applications, Russian For Fish is well positioned as a business which has always encouraged clients to improve the performance of existing housing stock (currently accounting for around 20% of the UK’sCO2 emissions), and to refurbish rather than demolish. They pride themselves on working with local contractors and fabricators, utilising eco-friendly materials and techniques.
Sandford PR is delighted to be working the practice at such an important time in its development.
Speaking on the collaboration, founder and co-director Pereen d’Avoire comments:
“We’re thrilled to be working with Katherine and the team. We’re about to hit an important milestone for the businesscelebrating ten years of my partnership with the wonderful Nilesh in 2025, and it’s the perfect time for us to promote the work we’ve been doing and to tell our story in a way that we’ve never really done. Sandford is an excellent fit, having worked in this industry for many years.
We see our main point of difference in the industry as offering quietly extraordinary designs, focusing on architectural detail and materiality, and truly tailored to the client. We like to think there isn’t really a ‘Russian For Fish look’; instead, we listen and collaborate closely with each client individually and focus on their aesthetic and practical requirements. We work with sustainable surfaces and practices wherever possible. We often work with local craftsmen on our projects, introducing clients to new production methods and solutions not often implemented elsewhere in the sector.
We’re known particularly for our extension work, which creates functional spaces for families filled with natural light.
We have completed lots of projects that we’re incredibly proud of. We look forward to sharing them, and cementing our reputation for homes that balance architectural beauty, with playfulness, practicality and function.”

A stone-built property in rural Wales has been installed with a Panasonic Aquarea T-CAP J Series 9kW monobloc air-to-water heat pump to replace an oil-fired boiler. Specialist heat pump installer, Paul Thorney of Air2Heat, specified the Panasonic heat pump to provide the three-bedroom stone wall converted barn property with sustainable heating and domestic hot water. The Panasonic system was purchased and delivered to site through distributors Farr and Harris in Shropshire.
Homeowner, Roger May explained the choice to convert from an oil-fired boiler to an air-source heat pump. He said, “We’ve had oil-fired central heating since we moved in as this was our only option given the property’s rural location. It started off as no problem at all, 7p a litre when we first came, but it’s since peaked at between 80-90p a litre. When we first started to investigate alternatives, we didn’t know a great deal about heat pumps, but sought the advice of heating specialist, Paul Thorney from Air2Heat, who is very knowledgeable and has experience of retrofitting older properties.”
Looking for a simple solution that would provide efficient heating, reduce energy consumption and keep energy bills to a minimum, the homeowners turned to the installer, Air2Heat, who after visiting the property and reviewing the heat loss calculations, recommended the Panasonic Aquarea J Series 9kW monobloc heat pump, along with the Panasonic Smart and Service Cloud
controls to be the best solution. The Panasonic units can provide the high energy efficiencies required and can be further monitored with the Panasonic Aquarea smart cloud controls to achieve optimum benefit.
The owners of the property were advised that the installation would be eligible for the UK government BUS grant. With this scheme, installing a heat pump, the homeowner receives a grant of £7,500 from the government.
The new system will also cost them less to run, be more energy efficient and a more environmentally friendly solution.
Paul said, “By specifying the Panasonic Aquarea J Series T-CAP unit it really boiled down to the excellent efficiencies it can deliver, with high performance, and a CoP of up to 5.4. I have been involved in heat pumps since 2015, and from what I have witnessed so far, when it comes down to efficiencies, Panasonic come out best. If other oil users around rural Britain knew how low-cost heat pumps were, we would very quickly expedite the swap. It is reducing their carbon footprint and reducing their bills. In addition, the ongoing support from not only the distributors but also Panasonic, the manufacturer themselves is an excellent bonus.”
Ensuring the temperature remained constant was an important part of the homeowner’s decision, as they wanted to move away from the fluctuating temperatures of the oil-fired system. Homeowner, Sarah May, seeks to dispel the myths of heat pumps. She commented, “It’s absolutely amazing, we’ve got a lovely constantly warm house, it’s not that intense heat when you put your oil-fired central heating on, and your radiators are not scorching hot but more of a milder warmth. A lot of people ask if our heat pump is noisy, no, it is not and surprisingly quiet. We couldn’t be more satisfied with our new Panasonic heat pump system.”
Panasonic Aquarea T-CAP J Series air-to-water heat pump
The Panasonic J Series High Performance heat pump boasts an A+++ Energy Class, available in a range of sizes from 9 to 16 kW, and can be attached to the internal domestic hot water tank (DHW) for ease of installation. With the added benefit of Panasonic Smart Cloud and Service Cloud, that enable remote control and monitoring of the heating system, homeowners are empowered to track energy consumption and control output. Furthermore, installers are given access to remote monitoring capabilities for swift diagnosis and resolution of the system’s operation, reducing wait time and cost.
Paul Thorney complimented Panasonic’s support, stating, “Panasonic’s customer support is amongst the best I have seen in the UK, they are really proactive and offer lots of support throughout, during and after an install. Plus, they are striving to do better all the time, it is not just about the products. As an installer I can see the effort they put into their back up assistance and know there is support in place if anything goes wrong. People are really starting to recognise Panasonic for their heating and cooling solutions like never before in the UK. They really do put the effort in to make these market changes a positive experience. The Panasonic Service Cloud offers even more peace of mind and is free of charge, I know no other manufacturer in the UK that offers this kind of service.”

