This has been another fantastic year for the School of Medicine and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this success.

This Annual Newsletter is packed with examples of our achievements and I would like to highlight a few of them here.

Almost certainly our biggest achievement of the year is our success with bidding for additional medical student places, particularly the setting up of a new medical school with colleagues from the University of Lincoln, and also additional places in

Derby. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this initiative, but particularly Gill Pinner, Gill Doody and Vicky Mays who have worked incredibly hard and effectively to bring about this achievement. The new medical school will provide a foundation course aimed at widening access to medicine, and then mirror our BMedSci and BMBS degrees, with the School of Medicine taking responsibility for the clinical phases of the course. To read more about this new initiative, see pages 3-4.

Another exciting development is the setting up of the first bespoke undergraduate degree in the UK focusing on cancer (page 7). The new course is aimed at training the cancer researchers of the future, and we expect a strong intake when the course starts in September 2019. On another note, we are building healthcare capacity in China through the Nottingham Health China initiative, led

by Professor Richard Hubbard (page 6).

Several academic appointments have been made in China and areas of focus include systematic reviews, health economics, Big Data and MRI.

I would like to congratulate staff members who have been promoted, and staff and students who have won awards. I am particularly pleased that Gisli Jenkins has been awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship. This will provide a great opportunity to take forward his important work on pulmonary fibrosis with the aim of identifying better treatments for patients. It is also a good example of how the school and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust have worked together to support a high quality application. Have a look at Gisli’s ‘grant application top tips’ on page 12.

Evolution of a new medical school for England’s largest county The University of Lincoln (UoL) had been exploring the possibility of setting up a medical school for some time, and the local community had been canvassing local MPs to support this as Lincolnshire is the largest county in the country without its own medical school.

When the government announced its expansion of medical student places by 1,500 from 2018 over two years, University of Nottingham School of Medicine (UoN) was keen to take more students and expansion of Lincolnshire places was a good option for us. So the two institutions coming together to form a collaborative bid for a new school based in Lincoln was a natural evolution.

Project team A small project team was formed with Vicky Mays as project manager and Dr Gill Pinner as project director.

Having been awarded the additional student numbers in March 2018, the project rapidly expanded into an implementation phase to set up the new school, with a formal project board cochaired by Professor Libby John PVC College of Science, UoL and Professor Gill Doody Dean of Medical Education, UoN, and an Oversight and Governance Committee co-chaired by Professor Andrew Hunter Deputy Vice Chancellor, UoL, and Professor John Atherton ProVice-Chancellor Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UoN.

Challenges There have been a number of challenges along the way. Bringing together two very different organisations to work towards a shared goal has proved to be difficult at times. Negotiating the legal contract that would best serve the interests of both institutions and our future students was particularly complex. Those of us working for UoN are fortunate to have access to excellent in-house expert staff advice on issues such as law, finance and tax which helped us navigate those less familiar areas.

Good communication was key to developing the relationship between the two universities. We overcame difficulties caused by the geography and distance across the counties by ensuring constant communication by telephone and face-toface meetings. Fortunately there are good tram and train connections from QMC to Lincoln. We are now making much greater use of Skype and video conferencing and are installing more equipment in rooms in the medical school to help facilitate that.

The most memorable moment was of course winning the bid. We know now that 50% of the bids submitted were unsuccessful so it was a very proud and exciting moment for the whole team as well as the health community across Lincolnshire. All the hard work had paid off!

”

We have also had to work with the General Medical Council (GMC) to gain their approval to run the University of Nottingham medical programme at the new Lincoln Medical School.

We were delighted to hear on 20 July 2018 following the GMC site visit that they are happy for us to go ahead with our plans to take our first intake of 80 students onto our five-year programme at Lincoln

Teaching and Learning

Lessons learnt A lot of learning has taken place already during the project as there has obviously been a lot of expertise we have drawn on and many technical aspects to delivering the bid and the implementation so far; so it’s pretty hard to distil this down to just three lessons, but number one would be “communicate, communicate, communicate” – this is essential for building a relationship like this.

