Table Talk 1

Table Talk You and your family are invited into an adventure of church. Your home is a crucial and exciting place in the Kingdom of God! What if your family, from your youngest to your oldest, ventured into scripture, prayer and life as disciples? How would your family change or be encouraged? How would your family change or encourage San Antonio?! Table talk is a weekly reader and action guide. We have prepared 13 weeks for your family or group to connect and grow through 1 John. Beginning the week of June 9 and ending the week of August 25, God will continue to make your home a place of His Kingdom, His Church. This is designed to be friendly for whole families, small groups or even individuals; however, we do use family language throughout. 1 John addresses basic and vital truth about the nature of God, the life that results from knowing God and the life of Jesus-followers in the church. In short “1that Jesus is one with God, as well as one with us; that love and righteousness are indispensable for the believer who seeks, as a child of God, to walk in the light; and that unity, however flexible, is a demand laid upon all the churches.

HOW TO: Each week you will be guided through prayer, scripture reading, working with the scripture together, discussion, and response. Gathering: Choose a consistent day and time for your family (or group). Make it something that you can do while traveling, over Skype or FaceTime, or in a “normal” week. If you do this 4 times in a row, you will be far more likely to see growth and a new habit. It is a great idea throw a party the first time; cake, ice cream, balloons etc. Read Ahead: Read this before your set time to gather as a family. This is for the older children and adults to do on their own time, prior to the gathering. Prayer: Begin your time together with prayer. Pray for one another, University UMC, San Antonio and the world to be people and places of God’s Kingdom. Close by saying the included prayer together. Read Aloud: Read these few verses aloud. You may choose to rotate who reads, or all read it out loud together. Your choice. Work with the Word: Write in this book! Or in your Bible! If you have young children, be creative with how you invite them into this: a whiteboard or a blank piece of paper is great. Giving your younger children a crayon to find words to circle is very appropriate. Use playdoh to let them sculpt an idea. If you have older students, give them time and space to share their thoughts or reactions. Nothing they say 5

at this point is wrong. - I mean, they are talking about the Bible with you; that is a win right there! Then, talk about why the words, feelings or phrases stood out to you. Did you all choose the same thing? What were the different things that stood out to you? Something to Chew On: This is a small note to add to your family’s conversation about the scripture you are working with. It may help provide clarity or create new questions. The Main Thing: This is a short phrase or sentence that identifies what this passages is teaching your family today. If you read this next month it could be different. Today, what is it that the Holy Spirit is sharing with your family. Respond in Life: What do we do with scripture and the Main Thing? We take a moment and respond in these three ways. Record everyone’s responses each week in the space provided. First, how is your fellowship with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? This is a rating of how you are in your faith and with God. Each person selects a number, 1-10, that indicates how his or her soul is. Then share one word that helps describe how they are or why they are choosing that number. Second, how are you intentionally Looking to Jesus? Each person names a spiritual discipline, something they will try to do in the next week to know and love Jesus more. Be specific and reasonable. Be specific by naming what you will be doing, how often and how long. For Example: I will pray for this family for 5 minutes, 3 times a week 6

and I will write one of the prayers. Third, how will each of you, or perhaps as a family, Look like Jesus in the world? This is a great way to serve together in the summer. Some ideas: Go to lunch after church at a really inexpensive place, and give the person at the register the difference between what you paid and what you would have paid at your normal spot. OR, give a friend, co-worker or stranger an encouraging Sticky Note. OR, before you pray over your dinner at a restaurant, ask your waitperson how you can pray for them. Instagram instructions: Open your Instagram app and press the blue camera button on the bottom of the screen. This will open the camera and you can take your picture through the app by pressing the round blue camera button. Hit the green Next button until the share page comes up. Type your pictures description in the box that says add a caption. When you want to tag our instagram profile in your picture, type a pound sign then the word or phrase you want without any spaces. All of this will be contained in the captions box. We will be using #TableTalkTheU as the hashtag for this book.

Week 1 - The Word of Life Read Ahead: 1 John 1:1-4 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Almighty Father, your holy Son, Jesus, prayed before his passion for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one. Unite University UMC, our Family, and all believers as we are being bound together in love and obedience to you, in one body by the one Spirit. We pray this so that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Read Aloud: What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life… what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete. ~1 John 1:1,3-4 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: The “Word of Life”, Jesus Christ, is the beginning and the ending (1 John 5:20) of the book. It is in our relationship with Jesus that we have fellowship with God. Out of this holy and divine fellowship we are invited to be in holy and divine fellowship with all people. •What do you think about this? 8

The Main Thing: In one phrase, what is the main thing for your family today?

