Welcome to Unique Cottage Farm Studios! ‘Unique’ is an Arts and Crafts facility on the outskirts of the historic market town of Spalding. Located conveniently just off the Spalding bypass, the Studios are set in traditional farm buildings which have been converted to offer an attractive, functional space with excellent facilities and ample free parking. The facilities are used by renting out individual studios and running courses in a range of disciplines from sketching to papermaking and from mosaics to sculpture! We run weekly Pottery lessons on Tuesday mornings and evenings. We also sell clay and provide a firing service, ask us about our art and craft parties for small groups of adults or children too. Call us to go on our mailing list. Artists in residence are Carolyn Goodwin, potter Hilary Peach together with stained glass artists Gillian and David Wing of Strawberry Glass.

STRAWBERRY GLASS Learn the art of stained glass. Strawberry Glass is a stained glass studio specialising in domestic commissions and running workshops. We design and make panels for the house and garden, all shapes and sizes of mirrors and a variety of suncatchers. A wide range of specialist glass in vibrant colours and varied textures is available. Our workshops and individual tuition cover the traditional construction methods of leadwork and copperfoil and cater for beginners and improvers. The groups are small to ensure the individual attention you need with projects ranging from suncatchers through Tiffany style lampshades to larger individual projects. We also provide evening workshops for special interest groups/societies that would like a stained glass activity on their programme. Sheep Day! – A Celebration of Wool and Its Uses Saturday 22 May 10am to 4pm Come down to the farm and celebrate Sheep! There will be several breeds of sheep on show spinners, weavers, a group that will be showing felting techniques and a textile artist who will demonstrate dyeing too. Activities on offer will be knitting and weaving activities for families and make your own Stained Glass sheep with Strawberry Glass artists Gillian and David Wing. Refreshments available – bring the family.

Pottery Classes Tuesdays 10am to 12noon & 7pm to 9pm - £10 per week or book 5 sessions and pay only £45 A relaxed and informative class where you will learn the basics of pottery and progress onto a number of creative projects in clay. Suitable for all abilities, beginners welcome.

Term dates: Summer term ends 3 August (daytime) 10 august (evening). Autumn term starts 7 September last session 14 December. Also – One to One Pottery Classes - £14 an hour, days by arrangement

Introduction to Stained Glass - Copper Foiling Saturday 5 June - Sessions 10.30am to 12.30pm or 2 - 4pm - £20 per session Make your own sun-catcher using the copper foiling method of construction with Gillian and David Wing of Strawberry Glass. Select from pre-cut glass, all tools and materials provided and no experience necessary.

Advance in Oils with Mo Teeuw Tuesday 8 June 10am to 4pm - £40 Develop your technique in oil paint with guidance and encouragement from local artist Mo. Perfect for those that have got to a stage with their painting where inspiration is needed! Please bring a canvas, oils and brushes.

Country Living Bring & Buy Sale in aid of rural charities & St Barnabas Hospice Saturday 12 June 12noon – FREE ENTRY! Unique is joining in with Britain’s biggest bring and buy sale! Please bring along your unwanted art & craft materials, clothes, toys, books and bric-a-brac and in return you’ll be able to buy what others have donated. Refreshments will be served by St Barnabas Hospice volunteers. Please bring friends and family along.

Unique Textile Group Thursday 17 June, 15 July, 19 August, 16 September, 21 October, 18 November & 16 December at 9.30am to 12.30pm - £5 a session Come along on the third Thursday of the month to share ideas, chat and work on a variety of your own textile projects.

Furniture Painting Techniques with Sue Purdy Saturday 10 July 10am to 4pm - £45 Learn how to paint your own furniture and create a distressed waxed finish. The workshop fee includes a small piece of furniture to paint on the day – you may bring your own please contact us to check.

Water Taxi Painting Day Wednesday 14 July 10am to 4pm - £30 A great opportunity to have a morning cruising on a privately chartered Spalding Water Taxi. We will have exclusive use of the boat all morning and then in the afternoon have time in the studio to work up drawings with guidance from Charles Harrison and Carolyn Goodwin. Bring a packed lunch and sketching materials.

Stained Glass Fruit and Veg! Friday 23 July, Saturday 31 July & Tuesday 10 August sessions at 10am and 2pm - £30 for half day A first go at the skills of cutting and copper foiling your own colourful stained glass sun catcher. Fruit and vegetable designs available to chose from and all tools and materials provided.