This is closely followed by “don’t forget to listen”! We have so much expertise at Nottingham – seek it out and ask for help. We have been overwhelmed with the amount of support and help we have received from all corners of the university.

This has been a true team effort and we are grateful for the people who have gone over and above their remit to offer time and assistance to help us progress. This also applies to our colleagues in Lincoln; it’s easy to think we are the experts in

medical schools but we are learning to listen to our counterparts in Lincoln.

Last would be “be prepared for hard work.” Unfortunately there are no short cuts and this has taken a huge amount of effort and hard work to get this far, but it has been enormously rewarding.

Winning partnership The combination of University of Nottingham, having a high quality, established medical programme, together with the University of Lincoln’s excellent track record in delivering excellent student experience, in particular attracting and supporting widening participation students made for a winning partnership.

The government’s drive to increase medical student places in remote, rural and coastal areas of the country meant we were well positioned to work with local NHS Trusts to improve the Lincolnshire health economy.

Why study at Lincoln?

So far we have held two Open Days to promote the Lincoln Medical School at the University of Lincoln campus. We have had a lot of interest from local sixthform students, from Lincolnshire and the immediate surrounding counties as well as from further afield.

Talking to parents and students the big attractions to come to study at Lincoln are that the size of the campus and cohort of students studying there will be much smaller than those choosing to study at Nottingham itself, while benefiting from gaining a degree from a well-established University and a tried and tested programme, which gives us an advantage over other newly formed medical schools. We are also able to offer the integrated BMedSci and entry to the six-year foundation course for those students who have lower social advantage with a reduced entry requirement.

barriers for Year 12 students to access work experience in primary care. In 2018, selected students accessed 100 regional placements with 30 practices and supporting University-based workshops, with professional practice contribution from Dr Gurvinder Sahota, GP and Associate Professor in Primary Care. Since 2016, 180 students have participated from 70 regional state schools.

E-mentoring support with WAMS medical students has been offered to all participants. A pilot partnership with Linc Higher and Brightside has enabled WAMS to offer a structured e-mentoring programme to Lincoln students this year.

A journey to medicine conference

in partnership with North Kesteven Academy, Lincolnshire, the University of Leicester and Medical Schools Council, took place in October 2017, building on the success of a teachers and careers advisors conference in June 2017. Ninety Year 12 students from 15 local schools gained admissions advice and guidance, interactive medical education workshops with student ambassadors and an inspirational keynote from our alumnus Dr Rob Cullum, Clinical Teaching Fellow, Lincoln County Hospital.

The University of Lincoln will join existing partners to deliver a progressive Year 12 conference at North Kesteven Academy on 17 October 2018.

GP work experience placement scheme has significantly reduced

is an online, student-led outreach programme designed to provide equality of opportunity for all schools and students to engage with NHS professionals. Led

by Mangorolla, the pilot events engaged nearly 900 students (Years 9-13) from 30 local schools with 22 primary healthcare professionals.

Proposals for a national expansion of this project are now under consideration by Health Education England.

School of Medicine Vice-Chancellor’s Medal winners Congratulations to Fady, Hisham and Zubair from the School of Medicine who were awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Medal on 5 July 2018 in recognition of their outstanding multiple achievements in their studies, voluntary work and contributions to student life and the University’s reputation.

Hisham AlAhawny, PhD student in Division of Medical Sciences and Graduate Entry Medicine Outstanding contribution to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion of university life; starting the PhD Peer Support Group; international student ambassador; President of the Egyptian Society in 2015/16; volunteering and public engagement activities.

Fady Anis, medical student

Awarded the Gold Student Leader Award by the SU; Winner of National Societies Awards for SCRUBS; representing at The Royal College of Surgeons; organised revision lectures and clinical skills workshops; helps aspiring students with

their university applications; weekly teaching of anatomy for peers.

Zubair Nizamudeen, PhD student in Division of Cancer and Stem Cells

Secured a first-authored scientific publication; accepted for poster presentation at Adult Neurogenesis 2018 Conference - also won the Official Meeting Reporter Prize; represented the University’s official dance teams and won multiple team-prize awards in competitions; represented UoN badminton team; Treasurer for Ramadan Committee - managing and organising funds for providing meals for staff and students during Ramadan.

