2016-17 ABS MIXER September 13, 2016
The Asoociation of Black Students Mixer was put on by the ABS executive board for members to learn what was planned for the school year, to mix and mingle with other students, and to learn a little bit more about the organization. The event took place September 13, 2016 and was from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Light refreshments were served in addition to fun and games! We had a great turnout! ABS Vice-President of Programming, Alieshia Nunally said, “It was great seeing so many students who were interested in the plans the executive board had for the school year! Thanks for coming out!�
FOR THE LOVE OF HARRIETT October 7, 2016
For the Love of Harriett is an annual Breast Cancer Awareness Activity Fair. This event was hosted along with Collegiate 100, Black Student Nurses Association, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and Empowering Ladies Together. The event took place in the Red Barn on October 7, 2016 from 12:00 -2:00 PM. Informational booths were set up on Breast Cancer. The event showed just how much can be done when we partner with organizations! We appreciate those who participated!
CANDLELIGHT VIGIL & “DIE�-IN September 29, 2016
This was two separate events hosted and put on by members of the Association of Black Students in response to police brutality. The Candlelight Vigil took place at Grawemeyer Hall in front of the Thinker Statue. Students were each given a lit candle and the floor was open for anyone who wanted to express their thoughts and feelings. It was truly a powerful event. The next Thursday, September
29, 2016, “Die”-in for Black Lives was held in front of the Student Activities Center. Students were given names of victims and layed on the ground to be visual representations. The event took place 11:45 PM and lasted about two hours. We are proud of the efforts our students put into seeing social justice.
CARDINAL KICKBACK September 29, 2016
We did it! We made history this year! The 2016 UofL Homecoming King and Queen, Jordan Potts and Keturah Smith, were one of the few black pairs to win BOTH crowns in university history. Prior to the game, the Association of Black Students put on a Kickback for students to socialize and play games. Thanks to everyone for coming out and for putting your votes to use! We couldn’t be more proud!

LET’S TALK: POLITICS November 1, 2016
The Association of Black Students was proud to host the Let’s Talk: POLITICS forum in collaboration with the Society of Porter Scholars. Held in the Chao auditorium this event came at a crucial moment in United States’ history – the 2016 Presidential election. Some of
your favorite Pan-African studies professors discussed relevant issues such as cultural identies in America and how they influenced the vote, what the choice in Presidential candidates stated about America, and what actions we could and should take in the future.

The Black Image Awards was ABS’s culminating event for our Black Magic Week. The e-board was impressed by all of the nominees! Our members our doing great things on campus and in the communith. ABS SERVES THE COMMUNITY March 18, 2017
service event, The Association of Black Students partnered with Louisville Grows to plant trees in western Louisville. It was wonderful to take hands-on action with tangible results in our community. We look forward to performing more community service with this organization in the future!
HARLEM NIGHTS April 19, 2017
In this annual event, ABS gives its members an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of the Harlem Renaissance with a night of free food, music, and entertainment. Volunteers acted out characters from this great period in the live museum section of th event as guest interacted with the. Halfway through the sparkling night, the ABS 2017-2018 e-board was introduced. Finally, music was provided by Louisville’s “Shed Squad” who reminded us, “It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got the swing!”
BBQ CLASSIC: FAMILY REUNION EDITION April 25, 2017
For our final event, the Association of Black Students hosted a barbecue by the outside West Lawn on spring semester reading day. Volunteers and past and current officers served and gave out free ABS items for the summer and next year including shirts, water bottles, and backpacks. We had a great turnout and we are sure our students did well on their finals! With the 2016-2017 school year completed, we would like to thank all of our members for their participation. Keep in touch next year!
