The Student Experience Framework has been designed with significant input from students and staff, it outlines our commitment to

The Student Experience Framework provides you with a map of the rich and extensive range of opportunities with which you can engage. We want you to immerse yourself in the whole university experience: learning, studying, undertaking personal development, and making the most of the social and cultural aspects of your time with us. As well as regular activity related to your

course of study, there are a number of extra-curricular activities in which you can participate, many of which will also enhance your employment opportunities. These include international study trips, Union of Students societies, sports, peer support schemes, and more.

Your time at the University may be viewed as a partnership. We will provide these opportunities, but in order to maximise the benefits of this Student Experience Framework you will need to engage actively with your course, the University and the wider communities in which you live. It is important that you set and aim to achieve your own personal goals, those that are meaningful to you.

OUR commitment to you We will provide you with high-quality teaching and learning opportunities. These will be underpinned by research, and will involve assessments designed to help you develop your academic and professional skills. We will work with you as partners: writing, researching and publishing together. We will listen to your voice, and work together to develop ideas within courses. We will seek to involve you in enhancing the quality of what we do and in being innovative in our approach to your university experience. We recognise that your wellbeing, learning and success are closely linked. In order to help you make the most of your time at university, therefore, we will provide a wide range of learning opportunities, support services and related activities, creating and sustaining an environment in which you may reach your full potential. We will provide welcoming, safe and affordable accommodation in our University Halls of Residence, in which you can relax and settle into university life. We will encourage you to enhance your understanding of the world. This will include an opportunity to apply for part-funded travel awards and easier access to international study trips. We will promote volunteering project activities and varied opportunities for real world learning or work experience, enabling you to take on roles of responsibility that will help and enable you to maximise your own personal and professional potential.

Every student’s experience is unique, and we want your journey with us to be special, well-rounded and stimulating in a whole variety of ways. We all have a responsibility in helping to achieve this.

We want everybody in our University community to take a responsibility to support you. We take that responsibility seriously so we can have a positive impact on your experience. We welcome students from all backgrounds, and we are fully committed to ensuring that you feel you truly belong to our University community. We will work in close partnership with the Union of Students to develop new opportunities for you.

Your academic development is the key to your success. We will ensure you have the opportunity to participate in educational experiences which both challenge, stimulate and extend your academic abilities.

Through your time at the University you will engage in learning that enables you to build a whole host of skills and to apply your knowledge to a variety of real-world situations.

Your time at university is an investment in yourself and your future. So get involved, both within and beyond the University.

BE distinct We recognise that you bring your own distinctive, unique experiences and ideas to university

These undoubtedly help to make our University a better place to learn and to study. We will ensure you receive the support that reflects your aspirations throughout your journey with us. To achieve this we will:

Encourage you to share your personal strengths to bring your unique viewpoint to bear, helping us to enrich the learning experience for all those around you. We often find that such contributions and ideas within your course can inspire others to achieve greater things. Ensure that you have a range of opportunities to create an experience which is unique to you, enabling you to fulfil your potential and realise your aspirations. Help you to develop the ability to evaluate options and make well-informed decisions about all aspects of your university journey: both before you arrive, while you are studying here, and when considering what you might want to do after you graduate. Ensure that from your first week at university, you have an academic member of staff allocated as your Personal Tutor so you can discuss your academic ambitions and share your achievements. They will engage proactively with you throughout your time at university, helping you to realise success and to articulate all of the ways in which you are making progress. Develop a Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) scheme to provide high-quality peer tutoring on your course.

THINK differently Your academic development is the key to your success We will ensure you have the opportunity to participate in educational experiences which challenge, stimulate and extend your academic abilities.

To achieve this we will:

Encourage you to explore ideas that you find fascinating and increase your interest through engagement in your course. You will be expected to read widely, to ask questions, to debate difficult concepts, and to be an active contributor to University events. Help you to advance your knowledge and kindle your passion for the things that are meaningful to you, thereby coming to appreciate fully the ways in which you can use your creativity and make a difference in the world. Help you to translate ideas learned in the classroom into reality. By connecting learning, research and practice, your understanding of complex ideas, and your ability to find solutions, will be significantly enhanced. Embed digital capabilities within all courses and help you to gain valuable skills through our dedicated digital champions. Co-ordinate, expand and strengthen the opportunities to design and undertake research. If your research is of a high quality, you will be encouraged to submit it for publication in the University’s peer-reviewed Student Research Journal. Provide opportunities for you to have your achievements and academic excellence recognised, including through: yy The Dean’s Award in each College yy The Vice-Chancellor’s Prize at graduation

