r. T.R. Goulding built his gated estate next to the Ironton, Mo., hospital in 1873. Eightytwo years later, St. Louis artists Ethel and Michael Chomyk, at the recommendation of their friends, painter Milton Frenzel, and mosaic artist Emil Frei, purchased the estate where they established their ceramic company Chanticleer Pottery. Since 1955, Chanticleer has been the choice pottery and ceramic sculpture for discerning collectors and decorators throughout the Mid-West and beyond. Now you have the opportunity to purchase this enchanting 4 acre estate at online public auction. Also selling will be the lifetime collection of art, antiques, automobiles, and clay working equipment.

One of the True E

ntering the roughly four-acre Chanticleer Pottery Estate, one passes through the gated entrance, and gets a first look at the heavily wooded grounds. To the west sits a brick ranchstyle home, currently rented and providing an alternative income source, but which could also be used as a groundskeeper’s house. Winding back to the east, the all-brick, English manor-influenced primary residence towers over the wishbone drive and abundance of statuary. The myriad-old growth hardwoods compliment the architecture, together creating a secluded and enchanting atmosphere. The lower driveway leads past the detached 2-car garage and proceeds to circle the large oval arbor covered in wisteria. At the foot of Shepherd Mountain, visitors are introduced to the spacious workshop that served for over half a century as the studio and office of Chanticleer Pottery. Circling back to the west takes one to the Chanticleer gift shop, which originally acted as Dr. Goulding’s carriage house and still retains a desirable rustic appearance. The north approach to the main house enters through iron gates onto the bricked back patio. Verdant and well-shaded with shrubbery and ivied trees, this is setting is straight out of a Beatrice Potter story. Looking to the right at the northwest wing of the home, one sees the elevated gazebo that houses the four-person hot tub.

Gems of Missouri T

he residence itself is a three-story abode that harmoniously combines original architectural elements with comforts of modern living. The side porch has been enclosed to create a family/sitting room with access to the dining room and the kitchen. Westward past the kitchen, one passes through the breezeway – turning left for the cellar or continuing straight to arrive at what was once the carriageway – but now, closed off, acts as a well-lighted summer dining room. The first-story toilette and pantry with furnace room finish off the first floor. A winding staircase provides access to the second story. Currently outfitted for four bedrooms (and potential for a fifth), the spacious second floor has two full baths, and direct access to both the front balcony and the rear hot tub gazebo. The single-room third story was used by the Chomyks as a painting studio and offers a bird’s eye view of the property. As mentioned before, the north end of the property is the base of Shepherd Mountain. Comprised of dense forest, this part of the real estate is the location of the cave – a favorite picnic destination for the Chomyks and their friends. This property is available for the first time in over 50 years! Please visit www.UCWallingford. com to register and bid on this piece of Missouri history.
