JULY UPDATES FROM THE SOUTH HILLS FRIENDS OF THE MONTOUR TRAIL The next two meetings of the South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail will be held on July 11 and August 8, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the South Park Township Library, 2675 Brownsville Road, South Park. The South Hills Friends are responsible for maintenance of the Montour Trail between Library and Clairton. Individuals interested in the Montour Trail are encouraged to attend. Additionally, the South Hills Friends of the Montour Trail monthly work parties are held on the first Saturday of each month, meeting at the South Park waste water treatment plant (trail MP 37.8, Piney Fork Road) at 9:30 a.m. The July work party will be held on July 1 and the August work party will take place on August 5. Additional information concerning the trail, including South Hills Friends contact information, may be obtained on the Montour Trail web site www.montourtrail.org. Questions may be directed to info@montourtrail.org. Individuals interested in volunteering may contact info@montourtrail.org for more information concerning the current month’s maintenance activities.

South Park Class of 1987 30th Year Reunion Planned for September 23rd South Park Class of 1987 is actively planning for their 30th year class reunion. The date has been set for Saturday, September 23, 2017. Plans are to have an informal, family welcome picnic. The location has been chosen as the Union Township Brownsville Road Park Recreation Center, Finleyville from 11 a.m. dusk. A Facebook page has been created as SP 1987 30-year reunion. Please like and join for further reunion planning details. We are asking to please spread the word to those from the SP class of 1987 who are not on Facebook. Summer Art Camp Is Ready To Go In Peters Township Art Encounters studio, located at In His Presence Church in Peters Township, is preparing two art camps this summer - one drawing camp and one clay camp. Children ages 6 and up will be able to improve their art skills. Just Drawing Camp: Students will be engaged in a variety of projects to sharpen their skills as budding young artists! Campers will be doing pencil shading, line drawing, colored pencils, and more for this class. Older students who want to learn more will be given that opportunity. Class will be from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. from July 17 - 22. Cost including materials is $50. Clay Camp: Campers will be experimenting with different types of clay. Kids will be creating and painting projects that they will be sure to keep for years to come. Camp will be from 2- 3:30 p.m. from July 17-22. Cost including materials is $65. Shorraw Invited to Address State Democratic Committee Matt Shorraw, the democratic nominee for mayor of the City of Monessen, Westmoreland County, was invited to speak at the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee’s Annual Keystone Dinner on Saturday June 9, 2017. Shorraw was the first Monessen representative to be invited to speak by the state party since the late Monessen Mayor Hugo Parente. Shorraw also attended GoverMatt Shorraw (right) and keynote speaker nor Wolf’s reception on Michael Blake (left) Friday evening. The Keystone Dinner featured speeches from Shorraw as well as State Representative Patty Kim (103rd District), State Senator Vincent Hughes (7th District), and the keynote speaker, Michael Blake, who serves as the Democratic National Committee Vice Chair. The State Democratic Committee acknowledged Shorraw for his primary election win, as well as his community service to the City of Monessen. The mayoral nominee was also recognized for his efforts to mobilize youth and young adults to be more active in their Matt Shorraw ªright) and PA. Governor Wolf communities.

South Hills High School Plans 50th Class Reunion for September 23rd The South Hills High School Class of 1967 will hold its 50th reunion on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the beautiful Chartiers Country Club, 601 Baldwin Road, Pittsburgh. Beginning at 6 p.m., classmates can valet park and enjoy a social hour with hors d’oeuvres and drinks from the cash bar on the patio overlooking the golf course. At 7 p.m., we will begin seating for dinner in the ballroom. After a buffet dinner featuring broiled salmon, carved baked ham, chicken picatta, and beef tips burgundy, we will be entertained by our DJ - Brookline’s own Tony Guarino – for a wonderful evening of dancing and memories until we depart at 11 p.m. Tickets are $80 per person. No tickets will be available after August 23, 2017. No tickets will be available at the door.
