Message From the Lieutenant Governor: Hello UNLV CKI! First of all, congratulations on reestablishing the club newsletter after such a long absence! James has been working very hard on these in his short time in the position, so y'all should definitely show him your appreciation and support! This term Desert Oasis has prospered thanks to members like you. This year's 7 WAW's, 11 DCM's, and other interclub events would not have been as successful without you. Members like you have given our division many new friendships that are rekindled with every division event. In addition to these events, Desert Oasis has also embarked on a journey to charter new clubs, some of which you may begin to see this coming term! And this is in addition to the three small clubs who have been working hard to reestablish themselves. With the division newsletter also making a comeback after a 6year absence, it looks like this was an all-around great years for newsletters in DO. Personally, I have really enjoyed seeing so many new faces from UNLV join our Desert Oasis family. One of my favorite parts of my term as LTG was getting to spend a week-and-a-half with you all back in September. I've loved reconnecting with y'all at every visitation and division and district event since. I can't wait to see all the new heights you will achieve in 2018-2019, UNLV! Thank you for being so passionate and amazing this year, y'all. I can't wait to see you again at March Melody, District Convention, April WAW, Spring Training Conference, and May WAW!!! -Max Rico

Fall Installation Banquet: Fall Banquet is our club wide dinner UNLV CKI holds at the end of our fall semester. It’s a time where we can look back to appreciate and recognize all the hard work that has been put into the organization. I will say however, my favorite part of fall banquet is the induction ceremony. This is when we recognize our new members who have satisfied their 15/5 requirement and are in good standing with the organization. For anyone who hasn’t attended CKI Fall Banquet, I strongly recommend going next time the opportunity comes around. Hope to see you all at the next one.

Secret Cactus: Never really having a lot of friends to do stuff around the holiday times with, Secret Cactus was probably the best social that I went to this year. It was tons of fun, from trying to guess my secret Santa to watching Jacob and Nit wear their twin ugly sweater to writing a bunch of jokes in everyone’s affirmation cups. Going home later that night and reading all the heartwarming notes everyone put in the affirmation cups gave me such a nice and warm feeling. I loved every minute of Secret Cactus and will for sure go next year too.

Salvation Army Service Project: This service has been a wonderful experience! Our members were eager to serve food for the homeless people in Las Vegas. Las Vegas has one of the largest population of homeless people in the United States with 6,490 people living on the streets, we wanted to do with the best of our abilities to help them. We served food, and passed out utensils, as well as helping the crew clean up afterwards. Not only that one of the chefs gave us freshly baked bread to take home! It was definitely one of the few service events that I would definitely go back to!

UNLV's 11th Annual Serenade: Symphony of Stars How can I describe the feeling of performing at Serenade? Normal words fail to adequately express the raw emotion that one feels from being on stage, surrounded by friends, and belting as hard as one can. The line-up was exceptional, each performance building upon the last, all culminating in a fantastic final performance featuring all of the performers. The bidding was fast and exciting, each new bid raising spirits until finally settling on the winning bid. The food was exquisite, the kimchi fried rice was nearly as divine as my own performance. This was by far my favorite Serenade.

Region 5 Conclave: Key Club Conclave is an annual event in which key club members from region five come together and elect their new lieutenant governors for the 20182019 term. The process of conclave is very similar to our own club elections. For example, each candidate is given five minutes to give a speech on why he or she is qualified to lead the division they’re a part of. Then after the speech part they have a couple minutes to answer questions from people in the audience. Conclave is one of those events that shows that anyone can run for a leadership position no matter who and how old they’re. Also it’s a great event to see how another branch of the Kiwanis family functions.
