Inside you’ll read about a distinguished campus guest from the United States Department of Commerce, the u n d e r g r a d u a t e L a s Ve g a s s u m m e r s t u d y abroad session and two students who were selected to attend an HFTP conference in the U.S. The feature story is our graduating class of 2012. President Neal J. Smatresk and Dean Donald D. Snyder joined us in Singapore to confer undergraduate degrees in Hotel Administration and graduate degrees in Hospitality Administration. We a r e l o o k i n g a h e a d t o t h e F a l l s e m e s t e r as we welcome our new students: the class of 2014! WELCOME

Summer is a great time a t U N LV S i n g a p o r e . We welcomed three main campus study abroad and relocation students to the Singapore campus. An information session on studying in Singapore will be h e l d t h i s S e p t e m b e r i n L a s Ve g a s a s m o r e U N LV s t u d e n t s s e e k t o s p e n d a s u m m e r o r more in Asia. As I mentioned in our last update, 217 Singapore campus undergraduates studied abroad at the main campus during Summer S e s s i o n I t h i s y e a r. T h e y t o o k c l a s s e s w i t h m a i n c a m p u s f a c u l t y, l i v e d o n c a m p u s i n t h e dormitories and experienced Rebel life in L a s Ve g a s . I m a g e s a r e i n s i d e , a n d I t h i n k you’ll agree with me that this was an e x c i t i n g t i m e f o r a l l . We n o w t u r n t o t h e upcoming academic year as preparations are underway to welcome the class of 2014. We e x p e c t o v e r 2 0 0 n e w f r e s h m a n a n d t r a n s f e r s t u d e n t s t o j o i n u s t h i s y e a r, a n d I look forward to introducing you to them in our next issue.

U.S. UNDER SECRETARY OF COMMERCE FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE FRANCISCO J. SÁNCHEZ PUBLIC LECTURE

In line with U.S. efforts to further engage with Asia, the United States Under Secretar y of Commerce for Inter national Trade, Francisco J. Sánchez’s presentation in Singapore on “America’s 21st Centur y Export Economy – Opportunities in Tourism and Education” centered on how US education assists in the development of emerging economies within Asia.

Reflecting on the experience of leading trade missions to the Asia-Pacific region, the Under Secretary also highlighted the role of education and risk taking on his own professional development within the Department of Commerce and his excitement in promoting American exports overseas, including education. He commented on the growth of U.S. branch campuses and the rising numbers of Singaporeans studying in the United S t a t e s f u r t h e r, e n h a n c i n g t h e U . S . - S i n g a p o r e relationship. He fondly talked about his own international experiences after graduating from u n i v e r s i t y, a n d e n c o u r a g e d a l l t o c o n t i n u e traveling and studying abroad. Highlighting new i n i t i a t i v e s t o m a k e t r a v e l t o t h e U . S . e v e n e a s i e r, Under Secretary Sánchez shared figures related to the economic growth and development of the growing tourism industry before taking questions from the audience. Under Secretary Sánchez was j o i n t l y h o s t e d b y U N LV S i n g a p o r e a n d t h e American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore’, addressing over 50 attendees at the National Library Building on 17 May 2012.

The fourth commencement ceremony for U N LV S i n g a p o r e w a s h e l d o n 8 J u n e 2 0 1 2 a t t h e R a ff l e s H o t e l S i n g a p o r e . U N LV P r e s i d e n t Neal J. Smatresk conferred 15 Master of Hospitality Administration degrees and 49 Bachelor of Science degrees in Hotel Administration. Also on stage to congratulate graduates were Dean Donald D. Snyder of t h e W i l l i a m F. H a r r a h C o l l e g e o f H o t e l Administration, Associate Dean Richard C. Linstrom and Assistant Dean Billy Bai. This y e a r ’s student speakers were MHA

graduate Yolanda Lao Kin Man (’12) and BS graduate Justin Aow (’12) . D u r i n g h i s r e m a r k s P r e s i d e n t

S m a t r e s k h i g h l i g h t e d t h e 11 c o u n t r i e s t h e graduates represented, the ratio of females to males in the graduate classes (64% and 36% respectively), and youngest and oldest graduates (20 and 49 years old respectively). Congratulations Class of 2012!

A v a r i e t y o f c o u r s e s w e r e o ff e r e d i n c l u d i n g food and beverage, hospitality management and gaming which were t a u g h t b y H o t e l C o l l e g e f a c u l t y. S t u d e n t s enrolled in two classes, many of which included extensive property tours. Residing at the U N LV dormitories, s t u d e n t s experienced the main

campus and explored Las Vegas .

RECEPTION FOR ALUMNI & GRADUATING STUDENTS The William F. Harrah Hotel College Alumni Chapter hosted this year ’s alumni reception at the Singapore Campus student union on 7 June 2012. In attendance were UNLV President Neal J. Smatresk, the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration Dean Donald D. Snyder, their respective spouses, the graduating class of 2012, and Singapore campus alumni, faculty, and staff. Organized by UNLV Singapore student club members from the Wine Society and the Student Management Team, guests enjoyed a sampling of local Singaporean delights accompanied by wines.

In Memoriam

U N LV g r a d u a t e C h a r m a i n e C h i a P e i I n g ( ’ 0 9 ) , p a r t o f U N LV S i n g a p o r e ’s f i r s t g r a d u a t i n g class, passed away on 7 July 2012. Classmates and faculty fondly remember her as an adventurous foodie, sharing new cuisines with fellow classmates and visiting faculty during her studies.

STUDY TOUR FOR MACAO POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE U N LV S i n g a p o r e r e c e n t l y h o s t e d 2 7 u n d e r g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t s studying gaming and recreation management, and 5 administrative faculty from Macao Polytechnic Institute for a four-day study tour in Singapore. Facilitated by P r o f e s s o r s - i n - R e s i d e n c e D r. K u r t A . S t a h u r a a n d D r. K a r l D . B r a n d m e i r, t h e t o u r f o c u s e d o n t h e r o l e o f g a m i n g a s a contributor to the tourism infrastructure of Singapore, along with recreational components as well. Site visits included R e s o r t s Wo r l d a t S e n t o s a a n d J e t Q u a y, a l o n g w i t h d a i l y in-class lectures on the role of leisure development, tourism trends, and gaming in an Asian context. Part of a

growing collaboration with institutions in Macao , U N LV S i n g a p o r e w i l l l o o k f o r w a r d t o s u c h a tour as an annual event for Macao Polytechnic students.
