2015-16 SINGLE-GAME RECAPS
HOUSTON - Freshman guard Serithia Hawkins recorded her first career double-double behind 13 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Cougars fell 55-45 to UTRGV to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule, at Hofheinz Pavilion, on Sunday
NEW ORLEANS- The Houston Cougar women’s basketball team opened American Athletic Conference play by dropping a 70-48 decision to Tulane on Wednesday, at Devlin Fieldhouse in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The two teams entered the locker room at the half with the score tied at 23, despite the Cougars holding the Vaqueros to just 33 percent from the field on 10-of-30 shooting. UTRGV used a 10-4 run at the end of the third quarter to take a 42-36 lead into the final period, and the Cougars could never get back within four points.
Houston trailed by just six to end the first quarter when Marche’ Amerson hit a three-pointer as time was winding down to make the game 17-11. After Tulane took a 38-16 lead into the half, the two teams played neck-and-neck for the remainder of the contest, with each team scoring 32 points in the second half.
COACH HUGHEY’S TAKE “In the second half, we went in and talked about the adjustments we needed to make, and how we needed to protect the basketball, and be more aggressive and not settle for a jump shot, and to attack the zone. We didn’t do that in the second half. We came out, stood around and watched the ball. We got out-hustled.”
COACH HUGHEY’S TAKE “We didn’t come out with a lot of focus and energy in the beginning, It’s all about energy and effort: especially when you’re playing a good team. You can’t have live ball turnovers to allow them to get into transition, and you have to rebound the basketball. Those two things we didn’t do well to start out. But, we’ll get back and fix things, and watch the Peach Bowl, and support the football team, and then we’ll go to practice.”
TURNING POINT With the scored tied at 23 apiece entering the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros outscored the Cougars 19-13 to take a six point lead into the final frame. Houston used a 3-pointer from senior Alecia Smith to cut the lead to four at 46-42 with 4:46 remaining in the contest, but UTRGV would use a 9-3 run over the final 3:32 to close out the game. TOP PERFORMERS Houston: Freshman guard Serithia Hawkins tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds to collect her first career double-double. Hawkins finished the game 6-of-14 from the field and added five steals, four assists and a block. Senior forward Tyler Gilbert added 12 points for the Cougars on 4-of-8 shooting for her fourth double-digit scoring game of the season. UTRGV: Shawnte’ Goff led UTRGV in scoring with 16 points while bringing down seven rebounds, while Hilda Bjorg Kjartansdottir added 14 points and seven boards of her own. Anushka Maldonado and Rickell Preston tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine apiece. KEY STATS - Freshman Serithia Hawkins recorded her first career double-double behind 13 points and a careerhigh 11 rebounds.
