Library Renovation Project After months of designing, planning, and preparation, the Mary Frances Campbell Library is officially open and fully functional for our Middle and Upper School students.

“This renovation project and idea started after numerous meetings with students in which they communicated a need for a place where they could study in a comfortable setting,” says Stuart Hirstein, Head of School. “I think it is critical to our school that we create inspiring spaces where kids can interact with one another while studying. I wish to thank all of the donors who made this possible as well as James Kirkland and Jeff Watlington who spent countless hours helping the school oversee this project. I would like to thank Cary Henson of Henson Construction who did a fantastic job on the project and Lisa Deaton of TLM Associates who created the design and had the vision for what this space could become."

We would also like to thank all of those who financially contributed to this project, including the USJ Parents Club who was our lead donor on the renovations.

There’s a Buzz About Campus USJ was the 350th school to be awarded an Observation Bee Hive Grant this past May from The Bee Cause Project & Whole Kids Foundation. This organization’s mission is to provide youth with opportunities to understand, engage, and learn from honey bees in order to connect with the natural environment while developing STEAM skills.

The school also took part in the foundation’s “Pay It Forward” fundraiser in which students sold jars of honey to raise money to provide a hive to another school. For each jar sold, a portion of the earnings went toward the “Pay It Forward,” while USJ received the remaining amount to maintain its own beehive.

“This hive is a great learning tool for our students. They now have the opportunity to learn about bee anatomy, life cycles, behavior, and the importance of pollination, firsthand,” says Director of Community Outreach Pam Stanfield. “More importantly, students will be actively participating in an environmental and wellness project and understanding the impact and benefits of a ‘pay it forward’ fundraiser.”

USJ’s observation beehive was installed in the school’s Lower School Science Lab.

USJ Weekend USJ Weekend, hosted by the Alumni Association, began Thursday, April 19, with “Arts @ The U” sponsored by the Arts Guild.

On Friday, USJ hosted a luncheon in the Upper School Library for our parents of alumni, followed by our Softball Hall of Fame Presentation later in the afternoon. Saturday had beautiful weather for baseball, soccer, and softball games and a barbecue lunch with inflatables for the kids.

Everyone had fun supporting our Bruins as all three sports teams brought home the win! The following Monday, the first annual “Bruin Booster Classic” was held at the Jackson Country Club. All proceeds from this tournament benefited the USJ Bruins Club.

On April 23, the Bruins Club hosted the first annual Bruin Booster Classic golf tournament at the Jackson Country Club to benefit the USJ Super Boosters. This tournament featured 16 participating teams and sponsors for all 18 holes. The event included a putting contest, hole-in-one contest, a cannon shot where participants shot a golf ball out of a cannon, and par-3 poker. We raised $15,000 in support of the Middle School golf teams and are excited for this to be an annual spring event!

USJ Alumnus and Parent Named Board Chairman James Kirkland, USJ alumnus and parent, was officially named the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees on July 1, 2018.

James, who graduated from USJ in 1994, works with H&M Company in Jackson as a Senior Project Manager. He and his wife, Misty, have two children at USJ: Addy (Fourth) and Caroline (Kindergarten).

James is ready to take on this new position with the school saying, “We are in an exciting time for USJ as we continue to implement the 2016 Strategic Plan, and our fundamentals are as strong as ever. Through the leadership of our able administration and faculty in accomplishing our mission, our academic program is strong and continually improving, our art programs are excellent, and our athletic programs continue to see success on the highest levels. Our enrollment trends are positive, our finances are solid, and we are working hard to keep USJ as affordable and as accessible as possible for our community.”

James has served USJ in many capacities over the years. He worked as Director of Development and Alumni from 1999 to 2002, and has served on the board from 2008 to 2014 (first term) and is in the fourth year of a second term (tenth year overall). His history with USJ dates back to 1984 when he started at the school, along with his two brothers and sister who also graduated from USJ. His parents were both board members at one time as well.

“I am excited to work with James over the next two years as we implement the campus master plan and complete the goals of the strategic plan,” says Stuart Hirstein, Head of School. “James’ passion for USJ is unquestioned.

His vision for the school, tireless efforts in campus improvements, and leadership at the board level have been extraordinary. On a personal note, James has been a huge support to me as USJ’s Head of School, and I am proud to call him a trusted friend.”

“USJ exists today because parents wanted something more for their children, and the school continues to thrive on parent, grandparent, alumni, and alumni parent support of our mission and programs,” says James. “While mindful of the investment that was made by those who came before us, we are excited to get started implementing the new campus master plan to continue to improve our physical campus and to make it safer and more secure – all to the benefit of our mission and our students.”

