Julie Ryan (UoG, Combined Studies, 2006 and Staff) As a former University of Gloucestershire student, I am writing to tell you about a book I have just published, 'In and out of the Lion's Den: poverty, war and football'. Essentially, it tells the story of my father, who survived poverty and polio to become a professional footballer at Millwall, Brighton and Gillingham in the 1950s. Overall, the book shows how stories connected to sport can open windows onto other aspects of life and demonstrate how the family is a vivid, and often unexpected, way of accessing history. The book is available on Amazon.co.uk
