WELCOME TO THE 2014 FALL SEED GUIDE Crops include in this guide are winter wheat, winter barley, and triticale. You may receive this guide in the mail or through the University of Nebraska Extension network. The data and other information this guide is based on can be found at our web site: http://cropwatch.unl.edu/ varietytest/ and http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/ncia. Additional information is available at the wheat variety virtual tour web site http://cropwatch.unl.edu/wheat/virtual or the winter wheat variety selection tool page http://citnews.unl.edu/winter_wheat_tool/index.shtml. Our rainfed plots in Keith County were lost to hail damage. Last season we had moist soil conditions at planting for the majority of the locations. There was good crop emergence and pre-frost kill growth. Pest and disease incidence was normal except for some incidence of wheat streak mosaic and a high incidence of Cephalosporium stripe. Other diseases reported included bacterial streak, Septoria tritici blotch, tan spot, Fusarium head blight, and loose smut. No rust diseases were reported. Other challenges to the 2014 wheat crop included dry conditions at grain filling, relatively wet and cool growing condition at stem elongation, and some pest problems in the west. Overall, yield return was very good from test plots compared to the previous year. - Teshome Regassa, Ph. D.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This circular is a progress report of variety trials conducted by personnel of the Agronomy Department, West Central, and Panhandle Research and Extension Centers and their associated agricultural laboratories. Conduct of experiments and publication of results is a joint effort of the Agricultural Research Division and the Cooperative Extension Service. Tests were supported in part by fees paid by commercial seed companies and the Nebraska Wheat Board. Special acknowledgment is made to farmer cooperators who furnished land for experiments; also to Extension Educators and others who assisted with the tests. The authors wish to acknowledge the assistance of the technical support staff: Neal Mattox, Greg Dorn, Richard Little, Jeff Golus, Vern Florke, Mary Guttieri, Mitch Montgomery, along with many student workers and graduate students. Their help is vital to this research. We would like to thank the Nebraska Wheat Board for contributing wheat check-off money and the Nebraska Agricultural Statistics Service for compiling data on varieties and production of wheat. This circular reports data from winter wheat trials conducted throughout Nebraska. Entries include commercial varieties and promising experimental lines from Nebraska, surrounding states, and private breeders. The state has been divided into four districts for the purposes of variety testing (Panhandle, West Central, South Central, and Southeast).

WINTER WHEAT PERFORMANCE There were 16 trials planted across Nebraska in the fall of 2014. The Keith dryland site was lost due to hail damage during the growing season. Names of cooperators, trial locations, planting dates, harvest dates, highest location mean yield, and mean of top five varieties are shown in Table A. Location specific information such as soil type, tillage, previous crop, and fertilizer applications are shown in Table B. Plot sizes varied with location. Nursery-type plots of six rows wide and 15 to 35 feet long were planted at test locations. All tests were direct combined. Entries were replicated 3 to 6 times. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, winter wheat was sown on 1. 5 million acres. 1.4 million acres were harvested producing a projected 56 million bushels of grain. The average winter wheat yield of Nebraska for all wheat harvested during the summer of 2014 was projected to be 40 bushels per acre (bu/a). Winter wheat yields and production from the previous 10 years are reported below.

WINTER WHEAT VARIETY SELECTION Yielding ability of different varieties cannot be measured with absolute accuracy because of variations in local disease incidence, soil fertility, seasonal rainfall or moisture, and other factors. For this reason, small differences in yield have no significance. Unless the difference in yield of two varieties is greater than the difference required for significance shown in the tables, little confidence can be placed in the superiority of one variety over the other for measured traits in that particular test. These differences are shown at the 5% level, meaning that differences as large or larger could be expected through chance alone in 1 of 20 trials (5%). Even though two varieties are not statistically different, there may be other factors which influence the choice of one over the other. Factors such as disease resistance, grain quality, agronomic desirability, or availability of seed may influence that decision. Complementary varieties are important when selecting additional varieties to grow. One definition of complementary varieties is that they come from diverse parentages. A more in depth discussion of variety complementation is found in the Crop Improvement section. In order to help select varieties with diverse parentages, the related families of many varieties are included in the characteristics chart. Protein data was collected from two replicates at each location. The protein data was combined within each district and reported in the district tables. Protein was determined from whole grain using a Perten DA 7250 Near Infrared Spectrometer. Please refer to the Variety Test Home Page for individual site yields and other relevant information at the following link: http://cropwatch.unl.edu/varietytest/wheat.

RESULTS AT INDIVIDUAL LOCATIONS Southeast: There were three rainfed trials conducted in the Southeast District at Saunders, Lancaster, and Saline counties. •

The Saline County Rainfed test was planted on October 9th into soybean stubble. 100 lbs of 11-52-0 was applied in the fall followed by 100 lb of actual N in the spring. Plots were harvested on July 17th with a top yield of 91 bu/ac and an average yield of 80 bu/ac.

