This academic study and research center, located in the Faculty of Humanities, is responsible for teaching Lithuanian disciplines Photo: Santa Rukmane (language, culture, literature, folklore, history, translation etc.) at the University of Latvia and coordinating Lithuanistic studies at other higher education institutions of Latvia. The students are encouraged to work on research in the field of Latvian and Lithuanian comparative vocabulary, phraseology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, literature, ethnology and other research directions. The Centre has a close cooperation with the universities of Lithuania in terms of exchange students and teachers as well as participation in joint scientific expeditions and projects.

Alongside the world’s growing interest in China, the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia facilitates the intercultural dialogue through teaching the Chinese language and promoting Chinese culture.

The Confucius Institute has organized the international Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and the competition Chinese Language Bridge already twice in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, twelve students from Confucius Institute of the University of Latvia have received the Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) scholarships for the Chinese language studies in China. As of the academic year 2012/2013, the Confucius Institute of the University of Latvia offers two level Chinese language courses (Beginners’ level and Intermediate level), in the academic year 2013/2014 also the Advanced level Chinese course has been launched. Besides the language studies, the Confucius Institute organizes the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, Sinology lectures held by professors from China and different Chinese culture activities like Calligraphy and Chinese traditional painting.