Respond in Life: See the How To page for help, suggestions, ideas on this section. How is your fellowship with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Rate it with a number (1-10) and a word (Strong, Weak, Doubting, Tired, Amazing, etc): How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Pray for each family member by name 2 times this week. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Tell each of your family members how you prayed for them. Post a photo of your family on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. •Have a conversation with someone you don’t know like a barista at Starbucks. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For think is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen 9

Week 2 - Live in the Light: God is Light Read Ahead: 1 John 1:5-7 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Almighty Father, your holy Son, Jesus, prayed before his passion for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one. Unite our Family, University UMC, and all believers as we are being bound together in love and obedience to you, in one body by the one Spirit. We pray this so that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Read Aloud: This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. ~1 John 1:5-7 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: Have you ever tried to describe God? It can be frustrating and challenging. What if the difficulty is not trying to define God, but realizing that we do not describe Him as we live day to day. If God is light, what then, does that say about me? God is Light. As you Live in Light you define God. 10

In the next 4 weeks we will continue to define Living in Light. •What do you think about this? The Main Thing: In one phrase, what is the main thing for your family today?

Respond in Life: How is your fellowship with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Rate it with a number (1-10) and a word (Strong, Weak, Doubting, Tired, Amazing, etc):

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week,? •Suggestion: Sit in a pitch black closet for 3 minutes and write down your impressions of the darkness. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Invite some friends over. Turn out all the lights. Play flashlight tag. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. •Each member of your family put on a blindfold and attempt to navigate from one end of the house to the other. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

11

Week 3 - Live in the Light: Confess Sin Read Ahead: 1 John 1:8-2:2 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. ~1 John 1:8-2:2 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: Sin is an ugly possibility in our lives, even while we try to live in the light. The beautiful truth is that God has provided His Son, our Lord Jesus. It is to Jesus who we confess; it is Jesus who forgives; it is Jesus who makes life 12

in the light possible. This doesn’t excuse us from sin; life in Jesus is the challenging promise to all people that we can live free of sin’s power.

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Confess. Ask forgiveness. Do this at least once this week or write down your confession and then with the help of an adult burn it. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: If there is someone you trust ask them to hear your confession. •Get a U|Shop bag from the church. Return it full of good stuff. Listen to In the Light by DC Talk as you roll up to the swimming pool. Crank it up loud. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

13

Week 4 - Live in the Light: Be Obedient. Read Ahead: 1 John 2:3-11 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: Whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. ~1 John 2:5-6 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: Only you know if you are abiding in Christ. You can review how you are doing by seeing the absence of sin and the presence of obedient love. This is shown by how you walk around, how you live. Abiding in Christ is “walking in the same manner” as Christ, obeying His example. •What do you think about this?

14

The Main Thing: In one phrase, what is the main thing for your family today?

Respond in Life: How is your fellowship with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Rate it with a number (1-10) and a word (Strong, Weak, Doubting, Tired, Amazing, etc):

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Sit in a crowded place for several minutes and ask the Holy Spirit for peace. OR write down some of the things that cause you to feel anxious and/or cause chaos in your life. Then pray for God’s peace over those things. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Take yourself a chair and an extra chair to a busy place and set up a relaxation station. Week 5 - Live in the Light: Abide in Christ Read Ahead: 1 John 2:12–17 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. ~ 1 John 2:15-17 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: See the contrasts in 1 John 2:15-17: Love of the World vs Love of the Father What comes from the World vs What comes from the Father The World passes away vs One who obeys God lives forever •What do you think about these? 16

•Suggestion: What do you love in this world? What would be hardest to give away or let go of? Write it down and pray for God’s view of it this week. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Post a photo on Instagram of something that demonstrates the Love of the World at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

17

Week 6 - Live in the Light: Focus on the Father Read Ahead: 1 John 2:18-29 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him. ~ 1 John 2:27-29 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: This chunk of 1 John feels like it is totally about understanding Christ, but we can also see the Trinity in relationship, inviting and empowering us to live in the light. You can live in the light now, and have hope and 18

confidence in the righteousness of the Father, the second coming of Jesus, and the present anointing of the Holy Spirit.