George Adams butchers will be providing food during the days including products from their Lincolnshire food range. Locally sourced food & drinks including Belvoir Farm fruit juices and Dennett’s Ice Cream will be on sale with thanks to Spalding Farm Shop while you’re here!

Alan Oliver’s Pastel Day Thursday 5 August 10am to 4pm - £45 A great opportunity to spend the day drawing in pastels with Rutland based artist Alan Oliver. You can draw from life in the beautiful surroundings of Unique Cottage Studios using landscape or still life as your inspiration and get advice and guidance from this experienced and renowned tutor.

Raku Glazing & Firing with Roz Fridholm Saturday 7 & 14 August 10am to 1pm - £40 Come to these two morning sessions and get a step by step guide on Raku glazing and firing. Explore the art of Raku a firing method developed in Japan in the 16th century. There is the opportunity to make your item for firing at one of our Thursday Pottery sessions before this course, please contact us for more information.

Fun with Felt and Fabrics – Lorraine Appleton Saturday 14 August 10am to 4pm - £35 Join Lorraine Appleton, inspirational textiles artist on this experimental day. You will be working with white felt, fabrics and threads. You will use shibori and fabric manipulation techniques before finally dyeing the fabric.

Willow Weaving - Art in the Garden with Alison Walling Thursday 9 September 10am to 4pm - £55 Design and create beautiful willow plant supports, spheres and birds for your garden. Suitable for beginners, tools and materials supplied.

Coiled Textiles Vessels with Lorraine Appleton Saturday 11 September 10am to 4pm - £30 Learn how this thrift craft can be made into vessels, hangings or accessories with inspirational textiles tutor Lorraine.

Art on the Map - Open Weekend Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 September 10am to 4pm – FREE ENTRY View new work by resident artists Carolyn Goodwin, Gillian and David Wing and see a display of the students work from previous classes and workshops. Gift items and artwork will be on sale.

Abstract Stained Glass – Copper foiling workshop Wednesday 15 September 10.30am to 12.30pm - £20 Create a unique abstract design in stained glass. Learn the techniques of copper foiling and soldering and then polish for display at home. All tools and materials are provided and no experience is necessary.

Mosaics with Fiona Gurney Saturday 18 September 10am to 4pm - £45 A wonderful opportunity to create something completely individual for your home or garden with local mosaic artist Fiona. Ideal for beginners and those with some experience.

Tapestry Weaving Workshop with Sarah Pink Wednesday 22 September 10am to 4pm - £45 Learn how to use a range of different tapestry weaving techniques with Sarah Pink. You will set up your own frame loom and create designs that explore surface pattern, colour and texture. A variety of yarns will be available to use and you can keep the tapestry frame loom along with the work that you create during the day.

Clay Sculpture Evening Class Thursday 23 & 30 September, 7 & 14 October 7pm to 9.30pm - 4 weeks £60 Come to these evening sessions and sculpt from Life in clay. Jonty Meyer is a very experienced sculptor and has been teaching for many years. His relaxed teaching style will encourage you to have confidence using clay.

Japanese Woodblock with Peter Dobson Saturday 25 September 10am to 4pm - £55 An introduction to one of the oldest printmaking methods. You will be shown how to carve an image onto a woodblock using specialist tools to create a multitude of marks. Using a watercolour wash you will then overprint your design in a single colour using hand burnishing to produce unique and authentic woodblock prints with experienced tutor Peter Dobson.

Traditional Rib or Frame Basket Workshop with Alison Walling Wednesday 29 September 10am to 4pm - £55 Learn to make a small round basket with a handle suitable for storing eggs or fruit. This technique was traditionally used by agricultural workers and can be made from a variety of hedgerow materials as well as prepared willow. Once you have learnt the process you will be able to experiment at home, trying different shapes and materials. Suitable for beginners, tools and materials supplied.

Painted Tinware with Sue Purdy Saturday 2 October 10am to 4pm - £40 to include tinware item. Join artist Sue Purdy as she teaches you the technique of painting tinware with beautiful designs in this practical workshop. Chose from a French bassine, bucket or watering-can to decorate and take it home at the end of the day!

Handmade Books with Handmade Paper - Jonathan Korejko Wednesday 6 October 10am to 4pm - £45 Jonathan will teach you how to make your own handmade paper with natural materials and flowers from the garden. You will then make your own simple book which can be used for writing, drawing, scrapbooking, or to give a friend as a gift.

