SHELLEY FERGUSON

NICOLA MANNING

JANICE KUMAR-WARD

Shelley Ferguson is an interior designer, TV presenter, nature lover, wife and mum who enjoyed a 20-year career in the home magazine industry before starting her own interior design business. Throughout her career she’s had an unwavering passion for interior design, architecture and real estate, leading to eight seasons hosting The Block renovation reality show and local TV series Slice of Paradise. Shelley lives in Auckland with her husband Steven and their two boys Flynn and Jett.

Nicola Manning established Nicola Manning Design in September 2002. She specialises in residential interior design, particularly large-scale renovation and new house builds, offering a full interior design service including kitchen and bathroom design. A multi award-winning designer, Nicola has received many accolades over the years from the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards and other national awards programmes. Having completed an Associate Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration from Rhodec International, a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration and a specialist NKBA Kitchen Course, Nicola Manning has a wealth of experience and industry knowledge. Nicola is a Professional Member of the Designers Institute of New Zealand (PDINZ), a Member and Board Member of the NKBA and the Designers of NKBA Chairperson.

Even as a teenager, curtains, blinds and fabrics were central to Janice Kumar-Ward’s world. As a creative 15-year-old, while others pumped gas or took on babysitting to earn a crust on weekends, she immersed herself in the retail showroom at Harvey Furnishings. She was in her happy place but never considered it could be a serious career. That all changed later on in high school when Janice met … an Actual Interior Designer, Timmy Penfold. The encounter was a revelation and put her on course to study interior architecture, first in Sydney and later a Bachelor of Design at Unitec in Auckland. The learning didn’t stop there. Once qualified, Janice approached Martin Hughes Architecture and Interiors – and her true education began. Designers such as John Hughes, Stewart Harris, Sue Holmes, Ray Lind, Clark Pritchard, and ultimately Paul Macintosh became her mentors and her friends. It seems only reasonable that Janice should marry a cabinet-maker. After having their first child, Janice and Julian launched The Recipe Ltd (later rebranded as Mr and Mrs Ward), a side hustle that focussed on ready-made furniture. In 2015, the couple and two friends purchased and then renovated a modernist concrete building in Saint Benedicts Street, Newton. This project became the catalyst and launching pad for JKW Interior Architecture and Design. This small studio team is handson and approachable, and takes a distinctly Antipodean approach. The results are tailored and exciting.

SUPREME KITCHEN DESIGN

DESIGNER: DAVINIA SUTTON DETAIL BY DAVINIA SUTTON This Supreme Award-winning kitchen design is bold with a modern wow factor. Placed front and centre, the design’s focal point is an incredible Patagonia granite that has been enhanced by back lighting detail. The concept of the kitchen design was formed around the idea of a front and rear kitchen. The front zone serves the day-to-day needs of the family, while the rear kitchen provides overflow with a working pantry zone, additional storage, prepping station and integrated appliances. On the back side of the pantry space is a hidden bar, with custom sink, wine fridge and glassware storage. By providing three standalone, yet integrated working zones, several people can utilise the space at one time.

6

A stunning monochromatic palette was selected by Davinia Sutton for the main body of the joinery to accentuate the strong architectural form. Two-toned dark stained textured veneer adjacent box ‘walls’ are blended within the warmth of a contrasting whitewashed veneer to enhance the sense of hierarchy for the front and rear zones. To break the solidness of the back wall area, a liquid metal framed negative element was introduced, providing a sense of layer and interest. Through a strong functional layout, clever detailing and mix of materials, Davinia has created a kitchen with maximum impact and one that is perfectly designed for the needs of a busy family and the hosting of large social gatherings.

JUDGES' COMMENTS This kitchen gives you butterflies. It has astounding beauty and detailing that grabs you and holds you close. The stunning slab selection is backlit which adds to the drama and understated glamour. The mixing of timbers is a great success, and the detailing and materiality is a showstopper. The scullery is just as interesting, with beautiful lighting and a tiered almost chandelier like quality. The designer has incorporated a slight Japanese influence that creates luxury and evokes deep emotion. Masculine materials have been used, but carefully layered, to create an elegant and sleek design. This kitchen has wow factor and is of international quality.

