ear Members,

As the holiday season heats up, I thought I would update everyone on all of upcoming special Club events. Beginning on Wednesday, December 7th, we are hosting the acapella group Just For Fun. Come, enjoy dinner, and catch the holiday spirit. This will be followed by the Member Holiday Social on December 14th, a great chance to mingle with your fellow members, and welcome the holidays. It’s not the holiday season without Santa!! Our annual Brunch with Santa is scheduled for December 17th, with both seating’s currently sold out. Please contact the Front Desk if you wish to be placed on the waitlist. Last but not least, one of our great Club traditions, the Early Bird Holiday Breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, December 22nd. The new Club website is up and running, and while the transition was a bit bumpy, the overall feedback has been very positive. The ability to have dining and squash reservations, among other improvements, has added a much needed level of convenience for our members. Our Communications Director, Laura Holmstedt, has done a wonderful job getting the site up and helping members to log in. As everyone knows, Club websites have become an extremely valuable tool in delivering convenience and value to the member’s experience. Kudos, as well, to Jason DiCesare and his exceptional culinary team in the kitchen. They have hit the ground running, producing exceptional food for our ala carte dining, as well as for our special events. The Fish and Game dinner certainly was a highlight for those who attended. Finally, in the accounting department, the Board approved our 2017 operating budget, which included the 2017 dues schedule. If you would like to review these minor dues adjustments, please stop by the office and we’ll be happy to assist. For those members interested in signing up for the Annual Food Minimum, you will need to drop off a check for $1500 before December 11th. Once paid, this annual option is non-refundable and non-transferable. Your November statement will also include a voluntary charge of $90 towards the annual Employee Holiday Fund. Please know that our wonderful staff truly appreciates this holiday “thank you” from the membership, and a special thank you to those that elect to give over and above the voluntary amount. It means a lot to the management team and staff to have a part in creating memorable experiences for you at the University Club. I wish you and your loved ones the happiest of holidays, including a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2017!!

The University Club of Boston 5

Meet the University Club of The Scholarship Committee is comprised of 13 members. It is a wonderful group committed to equal access to higher education and helping those who are less fortunate achieve their dreams of attending college. Featured this month are six of the committee members, with the remaining members to be profiled in January. Since 1977 the Scholarship Committee has awarded over 100 scholarships to graduating seniors from Boston public high schools matriculating to college. Our list of recipients is an impressive group of young men and women who have gone onto some of the most prestigious universities, including Boston College, Dartmouth, College of the Holy Cross, Harvard and Wellesley. While some recipients are still in college others are now in the work force as teachers, doctors, pharmacists or are pursuing graduate degrees. Our membership’s generosity is what makes the Future Leaders of Boston Scholarships possible and the Board of the Scholarship Fund is grateful for your support in helping to pave the way to college for these up and coming leaders. - Susan Passoni, President Scholarship Committee

Kate Bradley College of the Holy Cross, B.A., Sociology; Simmons College, M.S., Library & Information Science Growing up with a librarian for a mother and a lawyer for a father I was surrounded by books and always felt pretty confident in my reading and writing abilities. Math and science were a different story and I often felt inadequate in those areas. My sophomore year Chemistry teacher changed all that for me. He recognized that I was discouraged but also noticed that I had a natural curiosity about the subject. He encouraged me to channel that curiosity and to ask questions until I understood a concept rather than giving up. I’m grateful to be on the Scholarship Committee so that I can play a small role in ensuring that future students have the opportunity to develop their own intellectual curiosity.

Jay Bride Tufts University B.A. English Though I am new to the UClub Scholarship Committee this year, I have already seen it begin to change the lives of Boston-area youth. Fulfilling goals of a higher education can be a challenge even in an optimal home and economic environment. The Scholarship Fund brings opportunities to talented and motivated Boston high school students in some of the toughest sections of the city. I grew up in Portland, Maine, a community where attending (and graduating from) college was a given. I also had a family that supported me every step of the way through my undergraduate education at Tufts University. The stories of UClub Scholarship students, who persevere through all types of adversity, are truly humbling. I look forward to playing a positive role in the lives of future UClub Scholarship recipients.

