Heartbeats

This calendar continues the celebrations of our centennial year. As part of the festivities, we curated the 100 Heartbeats project to showcase 100 stories from Keren Hayesod’s history. Keren Hayesod is integral to the pulsing beat of life in Israel and so too are the 100 top moments that make up our organisation’s history. Throughout the pages of this calendar, you will gain a glimpse into these special moments and our leaders over the years. Keren Hayesod was founded in 1920. Three years after the Balfour Declaration, the World Zionist Congress voted in favour of establishing an official fundraising arm. Early leaders included Chaim Weizmann, Albert Einstein and Ze’ev Jabotinsky. Since then, Keren Hayesod has been a part of Israel’s DNA. We are ingrained in the infrastructure, communities and people that make up our homeland. Today, one hundred years since our establishment, our impact can be seen throughout the country. Essential services, academic institutions and whole communities exist thanks to our help. Our impact continues as we see new immigrants, residents of the periphery and vulnerable populations continue to benefit from critical initiatives we support. Keren Hayesod is the sole body responsible for ensuring that crucial national projects receive the necessary resources that enable our people to thrive. The establishment of modern Israel was only a dream at the time of our founding. One hundred years later, we have been a part of Israel’s development every step of the way. As we enter into our next century, we remain dedicated and committed to helping the State of Israel and assisting our people to flourish. On our 100th birthday, Keren Hayesod-UIA is proudly still for The People of Israel.

These are unusual times for us to be living in, as we face the novel Coronavirus Crisis that has plagued our entire world. Now, communities across the globe are dealing with the uncertainty of a pandemic that has had a devastating impact on our health, economies, and our daily lives. For what should have been a year of celebrations, as we marked Keren Hayesod’s centennial year, we were forced to postpone delegations and events and were confined to our homes. For 100 years, Keren Hayesod has been at the forefront of building and strengthening the State of Israel and the Jewish people. Despite the dire circumstances of the past several months, Keren Hayesod continued to address the most critical and urgent issues facing the People of Israel. Over the next several months, we are anticipating continued immigration to Israel and an even larger wave next year. Despite the current circumstances, it is our priority to continue supporting Aliyah and to ensure an easy absorption process for those who have uprooted their lives and chose to call Israel home.

In honour of the past 100 years, this year’s calendar is designed in the spirit of the “100 Heartbeats” that were displayed on our website and social media for 100 days, depicting the Keren Hayesod story from 100 different angles: events, tales of the doers and shakers, the wide spectrum of activities, the struggles and the achievements. This new year brings a new set of challenges; however, we are more confident than ever in our ability to continue serving as a beacon of hope and light for the People of Israel. It is important for us to remember that we must always stand united and safeguard the relevance and purpose of Keren Hayesod. On behalf of all of us, we would like to wish Keren Hayesod’s worldwide family, the Jewish people and the Friends of Israel a year of health, happiness and blessings, and hopefully this year we will see you in Jerusalem! Shana Tova Sincerely,

Thanks to your continued support and dedication, Keren Hayesod was able to help improve the lives of those in Israel’s periphery and ensure that communities deeply affected by the Coronavirus crisis had the essential items they needed to continue with daily life. Together with the Jewish Agency, we made it a priority during the height of COVID-19 to work closely with the campaigns that were harshly impacted by the pandemic to provide support to their local Jewish communities. Additionally, without any hesitation, we worked alongside the Jewish Agency to ensure that our ongoing support for our programs in Israel did not diminish. As we head into the Jewish year 5781, we want to take this opportunity to thank you for remaining dedicated to the State of Israel and the Jewish people. It brought a sense of joy and deep appreciation to all of us at Keren Hayesod in Jerusalem to see that our global family had the fortitude and understanding for what it means to stand united in the face of tragedy and to continue providing for Israel’s disadvantaged and weaker populations.

Our Vision Keren Hayesod – UIA is and will continue to be the world’s leading fundraising organisation for the People of Israel. It enables all those who want to support Israel as the Jewish homeland, enhance the lives of the People of Israel, and strengthen the connection between them and Jewish communities around the world, to express their commitment by contributing funds to activities, projects and enterprises Keren Hayesod – UIA deems of value and priority in promoting these causes. Keren Hayesod – UIA will continue to be a bridge that embodies this unbreakable connection, and makes it possible for all to act as a collective — working for a strong Israel at the heart of the Jewish world; a secure Israel that can provide a home and safe haven for all Jews; and a successful Israel that everyone can be proud of. Keren Hayesod – UIA’s work is based on the lessons of the Jewish people’s history and at its core is the Jewish principle of mutual responsibility — . The People of Israel —

— will always be there for one another.