SUPREME BATHROOM DESIGN

DESIGNER: DETAIL BY DAVINIA SUTTON A beautiful bathroom with a sense of modern Hamptons luxury and style, the space features bespoke elements, luxurious finishes and refined bathroom fittings and fixtures. The freestanding, deep, charcoal, mineral stone bath, which is placed centre stage on entry in front of the shutter clad windows, creates a sense of sophisticated style and accentuates the room’s unique, luxurious aesthetic. The feature bath is complemented by the overall palette of the room which utilises a natural honed travertine tile. Oversized blocks, sourced from the same quarry as the tiles, have been hand crafted

into a skirting tile and dado capping, to allude to a sense of opulence and elegance. To further enhance this tiling detail, a bespoke lime-based plaster system was applied above the tile dado line to create a soft texture and sense of character to the room. A careful play on form and finish is demonstrated in the dramatic vanity, which is clad in a mid-stained, American white oak laminated solid timber and adorned with a custom-formed stone top and bowl, rebated behind the timber façade. This bathroom has a distinctive sense of luxury and refinement, which the homeowners love.

DESIGNER: LEONIE HAMILL & MELANIE SA'U CUBE DENTRO Located in a substantial villa in Greenlane, Auckland, this immaculate space needed to incorporate a new kitchen, scullery and wine cellar. A pared-back design, but with a distinct identity was required along with a robust form to take knocks from a young child and pooch. Equal to a beautiful design was functionality and a timeless aesthetic. A sense of balance and calm was achieved by Leonie Hamill and Melanie Sa’u through the selection of a limited colour palette of dark American oak cabinetry, contrasted with white granite and pops of brass for sophistication. Beautiful symmetry has unfolded through the placement of an island in the

centre of the room. The white countertop splices through the middle and creates a striking checkerboard effect with the rear wall cabinetry and splashback. The hero piece is an incorporated cantilever dining table supported by stunning customised brass legs. There is a clever hint of vintage, influenced by the villa’s era. The built-in range-hood is also a talking point with its chunky brass encasement. Design complexity continues in the wine cellar with its unique shelving and warm strip lighting, along with finger tiles in the scullery for character, and open shelving in the bar area to display glassware and treasures.

KITCHEN DISTINCTION AWARD

$80$100k DESIGNER: NATALIE DU BOIS DU BOIS DESIGNER KITCHENS & INTERIORS

JUDGES' COMMENTS There is a wonderful lightness and calmness and use of texture that is very special in this kitchen. Visually impressive, the selection of materials are soft and organic looking with a natural feel. The lighting is beautiful and the soft curves of the stone mason work is exceptional. This isn’t a large kitchen, but there are a lot of wonderous moments that make it rise above. It doesn’t feel cluttered, it is very serene, an incredible transformation from its previous life. Visually, this kitchen absolutely wowed and thrilled the judging panel.

$60$80K DESIGNER: DETAIL BY DAVINIA SUTTON A large open-plan working kitchen for a busy family of four, this unique kitchen design incorporates a hob and prep zone on the island, with a seating area for the family to gather. The kitchen space is set out in a galley format with the island featuring a distinctive form incorporating a naturally textured Grey Moonstone with a solid mitred waterfall detail. The kitchen is located at the end of a large open-plan living area and so the design has an interesting and unique presence. Detail by Davinia Sutton wanted to reflect the forms and layers seen in the home’s architecture, so it was imperative to utilise complementary materials, colours and textures within the design. The internal back wall of the kitchen is contrasted with a soft grey, matte lacquer finish mixed with a textured midstained American white oak veneer in a crown cut finish, to enrich a sense of sophistication and style. The interesting mix of materials and form establishes an attractive and curious sculptural presence to the kitchen design.

