ABOUT - basic sustainability

I don’t see this planet being... they’re talking about how they’re turning around the environmental problems here, but I think it’s already too late. Ace Frehley

All we can hope for is that the thing is going to slowly and imperceptibly shift. All I can say is that 50 years ago there were no such thing as environmental policies. David Attenborough

MATRIAL POSSIBLES There are many materials suitable for sustainable packaing. Often times reusable material itself can be packaging. They don’t need to be over packaged once more.

Those different ways are by reduce, recyle, and reuse. Sustainble to me is reducing the waste.

RETAIL EXPERIENCES

During the selection period, I went straight to trash can area at ACCD. Most likely much waste was from cafeteria and printing lab all boxes, paper and plastic bag waste. How can I help to reduce the waste?? Trash is being made everyday at everywhere no matter what..

RETAIL EXPERIENCE I tried t to find shoes and watch stores around the mall. Place called Temptation were selling many mix of accessories and packaging was all in the plastic bag that had big name “Temptation on the bag. There was just too many stores that carried diverse shoes brands at the mall. Shoes were being displayed just normal table like piont of purchase level.

RETAIL EXPERIENCE Chili Beans were newly launched spanish brand selling all watches. Their watches were in the reusable zippered case but had no branding system or logo on the package.

Swatch simply packed the watch inside the paper bag without any other wrapping paper, box packaging nor reusable package to keep this watch in. Swatch is famous brand but the retail store appearance and packaging experience was disappointing.

RETAIL EXPERIENCE Only one brand “ALDO” had unique packaging with string on the box so that consumer can take this box with ease right after the purchase. But also this box is being thrown away after carring this box to home.

Just all same retail and packaging experience from store to stores...

RETAIL EXPERIENCE

Another thing I found out during research was that, items that keeps shoes clean and fresh like sox, cleaner, protector are in all different places that things might be lost after the use.

RETAIL EXPERIENCE It was hard to see overall look of shoes because it was diplayed too high up at stores that I couldn’t reach out with my height and even employees at the shop which was a big hassel.

RETAIL EXPERIENCE

USER RETAIL RESEARCH

Puma’s “the clever little bag” is well known for sustainable shoes packaging that saved 65% of paper compare to other original box packagings. It is easy to carry with having another extra reusable bag comes with it. Consumer can easily take the shoes packaging with them. In my case, shoes is like a trophy for collectors but this packaging can only carry one pair of shoes but he/she (collecting mania) can’t display the shoes at home. People who knows beauty of shoes buy many pairs of same designed shoes just because of color, design, functionality, limited edition within the brand. In that case, this packaging can carry shoes and reuse the red bag but why can’t we make a packaging that can carry but also display the shoes so make stronger reason to keep the package and also make retail employees with more ease or sonsumers to make collecting experience D.I.Y. also like the trend.

LCA RESEARCHES That collecting package system can be a rack that not only displays shoes but also can be stacked with each other that creates system within the brand and makes collectors be real collectors. It will be only reward that is experience for collectors can get and keep wanting to show off more like the trophy. And its the idea that only this one brand I chose can be turned into system that creates another level of package experience in sustainable way and enjoy being a collector. Collection of items can be represent itself as form of art or design like family line within product designs. Collectors have to make shoes visible and hide unnessacery areas to hide and only show areas of shoes they want to display.

Problem: 1. trahsed right away: plastic bag (no handle on the box) 2. trahsed right away: box (thrown away after taking shoes out at home) 3. oversized box (compare to size of shoes inside) 4. diff shoes, color when opened

3D MODELING - mockup

I will explore and create possible choices of experience for either displaying on wall or ways or stacking on floor aginst the wall. But also show brand equity in or outside of box that anyone can tell that someone is collector of “so and so brand’s shoes” just by identifying the package system.
