“But those who look to the Lord, will renew their strength. They will rise up on wings like eagles…” Isaiah 40:31

If you want to “Go Higher” you must face the storm. The eagle flies higher in the storm, using the wind to lift it up. Wilbur and Orville Wright went higher, ignoring the words of critics, facing into the wind and using the gusts to fly. In the midst of suffering during the Babylonian exile, God said through the prophet Isaiah, “Comfort, comfort my people” (Isaiah 40:1). Those words, made famous in song through Handel’s Messiah, lead up to the final verse of that fortieth chapter: “But those who look to the Lord, will renew their strength. They will rise up on wings like eagles…”

In the midst of this crazy storm we are in, United students and alumni/ae are going higher, thanks to you! The generosity of the men and women listed in this report have allowed United students to continue to rise up on wings like eagles as leaders in the Church. Whether you gave toward scholarships, helping United become debt free, or to a specific program, your gifts are allowing United students to go higher and follow God’s call. As God has used you to help others Go Higher, may the words and stories in this Annual Report encourage you as you look to the Lord and rise.

Callie Picardo Vice President for Development

In the midst of pain, in the midst of suffering, we can go higher. It’s a matter of focus. We’ve got to look to the Lord, focusing on the one who is certain in the midst of uncertainty, the one who is constant in the face of change, the one who says, “Be still!” and the wind and waves obey.

When on campus, students and faculty are greeted as they enter the West Wing by this hand-carved statue of an eagle, as a reminder of Isaiah 40:31. This beautiful piece of art was a gift created by United alumnus Dr. Ivan Kurtz, ’59.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? — Isaiah 43:19

President’s Update It appears God is doing some new things at United, even in the midst of health, racial and political crises. God is doing a new thing at United financially. The Seminary ended fiscal year 2020 with a net surplus of $1.5 million. This was largely because United received government grants totaling $822,000 through the Paycheck Protection Program and the CARES Act, on top of a 5% reduction in expenses. God is doing a new thing in enrollment this fall. Both masters and doctoral enrollment exceeded projections for the first time in years, with a 17% increase in new students for Fall 2020 compared to Fall 2019, totaling 210 students in the doctoral program and 236 students in the masters program. God is doing a new thing with partners in church renewal. In the 2020-21 academic year United is beginning partnerships with innovative leaders finding new ways to share the Gospel. Fresh Expressions is a worldwide initiative that equips pastors and lay leaders to take the Gospel outside the doors of the church. Through a new Fresh Expressions House of Studies (see sidebar), developed in partnership with Fresh Expressions US, United is providing practical training for such contextual models of ministry.

19 20

Mosaix Global Network (see sidebar) is another church renewal group that prepares pastors and congregations to thrive as healthy multicultural communities. United has invited Mosaix to lead cultural intelligence training for seminary leaders and students, and a group from Mosaix will present at United’s January 2021 DMin Intensive, “Developing and Leading Multicultural Congregations.” In partnership with Dr. Brian Law and Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey, United is also equipping pastors to lead renewal through the power of a spiritual movement. In January 2021, Dr. Law and Rev. Kibbey will begin a new Doctor of Ministry focus group to encourage pastors and churches to “Open the Floodgates” and allow the powerful spirit of God to pour in and transform lives, congregations and the world. God is doing a new thing with the establishment of the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center. Beginning in January 2021, the Center will provide a hub of learning for church leaders seeking the framework, support and courage to introduce the Gospel of Jesus Christ in new and creative ways to the world around them. (see sidebar) God is doing a new thing through the Burn the Mortgage Campaign. When the Board of Trustees launched the campaign in November 2016, the Seminary owed nearly $4 million on its mortgage and was spending about $400,000 annually in interest and principal payments. The goal is to pay off the mortgage by United’s 150th anniversary on October 11, 2021, and to convert those mortgage payments into money for student scholarships. As a result of the great generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Rick and Vicki James, Dr. and Mrs. Bill and Carole West, Drs. James and Barbara Holsinger, Mrs. Nancy Zimmerman and more than 200 others, the Seminary has reduced its building debt to about $1.13 million, which we hope to eliminate by October 2021 through the possible sale of unused property near United’s campus and gifts and pledges. (See full update on page 6) My prayer is that we will all perceive the new thing that God is doing at United Theological Seminary to enable us to prepare more faithful and fruitful Christian pastors and church leaders who make disciples of Jesus Christ. Grace and peace,