Promising start for student-founded psychiatry mentoring scheme PsychStart, a career-based mentoring scheme for medical students interested in psychiatry, was co-founded in January 2018 by recent graduate Tom Hewson in his final-year and Dr Nikki Thomas.

More than 50 students have signed up to PsychStart to date, while plans are underway to introduce the scheme for students at the medical school in Newcastle, providing future opportunities for shared learning, collaboration and joint celebrations of excellent mentoring practice.

PsychStart enables students to be paired 1:1 or 2:1 with a local Registrar or Consultant Psychiatrist. The matching process is bespoke, with students being allocated mentors according to their specific subspecialty and other career interests (for example – in management, education or research).

Mentors span the full range of psychiatric sub-specialties from forensic to Child

and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), and include medical and clinical directors, academics and trainers, allowing us to cater for each student’s specific goals and preferences.

Each mentor-mentee relationship is unique.

Participants may provide or receive careers advice, organise shadowing opportunities, discuss interesting cases, complete audits and carry out research projects together.

All mentors and mentees must meet faceto-face at least twice a year and exchange regular emails. Surveys are sent out every three months to assess and monitor progress. In our three-month survey, 80% of students had met or made plans to meet their mentor since the initial training event.

A number of mentees had also started projects with their mentors, including audits and a textbook review, with five mentees presenting their work at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Medical Education Conference in May 2018.

Exposure to psychiatry The primary aim of the scheme is to inspire and encourage medical students seeking further exposure to psychiatry.

The scheme also aims to support students in their personal and professional development, future career planning and choices, whilst further integrating them into the local mental healthcare trusts and training and research facilities available within the East Midlands.

We hope to address the recruitment challenge and some of the stigma surrounding psychiatry, hopefully increasing the number and quality of applicants to core psychiatry training in the future.

The University of Nottingham Change Agents Team and Dr Pamela Hagan (University Senior Tutor) are helping to develop PsychStart further, after previously working with the co-founders to create a sustainable committee structure and protocol for the scheme.

International

Building health care capacity in China The Nottingham Health China initiative, led by Professor Richard Hubbard from the School of Medicine, is a research and training collaboration between the University of Nottingham UK, University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and health care providers in China. Its vision is to make Ningbo a centre of excellence for evidence-based health in China, and to reach out from this base to other provinces.

Timely initiative With increasing affluence and a shift towards a more western lifestyle the problem of chronic non-communicable disease has emerged as a major threat to public health in China. China has a high prevalence of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and COPD, and a rapidly increasing incidence of lung cancer and dementia. Against this backdrop, the Chinese government is trying to drive major changes in the health care system, with the introduction of cost-effective evidence-based clinical guidelines and increasing management of chronic disease in the community, rather than in the increasingly busy hospitals.

Raising awareness, fostering global links Global Engagement is a key aspect of the University’s Global Strategy 2020.

In the last year, we have had considerable interest from researchers and teachers at universities from Africa, Asia, Australia, North America and Europe who would like to collaborate with us.

Relevant staff within our school were alerted to these advances and have been encouraged and supported to explore these opportunities further. Some of these international collaborations may

to the major hospitals in Ningbo, including the main centre for general practitioner training, and also to local government and the Centre for Disease Control (Public Health). Within this framework we have identified that the routinely collected clinical data in Ningbo is amongst the most joined-up and detailed in China.

Building capacity Based at our campus in Ningbo we have appointed two Professors of Health Economics, and also a Professor and Assistant Professor in Computer Science with an interest in the health care arena.

We have also established a new GRADE centre in Ningbo – only the second in China – to allow us to translate our work on clinical evidence and health economics into local and national clinical guidelines.

Close links with the International Office and the Office of Global Engagement has provided us with opportunities to understand which geographical areas and overseas universities we should focus on both in relation to increasing our overseas student numbers, but also where synergies lie in relation to research.