JUDGES' COMMENTS A beautifully elegant kitchen where the negative detail adds a cool factor along with the interesting pop-out detail exhibited around the fridge and ovens. The colour of the cabinet was an excellent choice when teamed with the soft stone palette. A very delicate and refined visual, that as a whole is clever and sophisticated. The vertical lines are pleasing.

$40$60K DESIGNER: NICKY CLARIDGE NC DESIGN This exquisite new home perched high on the Bridle Path Road in Heathcote has stunning views of the sea and city vista below and is the owner’s self-confessed architectural indulgence. The kitchen needed to be bold enough to blend with the masculine feel of the dark timber ceilings and exposed structural steel elements of the space, but not so tough as to overshadow them. The clients wanted a totally unique, tasteful space to cook up a storm in and entertain their friends and family and liked the idea of a ‘bar/restaurant’ type setting. To achieve this look, Nicky Claridge included glossy black ‘bevelled edge’ subway tiles, a 12mm plate steel benchtop for the cooking and pantry surfaces, and a custom-built exposed stainless steel extractor unit. The timber and glass display unit has sliding doors hung from a steel running track and provides space for glassware and ornamental objects. The centre island is completely suspended off the floor with a custom made matte-black steel frame with ends that mirror the large exposed structural steel frame which divides the living room from the kitchen and dining area. Strategically placed LED lights were used to illuminate the space on duller days, in the evening the lighting helps the kitchen come alive as an entertaining space.

JUDGES' COMMENTS This kitchen could happily find a home in a restaurant or bar, it has that perfect moody, commercial feel. Strong and industrial, the kitchen is in harmony with the architecture of the home and meets the brief. Almost cocoon like, the space feels like a bar at night with a distinctive and unique feel.

$25-$40k DESIGNER: MICHAEL MURRAY KITCHEN INSPIRATIONS Within our homes, many of us strive to perfect the art of balancing the old with the new. Bold and textural, this kitchen does this so effortlessly. With their lives spent collecting and curating vintage furniture, the homeowners wanted a space that was both contemporary yet works harmoniously with their sentimental treasures. With a generous ceiling height, the eye is immediately drawn to the earthy tones and textures within the space. The two geometric pendant lights make a dramatic statement in the open plan room. The brassy patina melamine battening on the range hood and around the island adds linear uniformity to the space. This is offset by the organic flowing veins in the natural granite benchtop. Just like most vintage pieces, the river stone reveals its true beauty when witnessed up close, its embedded red stones sparkle when met with natural light. All the stainless-steel appliances sit within carbon timberland finished cabinetry, making their presence unobtrusive to the flow of the space. The matte black handles are a discrete and minimal feature on the Blum soft-close drawers. The powder-coated shelving and stone stand situated above the cooktop, displays beloved trinkets. Not only an intriguing focal point when guests enter the kitchen, it also acts as a cherished nod to the past for the homeowners. The vintage and the new elevate and embrace each other in this striking setting.

JUDGES' COMMENTS A clever little kitchen that incorporates pleasant materials, simple forms and colour tones that we don’t see often. There is a lot of bang for your buck in this interesting and forward-thinking space. It has a great workflow and a chic vibe. The granite shelf detailing is a wonderful addition, and it is nice to see a pair of lights, rather than the typical set of three. A textural, natural kitchen.

Natalie Du Bois replaced the old, dark, U-shaped bach kitchen with a user-friendly galley island configuration that celebrates and embraces the beautiful sea views. For the mid-century look, Natalie introduced several design elements, such as the curves to the corners of the stone-clad island and the textured, bead-blasted wood grain cabinetry, which ties in with other timber completehome.com.au

elements throughout the bach. The slim black strip light above the island has an LED along its length and random cap details; the almost bird-wing shape echoes the beachy feel of this coastal home. The result is an easy-to-work-in, beautifully designed holiday-home kitchen that oozes that wonderful feeling of relaxation and good times.