Dr. Kent Millard President

Fresh Expressions House of Studies

Michael Beck

Jorge Acevedo

Church Renewal has long been a focus of United, but this year, the Seminary is partnering with Rev. Dr. Michael Beck and Rev. Jorge Acevedo to take it a step deeper with the introduction of Fresh Expressions programs for visionary leaders called to cultivate transformational Christian communities. A fresh expression is a missional, contextual form of church focused on reaching those who are not yet

part of any church. Thousands of fresh expressions are emerging across the globe, and existing congregations are experiencing revival as they cultivate fresh expressions in dog parks, exercise groups, coffee shops, and wherever the Lord leads. You can now earn a Doctor of Ministry or a Master of Divinity with a focus on Fresh Expressions or expand your ministry through continuing education or a certificate.

Chip Freed

United is leaning in and examining our own racial and cultural prejudices. Mosaix led our executive team and faculty through a faithbased assessment in October to provide insights into our Cultural Intelligence and Cultural Values. The Mosaix team will lead the January 2021 doctoral intensive, taking mentors and students through a similar process.

Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center

Bishop Bruce Ough

Sue Nilson Kibbey

Continuing United’s legacy of innovation in theological education, the Seminary is pleased to announce the launch of the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center in January 2021. The center honors Bishop Bruce Ough’s legacy of pioneering ministry and leadership in the Church. Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey has been named as the center’s inaugural director. Over the past several years, Rev. Kibbey has enabled more than 160 congregations to grow in spiritual depth, mission outreach, membership, worship attendance and financial health. The mission of the Innovation Center is to equip the Church in creative forms of church renewal, forming

“new wineskins” to reach the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. With the concept of Breakthrough Prayer at its core, the center will prepare pastors and their ministry teams to collectively discern and courageously step forward to reach the people God has called them to pursue. Participants will receive a unique combination of training, application assignments, and guidance for implementation to jumpstart their ministry. The center will also provide an ongoing, collaborative “laboratory” in which ministry practitioners can learn, create and share innovative and practical resources that keep congregations relevant to their mission fields.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

Mark DeYmaz

An increasingly diverse and cynical society no longer trusts a message of God’s love for all people as proclaimed from otherwise systemically segregated pulpits and pews. United is partnering with Dr. Mark DeYmaz, Rev. Chip Freed and the Mosaix Global Network to offer a new Doctor of Ministry focus group in Disruptive Church Leadership, launching January 2021, for pastors called to lead healthy multiethnic and economically diverse congregations.

A Breakthrough Moment Preparing to Burn the Mortgage in October 2021 Who was a part of the breakthrough moment in your life? Who impacted your faith in such a meaningful way that you were never the same again? United wants to help you celebrate those men and women as we look toward a breakthrough moment in the life of the seminary. We invite you to make a gift to burn the mortgage in honor or memory of a person who was part of a breakthrough moment in your spiritual life. If you provide contact information, we will send a card letting them know the impact they had on your life. We will also include their names in our Burn the Mortgage commemorative book or, for gifts totaling over $25,000, on a leaf on the donor recognition tree to be displayed in United’s lobby.

19 20

The Seminary is so close to this breakthrough moment. In November 2016, United began a campaign to become debt free. Ten years earlier, United purchased the former Jewish Community Center on Denlinger Road. While this campus has been significantly more cost-effective to maintain, a mortgage balance of $3.97 million was costing the seminary $400,000 per year in principal and interest payments. We wanted to invest that money in scholarships for students instead, so we embarked on an ambitious goal to pay off the mortgage and become debt free by United’s 150th anniversary on October 11, 2021. In January 2020, Mr. and Mrs. Rick and Vicki James of Fort Wayne, IN, issued a challenge. They doubled their

Mr. and Mrs. Rick and Vicki James

initial pledge of $500,000, committing a total of $1 million to the campaign. They encouraged United alumni/ae and friends to pray about whether they, too, could step up and give a little bit more, perhaps even double what they originally gave. Since then, we have received over $300,000 more in commitments. One of those commitments came from Drs. Jim and Barbara Holsinger. The Holsingers originally gave $125,000 to the campaign and prayerfully decided to double their pledge to $250,000. Dr. and Mrs. Bill and Carole West, who had originally committed $200,000 to the campaign, paid off their pledge early and gave an additional $50,000 to bring their total to $250,000. With gifts ranging from $5 to $1,000,000, over 200 donors have given to the campaign. Thank you! As we enter the final year leading up to United’s anniversary, we have $1,128,000 to go to reach that breakthrough moment for United and the Burn the Mortgage campaign. This is where we need you! Will you join us? Every dollar contributes to a breakthrough moment, not just for the Seminary, but for future leaders to come. As United becomes debt free, more dollars become available for scholarships, which means students graduate with less debt and more freedom to follow the Lord’s call wherever God leads them. As you help United go higher, you help leaders rise up, and those leaders help the Church soar.

