I do know that not all will like my story, a thirteen-year-old girl who read my first three chapters, (not knowing that I had written it), said animatedly that she, "loved it and would definitely buy the book!" This is what motivates me to publish. And so, here I am at the beginning of the journey to self-publication. Recently inspired by the success story of a self-published author living nearby to me, who has just sold rights to Netflix for one of his books. I have a degree in Marketing and Advertising, which is already standing in good stead, enabling me to know the importance of the promotional process. I have also had a conversation with a friend who is a professional marketer also embarking on the world of self-published authors, which was very motivational. Friends and family are so supportive – when I told my Dad that I was going to publish independently, he proudly said, “you better get writing Book Two then.” Never have I been more motivated – having this wave of support behind me. The book is currently going through another edit by myself, just to check through use of language and so on. Then I have my editor, who is all ready to go on the final edit where they will look at ensuring that core themes and character motives are remaining throughout. In the last year I have realised how important your editor is in the process of writing, not only are they there to champion your idea, but they are also another pair of eyes into your story, looking at everything from a different angle, ensuring that you have been true to it to the end. When writing, you can get so lost and caught up in the minutiae or the huge plot goals that you have, your editor makes sure that you stick the back bone of your story and the integrity of your characters. If you are looking to self-publish, invest in an editor. Designing my front cover will be quite straightforward as I can use graphic design software, this will be created whilst my editor is working on my book so that this is ready to go. There are key milestones from here until publication date, there are both promotional and writing ones, which includes starting Book Two. I will be using Amazon to self-publish which is a new platform for me and so I will be investigating this to ensure that I get it right. I look forward to the next few months of work and preparation to make my dream a reality. Most importantly, I will finally be able to share my story with the rest of the world and I can't wait for the next step of this adventure.
