Mission As an educational institution, Universidade Metodista de São Paulo has as its main objective the dissemination of knowledge and a student body properly qualified for the job market. However, this is just one aspect of its mission. As part of its essence, its religious character stresses the importance of seeing the student first as a human being, considering the overall education. Thus, the transmission of values like ethics and respect, the inclusion of themes like sustainability in discussions, as well as the creation of situations that promote reflection, is essential to the development of a critical spirit and a broadened vision of the world. For the University, more than high-quality professionals, it is necessary to educate citizens. Having individuals with technical capabilities is as important as their capacity to be agents of change who make a difference in society. See institutional video here

This is our commitment.

To participate effectively in the development of people, having the power to influence and contribute to the improvement of quality of life, based on knowledge and ethical values. Vision To be an educational reference in the building of a learning community, nationally and internationally recognized for services of quality and social significance, with flexible, creative and innovative practices. Fundamental Values • Development of a critical awareness of reality; • Development of a sense of justice and solidarity, and of its practice, including relations in the workplace; • Reflective practice oriented towards Christian spirituality; • Development of an awareness that social and individual interests are equally important for the balance of social relations; • Innovation and creativity subject to ethics, in the construction and socialization of knowledge.

A HISTORY OF COMMITMENT The history of the Instituto Metodista de Ensino Superior (Methodist Institute of Higher Education - IMS) – located in São Bernardo do Campo, an important city in São Paulo’s Greater ABC industrial belt, in the São Paulo metropolitan area – began when the Theological College of the Methodist Church was created in 1938. Recognition of the vocation and educational quality of Methodist teaching, together with the evolution, growth and structural and socioeconomic strengthening of the region, led to the creation of the IMS in 1970, offering degree programs in Language and Literature, Education and Psychology. As a religious school, based on Christian, ethical and moral values, and focused on the community, it soon became one of the country’s most highly regarded institutions of higher education. In 1997, with the strengthening of the research and extension areas, consolidation of the pedagogical project and the excellence of the quality education achieved over the years, the

Methodist college was promoted to university status. Since then, the number of colleges and programs offered has increased, and it has gained more significance on a regional and national level. Today, it is the main reference for higher education in one of Brazil’s most important regions. The University has three campuses in São Bernardo do Campo, where it offers undergraduate and graduate studies (at the specialization, master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral levels) through contact learning, in addition to contact learning support services throughout the country with Distance Education programs. The IMS still continues to have four basic education units (located in the cities of São Bernardo do Campo, Bertioga and Itapeva – in the state of São Paulo – and Passo Fundo, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul).

06 Universidade Metodista de São Paulo

In addition to professional training excellence, Universidade Metodista de São Paulo trains agents of change; to make this possible, the institution understands the need to break down the barriers established by the classroom. Investing in Extension, one of the points that sustains the university tripod, allows students to come into contact with other realities, developing projects with the community and playing a leading role in building knowledge together.

Mônica Rodrigues

CITIZENSHIP: AGENTS OF CHANGE Among the extension activities are the Canudos project – a partnership with the Brazilian Solidarity Institute, to meet the needs of the Canudos Velho community, in the state of Bahia – and the LIBRAS at the University, which trains teaching certification program students in Brazilian Sign Language.

These activities contribute to professional and personal growth, since they provide contact with students from other areas and, in some cases, integrated work between undergraduate and graduate programs.

Learn more about the details of the Sustainable Methodist Program

Paula Lima

The Programa Metodista Sustentável (Sustainable Methodist Program) works in a comprehensive way, serving as guide for the Methodist activities, since one of the three basic axes for institutional policies is sustainability. Its guiding principle is based on the Carta da Terra (Letter of the Earth), which seeks to promote the transition to more sustainable ways of life and to a global society based on a model of shared ethics, which includes respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, democracy and a culture of peace. Thus, the University invests in the consolidation of a culture centered on sustainability, including development of research and extension in the area. A great step forward in this direction was the creation of the Sustainability Center, made up of professors, researchers and employees of all the Methodist colleges and administrative sectors. In partnership with the institution’s Joint Business Incubator, the Sustainability Center faces the challenge of becoming a space for freedom and co-creation.

