Our research programmes include Masters by Research, MPhil, PhD, a top-up Doctorate in Psychotherapy (DPsych), a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) and a Doctorate in Medicine (MD).


Human and Environmental Sciences A diverse range of topics are offered and managed through themed research groups headed by subject specific research lead. The research is innovative and applied, using integrated approaches in different disciplines, creating a dynamic culture and environment extending the reach nationally and internationally through impact, exploitation and dissemination. Pharmacy Research in Pharmacy is conducted within the Centre for Topical Drug Delivery and Toxicology, the Centre for Clinical Practice, Safe Medicines and Drug Misuse or in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and integrates science and practice in Pharmacy and Pharmacology, providing relevant, innovative and progressive research which presents real value to the national and international pharmaceutical and healthcare communities. Research areas: The research is focused strategically on the key niche areas of: • Clinical Psychopharmacology/ Substance Misuse • Patient Safety and Medicines Management • Pharmaceutical Chemistry • Topical and Transdermal Drug Delivery • Pharmaceutical and Chemical Toxicology

Postgraduate Medicine The degree offers clinicians an opportunity to undertake a substantial programme of clinical or laboratory based research in a wide range of subject areas relevant to their own clinical practice. The programme also offers maximum flexibility and is further enhanced by the opportunity for candidates to contribute to the final award using previous research. Entry requirements PhD/MPhil/MSc by Research: first or upper second class honours degree in the relevant subject area.

Top-up Doctorate in Psychotherapy: a significant original contribution to professional practice in Psychotherapy.

Doctorate in Medicine: MBBS or equivalent; eligibility for registration with the General Medical Council; three years equivalent professional practice experience; be in employment or have arranged employment for the period of research.

Expected Time Periods from Enrolment to Submission

Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology: first or upper second class honours degree in Psychology; acceptable to the NHS as a trainee Clinical Psychologist in an employed status; show evidence of practical or research experience of at least a year in a field relevant to Clinical Psychology. Top-up Doctorate in Psychotherapy: postgraduate qualification in psychotherapy conferring eligibility for registration as a Psychotherapist; at least two years relevant experience; be working in, or have access to, a professional setting in which a programme of work can be carried out. Criteria for Degree Awards All candidates must successfully complete a substantial programme of individual or practice-based research and in addition demonstrate: PhD: a significant original contribution to knowledge or to professional practice in the discipline. MPhil: the ability to use research outcomes to guide the development of the research programme. MSc by research: the exercise of independent critical powers. Doctorate in Medicine: a significant original contribution to clinical practice. Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology: an independent and original contribution to Clinical Psychology and successful completion of the academic and professional taught courses.