University’s recently-published Asia Expertise Guide nottingham.ac.uk/news/ asia-expertise – to enable more colleagues to get involved in international research, and to continue to explore opportunities with industry partners and organisations like HealthcareUK. The Faculty recently appointed two Faculty Global Engagement Leads – Professor Nigel Mongan for Research and Knowledge Exchange and Professor Susan Anderson for Education and Student Experience. In order to reflect this split between research and education, we are seeking to appoint an additional Global Engagement Lead to cover Education and Student Experience.

As always, I am keen to hear from colleagues about their aspirations, successes and challenges in relation to making research and teaching links internationally, and I am here to help facilitate the development of these links.

New course to train future cancer researchers The School of Medicine will be offering a new three-year BSc in Cancer Sciences and a four-year MSci from September 2019.

The course has been developed as there is currently no bespoke undergraduate degree in the UK that focuses only on cancer. The course will offer a combination of traditional lectures, practical training and tutorials with problem-oriented learning and skills workshops and a strong research core running through the programme. It will give students a deep understanding of the causes of cancer and the molecular basis of new and established cancer treatments.

In developing this new degree we consulted with the pharmaceutical industry which identified a shortfall in appropriately trained scientists to work in areas associated with cancer science.

Graduates from this degree will be the researchers of the future, equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to understand the disease from its basic biology through to the translation of research into new therapeutics. It will enable them to pursue a range of careers in industry and academia such as cancer research, the management of clinical trials, or science communication.

Course promotion

We are promoting the course through the University’s online prospectus course and have also invested in a digital campaign that targets social media platforms such as Facebook, the Complete University Guide and the Student Room. We are participating in the University Open Days in June and September, the Nottingham Potential and Sutton Trust Summer Schools in July and are also considering offering degree apprenticeships.

At the Open Days the location of our stand close to those of the Medicine and Medical Physiology and Therapeutics degrees and courses offered by the School of Health Sciences was helpful in raising awareness of our course, and we spoke to many students who expressed interest in it. We had industry representatives on the stand, from Bristol Myers Squibb and

Sven Hellerstrom Memorial Lecture Professor Hywel Williams (Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology) was invited to deliver the Sven Hellerstrom Memorial Lecture and received a medal by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden in recognition of his outstanding contributions to dermatology research.

20 Years of Cochrane Skin In September 2017, the editorial base for Cochrane Skin, which resides within the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology, celebrated 20 years of producing systematic reviews to improve the treatment of skin diseases.

Dr Robert Grayson Award Dr Jason Appleton (Clinical Neuroscience) won the 2017 Dr Robert Grayson Award at the British and Irish Hypertension Society Annual Scientific Meeting in September.

Tony Mitchell Memorial Medal Professor Roger Bayston (Rheumatology, Orthopaedics & Dermatology) delivered the Tony Mitchell Memorial Lecture to the Nottingham Medico Chirurgical Society. His lecture was entitled “‘Harmless’ Bacteria and the trouble they cause”. He was awarded the Tony Mitchell Memorial Medal.

May 2018 University Tri-Campus Postgraduate Prize 2017/18 James Blackwell (Medical Sciences & Graduate Entry Medicine) was awarded the Ian Tomlin Postgraduate Prize for 2017/18 in recognition of the progress he has made with his research and his contribution to the postgraduate community.

President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists Professor Ravi Mahajan (Clinical Neuroscience) was elected President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He takes up post in September 2018.

NHS70 Excellence in Primary Care Award Researchers in the Division of Primary Care were voted Regional Champions in The Excellence in Primary Care Award category of the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards and were shortlisted for the national award.

Led by Professor Tony Avery, the Medicine Safety Research Group were nominated for making safety improvements to the way medicines have been prescribed by GPs over the past 20 years.

Alzheimer’s Society awards Emma Broome (Psychiatry & Applied Psychology) was runner-up in the Alzheimer’s Society Rising Stars Award. Dr Deborah Oliveira (Psychiatry & Applied Psychology) received a commendation from the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Research Leaders 2018 award.