MORE: ENTERING THE JOB MARKET Many aspects are involved in building a solid professional career. In addition to the technical basis learned during university life, there are practical experiences that contribute to the growth of a young person in the practice of his/ her selected profession. One of the ways to start this process is through internships that promote vocational training and promote the development of skills and capabilities consistent with the theory that the student learns in the classroom.

In order to contribute to students in this context, Universidade Metodista de S達o Paulo has an Internship Center that establishes agreements with organizations for arranging and publicizing internship vacancies, as well as trainee programs, among which the website stands out. The Internship Center assists students in curriculum preparation, for interviews and for group dynamics, as well as in formalization of the internship.

WHAT TO KNOW Among the main tourist attractions of the region are:

- Paranapiacaba: Located in the district of Santo André, at the top of the Serra do Mar mountain range, this historic village was established as a camp for workers of the newly created Sao Paulo Railway Co. With the inauguration of the railway line, which became the principal means for transportation of coffee production from the farm areas to the Port of Santos, the village became important as the last stop before descending the mountain range. The place enchants with the European style architecture of the houses, with the train station clock and its frequent fog. The Winter Festival of Paranapiacaba takes place in July, with shows, exhibitions and a gourmet space. The Feast of Cambuci, a typical fruit of the Atlantic Forest found mainly in the Serra do Mar mountain range, is also held every year.

- The Restaurants Tour: Pleasing different tastes, São Bernardo is also known for its gastronomic variety. The visitor can appreciate different menus visiting such restaurants as Frango com Polenta, Peixe, dos Petiscos and Aperitivos, Prato Executivo and Comida Típica.

- São Paulo Municipal Market: The walk through São Paulo’s historic downtown center must include a visit to the city’s Municipal Market, famous for its cod fish pastry and bologna sandwich, as well as for its variety of products, such as fruit and spices. Built in the 1920s, its architecture with columns in Greek style, glass roofs, skylights and stained-glass windows also attract the attention of those who already know the place.

1. Paranapiacaba 2. Coffee Museum 3. São Paulo Municipal Market 4. São Paulo Museum of Art 5. Museum of the Portuguese Language

- Coffee Museum: Located in the city of Santos, the museum is in the building that housed the Official Coffee Exchange that in the 1920s centralized, organized and controlled coffee market operations, which were the country’s main source of wealth at the time. The museum’s main goal is to preserve and disseminate the history of coffee in Brazil and in the world, and it has an Information and Documentation Center, in addition to holding exhibits and offering courses, like that for baristas.

- Museum of the Portuguese Language: A space dedicated to the appreciation and dissemination of the language, it uses leading edge technology and interactive resources for presenting content to visitors. The choice of its location at the Luz train station was for two reasons: Because it is an historic 19th century landmark and because it is in São Paulo, the city with the world’s largest Portuguese-speaking population.

Other places or events to be included on the itinerary: - Paulista Avenue and the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) - Liberdade Neighborhood - São Paulo Cultural Center - Tomie Ohtake Cultural Institute - Botanic Garden - Soccer Museum - Ibirapuera Park - São Paulo Pinacoteca Museum - São Paulo Municipal Theater - 24-Hour Cultural Marathon