Athletics N E W S Lady Bruins in Final Four at State Championship This past March, the Lady Bruins followed up last year’s runner-up season at State with another appearance in the Final Four. The team finished out their season with a 27-5 record. “As a coach, it’s a rewarding feeling to make it to the Final Four and see the team’s hard work pay off,” says Coach Tony Shutes.

Middle School Golf Teams Named District Champions After finishing the regular season 10-0 (boys) and 11-1 (girls) this past May, the Middle School Bruins won the district championship. Claire Henson (78) and Alex Campbell (78) received individual district medalist honors .

“I am very proud of both teams and all that they accomplished this season,” says Coach Shelby Sain.

“This was such a fun group to coach and I am very excited about the future of the USJ golf program knowing that this group will be a part of it!”

Baseball Team Places Third in State Tournament In May, the varsity boys’ baseball team finished its season with a record of 31-4, earning a regional title and thirdplace honors at the state tournament.

“We had a big group of seniors this year who have been with our program since they were eighth graders,” says Head Coach Jack Peel. “This group was very experienced and showed a lot of leadership. When it comes to a selfless, overachieving group of players, we couldn’t have asked for a better team than what we had this past year.

We had a great year with great players and parents.”

Hulme Named USJ’s First TSSAA Miss Basketball Award Recipient Senior Ashton Hulme was named 2018 Division II-A Miss Basketball winner this past March and is the first varsity women’s basketball player in USJ history to receive this award. “The feeling of winning is an honor because it means all of my hard work paid off,” says Ashton. “Not many girls will get to say they won Miss Basketball, but I do. It was definitely one of the happiest moments. Now, I can’t wait to get to Bethel and start doing great things!” Ashton finished her 2017-2018 season with 18.4 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game, 65% field goal percentage, 82% free throw percentage, and 2.1 steals per game.

Ashton has signed to play basketball at Bethel University this upcoming season.

Taylor Howell Selected to Sunbelt Classic This past May, current senior Taylor Howell was selected by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association to play in the 2018 Sunbelt Classic. Each year, the Sunbelt Classic brings the best players from eight states and Canada to compete against each other in a week-long tournament in McAlester, Oklahoma. Taylor had a total of 49 hits, 5 home runs, and 44 RBI for the season.

“Oklahoma was a great experience,” says Taylor. “I️ played with the top players in the country and made many new friends. It was awesome to see hundreds of people you have never seen before cheer for you. The town of McAlester lives for that week. It was cool to see everyone around you involved in the tournament. Amazing opportunity to play in the Sunbelt Classic.”

The Center assists students who might be missing critical academic skills; skills that are hindering their success in the classroom.

This is done by assessing each child’s unique needs and, based on those findings, providing research-proven remediation techniques. Each student’s program will be prescriptive in nature; tailored to help meet his/her personal academic goals as efficiently as possible.

How does this program work to better the school’s academic efforts?

Since the Center will aid in ensuring our students are able to function at their highest academic potential, a natural outcome will be an increase in students’ self-confidence, academic abilities, test scores, and college success stories.

What are the hours of the Academic Center?

Students are able to visit the Center during school hours. We are located in the Lower School on the fourth and fifth grade hall.

As Director, what are the goals you have set and what are you most excited about regarding the new program?

In five years, I would like to see a smaller percentage of our students above second grade who need basic academic skills remediation.

Another goal would be to see that our fifth grade students, as they head toward middle school, have better fluency in reading, writing, and basic math operations. When they enter sixth grade, they will be ready to learn and be the best versions of themselves.

Without question, I’m most excited about working with the kiddos. It is also exciting to have the opportunity to closely collaborate with parents and teachers. These partnerships are imperative to expedite a child’s success!

We have an amazing faculty and staff here at the U; all of whom are invested in the program and eager to see it work. Over the next five years, I could see other educators from West Tennessee visiting our Academic Center to learn how an efficient, successful, in-house learning center operates.

This contest is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Across the world, students of French in grades 1 - 12 take a written test and compete against students with similar educational backgrounds for prizes.

Seniors Receive Ned McWherter Scholarships Last spring, seniors Alden Caldwell, Camryn Coley, and Eli Garey were among 80 recipients awarded Ned McWherter Scholarships out of more than 1,500 applications statewide.

The Ned McWherter Scholars Program awards each student $6,000 per academic year, with $3,000 from the state of Tennessee and an additional $3,000 from the college or university the student selects to attend.

“Many highly qualified candidates throughout Tennessee applied to be a Ned McWherter Scholar, so we are happy to have three 2018 recipients,” says Carol Ryan, Director of College Advising. “In addition to taking challenging coursework and having high test scores, recipients are also scored on their extracurricular involvement and demonstrated leadership.

These students meet and exceed those criteria.”

We are pleased for these students to be recognized and honored for their hard work through this prestigious award.