David Crane – Middlebury College, B.A. Philosophy & Religion Having raised two boys who graduated from the Boston Public Schools, and having founded a grade 6-12 Boston public school, where we served mostly low-income, minority children from challenging circumstances, I was struck by the enormous disparity between the opportunities kids like mine took for granted and the daunting number of obstacles encountered by equally talented students from less privileged groups. The few thousand dollars and the mentoring offered by the scholarship committee enable at least a few of the most promising of those students to pursue and complete a post-secondary education that has the potential to change their lives. And, on a selfish note, it’s great fun to spend time with these students. It’s endlessly fascinating and enjoyable to work with them as they develop their own impressive talents and interests.

Boston’s Scholarship Committee Tim Huber University of Pennsylvania, B.S. Management (major) & German (minor); Harvard Business School, MBA

I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School) where I majored in Management and minored in German. Subsequently I earned an MBA at Harvard Business School. My most formative years, however, were the teen years. I attended three high schools in three countries – Cuba, the US and Belgium. Subsequently we lived in Venezuela and later I worked for in Germany. My Spanish, French, German and Latin teachers made huge impressions on me; moreover, learning foreign languages at an early age helped me more fully understand my own language. I continued in international business for most of my career including the present day. I greatly enjoy being on the Scholarship Fund Board because it offers an opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life. We don’t get a chance to do this very often in our everyday lives, but this is one of those rare opportunities to do so.

Abby Johnson Gettysburg College, B.A. Political Science; Northeastern University, Masters in Public Administration

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Gettysburg College and then went on to get a Masters in Public Administration from Northeastern University. My advisor in college had an immense impact on how I thought about education and other social issues. She believed that all students, regardless of circumstances, deserved a quality education and that all had the potential to shine. I joined the Scholarship Committee because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of the University Club. There are countless, talented Boston public school students who, without “gap funding,” would not be able to attend the college of their choice and realize their dreams of higher education. I am proud that the Scholarship Committee can support some of these students on their way to becoming the future leaders of Boston.

Rob Lawrence – Middlebury College, American Studies (major) & Spanish (minor); Harvard Business School, MBA

I currently am the SVP of Strategy & M&A at LogMeIn, a publicly traded software firm in Boston’s Seaport District. Both of my parents were the first in their families to attend college; my sister and I were the beneficiaries of the commitment they made to education, and the sacrifices they made to provide for us is something I will never take for granted. I have been involved in education reform at varying levels over the past decade, and it is my strong belief that college persistence is one of the most important drivers of success for individuals in their lives. Being on the Scholarship Fund Board is an opportunity for me to put that belief into action with a group of students each year that otherwise may not be able to persist because of financial constraint. I feel it is a serious responsibility to be the stewards of the University Club’s generosity through this program and am thrilled to dedicate my time to it.

2017 MFS Pro-Am Doubles Changes Highlight the Upcoming Annual Event One of the major events of the squash season – the annual pro and pro-am doubles championships – will be played at the Club on January 4-8, 2017. Several changes from previous years will be featured in the upcoming iteration. For the first time ever, a women’s pro division will be included. Six of the top women’s pro teams will vie for significant prize money, and they will join the top 16 men’s pro teams who will play in their own division. In addition, the pros will be paired with amateurs in a separate tournament. The pro-am tournament provides many club members the thrill of playing along with a pro partner, and the resulting matches are often very close and very entertaining. MFS Investment Management is our new Title Sponsor, and we are delighted to have this wonderful company on board for a multi-year period. In addition, Sapient Global Markets and Windham Capital have signed on as Associate Sponsors for the 2017 event. This will be the 26th consecutive year the club will have hosted the very best pro doubles players in the world. Matches begin on Wednesday, January 4 and continue throughout the week. A new Saturday evening session will be held, featuring the two men’s professional semi-final matches. And expanded viewing will be organized for the semi-final and final matches. Several social events (Thursday drinks courtside, Friday buffet dinner, and Sunday brunch) occur during tournament week, and all supporters receive tournament favors. Player and patron packages are still available. For more information, please contact Len Bernheimer,, 508-545-1670.