The Saunders County Rainfed test was planted on October 1st. A total of 80 lbs N was applied. Plots were harvested on July 15th with a top yield of 55 bu/ac and an average yield of 49 bu/ac. Cold winter, cold temperature at peak growing period and unusually wet growing season favored tall varieties including historic checks. Bacterial streak was observed but not scored. The tall varieties did escaped (avoided) bacterial streak, the prevalent disease which is mainly splash distributed. Thus, among other factors, bacterial streak may have aggravated the drop in yield for the shorter varieties. Bleached heads (Cephalosporium stripe) were observed on some plots which may explain the drop in test weight and shriveled kernels.

The Lancaster County Rainfed test was planted on October 2nd on soybean ground. 50 lb N and 80 lb P was applied as fertilizer. Plots were harvested on July 7th with a top yield of 87 bu/ac and an average yield of 79 bu/ac.

South Central: There was one rainfed trial conducted in the South Central District at Clay Center in Clay County •

4

The Clay County Rainfed test was planted on September 23rd. A total of 75 lbs N was applied. Plots were harvested on July 16th with a top yield of 68 bu/ac and an average yield of 54 bu/ac.

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN EXTENSION | DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY & HORTICULTURE VARIETY TESTING PROGRAM

West Central: Five locations were planted in the West Central District. One irrigated trial was planted in Chase County. Rainfed trials were planted in Furnas, Red Willow, Keith, and Lincoln counties. All rainfed sites were left fallow during the previous growing season with corn as the crop before. •

The Chase County Irrigated test was planted on October 2nd. Prior to planting 50 lbs N was applied followed by 30 lb 11-52-0 as starter. In the spring 60 lb N and 50 lb N via fertigation was applied. Plots were harvested on July 16th with a top yield of 127 bu/ac and an average yield of 111 bu/ac.

The Keith County Rainfed test was planted on September 26th but unfortunately had severe hail damage during the season. This site was not harvested.

The Furnas County Rainfed test was planted on September 20th. 20 lb of 11-52-0 was applied as starter. Plots were harvested on July 9th with a top yield of 65 bu/ac and an average yield of 42 bu/ac.

The Red Willow County Rainfed test was planted on September 21st. 20 lb of 11-52-0 was applied as starter. Plots were harvested on July 8th with a top yield of 95 bu/ac and an average yield of 81 bu/ac.

The Lincoln County Rainfed test was planted on September 23rd. Prior to planting 32-0-0 was applied at 60 lbs/ac along with 20 lb 11-52-0 starter. Plots were harvested on July 22nd with a top yield of 58 bu/ac and an average yield of 44 bu/ac.

Panhandle: Six locations were planted in the Panhandle District. One irrigated trial was planted in Box Butte County. Rainfed trials were planted in Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, and on the NE-WY Stateline. •

The Box Butte County Irrigated trial was planted on September 29th. The field had 100 lb N and 30 lb of P2O5 applied. Plots were harvested with a top yield of 121 bu/ac and an average yield of 103 bu/ac.

The Cheyenne County Rainfed trial was planted on September 19th. A total of 50 lbs N was applied. Plots were harvested on July 23rd with a top yield of 51 bu/ac and an average yield of 40 bu/ac.

The Deuel County Rainfed trial was planted on September 9th. A total of 60 lbs N was applied. Plots were harvested on July 19th with a top yield of 50 bu/ac and an average yield of 41 bu/ ac.

The NE-WY Stateline Rainfed trial was planted on September 18th. Plots were harvested on July 23rd with a top yield of 58 bu/ac and an average yield of 30 bu/ac.

The Dawes County Rainfed test was planted on September 16th. Plots were harvested on July 26th with a top yield of 79 bu/ac and an average yield of 68 bu/ac.

The Box Butte County Rainfed trial was planted on September 17th. Plots were harvested on July 23rd with a top yield of 75 bu/ac and an average yield of 67 bu/ac.

Organic Trial: •

The Clay County Organic test was planted on September 25th and harvested on July 17th. This organic site uses a crop rotation of 3 years alfalfa, corn, soybean, wheat/vetch, and popcorn. At harvest, this trial had a top yield of 72 bu/ac and an average yield of 63 bu/ac.