Thesis Project Prepares Seniors for College Each year, Advanced Placement English Literature students accept the responsibility of writing and developing a 30-plus-page thesis. This process begins in January of their junior year and ends in April of the following year. This year’s topics ranged from Victorian women in literature to the importance of adolescence. Through this project, students prepare for the writing requirements they will face

at the collegiate level. Students work with advisors as they prepare to present their work to an audience. “Each student writes an analysis paper using at least four primary literary sources,” says USJ English Department Chair Bridget Clark, who teaches AP English Literature and Composition. “The process is a testament to the students and their willingness to work and be creative and disciplined at the same time.”

USJ Students Take Top Awards at the TMTA Competition This past April, twenty-five USJ students participated in the regional TMTA (Tennessee Math Teachers Association) Math Contest. USJ earned first- place team honors in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Calculus.

“It is always an honor to participate in the TMTA competition with our talented USJ math students,” says Upper School Mathematics Department Chair, Carla Roach. “Mary Anne Ward and I continually encourage student interest in math and foster their growth in this area. Our students are deeply competitive but also enjoy meeting students from other schools.”

8th Grade Trip to D.C. Last year’s eighth grade class was our first class to visit Gettysburg and the Amish Country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was a great success as students had the opportunity to see horse drawn buggies and workers in the field with plow horses.

From there, the students traveled to Washington, D.C. and attended the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a long-standing USJ tradition.

Elle Jerge, Gracen Rainey, James Mitchell, and Adam Tankersley participated in the ceremony. This was an impressive and poignant ceremony that left a lasting memory with our young people.

The trip ended with a visit to the “Rocky Steps” in Philadelphia, where students enjoyed racing to the top. The class then made their way to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Congress Hall before heading back home. “The class of 2022 experienced an amazing adventure on their 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. this past spring,” says Shay Young, Field Trip Coordinator.

“The decision made by our 8th grade teachers to visit Gettysburg, PA, the Amish Country, Philadelphia, PA, along with Washington, was the right move! It was an awesome experience for our students to explore these important historic sites of our great nation.”

Robotics Program in Lower School

USJ Alum Speaks to 7th Grade Science Class Alumna Jordan Ragon (’12) is a Special Agent Forensic Scientist at the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and spoke to our middle school science classes in February about her experience working with DNA

USJ’s Lower School implemented the use of robotics into the curriculum this past spring through the use of LEGO MINDSTORMS Education Sets. With the help of Science Lab Teacher Elizabeth Maloan, Lower School Technology Teacher Heidi McDaniel, and Director of Technology Kyle Hopper, this program teaches students the fundamentals of computer programming. The students learn by trial and error as they work to successfully move the robots they’ve built from point A to point B. Commands that make up their program on the Lego Creator software are fine-tuned by percentage of power distribution, degree of turn, time run, motor rotation count, or a combination of those inputs.

“The students enjoy what they’re learning and meet every obstacle with perseverance,” says Mr Hopper. “Rather than becoming discouraged when they face the challenges of programming, students rush back to their laptops to make adjustments and try again. As a teacher, it’s rewarding to have successfully taught them that it isn’t simply about completing each task the quickest way possible, but rather taking each step with focus.”

“Forensic science is something that I always thought was interesting,” says Jordan. “It wasn’t until after my first chemistry class that I realized science is a subject I enjoyed and could make a career out of. By my senior year, I knew that I wanted to pursue forensic science. So when I had the opportunity to take the first forensic science course at USJ, I jumped at it. During that course, I was able to take a field trip to the TBI Headquarters in Nashville. That’s when I knew my goal would be to become a forensic scientist for the TBI. I never expected to reach that goal so early in my career. I owe that in part to the teachers and courses at USJ that helped steer me and prepare me for my career.”

Two Students Recognized

by Honorary Band Lisa Nnaji and Amar Boparai were recognized and inducted into the Amro Music Honor Band this past May for their outstanding contribution to instrumental music in West Tennessee and to the band program at the University School of Jackson.

Theatre Students Win Orpheum High School Musical Awards This past April, USJ was nominated in eight different categories for The Orpheum’s ninth annual High School Musical Theatre Awards. This award ceremony included 29 schools from West Tennessee and Mississippi.

USJ took home the Outstanding Artistic Achievement award for the “rain on stage” in the school’s production of Singin’ in the Rain. Junior Jake Booher won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Cosmo Brown in Singin’ in the Rain and performed a special number with his fellow nominees. Junior Keaton Miller was nominated for Best Actor and was also the youngest nominee in the Lead Actor category. Students Gabrielle Evans, Jared Koerner, and Madison Maroney also represented the school as they performed in the opening and closing numbers of the awards ceremony.

“We were small fish in a big pond, up against schools that tripled us in size,” says Upper School Theatre Teacher Erica Davidson. “The fact that we were competing against them in eight different categories was pretty phenomenal. I was proud to be amongst schools in that caliber.”