Mark your calendars to join us on October 10, 2021, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of United Theological Seminary.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

2020 Commencement On September 26, 2020, United celebrated 114 graduates who have answered God’s call and are going higher. Like many, their commencement plans were upended, but with the courage of an eagle flying into the storm, they did not let that deter them. Commencement was originally scheduled for May and postponed until September with the hope of gathering in person. When United’s leadership watched COVID-19 cases continue to rise over the summer, they pivoted to hold commencement virtually.

While the modality changed, many things stayed the same: • Incredible faithful, fruitful Christian pastors and leaders received their diplomas and were celebrated with great joy. • Bishop Sir Walter Lee Mack, Jr. (DMin, ’97), gave a powerful commencement address and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. • The United community came together with friends and family from around the world to worship the Most High God.

Please join us in giving praise to God for the men and women who are faithfully serving the Lord as graduates of United Theological Seminary!

Bishop Sir Walter Lee Mack, Jr. receives Honorary Doctor of Divinity

19 20

One of the highest honors United can bestow is an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. While an academic degree is earned through coursework, an Honorary Doctor of Divinity is earned by a lifetime of ministry and leadership in the Church and world. Bishop Sir Walter Lee Mack, Jr. has done just that.

Bishop Mack also invests in other leaders of the church through coaching, speaking, the four books he’s written, the Renew Conference for Church Leadership and Laity, and, most recently, a group study and dialogue about race and reconciliation that a group of 50 white evangelical pastors invited him to lead.

Bishop Mack has a passion for creatively reaching people outside the four walls of the church. Under his leadership, Union Baptist Church in Winston Salem, NC, has opened new avenues for connection between church and community. Creative ministries led by the congregation of over 4,000 members include Union Urban Ministries, the Corner 2 Corner Drug Dealers Conference, the Gospel Ice Cream Truck, a First Fridays concert series to reach young adults, and the Youth Character Football League.

When presenting the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree, President Millard shared the impact of Bishop Mack’s leadership: “We thank God for providing Bishop Mack as a leader among us, as a powerful preacher, creative Christian leader, wise spiritual guide, church growth expert, highly effective mentor, and faithful follower of Jesus Christ.”

“The breadth and depth of the educational experience was more than I could have imagined. I grew exponentially. I grew spiritually. I learned about myself and made lifelong friendships along the way.”

A 1997 Doctor of Ministry alumnus, Bishop Mack now serves as a senior mentor in United’s doctoral program, co-leading the Effective Leadership for Creative Ministry in the Post-Modern Church focus group. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for United Theological Seminary.

“United helped me to be Spirit-filled as a pastor and for my church to be Spirit-filled in ministry.” — Doug Fox, Doctor of Ministry

— Kimberly Davis, Doctor of Ministry

Spirit Led, Renewing the Church!

“Because of United, I am a better husband, a better father and a better leader. I am excited to receive a Master of Divinity degree, but I am more excited that the Lord used the seminary to shape and mold me.” — Dion Frasier, Master of Divinity

“While I believe I was a good pastor prior to my time at United, I can honestly say that United has transformed more than my ministry, it has also transformed my whole life. While there seems to be a running joke about ‘Things they didn’t teach us in seminary,’ I feel that many of the students at United could say ‘Can you believe they taught this at my seminary?’”

