FAQs: Local United Council Chapters What is the value of a UC student org at my campus? The answer to this question is threefold: (1) Greater student agency: Having a UC Chapter allows students to have a greater voice and influence in statewide student organizing. Instead of waiting for UC staffers or board members to approach individual students with ways to get involved, a local UC chapter means that students have greater agency to organize on their own with support from UC staff and board. (2) Access to unique resources: United Council possesses certain unique resources that are open to any student who chooses to get involved. For example, UC has a registered lobbyist who is able to directly impact state policies; a full-time professional staff whose mission it is to empower students; direct connections to and dialogue with Chancellors, Regents, and Legislators, etc. (3) Magnification of student power: As a statewide organization, United Council has connections throughout all 26 UW campuses. By collaborating with students from across the state, instead of simply within individual campuses, we can coordinate our efforts and magnify student power. What will be the expectations of leadership positions? UC Chapter directors will be expected to both (1) work on UC’s five voted-on campaigns and (2) engage with UC as a whole. In particular, the latter will entail advocacy work to ensure the future of United Council. Regarding the specific time commitment of the directors, regular meetings will be expected, but details will be determined by the UC Chapter’s leadership as soon as they form.