The year in review 2017/18 Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Dr Joanne Morling (Epidemiology & Public Health) was appointed as the Director of the Eastern Hub of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy Professor Sarah Lewis (Epidemiology & Public Health) was named as Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Sarah was particularly commended for her appreciation of how the wider Higher Education context affects her learners.

Official Chinese translation of dermatology textbook Considered by many to be essential reading, the book Evidence Based Dermatology, now in its third volume, was fully translated into Chinese – thanks to over 40 Chinese dermatologists – in a project led by Professor Yuping Ran of Sichuan University, China.

BMJ Awards 2018 The paediatric dermatology team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust was highly commended in The BMJ Awards 2018. The team included Dr Jane Ravenscroft and Professor Hywel Williams (Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology).

CBTDDC Workshop Over 50 delegates attended the Children’s Brain Tumour Drug Delivery Consortium (CBTDDC) Workshop on Drug Delivery to the Brain to develop new research collaborations and explore potential grant proposals with a view to advancing translational research into drug delivery to the brain.

Stroke Association Keynote Lecture Professor Marion Walker (Rehabilitation & Ageing) delivered the Stroke Association 2018 Keynote Lecture on “Living life well: Rehabilitation matters”.

Primary Care Trent Valley Way Walk Professor Denise Kendrick, Dr Liz Orton and Dr Sue Cooper (Primary Care) walked from Nottingham Embankment to Newark Castle to raise funds for the new Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre. To date they have raised over £12,000 for the Centre and the research it supports.

NIHR Divisional Lead for Cancer (East Midlands) Professor Srinivasan Madhusudan (Cancer & Stem Cells) was appointed as the Nottingham expert appointed as the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Divisional Lead for Cancer (East Midlands).

Best e-Poster award for stroke researcher Dr Jason Appleton (Clinical Neuroscience) won the Best e-Poster award for his study “The effect of transdermal glyceryl trinitrate in acute stroke patients with carotid stenosis: data from the Efficacy of Nitric Oxide in Stroke trial” at the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) in Sweden.

Best Poster Award for MS rehabilitation researchers Jacqueline Mhizha-Murira and Olga Klein (Rehabilitation & Ageing) won the Best Poster Award for the study poster entitled “Implementing Cognitive Rehabilitation for people with Multiple Sclerosis: Bridging the gap between research and clinical practice” at the European Rehabilitation in Multiple Sclerosis Conference.

July 2018 Cancer Research UK Fellowship Dr Leah Jayes (Epidemiology & Public Health) was awarded a three-year Cancer Research UK Fellowship which will focus on conducting research to prevent relapse to smoking among prisoners after release.

Distinction award at SAPC Dr Yana Vinogradova (Primary Care) was awarded one of two papers of distinction places at the 47th Annual Scientific Meeting of the SAPC (Society for Academic Primary Care), hosted by Queen Mary University London at the Barbican Centre. Yana’s abstract was called “Use of hormone replacement therapy and risk of venous thromboembolism.”

NIHR PPI Senior Leadership Team Professor Tony Avery (Primary Care) was appointed as a member of the NIHR PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) Senior Leadership Team, which is chaired by the NIHR National Director for Patients and the Public in Research.

NCTU takes over hosting of UK Trial Managers’ Network (UKTMN) The Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit took over from the University of Oxford as host of the UK Trial Managers’ Network (UKTMN), which is a well-established network of over 1000 professionals working in clinical trial management across the UK. A108 Medicine with a Foundation Year celebrates graduation of first cohort The school celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of the A108 Six-year Medicine with a Foundation Year programme in July.

Seven of the 11 students of the first cohort achieved the BMBS with the others to follow in later cohorts.

Prestigious dermatology key note lecture Professor Hywel Williams (Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology) delivered the Arthur Rook Oration on ‘Reducing waste in dermatology research’ at the 98th Annual Meeting of the British Association of Dermatologists.

Best Oral Paper Dr Tim Ritzmann (CBTRC) won the Best Oral Paper prize at the Nottingham Paediatric Research Showcase Conference 2018.

