The cover and many of the pictures in this edition of UNLV in Asia depict the happiest day of our academic calendar- Commencement. However, the real import of Commencement is just that- commencing the journey into the next phase of life. Our graduates begin their journey with a distinction unique in the world. They are and will forever be UNLV Rebels. Every year, the Singapore Commencement Ceremony features a group of new graduates crowded around a table manned by the UNLV Alumni Club in Singapore. I hope that all of them have or will take up the privilege that they have earned to join this exclusive group, open only to Rebels. The Club is the official affiliate of the UNLV Alumni Association here in Singapore. As more graduates join, we can look forward to more member benefits and a structure for the Rebel network that will benefit Singapore graduates in the hospitality industry in Asia and the world, just as it has benefited Las Vegas graduates for fifty years. The UNLV Alumni Club is a member directed and managed membership organization. It will only succeed with the active participation of many graduates and UNLV Singapore is committed to advancing the Club in these early days, for the benefit of our life-long Rebels for many years to come.

WELCOME

I would first like to congratulate our newly elected student government officers – President Gordan Tan, Vice-President Clarence Kong and Secretary Treasurer Joe Tay. I have met with them and they have some wonderful ideas. Based upon their conversation with the student club presidents it appears as if there will be some robust programming in both the fall and the spring. Please take advantage of these opportunities. We have made it a point to create memorable experiences. There are two very important events coming up in the not too distant future. The Graduation ceremony will bring some important people from Las Vegas including our Dean Stowe Shoemaker. He had a great time last year and looks forward to returning to Singapore. In closing, I am very excited to invite everyone to a gathering the night before Graduation on January 9th in the Student Union. The Dean’s Reception will be our way of thanking industry, government, alumni and our educational partners in Singapore. By the time we leave we will have conferred 917 UNLV/SIT degrees. Undoubtedly, many will be the future leaders of the hospitality industry in this part of the world. This event will take place from 6-9pm.

SUMMER SESSION IN LAS VEGAS 2014

I had the most fulfilling five weeks studying at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ main campus last June. I was excited to see how different things can be at the other end of the world, e.g. how left-side driving is like, how much tips to give and whether the premium outlets were having crazy discounts like they all shout about. I was thrilled at the chance of a real campus life experience, boasting interaction with foreigners, fullscale campus facilities, such as the legendary Student Union. We learned how to manage both the front and back of house of our training restaurant; the best part being able to decide our own theme and menu! At the professors’ recommendation, we travelled around US, savoured fine cuisine, visited casinos and designed our own website to record our learning. Arrangements to the Las Vegas Strip properties by the college was a bonus and an eye-opener for a Hospitality student! Thank you UNLV for an amazing summer!

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM, INTO THE PUBLICATION ENVIRONMENT! At a hospitality college, not only do our students undergo rigorous training to mould their dexterity in customer service, but also discover the environmental implications pertaining to operations in the hospitality industry. The 21st century has seen greater relevance and emphasis on environmental sustainability and paramount focus on issues such as climate change and waste management. As such, the students of UNLV Singapore had embarked on a project with their professor, Dr. Rajee Olaganathan, by diving into the technical aspects of environmental management, energy conservation, and green technology. Under the expertise and strategic supervision of Environmental Biotechnology veteran Dr. Rajee, the students navigated their knowledge towards grasping the mechanics of environmental science. Through the devoted effort, the students were able to reveal valued and detailed information through scientific literature reviews that encompassed the scopes of biofuel technology, climate change, role of technology in environmental management etc. Three exceptional scientific papers were selected and refined under the strict mentoring of Dr. Rajee. These papers were subsequently published in the following international journals.

Zack Ho Xuan Yi , Mameegate Zheng Jun Cheston, Rajee Olaganathan, Debra Tong, and Aston Lee (From L to R).

Tan Kok Ann, Kwa Liang Hao, Alistair Seetho, Olaganathan Rajee, Teo Cher Kiat Gabriel, Koh Qi Shen Fabian, Lim Jun Shen.

The relationship forged between students and the professor has not only demonstrated remarkable progress in students through value-added experiences, but also an attainment of another educational milestone.
