Certification Tracks Clinical Excellence through Graduate Education
Seminars Offered Nationwide The University of St. Augustine (USA) established Manual Therapy Certification (MTC) in 1981. USA has long held that continuing education should be structured toward a meaningful goal. After a group of therapists who had completed the series of manual therapy seminars asked to be examined, MTC was developed. MTC is a process by which a Physical Therapist attends a series of 7 prerequisite seminars which culminates into a week long rigorous review and testing of all areas. Tests include written, oral and practical components which measure the competency of the individuals. Upon successful completion of all areas demonstrating a safe level of competency according to standards established by USA, the PT is issued a Manual Therapy Certification certificate and is able to use the “MTC letters after their name indicating the earned specialization. The University has since added several other specialty certifications including Sports Physical Therapy, Cranio Facial Certification and Primary Care Certification. Please see the back cover to learn more about seminar requirements for each individual certification.
Once a certification has been earned, evidence of continuing professional development is required in order to maintain use of the certification letters. Over a 24-month period, the therapist is expected to maintain either full or part-time clinical practice and meet one or more of the following activities: • • • • • • •
30 hours (3.0 CEU) of continuing education attendance every 2 years. These seminars may be any physical therapy practice management area, not just manual therapy. Publication of article(s) in a peer-reviewed journal. This could be a research study, position paper, clinical pearl, etc. APTA Credentialed Residency or Fellowship Successful completion of the ABPTS certification examination. Advanced degree coursework (3 credits over 24 months). Development and/or teaching of a seminar. Development and/or teaching of a rehabilitation-related course in a degree-granting program.