Due to the wide range of possibilities offered in different areas of activity – from microenterprises to multinational companies and organizations both in the public and private sector– professionals in the area of Management and Business need to differentiate themselves in order to stand out in the job market. In addition to specific knowledge, knowing how to deal with people and being well-informed about what is happening in Brazil and in the world, a systemic and integrated approach is essential to establish a successful career. Taking all these factors into account, Universidade Metodista de São Paulo offers curricular and extracurricular activities that contribute to the intellectual development and investigative skills of its students. One way to make these aspects work is through the experiences offered by the Agency of the College of Management and Services (FAGES Agency), the Agency Management Center (CAGE) and the Economic Observatory. All these structures allow students to make contact with clients and real situations in the professional environment, putting concepts taught during the courses into practice. Also worth mentioning are events like the Technologists Meeting, which promotes lectures, panels and workshops with broadcasts for distance learning classes; the Business Fair / Entrepreneur Week, held with the participation of companies and institutions like SEBRAE and the Endeavor Entrepreneur Institute, including technical visits to ports, airports and companies.

Extension projects are also valued. Through them, young people engage in activities that involve applying acquired knowledge for the benefit of the community. Research is encouraged by initiatives such as the Professional Training Cycle of Activities and the FAGES Social Management Meeting, in which the results of scientific studies are presented to project leaders, entrepreneurs and the community. On the other hand, the Graduate Business Administration Program takes a position as a creator and disseminator of knowledge, a facilitator of the process of analysis, understanding and encouragement of new approaches to managing organizations in their interactions with players in the context in which they operate. The program also contributes to teacher’s actions in higher education and to research activity, with skills and a strategic vision for the investigation and production of knowledge on important themes of Business Administration and related areas. Since 2003, the City Management Chair has promoted and supported studies, research, debates and projects for the implementation of integrated public policies with an eye on improving the quality of life in the São Paulo Greater ABC region.

INTEGRATED As important as the technique and mastery of tools and technologies, is a solid theoretical basis in different areas of knowledge. It is from this broader perspective that Universidade Metodista de São Paulo directs the education of the student body of the College of Communications. The pedagogical projects are designed in this duality between theory and practice, providing support for the execution of projects, regardless of the platform used – radio, TV, the internet or print media. Always under the guidance of professors, students engage in activities in specific spaces, such as the Multimedia Newsroom, where they can participate as paid interns or as an extension of the classroom, experiencing a newsroom similar to those existing in the various communications vehicles; the Integrated Communications Agency (AGiCOM), a project similar to the agencies servicing real clients; and the Projects Room, in which they meet to develop communications campaigns for real clients as well. The work performed by them is showcased in the Expometô - an event held annually in the Vera Cruz Pavilion, in São Bernardo, divided into Metôfashion, Colors and Tastes, Cosmétika, the Design Showcase and the Showcase of Corporate/Institutional Projects. Students from all Communications programs participate in them.

Mônica Rodrigues

Daniel Arantes

The University also has partnerships for production of videos for Canal Futura and reports for Radio CBN, and the UOL portal, as well as an agreement with the main newspaper in the region, Diário do Grande ABC, for internships. A characteristic of each phase of the courses, essential for those working in the communications area, is the ability to change positions; to put yourself in the position of broadcaster, preparing a message, and at other times, in that of receiver. In this way, young people are encouraged to experience the variables present in the relationship with the other, such as respect, personal values and ethics. On the other hand, another level of the education is the graduate program in Social Communication, with more than 35 years of existence. Its purpose is to train teachers, researchers and high-level professionals, qualified to work in the communications area in public or private companies, institutions of higher education and non-governmental organizations. It is also worth noting that since 1996, Metodista has hosted the UNESCO Chair in Communication for Regional Development. Through this space, teaching, research and extension activities are regularly developed, with students of the program being able to take part in them.