Lab Supervisor The purpose of this directory is to provide crop producers, decision makers and the seed industry with a reference to seed sources in Nebraska. This seed book includes those members whose fields were planted with eligible seed stocks and whose applications for field inspection were received by the publication date. Inquiries about seed supplies and prices should be directed to the growers and/or seed enterprises listed, not to the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association. In no case is the seed listed in this seed book yet CERTIFIED, for it must be conditioned, tested in the laboratory, and labeled with the official certification tag or bulk sale certificate before it can be offered for sale as Certified Quality Seed. Seed producers, conditioners, and distributors voluntarily use the seed certification process to assure their customers that extra care has been taken to provide them with correctly identified, genetically pure seed. The CERTIFIED SEED label identifies seed meeting quality requirements and assures the buyer of obtaining reliable performance of the variety named on the label. Each member is responsible for handling certifiable seed so it will also meet the Nebraska Certification Standards for physical purity and germination. The Nebraska Seed Law requires EACH container of seed be labeled as to its origin, the germination percentage and date of test, the percentage by weight of pure seed, other crop seed, weed seed, and inert matter. By studying the CERTIFIED LABEL, a buyer can determine the quality of the seed. If Certified seed is purchased in the bulk, each sale is accompanied by an official Retail Bulk Sale Certificate, which includes the same information as a label. Orders for Certified seed may be accepted by the listed growers, approved conditioners, and authorized distributors only with the understanding that they will be filled if and when ALL the certification requirements are completed. Notice to Buyer: Exclusion of Warranties and Limitations of Damages Seed bearing authorized Nebraska Certified Quality labels has met the minimum requirements outlined in the current edition of the Nebraska Seed Certification Standards. The seed certification process relies upon samples and records provided by members/applicants which are beyond the control of the certifying agency. Therefore, the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association makes no warranties, expressed or implied, including warranty of merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose concerning certified seed and hereby expressly disclaims the same. In no event shall the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association be responsible for damages, actual, incidental, or consequential, regarding certified seed provided by applicants/members and/or vendors. However, complaints addressed to the the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association will be investigated.

PLANT VARIETY PROTECTION ACT HOW IT BENEFITS YOU! !

Any varieties listed in this publication under the Plant Variety Protection Act will be marked with the

!

It takes up to ten years to develop a new variety. PVP encourages plant breeding research to produce even better varieties for tomorrow. Without PVP, plant breeders could not afford to invest capital into new varieties and would not be interested in breeding improved varieties.

!

Most protected varieties can only be sold as certified quality seed. This helps ensure that the seed buyer gets the variety exactly as the breeder intended it to be.

!

The use of certified quality, genetically pure seed allows the complementary varieties you've chosen to make the most of the growing environment.

!

The Department of Agriculture is responsible for enforcement of Plant Variety Protection violations in Nebraska. Private seed companies are authorized to take appropriate legal action. WHEAT VARIETY SELECTION & COMPLEMENTATION Because there is no single perfect variety, using complementation enables you to offset the potential weaknesses (production limitations) found in each variety with the strengths of others. This compensation improves the opportunity for yield stability and profitability of your entire wheat production system. The number of complementary varieties you grow or the acres to be planted to each variety will depend entirely on your production conditions and special needs. There are four simple steps in using the variety complementation strategy. 1. Identify your workhorse varieties-These are the varieties now being grown on a majority of your acres with a reliable and proven record of performance over a period of years. 2. Complement production needs and limits - Select varieties that have useful characteristics needed for your specific production practices, soil conditions, and offer the best protection from diseases and other yield limiting factors common to your growing area. 3. Complement with a range of maturities - Select varieties that mature earlier or later than your workhorse variety, because some years may favor early varieties and some may favor later varieties. A spread of maturities will also allow you to stagger your harvest and take maximum advantage of your equipment and reduce potential losses to weathering, etc. 4. Complement with different genetics - Select varieties that share 50% or less similar parentage to your workhorse variety and each other. Varieties with similar genetic backgrounds can often be susceptible to the same disease and production risks.

U.S. Plant Variety Protection: N = not protected, A = PVP applied for, P = protected variety, 94 = Applied for or protected under revised PVP Act of 1994. These comparative ratings are based on each variety's average performance within its area of adaptation under normal Nebraska growing conditions and cultural practices. Plant performance will be influenced by soil, weather, pests, and other production conditions. For yield comparisons, see EC 99-107A. R=resistant; S=susceptible; MR=moderately resistant; MS=moderately susceptible; MT=moderately tolerant; T=tolerant. The reaction may vary depending on disease or development, management practices, and/or plant growth stage or deviations in genetic resistance within the variety. A rank of medium means 15 to 16% grain protein content is typical.

The objectives of the Approved Conditioner program are: 1. To expand the marketing options of seed producers who may not have adequate cleaning or merchandising facilities. 2. To provide the retail seed trade with reliable high quality sources of seed. 3. To improve the quality of seed available, while insuring maintenance of varietal purity. 4. To promote acceptance and use of Nebraska certified seed.