Congratulations to these students, Musical Director Dr. Tammy Grant, faculty members, Tom Grant, Erica Davidson, Bryce King, Jimmy Glosson, and the cast of Singin’ in the Rain for these incredible achievements.

The Branchman Selected to Perform at SETC’s Theatre for Youth Invitational Festival This past March, the theatre department was invited to perform at this year’s Southeastern Theatre Conference’s Theatre For Youth Festival in Mobile, Alabama. The annual SETC Convention brings over 4,000 members of the theatre community together for three and a half days of workshops, keynotes, performance festivals, auditions, college recruiting, and job interviews.

USJ’s selected performance, The Branchman, was written and directed by Senior Harrison Hamm. “We were so excited to have the opportunity to perform this incredible show at such a prestigious festival,” says Upper School Theatre Teacher Erica Davidson.

“We were disappointed when it was over because the cast had become more like family. This will be a great reunion, a lasting memory.”

Arts @ The U It was another successful year for our annual student art exhibit, Arts @ The U. Sponsored by the Arts Guild, Arts @ The U provides our performing and visual art students the opportunity to showcase their talents as it features musical performances and artwork from all three divisions.

This year, our Lower School students were able to participate and showcase their art as well. “It was exciting to see the Lower School students represented at Arts @ The U,” says Lower School Art Teacher Darlene Tanner.

Pride and Prejudice This past April, the Upper and Middle school students joined together to perfrom one of Jane Austen’s classics, Pride and Prejudice, adapted by Jon Jory from Playscripts, Inc. The show was a romantic comedy about a young, prideful man of noble birth who finds love in a common girl with many prejudices against the world.

A special thank you to our theatre teacher, Erica Davidson, for directing during the shows and for the countless hours she spent constructing the sets for this play.

Singin’ in the Rain

Come on with the rain! This March’s production of Singin’ in the Rain received eight award nominations and two High School Musical Theatre awards. Congratulations to the cast and Musical Director Dr. Tammy Grant!

This May, the stage in Blankenship Theater was transformed into a street in Agrabah when the Performing Arts department presented Aladdin JR.

The story follows the careers of 1920’s actors during the transition from silent films to talking pictures. Keaton Miller, who played Don Lockwood says that his favorite memory was “dancing under the water for the first time because seeing everyone’s faces light up with excitement was the best feeling.”

Dr. Tammy Grant, Middle and Upper School Musical Director led the cast of 42 students in grades sixth through ninth, and were joined by 27 students from the Lower School. Sophomore Keaton Miller choreographed, while students Jake Booher, Meg Miller, Baker Northern, and Lily Calloway supervised backstage.

The sets were designed and constructed by Mrs. Erica Davidson and her theatre students.

Color of Music 2018 Congratulations to the following students for having artwork selected to represent USJ in the Color of Music Art Contest.

The contest is sponsored by The Jackson Symphony and encourages students to use music as inspiration for artwork. The selections this year were “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey and “More Than a Feeling” by Boston.

Our students competed with students from all across West Tennessee, and they were honored at a reception at the Civic Center on April 7.

“The USJ students enjoyed listening to The Jackson Symphony’s music and using their imaginations to create beautiful artwork,” says Lower School Art Teacher, Darlene Tanner.

After its fifth year in production, our 2018 Junior Kindergarten class was the last group of students to perform the musical Squirm! this past April. This class is the youngest group of students to perform on stage and present a full musical. For most, this is their first experience performing in front of an audience.

“With Junior Kindergarten, each child is given a speaking role and has the opportunity to speak into the microphone, which is a skill in and of itself,” says Leslie Scott, Jr. Cubs through 1st grade Music Teacher. “We believe strongly in the incredible benefits of our musicals. Through their participation, students learn teamwork, public speaking, cooperation, and confidence. We believe our Arts program beautifully rounds out an excellent education for our students.”

Don Roe Graduates from TAIS Program Middle School Director Don Roe graduated from the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools New and Emerging Leaders Institute this past spring.

The NELI program is a leadership development program that trains those in leadership positions on effective communication, leadership styles, tackling difficult situations, and more. This year-long program allowed for personal connections and networking amongst the 11 graduates.

“My first year as Middle School Director has been a great year but also a learning experience,” says Don. “To be given the opportunity to develop as a leader through networking and personal connections is a tremendous blessing. It was a valuable experience to get to work with those who hold a similar position to mine and share ideas, perspectives, and advice on how to better perform as leaders in education.

I am thankful to feel such strong support from USJ as they assist in my professional development efforts.”