SARS President Professor Dileep Lobo (NDDC) will serve as President-elect of the Society of Academic and Research Surgery (SARS) in 2019-20 and as President in 2021-22.

Lord Dearing Awards 2018 Dr Kim Edwards and Tim Coughlin (Rheumatology, Orthopaedics & Dermatology) received Lord Dearing Awards for their contributions in creating a learning environment which is nurturing as well as challenging, creative and innovative.

Appointment at UNMC Professor Deborah Hall (Clinical Neuroscience) took up her new role as Vice-Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, where she is seconded until June 2022.

Research

New research leadership The School of Medicine recently appointed two new Co-Directors of Research: David Bates (Professor of Cancer Biology) and Kim Thomas (Professor of Applied Dermatology Research).

Having two Directors of Research, each with different strengths and abilities, provides a unique opportunity for the school to meet its ambitious research targets.

Since their appointment in March 2018, Dave and Kim have been busy getting to know people around the school and trying to understand the main barriers and enablers for engagement in research. These first few months have been a particularly busy time as their appointment coincided with preparation for the school’s External Research Review, which took place in June 2018. Whilst this was a little daunting at first, having a review so quickly after appointment was in fact perfect timing, as it meant that huge amounts of data and qualitative feedback were available to inform future planning.

It also means that our future research strategy for the school can be built around the recommendations that emerge from the expert panel – results of which should be available in Autumn 2018.

Divisional Research Champions Over recent months, Dave and Kim have reconstituted the Research Committee so that each division has a research champion who can represent the division’s interests in the school (the Divisional Research Lead), and act as a point of communication for the school and the division on research matters.

Research

First University of Nottingham academic to be awarded prestigious NIHR Research Professorship Gisli Jenkins, Professor of Experimental Medicine in the Division of Respiratory Medicine, this year became the first University of Nottingham academic to be awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship.

The five-year, £1.7m award recognises his pioneering work in understanding pathogenic mechanisms to enable and deliver novel therapeutic strategies for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a progressive lung disease with a worse outcome than most cancers.

I am so excited about receiving this award because it will enable a step change in translating my groups’ understanding of disease biology into better therapeutic strategies for patients with pulmonary fibrosis.

This award will allow time and resource for his group to develop our understanding of molecular and cell-specific pathways to identify markers of disease activity that can be used to personalize therapy for patients who are likely to benefit from treatment regardless of why or when they get fibrosis, Professor Jenkins said.

“In short it will enable us to treat the right patient, with the right drug at the right time,” he said.

His success also bears testament to the support and “invaluable feedback” provided by the School of Medicine.

2. S trike while the iron is hot. If you publish a high impact output do not sit back and bask in the glory. Write a grant to take the work forward.

Road to success The call had a deadline just short of two months but I was aware it was approaching and had some ideas based on prior grants that had been submitted. I took advice from the school as whether they thought I would fit the call, because the last thing I wanted to do was invest two months preparing an application that was doomed to fail.

The school was extremely helpful, particularly Manjeet Mundey and Tony Avery. Due to the collaborative nature of the proposal between the University and the NHS Trust there was a lot of co-ordination between the relevant contacts required. Manjeet arranged meetings with all the key staff at both institutions. Similarly institutional support in terms of added value to the NIHR Professorship was extremely important to demonstrate host centre commitment to the proposal.

1. Failure is the bedrock of success. Do not be disheartened by prior rejections. Use the comments to improve the next submission. The more shots on goal, the more chance of success.

Tony, along with Jonathan Hardman, were able to corral the support required to ensure likely success.

Manjeet and Tony reviewed the application numerous times, giving sound advice and strategic direction to aspects of the proposal and offered words of support when the going got tough. The interview required considerable preparation and Manjeet was extremely helpful in forwarding my application to key people and arranging the interview.

The feedback was invaluable and helped me improve presentation considerably. This was crucial because despite considerable experience in giving presentations, I have never had an audience that has been responsible for this level of funding!

3. Read the instructions. Most calls have specific issues that need to be addressed. Avoid the temptation to cut and paste from the last application.