CREATE opportunities

Engage in learning that enables you to build a whole host of skills and to apply your knowledge to a variety of real-world situations

We are committed to supporting you in developing your career aspirations and enhancing opportunities in employment, enterprise or further study. To achieve this we will:

Challenge you to apply your learning to the real world, as well as your employment and volunteering opportunities. Encourage you to develop your personal and professional sense of self so you can explore your role in the world and be ambitious about the impact you can have in the future. Keep you informed on industry and sector developments through our close links with employers; support you in finding work placements; and ensure you learn how to build good contacts to help enhance your employability, whether that’s in getting a job, setting up a business, or undertaking other graduate-level work. Help you make the most of your skills, knowledge and understanding. So, if your ambition is to create or own your own business, either while you are studying or after you have graduated, you can apply for support with one of our incubation units, with reasonable rent and a range of business support services to help you on your way to establishing your business. Ensure you have access to help, support and guidance from our experts in the Careers and Employment Service for up to three years after completing your course. We will maintain contact with you as our alumni network, to provide support including access to business start-up experts.

GET involved Your time at university is an investment in yourself and your future

We want you to get involved, both within and beyond the University: develop new skills; meet new people; take on new challenges; and give something back to the community. To achieve this we will:

Ensure that you are provided with many opportunities to express your opinions, perspectives and ideas, and we will encourage you to get involved in the different extra-curricular activities provided by your course and by the University. Give you the chance to help us shape and influence our policies, processes and practices through our ‘Get Involved’ initiative, which is designed to allow your voice to influence decision-making at the University. Provide opportunities, through our innovative ‘Make a Change’ fund. Under this scheme you can bid for money to create projects that are intended to have a positive impact in the community. Invite you to be involved in our recruitment panels for all new senior management posts and academic staff and encourage you to participate in the University quality assurance process. Encourage you to use your talents for the benefit of the wider community by participating in volunteering activity and provide opportunities for you to gain official recognition for your volunteering, work experience or Union of Students involvement through our ‘Futures Award’. Ensure that you have access to inclusive and extensive sports facilities, leisure activities, student societies and sports clubs. We will also help you to find opportunities in the community to be involved in activities that aren’t available on campus.

Studying at the University allows you to broaden your world view and expand your global thinking

We believe in the value of experiencing and understanding different cultures, and having the opportunity to consider and debate different perspectives. We offer a range of opportunities for global educational experiences. To achieve this we will:

Embed global knowledge across all courses so you have a deeper insight into how the world is changing and encourage you to adopt practical and creative approaches to sustainability in order that you may make better informed, greener, healthier and more ethical choices. Help you develop skills to work in a global economy by providing you with opportunities to apply for international study. This might be as part of your course, or in addition to it. Tell you about our University Exchange Programme which can help to improve your employability, enable you to learn from each other, and bring home new ideas. Encourage you to apply for one of a number of our International Travel Awards to support opportunities to work and study abroad. Prepare you to be innovative and enterprising so you feel able and confident to compete in the global economy. Provide public lectures and talks presented by visiting academics and partners from global industries and institutions to showcase and stimulate innovative thinking and the sharing of different perspectives. Inspire you to want to continue learning with us and gain a deeper insight into your academic interests by extending your opportunity for further study.

TAKE the lead Leadership skills will be invaluable to you, whatever your professional life might hold

At university you can be a leader of your own learning, taking responsibility and seizing the opportunities on offer. We will encourage you to be determined, focused and imaginative, attributes that will stand you in excellent stead for the rest of your life. To achieve this we will:

Ensure that all courses of study include a range of leadership activities such as creating a vision, teamwork, presentations, communication, problem-solving, debating and questioning. These will increase your leadership skills and give you greater confidence to pursue your ambitions. Encourage you to apply for one of our Student Leadership Awards to enable you to undertake high-quality leadership training. Enable you to benefit from and contribute to our Alumni Mentor Scheme, giving you inspirational role models and practical leadership support. Provide you with opportunities and training so that you can undertake leadership roles in the University of Derby Union of Students, and we will work with course leaders to make sure your voice is represented. Invite you to participate in professional dialogue with the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Experience) and the wider University Executive group through our regular Q&A meetings.