Holly Stroup Named Lower School Assistant Director and Early Education Coordinator This fall, Holly Stroup is moving out of the classroom to serve as the new Lower School Assistant Director and Early Childhood Coordinator. Holly has served as one of our third-grade teachers and looks forward to stepping into an administrative position. She assumed this new role after the retirement of Beth Hudson on June 30.

Holly will be responsible for the day-to-day operations in the Early Childhood department as well as work in our Lower School division with Lower School Director Louise Dunn in the areas of curriculum, operations, and decision making.

“I am so excited to welcome Holly Stroup to our school leadership team here at the Lower School. Her energy and upbeat positive approach to life will fit perfectly with the USJ community,” says Louise Dunn.

Coach Shutes’ 500 Career Win In February, Coach Tony Shutes celebrated his 500th career win. “It was an honor to be recognized; it simply means that I work with a lot of good players and am at a good school,” says Coach Shutes. “It was amazing to have all the players come back to help celebrate.

Having the chance to hear them tell their stories of how they learned much more than just the game of basketball was more important than the 500 wins. As our Athletic Director, Jody Evans, tells us all the time, ‘it’s about building relationships.’”

“I can say unequivocally that Coach Shutes’ commitment and dedication to his players, to his coaching staff, to USJ and to this community is incomparable,” says Head of School Stuart Hirstein. “His 500 wins are a milestone and a true testament of his coaching skill and perseverance. Better than his basketball IQ is his humility and spirit. We are fortunate to have had Coach Shutes for as long as we have, and I am proud to call him a friend.”

Hamilton Hudson Named New Boys’ Basketball Coach Hamilton Hudson was selected as our new boys’ basketball coach at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Mr. Hudson is from West Tennessee and graduated from Gibson County High School. He spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Dyer County.

“I hope to bring a lot of team-oriented offense, defense, energy, a lot of intensity”, says Mr. Hudson. “I’m obviously young, enthusiastic, and can really relate well to the players and bring in a successful attitude.”

“Hamilton stood out in the interview process for a variety of reasons,” says Athletic Director Jody Evans. “First, he was familiar with USJ’s mission statement which entails excellence in every aspect of school life. Also, he’s a young energetic coach with a high basketball IQ who teaches the fundamentals of the game, and that’s where it starts. Most importantly, the positive lasting relationships he’s built with former players was something I couldn’t ignore. A lot of times coaches call or email on behalf of other coaches when applying for jobs. It is rare when former players do it and the amount I got on Hamilton’s behalf was amazing. That’s the kind of person we want leading our teams.

We found all that in Hamilton and look forward to many successful seasons.”

Russ Ellis Named Chief Development Officer In April, Russ Ellis joined us as our new Chief Development Officer. Mr. Ellis’ fundraising/ development career spans over 21 years and includes leadership roles at the American Heart Association, Lambuth University, ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and most recently as the Executive Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (West TN Chapter), where he led all significant donor cultivation efforts.

As Chief Development Officer, Mr. Ellis will work closely with our Director of Development, Ron Kirkland, and Assistant Director of Development, Cathy Garrett, to create and implement a shortand long-term advancement plan to meet development goals and objectives and cultivate relationships with key constituents.

Mr. Ellis will also work to promote support for a quality education as well as foster excitement for fundraising efforts. He along with Cathy Garrett will oversee the management of gift processing and donor acknowledgment. Mr. Ellis shares his enthusiasm for his new role saying, “It’s an exciting time to be part of the USJ family.

In the coming years, cutting edge transformation in the classroom and on the beautiful grounds of our campus will continue to enhance the student body experience.”

Retirements Phyllis Gayton Second Grade Teacher

Phyllis Gayton​retired after 30 years of serving USJ as a second-grade teacher.

“I have been blessed with so many wonderful friends, not only faculty but students and their families who have kept in touch with me throughout the years.” Ten years ago, Mrs. Gayton’s second grade class planted a tree outside her classroom in remembrance of her father, Joseph Zemer, who had just passed away. On April 25, 2018, those same USJ students who helped plant that special tree returned to Mrs. Gayton’s classroom to not only celebrate their graduation but her retirement.

Phyllis and her husband Bill vacationed this summer with their children Colleen and Jeff and their families. Phyllis looks forward to spending lots of quality time with her four grandsons Grand, Aiden, Cade, and Seth. She also attended a family reunion in her home town of Olean, New York with her two sisters and their families. Phyllis and her husband Bill celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on August 4.

Linda Hawks Upper School English and Honors Teacher, Yearbook

Linda Hawks retired after 12 years of teaching literature and grammar to USJ students. Ms. Hawks not only improved her students’ foundation in the English language, but she also imparted wisdom to every freshman whose life she has touched.

“I have been honored and blessed to be a part of the USJ community for the past twelve years,” says Linda. “The faculty, staff, and students are among the best I have had the opportunity to work with in my career. I will miss them all.”