“The diversity of the professors and students has impacted my ministry in a myriad of ways: I read authors I would have otherwise not encountered, traveled to South Africa, and learned more about myself and my ministry than ever before.” — Eric Falker, Master of Divinity

“I love United because of its vast diversity and ability to shape minds for the renewal of God’s church. United allowed me to take the leap to renew my heart and call to ministry by taking on hard questions for the present reality of the church.” — Zachary Beasley, Doctor of Ministry

“United enabled me to connect and develop meaningful relationships with Christian leaders from around the nation and world. It expanded my understanding of the Christian faith and how to be a transformative Christian leader. I found a renewed passion to help my congregation experience the life-changing power and presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.” — Hugh Hendrickson, Doctor of Ministry

— Tabi Upton, Pre-doctoral Program

“My education at United has led to so much personal growth and self-discovery while strengthening and broadening my faith through the challenging questions and perspective offered by those in the United community. I am certain that I would not be who I am today without them. United offered the opportunity to interact with others of differing perspectives and ideals — in fact, it was encouraged! United didn’t tell me what to believe but challenged me to further develop my own beliefs through interaction with the Trinity and with others. Because of United, I have a better understanding of who I am created to be and a greater sense of who God is — and a vision of how those are meant to work together in ministry.” — Abby Lightle, Master of Divinity

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

9 Annual Report

“My understanding of the Bible, Christianity and God has been stretched and deepened. I feel steadier as I read the word, write out my questions and concerns before the Father, and feel eager to share what I have learned with others. God has given me an amazing platform in Christian radio. As I co-host our live morning show for three hours daily, sharing scripture, devotions, and discussions on current events, theology informs all of this!”

Learning That Fits Your Lifestyle

19 20

When you discern seminary might be the next step in following God’s call, that doesn’t mean everything else stops. That’s why United offers flexible learning options to make high-quality education accessible for working pastors and professionals, wherever they live and work. This has become even more important in 2020 with restrictions on travel and gatherings. This year, United’s intensive and hybrid courses moved to the LIVE classroom for portions students normally would have attended in person. While many missed the in-person interactions on campus, students were able to connect safely with classmates and continue their education uninterrupted. United has been offering courses online since 2009, regularly innovating and improving ways to prepare faithful, fruitful pastors and Christian leaders at a distance. In 2014, United introduced the Live Interactive Virtual Education (LIVE) classroom for those who are interested in distance education but prefer the classroom experience. Through United’s LIVE classroom, students can attend live lectures and interact in discussions from their home or office. Through both asynchronous online courses and LIVE options, students can choose the environment that best suits their learning style and schedule. United also helps prepare faculty and educators who want to teach online through the Online Teaching Strategies for Ministry Education Certificate Course.

Many of these innovations occurred under the leadership of Ms. Phyllis Ennist, United’s Associate Dean of Distance Education, who retired June 30, 2020. Since 2008, she kept United at the forefront of distance learning platforms, teaching methods and technologies. While this retirement was planned pre-COVID, we are grateful for Ms. Heather Shellabarger, who has worked alongside Phyllis since 2014. Heather is a United alumna and is currently pursuing a PhD in instructional design and technology. When she stepped into the role of Director of Distance Education on July 1, 2020, Heather was fully prepared to ensure United’s technology was running smoothly for socially distanced teaching — whether online or in the classroom. If you are interested in learning more about United’s flexible options for yourself or to share with others, we invite you to visit united.edu/flexible-options or contact the Office of Admissions at 800.322.5817.

Mr. Cochrane views a library as a living resource, evolving to provide the best in current scholarly resources. As part of a renewed emphasis on the promotion of information literacy, the library took the Writing Center under its wing this summer and hired a Writing Center Assistant, United alumnus Jimmy Mallory ’19. The new Writing Center is located in the library Circulation Office and provides students with assistance both locally and remotely. The Student Computer Lab, formerly located on the campus building’s second floor, was relocated to the library’s mainstacks in order to make it more accessible and provide better availability for staff assistance.

United also now enjoys membership in the Digital Theological Library (DTL), a consortium of some 30 theological libraries that pool resources to provide member institutions with hundreds of thousands of eBooks and millions of other online resources. United’s library recently contributed a curated subject guide on African American Resources for United students and other DTL members. The library staff is also working to make course reserve titles available in DTL accessible to students through United’s online learning platform. The digital availability of these titles will offer students considerable savings on book purchases. The O’Brien Library is open to alumni/ae, church leaders, researchers and the general public. To learn more about the library, gain access to resources, or for assistance with theological research, contact obrienlibrary@united.edu or 937.529.2234.

