Adell was a champion of United Way, the arts, and the library. She dedicated her retirement years working to improve lives in our community. She was the United Way Board President, twice. She served on the Internal Operations Committee for many years lending her administrative expertise to help insure United Way of Lane County’s transparency and fiscal soundness. She helped to build and grow the Women & Philanthropy Initiative.

HEALTH

Preparing children to succeed in school and life

Moving families from poverty to financial stability

Ensuring people have access to basic health care

By 2020 the majority of Lane County children entering kindergarten will demonstrate age-appropriate literacy skills and social/emotional development to be more successful in school and life.

By 2020 a greater percentage of low-wage households will have the means to get by at least two months in the event of a sudden loss of income and a greater percentage of households will live at or above 200% of the Federal Poverty Line.

By 2020 we will expand access to existing insurance programs and connect 15,000 uninsured people to a community-based system of timely, affordable health care.

Preparing children to succeed in school and life

“Instead of helping some kids beat the odds, why don’t we just change the odds?” – Geoffrey Canada, President and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone Based on a growing body of research, local education experts believe if children enter school prepared for success, they have a better chance of continued academic achievement and on-time graduation. United Way of Lane County’s work is designed to intervene early to provide high-risk children with the building blocks of a good education and to prevent the kinds of problems that cause children to fail. We are working with our broad network of community partners to maximize early literacy skills, social emotional development, and family involvement so our children enter kindergarten with the skills necessary for success in school and in life.

DID YOU KNOW? • 85% of a child’s capacity to learn is established by age 5. • A typical middle-class 5-year-old is able to identify 22 letters and sounds of the alphabet, compared to just 9 letters for a child from a lowincome family.* • Parent or family involvement is a critical component of school readiness. • Approximately 1-in-3 students in high school today will not graduate on time or with a standard high school diploma. * Worden and Boettcher, 1990, Ehri and Roberts, 2006

Moving families from poverty to financial stability

DID YOU KNOW?

America has traditionally been a land where hard work leads to success.

• In 2007, 1 in 7 Lane County residents were living at or below the Federal Poverty Level, that’s less than $22,000 a year for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children).

Today, that commonly held ideal is in peril. Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, health care, child care, fuel and other needs. Locally this means that 20% of Lane County households rely on foodstamps just to get by. We are committed to helping individuals and families in our community achieve financial stability. By bringing together community partners, we are working to help lower-income individuals and families achieve greater financial stability and independence by supporting the programs and activities that will help them maximize their income, build savings and gain assets.

• In 2009, an estimated 7.7 percent of all U.S. households do not have access to a checking or savings account.* • United Way’s 2009 Community Assessment found that 34% of household respondents can only pay a month or less of bills if the main source of income stops. * FDIC National Survey of Unbanked

and Underbanked Households, Executive Summary, December 2009.

Ensuring people have access to basic health care

DID YOU KNOW?

Many of our neighbors lack access to basic health care. Connecting people to preventive care reduces the incidence of chronic diseases like diabetes. Diagnosing problems early prevents costly complications from conditions like high blood pressure, and is key to a healthy community.

• Studies report that approximately 21% of people in Lane County are uninsured—that is more than 73,000 individuals; one of the highest rates in Oregon. People without health insurance delay seeking care, do not receive basic or preventive treatment, and ultimately use the emergency departments as their point of access.

With health care costs outpacing inflation and with many residents in Lane County living without health insurance, even a minor health crisis can lead families to financial ruin. United Way of Lane County, through the 100% Access Coalition, is tackling the important issue of health by: 1. Developing a community-based low-cost health coverage product for small businesses with low wage workers. 2. Supporting local medical providers and safety net clinics who provide free and low-cost care to our community. 3. Assisting the building of a solid health information technology infrastructure throughout our local health care networks including our safety net clinics.

• Between 2005 and 2006 there were 198,651 visits to emergency departments and local hospitals in Lane County. Nearly 20% were visits by uninsured Lane County residents.

QUALITY OF LIFE Make people’s lives better today

As we pursue our broader goals, we never lose sight of the basic needs people in our community have. So we focus on programs that work, that make an impact on the daily reality of local Oregonians. By addressing the day-to-day, we help individuals. And by helping individuals, we make incremental change now that moves all of us forward for the future. United Way builds coalitions of strength. Our county-wide agency network provides basic needs, warm meals, safe shelter, and emergency assistance and 211Lane.org, the single online source for finding help and discovering ways to give a helping hand to others. Last year, 1.73 million hits on the “FIND HELP” section of 211Lane.org connected people to over 800 local services.

22

Imagine a weed-ridden field littered with rotting tires, broken glass, and rusty cans. Now take 25 volunteers to remove the debris, till the land, and plant garden beds. Their time is valued to have saved a few thousand dollars in labor, but what they’ve done is more than just that. They’ve made a safe place for kids and families, they’ve built a sustainable food source for the hungry, they’ve beautified that corner lot into something everyone can enjoy. That’s what volunteerism does for our community. United Way makes it easy for people to find their passion and give back through 211Lane.org. United Way builds community partnerships, pools resources and then brings together the people power needed to make lasting change.

DID YOU KNOW that nearly 4 out of 10 of people in Lane County volunteered last year? By rolling up our sleeves, through the volunteerism of our friends, co-workers, and neighbors, Lane County is a better place to live. Together, United Way and RSVP volunteers performed 172,844 hours— that’s $3,544,303 in job value donated!

As a part of the Volunteer Center, the United Way of Lane County is the sponsoring agency for RSVP of Lane County, a Senior Corps program of the Corporation for National & Community Service. The program invites persons 55 and older to give back to the community through a variety of long-term/continuous volunteering assignments and event volunteering. In 2009, RSVP had a formal relationship with several agencies and had an enrollment of 472 active volunteers.

Kristi Bird & Brittany Freeman, H.O.P.E. mentor and mentee

Helping Open doors by Preparing and Empowering young women Youth in foster care often have histories of severe trauma; parental abuse, parental alcohol or drug abuse, and lack supportive adult relationships. Two to four years after leaving foster care, less than 50% are employed, only 38% have maintained employment for at least one year, 25% will become incarcerated, 33% will receive welfare and 40% will be or have been pregnant. A growing body of knowledge indicates that foster youth have a stronger chance to become successful adults when support is coordinated across the community. In response to the need, Women & Philanthropy brought together representatives of six local youthserving providers. They have developed a coordinated network of hands-on services, matching each young woman with a mentor and providing tools that empower them to reach their educational, career, financial, relationship and health-related goals.

A dollar is not simply passed through to service programs – it is invested and grows. United Way secures grant funding every year for our agencies and programs, in-kind gifts from businesses around Lane County enhance the work, and most importantly, United Way builds relationships and provides avenues for people power – the most valuable resource in our community. We amplify charitable contributions with the strength of volunteerism, working as a community to strategically create positive change, now and for the future.

This booklet is made possible by the extraordinary generosity of QSL Print Communications.

Thank you QSL! “For years the United Way and its local partners have set the standard for capturing the spirit of this community, then focusing that spirit to achieve remarkable goals. With few exceptions, those goals have not only been reached, but surpassed! As a business owner, I commend your unflagging dedication. I find it inspiring and look forward to QSL’s continuing partnership with the United Way of Lane County.” - Doug Koke