Beth Hudson Early Childhood Director

Beth Hudson retired after serving USJ for 15 years. Beth began her journey with USJ as a Pre-Kindergarten assistant.

She then became a Kindergarten teacher before fulfilling her role as Early Childhood Director. “My time at USJ has been the cherry on top of a fantastic career in education,” says Beth. “I am truly blessed for the opportunities I’ve received and to have been surrounded by such wonderful faculty, students, and parents over the past 15 years.”

Upon retiring, Beth planned to spend more time traveling to Hot Springs, Arkansas with her husband and to Collierville to visit her two grandchildren. She also took several trips, one of which includes Disney World with her grandchildren.

Sarah Pate Kindergarten Teacher

Sarah Pate retired after serving USJ for 26 years as a Kindergarten teacher. “I have been blessed with many wonderful students, parents, and co-workers,” says Sarah. “Teaching kindergarten is so much fun and so rewarding. The kids want to come to school; they are eager to learn and give great hugs!”

Sarah has planned several trips to places like Hoyland, England; Edisto Island, South Carolina; and Indiana. She hopes to spend more quality time with her mother and siblings 20

in North Carolina while also visiting her grandchildren.

Following her trips, she looks forward to playing golf with her husband, joining a cooking club, volunteering, and even making herself available on the “sub” and tutor list at USJ. Amber Anderson Pre-Kindergarten Teacher

Amber Anderson retired from teaching after 26 years at USJ. “I feel as if I’ve grown up with USJ,” says Amber. “It’s been my home since I was 23 years old.

I’ve worked with such great parents, faculty, and students over the years and have received a wonderful education on how to be a successful teacher. It’s a blessing to be a part of the USJ family for not only the friendships but the connections within the community as well. I am grateful for the opportunity to have touched a number of little lives!”

Amber has planned to visit her daughter, Krista, in West Hollywood, California next summer. She and her husband, Jason, will be taking their vintage camper across the state of California to visit places like the Redwood Forest. Her dream is to travel across the United States in a tiny home and land somewhere near the ocean.

Karen Harris Teacher’s Assistant for Cubs

Karen Harris retired from teaching after serving USJ for 16 years. She began her teaching career with kindergarten before moving to pre-kindergarten and finishing her career in the three-yearold class. “I started teaching when my youngest child started kindergarten,” says Karen. “It’s a harder job than most people think but more rewarding than I had ever imagined. My teaching career balanced my lifestyle as a mom and teacher. I am grateful for the lifelong friendships I made and will miss the big leaping hugs from the children.”

Karen began her summer with a June wedding for her son.

She hopes to visit her youngest son, Chase, at the University of Memphis and regularly attend his golf tournaments. Karen is looking forward to the adventures her new season of life has in store.

Patsy Hollman Fourth Grade Teacher

Patsy Hollman retired from teaching after 13 years of service to USJ. She began her career teaching first grade and has enjoyed the experience of working with many different students. “I will miss the children and families as I’ve loved getting to know them over the years,” says Patsy. “They have become close friends, and I’ve had the opportunity to see these students through high school and hear what they’re doing as adults. As an alumna of OHA and a mother of three USJ graduates, the school has been such a big part of my life and the lives of my children. It was an incredible experience that I will always cherish.”

Patsy is now selling real estate with Hickman Realty Group and is also a selling agent for her husband Jim’s construction company, Hollman Construction Company. She enjoys being involved in the Jackson community, meeting new people, and is excited to see that so many are looking to make Jackson their home.

Alumni Updates Congratulations to Andrew Long (‘05) who recently graduated from the 2018 WestStar Leadership Program. Andrew, Regional President at Community Bank in Jackson, currently serves as a board member for the Jackson-Madison County Boys and Girls Club, Jackson Exchange Club and One Jackson Civic Master Plan Implementation Committee. He is a recipient of the Jewel Award and the Emerging Leader Award by the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association.

Andrew is a Leadership Jackson graduate.

Elizabeth Joyner (’12) graduated from Union University in 2016. She moved to Las Vegas, NV in June 2016 to help with the plant of The Well Church. She currently leads their Children’s Ministry and also teaches 4th grade at John Tartan Elementary School in North Las Vegas.

Kelsey Sanders (‘15) graduated cum laude from LSU’s Ogden Honors College with a major in History and a minor in Spanish. She will be attending Belmont Law School on the Bruin Scholarship, a scholarship that covers all three years of law school tuition.

Kayla Puzdrakiewicz (’17) is a sophomore at Rhodes College, majoring in Chemistry.

She spent a few weeks in Thailand last May with Rhodes Summer: Buddhism in Thai Society. Kayla was based in Chiang Mai working towards her minor in Religious Studies.

Madison Perchik (‘15) received the William Spandow Scholarship in Chemistry presented by Rhodes College’s Department of Chemistry and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society as a junior.