It is my pleasure to extend my warmest wishes to you for the new Jewish year 5781 as we continue our mission of supporting the People of Israel. During the past year much has changed and yet nothing has changed. This year should have seen us together in Israel, our Keren Hayesod-UIA family united to celebrate 100 years, instead we found ourselves facing a worldwide pandemic. This is when our true Jewish Spirit came to the fore – Kol Yisrael Arevim Ze Lazeh – and regardless of the challenges facing individual communities, we were there for each other to provide critical assistance in these unique times. In a difficult year, we recommitted to standing strong with the people of Israel. We marked our centennial not with a party but by remembering our mission and reaffirming our solidarity with our homeland. Despite the difficult situation we were able to hold our annual IWD Board meeting virtually. Presidents reported on the current status of their campaigns given the extraordinary circumstances and shared the challenges they were facing as well as the initiatives and activities that had proved successful. Women’s Division has always played an important role in supporting those in need in Israel through its commitment to the Jewish Agency programs. This year however due to the impact of the coronavirus the needs became even greater, urgent and critical. In response the women decided to focus on those needs and make every effort to fundraise where possible, in a sensitive manner. To date there have been some very positive results.

Our achievements in Women’s Division and Keren Hayesod’s milestone anniversary all deserve to be celebrated. We will mark them and meet again in Israel when the time is right. Until then, I encourage you to visit www.kh-uia.org.il/100beats/ to see 100 incredible stories from 100 years of unparalleled work on behalf of the People of Israel. We have already started to write the next century of Keren Hayesod-UIA history. We are shaping it with a special worldwide family, women around the world who are proudly Zionistic and have a commitment to stand with our people through all circumstances. Wishing you, your families and the Keren Hayesod-UIA worldwide family a happy, healthy and blessed New Year. Shana Tova!

The International Women’s Division of Keren Hayesod-UIA currently operates in the following countries: Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela, Europe: France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, The Netherlands English-speaking countries: Australia, Canada, South Africa E-mail: Marcelo@khuia.org

During the Board meeting I was re-elected International Women’s Division President for another term which I consider a great honour. It is a privilege for me to be working with outstanding women, strong dedicated leaders and I value and thank them for their advice and support. The love and dedication we have for Israel is unwavering and the past year has shown that we are able to overcome even the most unexpected of challenges.

For the People of Israel

Dear Friends, This year marks Keren Hayesod – UIA’s 100th year milestone and we pause to acknowledge the tremendous impact that the organisation has had on the State of Israel and the People of Israel. UIA’s projects are of national significance determined in collaboration with the Government of Israel and the Jewish Agency. Our projects address humanitarian needs of the People of Israel, enabling them to live with dignity and make a positive contribution to Israeli society. Keren Hayesod – UIA programs focus on supporting underprivileged and marginalised sectors of Israeli society in Education through the Net@ program, which provides youth at risk with training in technology, personal development and social activism, giving them the tools they need to succeed. The Profession for Life Program, fast tracks qualified Olim, into their profession while supporting their family with Hebrew lessons and job seeking assistance, transitioning them into Israeli life. The Aliyah program supported 34,000 immigrants last year. This program provides Olim with a safe heaven, it assists with visas, language, job placement and housing.

Our projects operate in over 150 centres across Israel, have had an impact on over 500,000 Israeli citizens and helped integrate over 3 million olim into Israeli society. The significant impact we have made in the last year on all our projects is outlined in the Impact Report sent out with your calendar. Please contact UIA if there are any programs you would like to discuss. At its core, Keren Hayesod - UIA is about a commitment to the People of Israel and the value of mutual responsibility among the Jewish people. Rosh Hashanah brings an opportunity to reflect on, and be grateful for, our successes and achievements and we thank our donors, sponsors, volunteers and staff for their dedication, passion and support. We are proud to be the bridge that connects Israel, world Jewry and friends of Israel. May we continue to pray for good health, happiness and lasting peace to Medinat Yisrael and the rest of the world during this global pandemic. Shana Tova Sincerely,

The Welfare of Israeli citizens is a high priority of KH-UIA, with programs such as the Aleh program, which assists children with severe disabilities, providing them with the care and treatment they need. The Lone Immigrant Soldiers program assists olim soldiers with homes and career paths after leaving the army, so they can integrate into Israeli society. The Amigour Sheltered housing program provides homes for 75,000 elderly and Holocaust survivors in 57 housing facilities, enabling them to enjoy their later years in dignity. There are 4 Youth Villages across Israel that transform the lives of children that are living in high risk homes, giving them the opportunity to heal and flourish. 12,000 young Jews from around the world participate in the Masa program every year, allowing teenagers to be immersed in the Israel experience unlocking a life time of Jewish commitment, involvement and connection. YOUR SUPPORT MAKES THIS HAPPEN FOR THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL ABSORPTION For the People of Israel

Profession for life provides special absorption vocational training programs for young adults

ALIYAH Keren Hayesod – United Israel Appeal is and will continue to be the world’s leading fundraising organisation for the People of Israel. It enables all those who want to support Israel as the Jewish homeland, enhance the lives of the People of Israel, and strengthen the connection between them and Jewish communities around the world, to express their commitment by contributing funds to activities, projects and enterprises that Keren Hayesod – UIA deems of value and priority. Keren Hayesod – UIA will continue to be a bridge that embodies this unbreakable connection and makes it possible for all to act as a collective —working for a strong Israel at the heart of the Jewish world; a secure Israel that can provide a home and safe haven for all Jews; and a successful Israel that everyone can be proud of. Keren Hayesod – UIA’s work is based on the lessons of the Jewish people’s history and at its core is the Jewish principle of mutual responsibility will always be there for one another — the People of Israel.
