LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS IT HAS BEEN AN HONOR TO SERVE AS BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIR THE PAST TWO YEARS. The role provided an insider’s view of the dramatic impact United Way of the Ozarks has had on our community over the past 90 years! While need grew to unprecedented levels during the pandemic, our local nonprofits’ ability to fundraise in the traditional sense was limited. Seeing this, UWO quickly shifted to an all-digital campaign and set up a Coronavirus Response Fund to help those impacted by the pandemic. I’m extremely proud of our team and their work to meet the needs of those in our community. And, I am excited for the future of United Way of the Ozarks. I know that we are in good hands and want to thank you for allowing me to serve you and our community!

I AM EXCITED TO BE THE UNITED WAY BOARD CHAIR DURING THIS INSPIRING TIME OF CHANGE. While Covid-19 has been the focus of our community for the past 18 months, United Way of the Ozarks has been reinventing itself. To think beyond the pandemic is tough, but we must remember that our community continues to have many challenges. One important change that is happening at United Way is the reinvention of our Community Investment process. We are focusing on preventing poverty, instead of just helping to minimize its impact. We are embracing innovation and working to help our community partners try new, creative approaches to move the needle on our red flag issues. While doing all this, we are still maintaining a focus on helping our most vulnerable by providing safety net resources when they are in crisis. I am so proud of our team and our community. And, I am excited for the future of our community and the United Way.

While we were all managing ourselves through the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of the Ozarks was simultaneously reinventing ourselves. RESPONDING TO UNPRECEDENTED TIMES APRIL 1, 2020–MARCH 31, 2021 What impacts one, impacts all. That was the sentiment behind “Connect the Dots,” the theme of the 2020 campaign which emphasized the connections between individuals, businesses, government, nonprofits and the United Way. The campaign launched at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, implemented digital tactics and finished one percent shy of the 2019 total.

Great Southern Bank’s campaign, themed Lighting the Way – United We Shine, featured how its associates’ collective contributions make a big impact in our community. Great Southern Bank was again named a Top Workplace Campaign in 2020.

PILLARS OF OUR COMMUNITY Workplace campaigns are the cornerstone of United Way of the Ozarks. Campaigns serve as a launchpad for corporate citizenship and allow employees to donate, volunteer and rally around a cause that matters to them. Three Pillar Awards are presented annually following the campaign to recognize the outstanding commitment of individuals and organizations.

LEADING WITH IMPACT As the pandemic unfolded in 2020, United Way of the Ozarks answered the call to help our community, with a focus on serving the most vulnerable. Among the efforts were: • Helping to coordinate and convene faith, civic and government leadership to ensure efficient and effective pandemic responses, and community-wide communications. • Providing more than $185,700 to our nonprofits so they could address immediate and long-term community recovery efforts. Top needs included housing assistance, virtual communication equipment, and cleaning and sanitation supplies. • Distributing more than 109,000 masks and face coverings.

RESPOND. REIMAGINE. REBUILD. New systemic, interconnected approach. We are reimagining the way United Way of the Ozarks impacts our community. Last year was like no other. It created monumental challenges. But it also offered insight into building a better, stronger more resilient community. Our new Community Investment strategy views the needs of our community now and outlines the long-term change United Way can make in the future.

LAUNCHING OUR CI STRATEGY Our new Community Investment (CI) strategy will maximize undesignated funds collected during the annual fundraising campaign to support programs that focus on:

We believe the best way to attain progress is by bringing people and resources together to drive long-lasting, systemic change. Our CI process is driven by donor-volunteers. They evaluate needs. They strategically direct program investments. They improve lives. They change our community. To foster this transformation, our CI Committee will comprise three panels. Each will focus resources to either upstream, safety net or innovative programs. This new strategic approach will help dollars go even further to accommodate both the needs of today and the goal for a brighter future. Local nonprofits beyond the current partners will be able to apply for funding from each category.

We are sharpening our focus on the upstream, root causes of social issues in our community. These systemic efforts will reduce or eliminate barriers to education, workforce training and jobs. They will help address the skills gap in our labor force. Our upstream focus will fund solutions that help individuals and families become self-sufficient. The innovation fund is an open invitation for nonprofits that are ready to pair their desire to create change with an entrepreneurial and competitive spirit. CULTIVATING THE STRENGTH OF UNITED WAY United Way of the Ozarks is uniquely positioned to help our community by bringing people and resources together. We are able to amplify change on a scale that no single organization can achieve on its own. But there is another important role that is emerging: Fostering community ownership. We believe that building community ownership starts by helping people learn about their community and then providing avenues to engage. Following are the distinct programs and collaborations we offer.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

2020 SPONSORS

Day of Caring is the largest single-day volunteer event in Southwest Missouri. Local businesses and organizations coordinate teams of employees to spend the day giving back to their community by completing service projects at area nonprofit organizations. Thousands of man-hours are logged in a single day, resulting in “weeks’ worth” of work to benefit nonprofits and the clients they serve. Day of Caring took on a new look in 2020. In-person events moved to virtual offerings and postponements. Sponsors reallocated their contributions to the COVID Response Fund, which addressed our nonprofit partners’ most critical needs.

