On Oc tob er 30, 2017, Fra nc i Ta ylor, PhD, Direc tor, Am eric a n Ind ia n Resourc e Center, p resented Na tive Voic es: Myths, Fa c ts a nd the Rea lity of Sub sta nc e Ab use in Am eric a n Ind ia n Com m unities. This d isc ussion foc used on the m yths, fa c ts, a nd the rea lity of sub sta nc e a b use in Am eric a n Ind ia n c om m unities from a c ultura l a nthrop olog y p ersp ec tive. The 2017-2018 yea r c ulm ina ted w ith the a nnua l Am eric a n Ind ia n Honoring a nd Gra d ua tion Cerem ony. Held on Ma y 3, 2018, this yea r's c erem ony c eleb ra ted the g ra d ua tion of 36 Na tive Am eric a n/ Ala ska n Na tive g ra d ua tes. Over 200 fa m ily m em b ers, c om m unity m em b ers, a nd U of U Hea lth c ollea g ues c a m e out to c eleb ra te the a c c om p lishm ents of these g ra d ua tes. This yea r there w ere 7 Na tive Am eric a n / Ala ska n Am eric a ns g ra d ua ting from a hea lth sc ienc e p rog ra m . The g ra d ua tes w ere Na tha niel Cord ova , Nic ole Mend enha ll, Nic ole Jensen (Colleg e of Pha rm a c y), Cha lm er Ga m b ler, Ra lyn Montoya (Hea lth Prom otion a nd Ed uc a tion), Sheld on Beg a y (Pa rks a nd Rec rea tion), La ne Brid g es (Kinesiolog y). LGBTQIA FOCUS The Offic e of Hea lth Eq uity a nd Inc lusion's m ission sup p orts the c om p a ssiona te d elivery of hea lth c a re to a ll p ersons. Efforts tow a rd s hea lth eq uity for the Lesb ia n Ga y Bisexua l Tra nsg end er Queer XX YY (LGBTQIA) c om m unity is integ ra l to OHEI's m ission. OHEI offers op p ortunities for the U of U Hea lth c om m unity to eng a g e a nd lea rn a b out the uniq ue c ha lleng es fa c ing this c om m unity a s they rec eive hea lth c a re, to sup p ort the d evelop m ent a nd a c hievem ent of q ua lity c a re b est p ra c tic es, a nd p a rtic ip a te in c om m unity-w id e reg iona l events. U of U Hea lth Ed uc a tion a nd Tra ining OHEI p a rtners w ith the University of Uta h's LGBTQIA Resourc e Center to p rovid e a 3-hour Continuing Med ic a l Ed uc a tion a c c red ited c ourse for fa c ulty a nd sta ff of U of U Hea lth. The c ourse foc uses on the d elivery of eq uita b le hea lth c a re servic es for LGBTQIA ind ivid ua ls b y p resenting a p p rop ria te term inolog y, d isc ussing uniq ue hea lth need s, introd uc ing non-b ina ry g end er id entities a nd non-b ina ry hea lth c a re p ra c tic es, a nd outlining inc lusive a p p roa c hes to m eet the hea lth c a re need s of LGBTQIA p a tients. U of U Hea lth Clinic a l Colla b ora tions Tra nsgender Workgroup: OHEI sha red c onc erns noted b y p a tients a nd stud ents tha t tra nsg end er p a tients w ere not rec eiving c a re a t U of U Hea lth b ec a use g end er in EPIC w a s d efined a s b ina ry. A Workg roup w a s esta b lished w ithin U of U Hea lth to a d d ress these c onc erns. OHEI is a m em b er of the Workg roup w hic h m oved forw a rd in 2017 w ith efforts to a d d ress p referred na m e in EPIC. The c urrent w ork foc uses on w orking w ith EPIC to c ollec t g end er d a ta b eyond the b ina ry a nd to d o so a c ross a ll a sp ec ts of the hea lth system . The Tra nsgender Hea lth Progra m: OHEI sup p orts the d evelop m ent of the Prog ra m a nd its visib ility in the c om m unity. The Prog ra m p resented a t the Sex

OHEI eng a g ed tw o stud ents in the Ma ster in Hea lth Ad m inistra tion Prog ra m (Ariel Ma la n a nd Ga b riela Ga rc ia ) a s interns to a ssist in a n evid enc e-b a sed d irec tion for the Tra nsg end er Hea lth Prog ra m a t the University of Uta h Hea lth b a sed on b est p ra c tic e p rotoc ols to ensure LGBTQ a ffirm a tive c a re. The stud ents w orked c losely w ith Dr. Cori Ag a rw a l a nd Dr. Joa nne Rolls to c ond uc t b enc hm a rking interview s w ith na tiona l lea d ers a nd d efine rec om m end a tions to m eet na tiona l sta nd a rd s for LGBTQ hea lth. The ra tiona le for this w ork w a s b a sed on the US Tra ns Survey's d oc um ented p erva sive hea lth c a re risks a nd d isp a rities. As a n exa m p le, na tiona lly, 40% of tra nsg end er p eop le ha ve a ttem p ted suic id e in their lifetim e, This is nine tim es the ra te of the US p op ula tion overa ll[1] . In Uta h, 34% of resp ond ents rep orted a neg a tive exp erienc e w ith a hea lth c a re p rovid er b ec a use of their tra ns id entity [2] . These d a ta justify a d elib era te effort to im p rove c a re for this p op ula tion. Rec om m end a tions p resented inc lud ed p a rtic ip a tion in the Hea lthc a re Eq ua lity Ind ex, a na tiona l sta nd a rd for hea lth c a re org a niza tions striving to im p rove the hea lth of LGBTQ p op ula tions; d evelop ing a c om m unity a d visory b oa rd to b ring voic es of tra nsg end er a nd g end er non-c onform ing p eop le to the forefront; a nd the need for d ed ic a ted p rog ra m sta ff, to ena b le follow -up on these efforts a nd a id in the future d irec tion of the p rog ra m .