4. Give yourself time. Develop your idea early, get costings done early, get peer review early. The last two weeks before the deadline should be refinement.

5. Get internal peer review. Get as many people to read the proposal as possible. The more critical they are the better. The more flaws found before submission, the less reviewers are likely to find after submission.

6. Recruit appropriate experts. No matter how brilliant you are there will be areas in which you need help to deliver a complex project. Approach people with the expertise you need and ask if they would be willing to help.

7. Prepare, prepare, prepare. If you have an interview get the slide deck reviewed and convene at least one mock interview. Populate with interviewers prepared to be hostile. Get people to look over the application and highlight the weaknesses. Practice your pitch, until you can do it in your sleep.

Q&A with the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England Jonathan Van-Tam MBE, Professor of Health Protection at the School of Medicine, was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England by the Department of Health. The world-leading epidemiologist took up the role from 2 October 2017.

Q

What have you been busy with since taking up your post as Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England?

A . My role as one of two DCMOs is to give senior medical advice and oversight to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) on Health Protection. This means anything connected to policy on communicable disease control including; vaccination, and chemical, biological and radiation hazards.

I also play a central role in the Emergency Preparedness and Response functions whilst the other DCMO (Professor Gina Radford) looks after Health Improvement.

One of the attractions of the new role was having a central policy-related input into influenza prevention and control; so it has come as no surprise to me that a lot of my time so far has been taken up with oversight of the response to seasonal influenza in winter 2017, refining the UK’s preparedness and response arrangements for pandemic influenza, and introducing improved vaccines for seasonal influenza in the elderly and at-risk patients which will be used for the first time in the U.K. in October 2018.

I’ve also been involved in the response to the Novichok attacks in Salisbury and Amesbury. I have quite a lot of interaction with our Ministers and this is very stimulating. All in all, it’s a really busy, varied, and demanding role.

Q

How does your new work fit into your research and teaching roles at Nottingham?

A . I retain one day per week in Nottingham. This has to be managed somewhat flexibly; however I am managing to continue to supervise two PhD students, one MPhil student and

keep on with quite a bit of academic writing (I have quite a back-log of papers to complete). I am also managing to help other groups bidding for new grants on influenza, and helping Dr Louise Lansbury and Professor Wei Shen Lim keep things moving for the WHO Collaborating Centre on pandemic influenza, and the Biomedical Research Centre subgroup on Acute Respiratory Infections. It’s enough for one day per week!

Q

What motivates you, personally and professionally?

A . Ooh, that’s a tougher question. It’s really a combination of many factors: making a difference; doing work that feels (and is) important - work that is ‘mission critical’; work which involves the bigger picture - doing the right thing across the whole system. Leadership.

I hugely enjoy work at the interface between systems; my current role is one where medical practice meets science and where both meet politics!

Q

How do you manage work-life balance?

A . I am fiercely protective of time with my family – but they are very understanding too that work in the new role can be fullon for several days or weeks at a time and without warning and that the country has to come first on those occasions.

Running is my go-to rebalancing therapy.

It can be done almost anywhere – whenever possible I build it into my daily commute by jogging from Kings Cross to Whitehall. The DHSC team are brilliantly understanding that it is a long commute for me, that it is a very intense job; there are sometimes opportunities to work from home and of course I take these. Boston United Football Club is a great release on a Saturday afternoon, and as a season ticket holder I go to every game that I can.

Q

You grew up in Lincolnshire—any thoughts about our new medical school in Lincoln?

A . I am hugely supportive of a Medical School for my home county of Lincolnshire – I also worked as a junior doctor in Lincoln and Grantham – it’s been needed for a long time. I’d love a senior role there one day, but that’s in the future. Hopefully in time the new school can become fully independent and cover the clinical years too.

Q

You are a graduate of Nottingham. Do you have any top tips/advice to share with our current and prospective medical students?

A . I once spoke to a consultant in Emergency Medicine. I was a junior doctor at the time. He was telling me about his kids. I asked if he wanted them to follow him into medicine. “No” he said.

“I have told them that they should choose whatever trade or profession they want; but that whatever it is they must try to be the best there is.”