HUMANIST Due to its religious character, Universidade Metodista de São Paulo considers the humanist education of its student body as important as technical training. This aspect becomes even more relevant when one considers the students who work in the health area. In addition to being likely to work with what is most advanced in technological terms, the focus should be on the individual, on the attention and care he/she needs, whether this is the patient himself/herself or just a person accompanying his/her pet, in the case of consultations and procedures provided by Veterinary Medicine. Thus, the university has specific spaces for its students to apply theoretical concepts and engage in professional practice. Since the beginning of the courses, young people have the Pharmacology School, Veterinary Hospital, Polyclinic and School Academy infrastructure to develop work based on the tripod of prevention, promotion and treatment. During the course, students have an opportunity to participate in extension projects and have contact with the country’s health situation, in activities organized in less favored areas or as free work in group efforts. En-

couragement of scientific production should also be emphasized, since knowledge gained from research is essential for obtaining new drugs and treatments. Another point that should be highlighted is the Sustainability Center, a multidisciplinary unit that seeks to interweave this theme into students’ education and Metodista operations. It brings together professors and students interested in discussion and engaging in research, extension and teaching projects in the area. It is important to consider the contribution of the graduate program in Health Psychology, which stands out in two ways: by promoting the exchange of experience between professionals from different specialties and by interchanges in conducting research projects and scientific publications with the universities of Algarve and Aveiro, in Portugal; of Bologna, in Italy, as well as the University of São Paulo (USP), the Federal University of Uberlândia and USP’s School of Medicine (Hospital das Clínicas).

A solid, quality education is one of the basic requirements for professionals today. Understanding of reality should be added to this, in the sense of understanding how the world works, why it works in a particular way and how it could be different. This is one of the focuses of the work of Universidade Metodista de S達o Paulo with students that pursue a career in the Humanities. The development of this critical thinking together with technical skills encompass three values to be conveyed to the student body: the concept of citizenship, development of an ecological awareness and social justice. Another axis that pervades the courses is appreciation of life, conservation of the environment and everything related to respect for human dignity and the ethical being. One of the ways to communicate these issues to students is through events, such as the Meeting of Popular Movements, the Week of Studies in Human Rights and the Philosophical Meetings, which encourage discussion and reflection based on the topics addressed.

However, for this critical vision to be possible, it is necessary to construct the first foundations back in basic education. For this, Metodista highlights the importance of teaching. Thus, among its initiatives are the institutional programs of the Institutional Scholarship Program for Teacher Initiation (PIBID), which awards scholarships to students and gives them the opportunity to work in public schools; the Methodist Teaching Certification Support, which includes Biology, Philosophy, Mathematics and Education courses; and the International Methodist Teaching Certification Program in which the student spends one or two years of the course in Spain or Portugal, obtaining a double degree at the end. At another educational level are the graduate programs. One of them, focused on Religious Sciences, develops teaching and research activities involving teachers and students in the critical study of religious phenomena. The second, in Education, is founded on an approach through which we deal with the challenges of researcher teachers as managing educators capable of communicating the knowledge acquired. In this program, research produced and the problems of educating teachers are discussed, considering issues relevant to the Brazilian reality.

CONNECTED The continuing advances and innovations in the technology area make this a promising field, mainly with regard to the number of openings offered. However, qualified people are needed, capable of meeting the demands of organizations. Aware of this reality, Universidade Metodista de S達o Paulo includes real market simulations in its academic routines, in which students must comply with established targets and deadlines. Another way to contribute to the education of its students is to promote events like Technology Week, with lectures and courses given by professionals in the area. There is also the FACET Agency (College of Exact Sciences and Technology Agency), which supports internal and external projects, developing computer systems for the university. At the Agency, students can participate in internship programs and research and scientific initiation projects. Cooperation with companies, especially those located in the Greater ABC region, is one of Metodista investments to understand the professional profile desired. Thus, neces-

sary adaptations can be made to course curriculum. A positive point is that this relationship allows students to have contact with the reality of research and development work in the institutions. Initiatives like these are headed by the Agency for Promoting Technology Application Agreements (FOCAT). Through it, companies make presentations and have the opportunity to train students in the use of their technologies. Working side by side with the market allows the university to create new courses, such as occurred with the Industrial Automation course, the result of a partnership with Festo. Cisco Systems, Microsoft, IBM, Siemens, Iplan and ABB are among the companies working with Metodista.