Give 5 is a “civic matchmaking” program that connects Springfield-Greene County retirees (and soon-to-be retirees) age “60 or better” with meaningful volunteer opportunities. Participants learn about the most challenging problems facing our community and uncover ways they can help make a difference in addressing those social and systemic issues. On average, graduates of the program give more than 18 volunteer hours per month.

COMING SOON The United Academy for Inclusion and Belonging is a constructive investment of resources that leads to culture-changing outcomes. Academy participants learn the principles of social justice and gain the tools needed to foster an inclusive environment. More than 235 first responders, frontline nonprofit professionals, volunteers and board members completed the first set of classes to become champions of inclusive excellence. United Academy is expanding beyond equipping police, firefighters and nonprofits with diversity and inclusion best practices. It is opening up to the broader community, with classes for Springfield Rotarians, police officers and firefighters beginning in fall 2021.

New to the Springfield area, Women United is planned to launch in 2022 and will engage current and emerging leaders in our community’s critical needs. Women United will create an expanded network of professional and civic-minded women. Their collective focus on “moving the needle” through philanthropy and civic engagement will create lasting change.

To launch in 2022, the new Loaned Executive Academy Program (LEAP) is an enrichment program for up-and-coming and seasoned executives. Taught by a faculty of community leaders at the top of their respective fields, loaned executives become more knowledgeable members of their teams and a key constituent in our community. Each will broaden their professional networks by learning more about their community through connections established by assisting with the annual campaign.

COMING SOON

Missouri Apprentice Ready Program and the United Way of the Ozarks are helping local women and underrepresented populations prepare for a successful career in the construction trades. By offering pre-apprenticeship exposure to different vocations and the training to be successful, this initiative also ensures participants have: • Clothing, books, supplies or tools required. • Transportation to work or training. • Childcare.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE The Emergency Food and Shelter Program supplements and expands the work of local social services agencies – both nonprofit and governmental – to help people with economic emergencies. The United Way of the Ozarks administers this federally funded program that is open to all organizations helping address food insecurity and homelessness.

The Coronavirus Response Fund delivered vital funding to our partner nonprofits because of the financial crisis caused by the pandemic. All donations to this fund remained local and supported our partners’ immediate needs like shelter, food, physical and mental health care, and operational expenses.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE 211 is the federal 3-digit phone number that connects people to caring, local experts who make finding help easier. 211 maintains a database of local and statewide services and resources. Most people connecting with 211 are seeking assistance to meet basic needs like housing, food, transportation and health care.

The Cancer Fund is a designated collection geared toward cancer patients in need of financial assistance. A cancer diagnosis changes a person’s life. It may also affect his or her financial situation. The Cancer Fund helps defray expenses, including housing, utilities and transportation to medical appointments.

The Veteran’s Fund is a designated collection that provides emergency assistance to veterans. It is administered through a partnership with the American Red Cross of Southern Missouri. The most common request is for housing and/or utility assistance.

The AFL-CIO Labor Engagement Partnership connects union employees and their families to services and resources to help build a better, self-sustaining life. It focuses efforts to improve quality of life through health, education and financial stability initiatives.

COLLABORATIONS The Have Faith Initiative of Southwest Missouri is a group of faith-based leaders and nonprofits. They convene bi-weekly to hear from local public service leaders about timely issues and to coordinate faith-based responses to social challenges. The group serves as a sounding board and action-based collective.

Springfield News-Leader Find Your Cause helps citizens better understand their community and find specific ways to plug in and solve problems. Created in partnership with the Springfield News-Leader, the monthly print and digital features tell stories of people who need help and those who are providing the help. UWO collaborates with community leaders, nonprofits and volunteers to lend their voice, resources and engagement opportunities that address our community’s “red flags.”

We will be partnering with Springfield Rotary Clubs and the Rotaract Club to leverage the power of our Rotarians’ reach and influence. By becoming more aware of our community, engaging in meaningful service activities and working to make Springfield a stronger, more inclusive community, Rotarians are contributing to solutions that benefit us all.

Corporate citizenship will be featured in a series of articles by the Springfield Business Journal, as well as a podcast, launched in fall 2021. United Way of the Ozarks will highlight the benefits of corporate and employee engagement in our community, and explore how strong corporate citizenship enhances an organization’s ability to attract and recruit talent.

United Way of the Ozarks earned the Guidestar 2021 Platinum Seal of Transparency. The distinction recognizes strong performance across a range of governance, financial and operational dimensions to ensure the funds we raise are maximized in our fight for the health, education and financial stability of our community.

We also met all 20 Standards for Charity Accountability by the Better Business Bureau. The compliance standards are designed to assist donors in making informed giving decisions.