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? Suggestion: Write a paragraph or two to God explaining how you trust him. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? Suggestion: Write a paragraph or two to someone in your family explaining why you trust them. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

19

Week 7 - Live as Children of God: God Is Father Read Ahead: 1 John 3:1-3 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. ~ 1 John 3:1-3 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: What does it mean to be a child of God? Well, many things, but it begins with recognizing God as Father. (Note: This is not to place God in the box of how we experience our fathers or in any way making a comparison between fatherhood and motherhood. This is to say who God is as a Father.) 20

We are part of the family. Just as God is Light and we live in the light (1 John 1:5,7) God is Father and we are invited to live as His children.

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Make something for God that he might put on His “Cosmic Fridge” like when you were in 1st grade for your parents. Put it on your Fridge at home. Write Child on your hand and pray to God everytime you see it for the rest of the day. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Parents- Demonstrate your love for your children. Children- Remind your parents that they are children of God the Father. Go volunteer at a children’s home or at a nursery. If you know someone who is adopted ask them about it. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father… 21

Week 8 - Living As Children of God: Don’t Sin Read Ahead: 1 John 3:4-9 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin…The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. ~1 John 3:4-5,8 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: Sin again?! Sin is a challenging topic and 1 John addresses it for two primary reasons: First, Sin is both our separation from God and shows that we are separate from Him. Second, Jesus conquers sin and invites us to live a sinless life. See the chart below for a way to think about this section (verses reference 1 John 3): •Sin is lawlessness (v4) and of the devil (v8). •Jesus appeared to remove sin (v5) and to destroy the works of the devil (v8). 22

•No one who is a Child of God lives in sin (v6) or practices sin (v9). As you discuss this, remember 1 John 2:1, and that Jesus continues to remove sin in the lives of those who abide in Him.

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Get a tennis ball or baseball, go somewhere you can throw it and just let it rip. Spend some time thinking about how far away the ball is and how big a divide sin causes between us and God. Spend sometime in prayer asking for forgiveness from God for your sin. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Do something competitive as a family i.e. board game, go-kart, cards, and then talk about what are your favorite things about your family. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

23

Week 9 - Live as Children of God: Abide in Christ Read Ahead: 1 John 3:10-24 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. ~1 John 3:18,23-24 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: To abide in Christ is to obey His commandment to love one another. We know that the Holy Spirit is the presence of God and the power of God in each of us. It is through the Holy Spirit that we abide in Christ (presence) and obey the love command (power). •What do you think about this? 24

•Suggestion: Think about your words and actions and how they reflect Christ. Ask God to correct any that do not. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: As a family everyone answer the question, “How was I least and most like Christ this week”. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

Week 10 - Live as Children of God: Choose God Read Ahead: 1 John 4:1-6 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. ~1 john 4:4-6 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: Just as in Week 5, this week the contrast between evil and God is restated. He, the evil one who is in the world, promotes ignoring the word of God and delusion. However, God is greater than this evil one, and we are from God. Being from God, we love His word, and we embrace His truth. The truth is this: The Kingdom of God is near, Choose God. 26

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Go into a closet or some place dark like you did in week 2. Bring a flashlight, turn it on and notice how the dark doesn’t affect the light. The light affects the Dark. Write down your impressions. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: Watch something like Lord of the Rings or Narnia:The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a family. Talk about the good and the evil in the movie afterwards. Post a photo on Instagram at #tabletalktheU. The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father…

Week 11 - Live as Children of God: God is Love Read Ahead: 1 John 4:7-5:4 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: This is a long one. Take you time with. Break it into small pieces if it helps. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atonement for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. ~1 John 4:9-16 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? 28

Something to Chew On: This is the action of salvation, that God is Love. This is not only a character statement or a statement of emotion. God is Love is not something reversible, ie. Love is not God. God is Love is the action statement of Jesus and our salvation. God loved us in Jesus. We love God in Jesus. God is Love. We are His children.

How will you be Looking to Jesus this week? •Suggestion: Go to your bathroom mirror and write on it words that are loving or compliments. Then step back and look at the words then yourself and know that is how God sees you. How will you Look like Jesus to someone else this week? •Suggestion: How much do you love your family? Week 12 - Live as Children of God: Stay Focused Read Ahead: 1 John 5:5-13 Pray: Begin by offering your own prayers and finish by saying the following together. Amen Read Aloud: These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. ~1 John 5:13 Work with the Word: Circle, highlight, sing or write the 1. Words the stuck out, 2. Feelings you had while reading, 3. Important phrases. •Share these with your family. •What are the similarities and differences in your work? Something to Chew On: 1 John has been making the point that Jesus is the Son of God and is our salvation. In this part of chapter 5, and in most of the book, the word believe or belief is the same as have faith or faith. Have faith in Jesus, He is God’s Son. Have faith as a child of God in Jesus. •What do you think about this?