That stuck with me. So my advice to current and prospective medical students is this: first know yourself and the kind of work within medicine that makes you tick, that will give you maximum satisfaction. Then whatever it is – and it does not matter what that is – try to be the very best at it.

My career has taken me through Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, Anaesthesia, Infectious Diseases, Public Health, Pharmaceutical Medicine, and academia. Don’t rush it - you have at least 40 year’s work ahead! If it takes time to work out what it is that will suit you longer term, that is OK and time well spent.

Inspiring personal and professional staff development Over 130 members of APM and TS staff working across the School of Medicine attended a one-day conference held at the Trent Building on University Park on 26 June 2018.

It was heartening to see staff well represented from both job families and from across our varying campuses and research divisions and groups.

The aims of the day were to provide tailored training and development opportunities not readily available via the University’s Short Courses and to give staff who do not meet regularly the chance to network. The programme for the day was developed in response to feedback from a similar event held in 2016 and a staff survey undertaken to help plan the event.

The conference began with a wellreceived introduction and Q&A session from John Alcolado and Jane Watson.

Parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon, supported by staff from across the University, covered a variety of professional and personal development themes. These included PDPR and regrading, finance, career development, coaching, CV and interview techniques, lab management skills and the Human Tissue Act. New to the event was the addition of a key-note speaker Carol Steed, Leadership and Management Director from HR, who delivered an engaging presentation reflecting on her personal experiences of career development. A variety of drop-in stands including HR, David Ross Sports Centre and Counselling were available over lunch in addition to optional social activities such as self-defence, Pilates and a campus walk at the end of the day.

Feedback Feedback from the day was really positive with over 85% of those who attended indicating that they found the day extremely or very useful with sessions on CV and interview skills, RIS, finance, career development, PDPR and re-grading and lab management skills proving particularly popular.

New initiative to support women in medicine and science in the school The WiMS Network aims to complement existing University resources such as the Women’s Network by providing guidance and networking opportunities specifically designed to support the career development of women working within academic medicine and medical research. One of the key ways in which this is achieved is through hosting a variety of interesting, informative events focused upon issues and topics relevant to women.

Inaugural event The inaugural WiMS Network event was held on 14 June 2018 at the Orchard Hotel, University Park, with 22 Research and Teaching staff attending the Speed Networking Lunch. They heard five influential and successful women from across the University talk about getting fellowships and funding, becoming a leader, media exposure, managing worklife balance, and Athena Swan.

The event was a huge success. Attendees reported knowing more about all five topics after the event and 90% of respondents agreed that the event had supported their career development.

The next WiMS network event will be held on 12 September 2018. Chris Lake, Managing Director of Integrated Development, will deliver a presentation and informal networking session focused upon Imposter Syndrome. This lunchtime event will discuss how women can make interventions in their patterns, behaviours, choices and careers to overcome complex and inhibitory feelings of imposter syndrome.

appointed as the Lead for EDI in the School of Medicine in July 2018 and this will be a three year post.

Dr Nia Wyn Jones, Clinical Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, is the new lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Medicine. She talks about her role below.

The over-riding goal is to embed EDI activity in all that we do. This role specifically aims to drive forward and promote EDI activity within the school for all nine protected characteristics and embed good practice amongst all school staff. I have been involved in EDI activities through membership of the Career Development and Equity Committee (CDEC) for the past few years and was part of the self-assessment team that delivered the School of Medicine Athena Swan Silver Award in 2015. I have been

The role will include several facets including: ■■ Working with the Career Development and Equity Committee (CDEC) to support work around gender and intersectionality through the Athena SWAN agenda.

■■ Champion and promote EDI within the school and across the Faculty and University.

■■ Work with other key stakeholders across the School to determine EDI strategy/ formulate policy for the School.

■■ Ensure staff training and development is organised and delivered to make sure staff are supported in embedding EDI in their everyday activities.

■■ Represent the School of Medicine on FEDIG (Faculty Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group) and contribute to the agenda and work of the FEDIG to support work to meet University EDI objectives.