Madison is a Chemistry major, minoring in Spanish and Religious Studies.

She is in the process of applying to medical school.

Mattie Boyd (’14) is a 2018 graduate of Rhodes College with a Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts. She received the prestigious Sally Becker Grinspan Award for Artistic Achievement at the college’s annual Awards Convocation.

Mattie was selected by Rhodes to attend an art workshop at the Anderson Ranch in the summer of 2017. While at Rhodes, Mattie was a Rhodes Ambassador, worked with the development and alumni relations departments and interned with the Gibson Guitar Museum. Mattie plans to apply to graduate school while working in Memphis in the arts community.

Matthew Smith (‘15), a junior at Rhodes College, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society last spring. Matthew is majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in Religious Studies and is in the process of applying to medical school.

WEDDINGS Parks Williamson (’03) and Ann Marie Graham (’09) were married on October 14, 2017 and are residing in Jackson. After working as an accountant in Nashville, Parks moved home in order to run his family’s farming operation in Trimble, Tennessee. Ann Marie works as both an artist and Art Director for Curated American Artists - a company that sells art to big box retailers such as Kirkland’s and Hobby Lobby. They are looking forward to their honeymoon in Greece.

Lee Mayhall (’12) and Whitney Rivers were married on January 6, 2018 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Green Hills and celebrated with a reception at The Cordelle in downtown Nashville.

They honeymooned at the Excellence El Carmen resort in the Dominican Republic.

Lee and Whitney met at the University of North Alabama and still reside in Florence, Alabama where Lee started a non-profit inner-city ministry, Common Ground Shoals, and Whitney works for Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Group.

Edward Hockaday (’12) and Kara Crenshaw were married on January 13, 2018 at the Botanical Gardens in Knoxville, Tennessee. They honeymooned in Guatemala at Lake Atitlan and in Antigua.

Both graduates of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, they now live in Chattanooga, Tennessee where Edward is an electrical engineer for Burns & McDonnell and Kara is a logistics planner at Covenant Transport.

Jake Overbey (’11) and Hillary Ross (’10), were married in Jackson on April 7, 2018. After honeymooning in the Bahamas, Hillary and Jake returned to Jackson, Mississippi, where Jake works for BancorpSouth and Hillary is a Speech Language Pathologist with Beyond Therapy for Kids.

Victoria Parchman (’99) married Frazier Abraham on April 21, 2018 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Indianola, Sunflower County, Mississippi. Victoria and her son, Arthur Burton Crews, a USJ student for eight years, have relocated to Indianola where Frazier is the third generation to work in his 63-year-old family business, Abraham’s, an upscale department store. Victoria will join Abraham’s to create the online store and continue with The Old Country Store’s Catering Department in creative design.

They planned an adventurous honeymoon this past summer.

He is survived by OHA Alumni Sanna Welles Tucker (’85) and children Jackson and Mary Mitchell Tucker of Franklin, Tennessee.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Elizabeth Driver (OHA ’83) who passed away March 24, 2018. Elizabeth was a member of the chorus and a cheerleader at Old Hickory Academy. She graduated from the Kerklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. with a degree in Music Therapy. Elizabeth is survived by her mother, Gertrude Driver, brother, Todd and his wife, Lee Driver, and nieces, Blair and Ellen Driver and nephew Wallace Driver, who are students at USJ. 22

Alum Ryan Rolison Drafted by Colorado Rockies This past June, Ryan Rolison (’16) was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the 22nd pick in the first round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. The selection came as Ole Miss was playing Tennessee Tech in the Oxford Regional. “I really had no idea where I was going to go,” says Ryan. “I was focused on the team and rooting them on. I went back and one of the managers told me that the Rockies had just selected me. It was a surreal moment with my teammates.”

Ryan went 10-4 this season for the Rebels with a 3.70 ERA and 120 strikeouts. While at USJ, Ryan was named All-West Tennessee Baseball Pitcher of the Year as a senior in 2016. He went 9-0 with a 0.12 ERA and 108 strikeouts his senior year. Ryan was overwhelmed by the support he received after being drafted saying, “It means a lot to me that so many people cared to reach out and congratulate me on a special day. I’m so thankful for those people.”

Alumna Leah Sanders Works in Thailand as Field Engineer Leah Sanders (‘14) recently graduated from LSU, where she served as Student Body Government Vice President her senior year, with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Upon completing her three-month training this fall in Abu Dhabi, she will be based in Hat Yai, Thailand as a field engineer for Schlumberger, the largest oil field service in the world.

It employs 100,000+ people and operates in more than 85 countries. Leah specializes in wireline services on offshore rigs in the Gulf of Thailand and surrounding areas.

