Health and Social Care BSc(Hons) / MSci Your course This course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to meet the rapidly expanding and changing environment in health and social care. From looking at how to assess needs to being introduced to law, social policy, assessment and care planning. You’ll explore your own values in relation to working with diverse groups, and engage in becoming a reflective practitioner.

You’ll be taught by a supportive and experienced teaching team who have worked in a range of health and social care roles. They’ll use their expertise to bring their teaching to life with real-life case studies. Personal and professional development, leadership and international perspectives are keen components of this course, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills and putting you in a good position for both the UK and international jobs market.

There is an option to study this course as an integrated Master’s degree, combining both undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single four-year degree.

Health and Social Care MSci

Taking a hands-on approach, you’ll have the opportunity to put your theoretical skills into practice through undertaking a work placement. This will support and enhance your learning, increase your future employability prospects and give you the chance to make useful contacts in industry so that you can reach your full potential.

Your future This course aims to give you the knowledge, understanding and core skills required to pursue a wide range of careers in a variety of statutory or non-statutory, community or residential health and social care settings. Graduates might go onto work for drug and alcohol services, housing agencies, domestic violence services, disability and wellbeing services, teaching, and relevant Master’s courses such as Social Work and Nursing.

Midwifery Studies BSc(Hons) Your course Our Midwifery Studies degree is designed to help you become a competent, confident and autonomous practitioner with the knowledge and skills to pursue a successful career. Learning from experienced midwives and gaining real-world experience in a variety of healthcare settings will prepare you to make a difference in the lives of women and their families.

We know just how important it is for midwives to learn about midwifery in context, gain a broad perspective on the delivery of care and be supported by enthusiastic lecturers who know exactly what it’s like to be a midwife.

Across all areas of teaching, we focus on the promotion of normality, health and the safe management of pregnancy to ensure the best possible outcomes for parents and the newborn. We’ll also help you learn how to provide individualised care for the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labour, childbirth and the early days of parenthood.

Midwifery Studies ­BSc(Hons)

Placements Gaining clinical experience is key to your professional development. It’s also vital to develop an understanding of how to work in a team alongside other healthcare professionals. That’s why the course includes clinical practice, where you’ll work across a range of settings including birth centres, midwife-led units, labour suites, antenatal/ postnatal wards, as well as in the community.

In our fully equipped simulated ward, you’ll have the opportunity to put what you’ve learnt into practice in a safe environment using our range of patient simulators.

You’ll explore all aspects of nursing, from the fundamentals of providing care to more advanced topics such as complex needs and leadership and management. You’ll develop a range of specialist skills including communication, decision-making, team working and upholding professional values, as well as practical and theoretical skills in order to help you achieve your full potential as an adult nurse and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Standards.

Nursing (Child) BSc(Hons) Your course From the very start of this course, you’ll get the chance to develop the vital skills you need to care for children, young people and their families whatever their circumstances, including those with acute illness, long-term conditions or those who need help to maintain their health.

You’ll learn and develop both practical and theoretical skills in order to achieve your full potential as a children’s nurse and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) standards. You’ll get the chance to develop your practical skills in a safe environment in our fully-equipped simulated children’s ward using our patient simulators.

After successfully completing the course you’ll be able to apply to register with the NMC and work as a Registered Nurse for Children. The course also covers how to respond to the needs of patients and service users from all fields of adult, learning disability and mental health nursing.

Nursing (Learning Disability) BSc(Hons) Your course Learning disability nursing involves working with people who have a range of learning disabilities, providing hands-on care in relation to a person’s complex physical, social and psychological needs. Learning disability nurses work in a number of settings, including the individual’s own home, schools, respite units, hospitals and secure services. They work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, learning how to respond to the needs of someone with a learning disability.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop a high level of personal and technical skills to help improve the quality of life of people with a learning disability and their ability to live as independently as possible. You’ll also learn how to work in partnership with service users, their families, carers and other professionals to promote health and wellbeing.

Your future The career opportunities within learning disability nursing are constantly evolving and our graduates are now working as nurses in healthcare trusts and the independent sector.** You could provide person-centred support in specialist roles such as epilepsy, safeguarding, autism, behaviour, forensics, palliative care, mental health or complex needs. Other roles could include working as a manager, prescriber, educator, policy maker and consultant nurse.

Nursing (Mental Health) BSc(Hons) Your course Do you have patience, empathy and excellent listening skills? Are you interested in caring for the mind and the body? If you’re looking for a career in nursing where you can work with people of all ages across a variety of settings, then our Nursing (Mental Health) degree could be a great place to start your journey.

Mental health nursing involves working with people experiencing mental health difficulties, along with their families and carers. Nurses assess, plan, treat and review to support people towards their recovery. Conditions that people can experience include anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, dementia, personality disorder and psychosis.

Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) Your course Occupational therapists work collaboratively with people to enable them to engage in those activities (occupations) which they need or want to do, empowering them to lead fulfilling and healthy lives.

Occupations are practical and purposeful activities that allow people to live independently and have a sense of identity for example self-care, work or leisure tasks.

Working with people of all ages in a variety of practice areas, you’ll assess an individual’s needs, devise treatment and provide interventions to maximise quality of life.

You’ll learn how to integrate underlying theory and principles of occupational therapy and apply what you learn to different areas of practice. We’ve also got a purpose-built skills lab where you’ll be taught by research active and passionate academics who have a range of occupational therapy experience.

Occupational therapists work interprofessionally alongside other healthcare professionals, therefore you’ll study one module with students from other healthcare professions.

Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons) Your course Do you like the idea of working in a dramatic and exciting environment, where you’ll be part of a dynamic team in an operating theatre? Then perioperative practice could be a great career option if you want to open up a whole host of opportunities for your future.

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists and other medical staff to provide care for patients at all stages of the surgical process.

On this course you’ll explore what’s involved in the three interconnected aspects of the role: anaesthetic, surgical and post anaesthetic. You’ll have the opportunity to practise your skills in our simulated operating theatre, enabling you to experience the operating theatre environment.

You’ll be supported in your learning by academic staff and qualified practitioners who understand what it’s like to be an ODP. As the course progresses, you’ll move beyond the fundamentals to delve into the role research plays in perioperative practice and explore leadership and management strategies.

BSc(Hons) Your course Are you fascinated by how our muscles, joints and bones work together to make us move? On our Physiotherapy degree you’ll get the chance to delve into all the science behind the practice and build the skills and understanding you need to work in this hands-on and rewarding profession.

Exploring all aspects of practice from musculoskeletal physiotherapy and health management to neurological conditions and working with vulnerable client groups, you’ll have the opportunity to build a wide knowledge base.

As you progress through the course, you’ll study how to assess, advise and treat individuals with a variety of conditions including spinal and joint problems, respiratory difficulties, neurological problems, and those recovering from strokes and other chronic conditions. Working in our physiotherapy practical rooms and biomechanics laboratory, you’ll have the opportunity to practise the skills you’ve learned.

Podiatry

Podiatry ­BSc(Hons)

Course length: 3yrs full-time 4½yrs part-time

BSc(Hons) Your course Are you looking for a healthcare profession changing people’s lives? Do you want clear career progression and high levels of employment working with the National Health Service or running your own practice? If so studying for a Podiatry degree could be for you.

Podiatrists are allied healthcare professionals who assess and treat the lower limb and foot. They work in a number of specialist areas with people of all ages including musculoskeletal podiatry, sports injuries, biomechanics and gait assessment, orthotics, wound care, tissue viability and nail surgery. Podiatrists contribute to improving quality of life for patients with diabetes, rheumatological, vascular or neurological disorders.

Our course provides you with the opportunity to build the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills you need whilst learning in specialist clinical facilities. You’ll gain vital experience using our fully equipped on-site podiatry clinic, surgical theatre suite, biomechanics gait analysis equipment and orthotics laboratory.

Social Work MSci Your course This four-year integrated Master’s degree is a professional qualifying course, designed to equip you with the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to succeed in a future career in social work.

The course is part of an accredited Social Work Teaching Partnership, managed and delivered by long-standing partnerships between the University and local social work agencies including statutory, voluntary and service user-led organisations, and aims to produce practitioners who can critically reflect on their practice. The partnership delivers innovative and creative approaches to social work education, ensuring social workers are confident and creative practitioners with the skills required for working in statutory social work.

You’ll be introduced to anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice within a complex and multi-cultural society, and within the context of professional and agency standards and requirements. You’ll be taught by experienced staff with a variety of backgrounds in social care, and you’ll have the opportunity to hear the experiences and viewpoints from service users and carers.

Placements You’ll have the opportunity to put what you have learnt into practice through work-shadowing, and within your third and fourth years you’ll undertake work placements in a social work or related setting to support and enhance your learning.

Student Support A wide range of support services are available for students studying within the School of Human and Health Sciences, including dedicated staff and resources to help you with your studies and time at the University. These include:

Student Hub This is a one stop shop for students.

Their services include offering advice on extenuating circumstances, extension requests, attendance and welfare support, organising appointments with academic staff, signposting to other support networks and loan of MP3 recorders.

Academic Skills Development Team The Team provides guidance on how you can develop your academic skills in order to improve your grades. They provide support with general academic skills including essay writing, time management, presentations and group work skills; information technology and numeracy; research skills, as well as personal development for example confidence building and assertiveness.

Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Termination of course

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University.

If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date.

We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via UCAS at ucas.com

If you want to start your course in September 2020, you can apply to UCAS any time from 1 September 2019 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by 15 January 2020.

If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.