ECI Awards celebrate industry excellence in training and development
The 12th annual ECI Training and Development Awards honoured the very best of engineering construction talent at a prestigious ceremony last night in London.
The event, organised by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), brought together industry leaders, as well as the rising stars of tomorrow, for a celebration of excellence in training and development.
The ceremony recognised standout individuals, companies and training providers as awards were presented to winners across nine categories at what is now an established highlight in the engineering construction industry’s (ECI) calendar.
Held at One Marylebone, an iconic Grade I listed building in the heart of the capital, the event was hosted by Chair of the ECITB Innov8 Group Chinwe Odili, a STEM champion and award-winning structural engineer from Kent plc.

The theme of the awards was change and, in opening the event, ECITB Chief Executive Andrew Hockey spoke of the new Government’s commitment to skills and how the industry is changing as it plays its part in realising the country’s net zero goals.
He said: “The ECITB, as the industry’s employer-led training board, stands at the heart of these changes to support the skills needs of the workforce.
“With our collective desire, endeavour and expertise, exemplified by the exceptional talent gathered at the awards, we can tackle the challenges ahead and seize the opportunities to ensure our industry is well-placed for the future.
“The standard of nominees this year was again incredibly high, showcasing the great things happening in training and development across the industry.
“I would like to thank our judges and congratulate all the winners and finalists who are great examples of excellence in our industry.”
Recognising commitment to learning
The judging panel for the awards was made up of
Mark Fotheringham from Infinity Engineering, Tracey Shelley from BCECA and John Webster from Applus UK, who picked the overall winners based on the significant contributions they have made both to the ECI and their own organisations.

Among the winners on the night was Fluor Limited, which took home two awards for ED&I Initiative of the Year and the Leading Industry Safety accolade.
The ECI employer was recognised by the judges for its commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion “as a moral imperative”, alongside its aim to “innovate workplace safety”.
Michele Foreman, HR Director at Fluor, said: “We can’t believe we’ve won two. We were finalists last year but didn’t win, so this is just fantastic. We’re super excited and proud.
“To have had our ED&I initiatives recognised demonstrates the carefully curated initiatives we’ve run that are not just diverse, but truly inclusive and equitable. Safety is one of our core values and is an integral part of our DNA. Our teams are dedicated to making sure everyone stays safe.”
The ceremony also recognised ECI employers large and small that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to learning and development.
Wood was named Large Employer of the Year, while the Small/Medium Employer of the Year award went to
Wright Brothers Industrial Services Limited.
Training providers from both the UK and overseas were recognised for excellence in the delivery of ECITB-approved training, products and services, while the awards also honoured three outstanding individuals at the start of their careers.
Lynda Armstrong OBE, Chair of the ECITB Board, added: “I would like to congratulate everyone honoured and thank our generous sponsors who made the evening possible.
“The event is an opportunity to celebrate the best of the best within our industry. The individuals and organisations nominated exemplify the talent, innovation and endeavour that our industry needs.
“They remind us to continuously strive to raise the bar for excellence in training and development. And in this ever-evolving world, the importance of their contributions is clearer than ever.”
As well as each category being sponsored, the drinks and entertainment were sponsored by Bechtel and Kingsfield Academy respectively, while the dinner was sponsored by Hinkley Point C.
Philippa Burt, HR Director at Hinkley Point C, said: “Hinkley Point C is a catalyst for long-term growth in the engineering construction industry and will leave a legacy of a more skilled and productive workforce that gives the region, and the wider UK, a competitive edge as it delivers the UK’s ambitions for energy security and net zero.
“The huge team involved in building the power station understand the critical importance of training and development and we are delighted to play a small part in shining a spotlight on the outstanding work taking place in the sector by attendees at the awards.”