Meet Ken Cochrane Director of the Library I am greatly honored and humbled to be of service to this wonderful community! My journey at United began in January 2014 as the Assistant Director of the Library. Before moving to Dayton, I received my MA in Theology from Ohio Dominican University in 2007 (where I met my lovely wife, Julie!) and my Master of Library and Information Science from Kent State. While I have spent most of my life in Ohio, I was born in Iowa and studied overseas, both in Japan and Scotland. I enjoy reading historical fiction and contemplative theology and studying Celtic languages. My motto: Love United, Live to Serve, Lead the Change!

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

O’Brien Library: A Living Resource

Alumna Spotlight: Meagan O’Brien ’20

19 20 Meagan O’Brien felt a call to ministry early in life. But even with confidence in that call, she felt a restlessness as she moved from secular ministry to lay leadership, and finally, to service as an associate pastor of a large city church. She knew in her heart that God had more for her.

“[Seminary] helped me think theologically,” she says. “Part of that is, how do I make [theology] more applicable for me and other people?” After serving for 14 years as associate pastor at The Gathering United Methodist Church in St. Louis, MO, Meagan discerned that God was calling her to expand her ministry as a senior pastor. When her pastor suggested United, she couldn’t put off seminary any longer. “[United] had such a good online program,” says Meagan. “I just applied and said ’yes’ to United, and then I found out so many reasons why God had led me there.”

Through United, Meagan was reassured to discover courses that resonated with her head and her heart with knowledge both meaningful and practical to her ministry. When it came time to graduate in May 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, church looked different than when Meagan had entered seminary. Moreover, Meagan was preparing to move from a large urban congregation to a small rural one. She needed that practical knowledge more than ever. “[Seminary] helped me think theologically,” she says. “Part of that is, how do I make [theology] more applicable for me and other people… How do I put those pieces together in a way that makes sense for what is happening now?” Reflecting on her seminary journey, Meagan sees that United gave her confidence in herself and in her call that had been missing. She urges others who are feeling the same persistent nudge to take a leap of faith. “United is one of the best decisions you can make,” she says. “It’s foundational for your ministry and for your life.”

Mentor Spotlight: Rev. Dr. Phillip Pointer ’14 and Rev. Dr. Charles Goodman “I’m grateful for the United family. I’m grateful for what it’s done for me personally, and I’m hopeful for the opportunity to continue that legacy.”

Reverend Drs. Phillip Pointer and Charles Goodman have journeyed together in ministry for over 20 years. When God brought them together through a mutual friend and mentor, it was the beginning of a lasting friendship that would shape their ministries together and apart. From beginning their ministries to tackling new opportunities, Dr. Pointer and Dr. Goodman were able to hold one another accountable as they grew in leadership. “We were just young pastors trying to go out and lead our churches,” Dr. Goodman says. “We didn’t know anything, but we had each other.” Now leading mega-churches with nearly 10,000 members, Drs. Pointer and Goodman have recognized their next step in ministry. Remembering the friendship and mentoring that carried them through their own Christian walks, together they answered God’s call to mentor a Doctor of Ministry cohort at United focused on teaching young men and women to become Christian leaders.

Dr. Pointer, who received his doctorate at United in 2014, is not only grateful for the opportunity to co-lead such an impactful DMin group, but also expresses his appreciation for the influence United had on his growth as a pastor. “I’m grateful for the United family. I’m grateful for what it’s done for me personally, and I’m hopeful for the opportunity to continue that legacy,” says Dr. Pointer. “More than anything, it thrills me to say that someone we’re mentoring might become or do something that impacts the nation. And if not, those that we are mentoring, I pray that they just impact their local contexts in powerful ways. That’s my prayer.” Through friendship and partnership, from leadership to legacy, Dr. Goodman and Dr. Pointer have assisted United in helping ministers go higher, forming and preparing Christian leaders to leave a lasting impact on the Church and in their communities for generations to come.

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

13 Annual Report

Reverend Drs. Charles Goodman (left) and Phillip Pointer (right)

These experienced pastors knew they had something special in their plan to educate new leaders, helping the upcoming generation to “go higher” in God’s calling. Much like the churches under their leadership, the new focus group has shown incredible momentum. The group started off as one of the largest new cohorts at United and is still consistently growing. Drs. Pointer and Goodman had seen a ministerial need and, partnering with United, they had faithfully stepped in to fill it.

“I loved the model United had,” remembers Dr. Goodman. “I said, man, I need you to do this with me... Once I got ’P’ [Pointer] on board, I knew that it would work.”

Spirit Led, Renewing the Church!

