Our words of wisdom Being a Cardinal means being part of a family, and our Cardinal Family has some words to live by. The Cardinal Principles are guidelines that shape our community and our actions. They help us defne who we are, what we believe and why being here means something.

C A R D Let us be a university that is a COMMUNITY OF CARE. Care for self, care for one another as the Cardinal Family and care for the community beyond. We are a community — not just a collection of individuals. We are a community — not just buildings connected by an HVAC system.

6

ACCOUNTABILITY. We keep our promises. We own mistakes. We are accountable to the team.

RESPECT, irrespective of position. We respect each other’s humanity and dignity, no matter what our positions in the organization are. We also respect our right to difering and conficting positions on issues. We will be a place that prepares students for ideas, not protects students from ideas.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION. We celebrate diversity of thought, perspectives and life experiences. As our state motto declares: United We Stand, Divided We Fall. We want everyone, in the richness of all of their many unique and intersecting identities, to feel included in the Cardinal fold.

I INTEGRITY AND TRANSPARENCY. We will be true to our mission of an urban research university to create, disseminate and apply knowledge. Integrity is our collective commitment to make decisions with the best interests of our university in mind and to share the decision-making rationale and outcomes.

N A L NOBLE PURPOSE. Each of us will identify for ourselves the way in which we make a diference. We must solve the problems of access and afordability to give everyone the opportunity to fnd and pursue their own noble purpose.

AGILITY. We will recognize that things change and when they do, we must change things. We know when adaptation in an organization does not keep pace with adaptation in the environment, the organization will not survive.

LEADERSHIP. We recognize management is a position but leadership is an activity. We will all behave as owners of the University of Louisville because we are. “ We are UofL” is not just a hashtag or a slogan. It is our declaration of leadership and ownership.

Learning your way What makes Cardinals special is how diferent we all are. We have world-class faculty ready to inspire you in every classroom, but every classroom isn’t the same. We provide diferent types of learning for wherever you are on your academic journey.

CLASS STYLE Most of our class sizes are small, meaning you’ll get plenty of face-toface time with your professors. But we also like variety. Students can experience interactive, discussionbased activities in intimate classroom settings, or the positive challenges of large, lecture-style classes. Feel more comfortable learning at home? We have a variety of online courses and degree programs available to complement our on-campus oferings.

STUDY ABROAD We love Louisville, but we also want our students to see the world. Through our International Service Learning Program, students have broadened

their worldview and made a global impact with trips to countries like Croatia, Philippines, Ghana and more.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES We’re one of the fastest-growing research universities in the nation, and your innovation can begin as soon as you set foot on campus. Undergraduate students get to work side by side with some of the best researchers in the country to tackle our world’s grand challenges. UofL is designated a “Research 1” doctoral university by the Carnegie Classifcation of Institutions of Higher Education.

Looking to challenge yourself? Each year, about 500 freshmen join UofL’s Honors Program. With smaller class sizes, international travel, dedicated advisors, professional mentors, an exclusive living-learning community in a suite-style residence hall and early registration, the Honors Program gives students the intimacy of a small college combined with the vast resources of a national research institution. Honors course topics in past years have ranged from global issues like climate change or activism and advocacy, to a deep dive into the Ohio River or Sherlock Holmes. Our Honors students also like to give back. Each year, the Honors Student Council hosts a Book and Media Sale with proceeds going to local non-proft organizations. Over the past seven years, the council has raised more than $80,000 for charity. Find out more at louisville.edu/honors.

Service with a purpose At UofL, serving our community isn’t just an activity – it’s one of our Cardinal Principles. Our university is a Community of Care, and we dedicate ourselves to making a diference. We do it through building Habitat for Humanity houses or developing programs to increase teacher diversity in local schools. We do it through providing health care to low-income Kentuckians and through striving for social change. We do it through dance marathons and green initiatives. Our work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The University of Louisville has earned recognition as a “Research 1” university and a “Community Engaged” university by the Carnegie Foundation. Of more than 4,000 universities in the country, UofL is one of only 69 that can claim both distinctions.

14

Changing lives together Cardinals are world-changers, tackling challenges from global health to social justice. Throughout the COVID -19 pandemic, Cardinals stepped up to serve – in hospitals working with patients, in research labs studying the virus and at home making masks and delivering food to those in need. At UofL, diversity and inclusion are not just words, they are at the core of our being. We believe every person has the right to excel and we do not shy from fghting for social justice. UofL has pledged to be a premier antiracist metropolitan university and is dedicated to ensuring everyone has the ability to earn a college degree and feels respected and valued on campus.

15

Life as a Cardinal Whatever you’re into, chances are UofL has a group for it. We ofer close to 450 registered student organizations including Greek Life, academic groups, faithbased organizations, social clubs and cultural organizations. Our Big Three – The Student Government Association, Student Activities Board and Engage, Lead Serve Board – are charged with cultivating the campus experience for students through events ranging from cookouts to concerts. If there’s not an organization that fts you, start one! We support your initiative.

ATHLETICS C-A- R-D -S CARDS! That ’s our cheer, so get ready to hear a lot of it – we have 23 men’s and women’s athletic teams to support, and countless conference and national championships under our belt. We get to experience fandom on the big stage as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and students can attend most home games for free with your student ID. Football and men’s basketball student tickets are available for only $10 per month thanks to the “ Flight 23” student ticket membership program.

STUDENTS LIVE ON CAMPUS AND IN AFFILIATE HOUSING

CAMPUS HOUSING UofL’s residence halls and afliated housing options are home to more than 5,000 students from across the globe. UofL guarantees housing for freshman and sophomores, who get the chance to live at the epicenter of a vibrant student experience.

We know what you’re thinking - what is an LLC and why do I want to live there? Living-learning communities (LLC) are residential programs designed for you to fnd your people. Groups of students sharing common academic goals are housed together for an extra sense of connection. We also have themed communities (TC) for non-academic interests.

Between traditional halls, suites and apartments – all with modern amenities – there are plenty of places to lay your head down after a long day of classes and activities. Plus, each hall ofers student programs and events aimed to keep you involved, informed and engaged. In fall 2021, we opened Belknap Residence Hall. Located next to the Red Barn in the center of all the activity, the new hall features traditional-style rooms, laundry, private study rooms, social areas, a game room and more. And because our SGA and Residence Hall Association were highly involved in the planning process, the new hall was largely designed by students for students. As an extra bonus, we’re adding a second brand-new residence hall with similar features right next door in fall 2022.

UofL has 19 LLC or TC options to enhance your educational experience, including Global Village, Ethics and First- Generation Cardinals. Students who live in these communities take classes with their LLC/TC peers and get access to academic and staf support, leadership opportunities and other resources tailor-made to their interests.

Settle in at louisville.edu/housing.

DINING We also have more than 20 on-campus dining options so you won’t go hungry. Get your cafeine fx at Starbucks, grab some Panda Express or go for all-you-care-to-eat at the Ville Grille. Our dining establishments ofer plenty of healthy options and will work with you on special dietary needs. All students living on campus are assigned a meal plan that you’re welcome to upgrade at anytime.
