Roof top tents would have to be one of the most lusted after accessories in the four-wheel drive industry. Once you spend a night up high over your vehicle away from the reality of damp campgrounds, insects and perhaps larger creepy-crawlies, it is hard to go back to a conventional tent. But they are not without their flaws. Are you prepared to pack up the tent each time you need to drive your vehicle? Are you happy to lug around a giant box on your roof? Does the reality of never fitting into a shopping centre car park excite rather than terrify you? If so, roof top tents are for you! So once you know you want a roof-topper, what are your options when it comes to picking the right one? Here is our take on the best roof top tents on the market that could be yours.

ARB SIMPSON III

The Simpson III is the biggest roof top tent in the ARB range, and it’s manufactured from poly cotton fabric with an Oxford polyester flysheet as well. ARB claims the big feature with the Simpson III is just how quick and easy it is to set up and pack down. Internal storage pockets provide safe locations for personal items such as phones or keys, and a solid, retractable aluminium ladder is included for tent access. A major complaint with some roof top tents is the quality of the supplied travel cover that can fall to bits after a few hours on the highway. ARB supplies a laminated PVC cover that is also UV stabilised, which protects the tent and your belongings during transport and storage. An optional annexe is also available if you need more room or protection from the elements. Price $1,549