“I am so grateful to the USJ curriculum and particularly the Costa Rica trip led by Señor Glosson for the passion it instilled in me for travel and immersion in new cultures,” she says. “I would not have been able to prove to myself that I was brave enough to fully immerse myself in another culture. I look forward to using those same skills in the future in Thailand.”

USJ Alum Receives Fulbright Award Blair McElroy (‘98) serves as the interim senior international officer and director of the study abroad program at Ole Miss. This past year, Blair received a Fulbright award to South Korea to create a stronger connection between the university and the country.

This grant allowed her to attend a two-week International Education Administrators seminar in June.

“I am delighted and proud to have been selected as one of the eight grantees,” says Blair. “It was exciting to experience the Korean culture firsthand as part of a group of passionate individuals in the field of international education.”

The seminar typically includes a week around Seoul, South Korea, visiting universities, institutions, and historical and cultural sites.

The second week is generally spent outside Seoul.

Upon her return, Blair says she will pursue the goals outlined in her project statement: implementation of workshops for faculty and staff on intercultural communication and partnerships in Korea, development of faculty-led programs to Korea, and support of events where domestic and Korean students can connect.

Q & A with Alum Brent Truell (’98) Tell us a little about your work at Microsoft.

I’m in my 13th year at the company. I started as a software engineering intern during summer breaks in college and joined shortly after graduation. I currently work in the Azure Cloud computing group focused on blockchain, an emerging disruptive technology we believe will be very important to people and organizations in the years to come. My team focuses on product development and enabling our leading edge customers to be successful on our platform. Outside of my day job, I help support the Microsoft Autism Hiring program as a manager and mentor.

What is the autism hiring program and why was it established?

Our mission is to empower every person on the planet to achieve more. There are more than a billion disabled people in the world today, so it’s imperative for organizations to make accessibility, diversity, and inclusion part of their process for developing products and services. 80% of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder are currently unemployed. We recognized this untapped talent pool of those who have the skills we seek to help us achieve our mission.

How has your USJ background properly prepared you for your position at Microsoft?

USJ has had a profound impact on my life. As I have grown older and had kids of my own, I recognize the importance of providing a safe environment for kids to learn. The most important thing we can teach kids today to prepare them for the world tomorrow is how to learn. This was the gift I was blessed with from the teachers, coaches, administration, and the families that made up the USJ community when I was there.

University School of Jackson’s success might best be characterized through our tradition of a strong academic program and co-curricular opportunities for our students.

Our commitment to improving an already robust program was realized with our launching of a new strategic plan in August 2016 entitled Inspiring Learning and Leadership. This bold plan will guide us in the coming years and provide a roadmap for USJ’s future.

The educational landscape is changing rapidly. We know more today because of things like brain research and the impact technology has on our classroom environment.

We are facilitating conversations amongst our faculty, staff, and board around topics like pedagogy, curriculum development, and campus master planning. If the educational landscape is evolving, we want USJ to be seen as a leader, and we definitely want a seat at the national table.

Our strategic plan has priorities that are conducive to this change: • E nhance and refine our academic program to best in class standards in the Southeastern United States.

Your generosity this past year helped us complete the soccer wall project and remodel the early childhood playground to include much-needed shade for our little ones. Why do you give to the Annual Fund?

We see our giving as an investment in our child’s education. Through our investment in the Annual Fund, we have the opportunity to enjoy the school’s new facilities, primarily the library renovation project in which our son will greatly benefit from and enjoy. We can also use our investment to help attract other families interested in quality education the way we are.

•U nrestricted Giving: Gifts to the Annual Fund offset USJ’s greatest need for extra support. The Annual Fund’s unrestricted giving allows the school to decide how to use the money and keep school tuition affordable.

•R estricted Giving takes on many forms at USJ. For example, this past year, donations purchased library materials in memory of a loved one, helped pay for upkeep of the prayer garden, and bought walkway bricks in honor of someone they considered special. Restricted Giving also includes funds to USJ’s several endowments, planned giving, and to our parent support groups.

Arts Guild The Arts Guild supports USJ’s visual and performing arts. A steering committee administers the operational affairs of the Guild and gives the Fine Arts Department financial resources and volunteer support. Our main financial support is through families who become Patrons of the Arts and our Arts Guild Corporate Partners. Our funds help pay for theater productions and other fine arts events, provide scholarships for summer enrichment, buy supplies and equipment, and advertise our productions and fine arts achievements. The Bruins Club generates funds through our annual Super Booster campaign, concessions, and special events, such as program ads, tournaments, and stadium sponsor signs.

The Bruins Club is committed to all USJ athletic programs, dedicating funds to a variety of capital improvement projects over the past years. We also contribute to the annual budget and help with special projects.

Each family is urged to become a Super Booster and to volunteer in the concession stands and for other projects.