2020 Alumni/ae Awards Effective Ministry Award Rev. Dr. Keith Troy ’92 has faithfully served as senior pastor of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, OH, since October 1983. Under his leadership, the church has grown from 100 members to nearly 5,000. Dr. Troy has impacted the physical health of the congregation as well. When he noticed many men dying of preventable causes, he introduced an initiative to encourage members to get a physical in the next 3 months. If finances or transportation were a problem, the church would provide.

Rev. Dr. Cynthia Davis ’05 spent 24 years serving God in the healthcare system as a registered nurse and administrator before answering God’s call to vocational ministry in The United Methodist Church. Dr. Davis has been appointed district superintendent by two different bishops and currently serves the Mississippi River District in the Memphis Conference. She serves on numerous boards and regularly speaks and presents workshops. Combining her care for both spiritual and physical health, Dr. Davis focused her Doctor of Ministry Project on “Promoting Healthy Dietary Lifestyles to Prevent Obesity in African American Adolescents.”

His doctoral project addressed “Participation of Pastors in Addressing Health Disparities of African Americans.”

Spirit Led, Renewing the Church!

Joni Sancken, Associate Professor of Homiletics, has been using her work on preaching in the wake of trauma to equip the Church in this season. In January 2020, she led a trauma-related workshop for the Ohio River Valley district of the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church. She also delivered a plenary address for United’s doctoral intensive on Pastoral Care in the Wake of Trauma. She authored

a short essay, “Preaching Amidst Global Trauma,” published by Ministry Matters, March 25, 2020. In June 2020, she was interviewed by Bishop Gregory Palmer for his, Faith and Works series, about “Prophetic Preaching in Unprecedented Times.” The first ever fully-online Summer Preaching Seminar, “Exodus Preaching,” had record-setting attendance, with 14 students and more than 70 other participants.

FORTHCOMING

Many local churches are stuck in a rut, have reached a plateau, or — worst of all — declining. The temptation is to serve up the ministry models that worked in another time and space, but ultimately feel safe to existing churches. Like ordering from a menu at the franchise chain restaurant and expecting the meal to be palatable in the local context, many churches try and start something new by serving up the same old thing, failing to discover what their local community is actually hungry for.

Preachers can proclaim God’s grace in a divisive culture.

From Franchise to Local Dive explores what it means to multiply ministry by cooking with local flavor. Whether you want to start a new service or a brandnew campus, this workshop will help you discover how to make a ministry recipe that will keep people coming back for more. The local church is not called to settle for the fast food chain mentality that cranks out disciples with slick slogans, flashy trends and regurgitated practices. Rather the call is to be a local, homegrown, farm-fresh, organic ministry that uses authentic ingredients to win people for Jesus. In this book, Jason Moore and Rosario Picardo offer an important resource designed to help congregations multiply their ministries by learning how to perfect their winning recipes.

Joni Sancken, Associate Professor of Homiletics Getting to God: Preaching Good News in a Troubled World (with Luke A. Powery and John Rottman, Abingdon Press, 2021)

God shows up, surprises us, and catches us off guard in offbeat settings and contexts. We name these saving encounters “gospel.” Naming God’s action in our world can be challenging for many today. Divisions in our culture make preaching feel perilous. Preachers turn to the biblical text and long to speak a powerful word of good news but many struggles with how to name God’s grace amidst complex contextual issues and relational dynamics. Seminary does little to equip pastors for this important aspect of ministry. This book demonstrates how preachers can proclaim God’s grace in our world today by building on the theological grammar and preaching method proposed by Paul Scott Wilson. This book operates on several levels, showing preachers how to contextualize a theologically rich approach to preaching, expanding the horizon of ministry for pastors who might not have experience in the contexts discussed in the book, and it equips pastors with the vital practice of learning to look for and name God’s active presence in our world. Since the twelfth century, theologians have found a counterfactual question irresistible: “If Adam had not sinned, would the Son have become incarnate?” Most modern commentators on the question reference the classic disagreement between those who follow Thomas Aquinas and those who follow John Duns Scotus. If Adam Had Not Sinned is a study of the medieval debates over the motive for the incarnation, from Anselm of Canterbury to John Duns Scotus. Detailing the larger context within which Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus developed their influential responses, If Adam Had Not Sinned comes to the surprising conclusion that the responses of Thomas and Scotus are substantially reconcilable.