Fill Your Sketchbook with Stephen Martyn Friday 8 October 10am to 4pm - £40 A day workshop designed to explore the popular medium of pen and wash. Suitable for artists of all abilities, including beginners. Weather permitting there will be a little outdoor work sketching and then developing your work in the studio.

Mosaic Project Day with Fiona Gurney Saturday 9 October 9am for a 9.30am start until 6pm - £65 An opportunity to have a go at a large mosaic project. Perfect for those with some experience, this workshop would make a great ‘next step’ in Mosaics. So whether it’s a patio table or a three dimensional piece Fiona will guide you through your chosen project. Breaks for lunch and tea. Option to complete the project at Fiona’s studio on agreed later dates.

Layered Letters - Calligraphy & Collage with Mick Paine Saturday 16 October 10am to 4pm - £40 Combining lettering with collage you will learn calligraphy technique and more from award winning calligraphy artist Mick. The collages will incorporate lettering within and upon them and you will experiment with a variety of inks, paints and other media to build up visually interesting and many layered pieces. No experience of calligraphy is necessary.

Big Brush Watercolours with Stephen Martyn Friday 5 November 10am to 4pm - £40 Spend a day at Unique Cottage Studios working fast and loose on landscaped subjects. Suitable for any artist who has a modest ability. There will be plenty of demonstrations by Steve as well as one-to-one help and advice appropriate to the individual.

Delectable Dyeing & Textile Printing with Angela Daymond Saturday 6 November 10am to 4pm - £45 Explore mono-printing and painting with dyes on textiles in this exciting one day workshop. Angela Daymond is an extremely experienced tutor and will guide you through some interesting techniques to achieve stunning results.

Card Printing with Louise Stebbing Monday 8 November 10am to 4pm - £45 Don’t miss this great opportunity to design & print your own cards using a variety of simple printmaking techniques. Louise will show you how to use linocuts, drypoints or collagraphs to make beautiful unique cards for the festive period or general use.

Devoré Scarves with Lorraine Appleton Saturday 20 November 10am to 4pm - £45 After last’s year’s successful workshop Lorraine returns again to teach the process of ‘etching’ on velvet and dyeing silk to achieve impressive results. You will produce two scarves in the day, ideal for Christmas presents!

Cathedral Window Christmas Decorations with Helen Porter Wednesday 24 November 10am to 4pm - £30 Learn the technique for folded textile patchwork to produce this unusual effect. You will be making an attractive seasonal hanging decoration, which will be hand pieced. During the day you will also be looking at other options and variations for this technique.

Willow Christmas Decorations with Alison Walling Saturday 27 November 10am to 4pm - £50 Make beautiful willow heart wreaths from a variety of coloured willows and birch, and learn techniques to make stars and circular wreaths to decorate with seasonal greenery and colourful winter berries. Tools and materials supplied - bring your own greenery to decorate, if you have some.

Stained Glass Christmas Decorations Sunday 28 November 10.30am to 12.30pm & 2pm to 4pm - £20 per session Create your own festive decoration for your Christmas tree or window. Select from pre-cut glass and learn to copper foil, solder and polish ready for display. All tools and materials provided and no experience is necessary.

We are situated near the Fulney roundabout junction on the A16 Spalding Bypass. Leave the bypass for the signs showing B1165 direction Weston Hills and Wisbech and some 50 metres on take your first turn to the left. Continue bearing left at sharp left hand bend and then continue straight on to Fulney Lane South (there is a blue sign at the entrance to this road which says 'unsuitable for HGV's') The Studios are situated in the third set of buildings on your left and will be signposted.

We are open Tuesdays to Fridays 10am to 4pm and selected Saturdays. What we do! As well as running the courses in this leaflet we also sell clay, bisque-ware and glazes. Our supplier is Potclays of Stoke-on-Trent and we provide a firing service. Looking for a party or group activity with a difference? We can arrange art and craft activities for groups from pottery painting to stained glass. Small groups can have a go on our potter’s wheel. We can also arrange specialist INSET art days in a number of disciplines for teachers and our large studio is available to hire on an hourly basis subject to availability. We accept cash, cheques (made payable to Unique Cottage Farm Studios) or bank transfers but not credit cards. For all our full day workshops coffee and tea are included and you can bring a packed lunch or pay £5 and we will provide a light lunch. Unless otherwise indicated our workshops are suitable for those 16 years and over.