CREATIVE EXCELLENCE BATHROOM DESIGN

DESIGNER: KATIE SCOTT STICKS+STONES DESIGN The brief from the homeowner was for a space that was grand and classic with contemporary features and luxurious, timeless and bold elements. A grey, moody palette makes the room feel open and spacious. A wet room with a lowered floor to allow for a level entry shower and bath area was utilised along with a contemporary take on an old-style tub made from charcoal coloured concrete. Balancing the strong look of the solid concrete bath, the tiles were kept lighter with two different wall tiles with a Dado line of brass trim

to add an enduring look to the room. Large format, luxurious marble-look tiles extend to the high stud giving a sense of space and height. The curved mirror with brass frame along with the curved brass tap ware, basins and bath add a softness to the strong features also adding a traditional touch. To finish, bell shaped feature wall lights hang either side of bath in smoky grey glass. These frame the back wall and provide a welcoming view from the hall.

SPATIAL INNOVATION DESIGN: RESIDENTIAL

WINNER

DESIGNER: BROOKE CHOLMONDELEY-SMITH TAWA ARCHITECTURE In this artful project, Brooke CholmondeleySmith has designed a multi-functional office/ retreat space that is elegant yet functional. Due to the owner’s UK military background, the overall look and feel of the space captures the quality, stately and timelessness of a traditional Officer’s Mess with a modern touch. To align with the historic traditions and formal military aesthetic, materials were chosen for their presence, weight and permanence. The tones of the kitchen stone were balanced with rich oakwood finishes and bronze hardware to provide warmth and to match the custom-coloured flooring. The material palette was refined to provide a strong textural, but natural aesthetic, that balanced with the surrounding exterior views.

The large open plan room (50sqm) is situated on the third level and functions as both a private retreat as well as a professional full-time working office. To spatially separate and organise each zone, Brooke had to carefully consider and balance the personal and private areas which needed to include a kitchenette, custom built-in cabinetry for the owner’s extensive library and artwork collection, desk space for two people and a relaxation and media space along with extensive storage and display. To ensure the different zones flowed without it feeling cluttered, Brooke had to carefully consider the circulation and movement patterns of each area, particularly around the large custom desk and the seating area.

RUNNER UP: KITINI This exterior kitchen design is all about celebrating the environment that the homeowner entertains in and embracing the landscape that surrounds their architecturally designed home. The art of outdoor cooking is much more than just coals, grill and a gas burner. The design needed to deliver a functional, uncluttered kitchen that stayed true to the boldness of the modern architecture and seascape views beyond. The kitchen is located on an exterior deck incorporating a dining zone and separate fire space. Taking advantage of this spatial placement, the kitchen design is set out in a galley format. The back wall includes plenty of bench space and an ideal area for food prep, including a sink and drainer tray formed from marine grade stainless steel, a hidden

rubbish bin system, and a cleaning zone. A fully integrated fridge is located at the end of the prep zone for easy access. This kitchen is built to last. Robust materials have been selected to endure the lashings of the New Zealand environment. Aesthetically, it celebrates natural, architectural and culinary cues.

JUDGE’S COMMENTS A very smart, experimental, take on an outdoor kitchen. It is wonderful to see a considered outdoor kitchen space that also looks great. It is an ingenious concept to have the BBQ in the middle of the outdoor kitchen facing out towards the guests. It means the cook can entertain and be a part of the outdoor revelry. The finishes and attention to detail are to a very high standard.

SPATIAL INNOVATION DESIGN: COMMERCIAL

DESIGNER: ANGELIQUE ARMSTRONG ARMSTRONG INTERIORS Located in an appliance showroom in Christchurch, this display kitchen was designed for Neff appliances. The Neff ‘Market’ kitchen is a unique look, Neff have used around the world. Armstrong Interiors were given a brief to keep within the Neff brand's look and feel, but to enhance this style even further. One of the main attractions, and requests within the brief was to have a large island. The kitchen’s position was at the front of the showroom, clearly visible from the street through the full glass frontage.

Bringing the rustic market feel to another level, creating something unique, Angelique sourced 150-year-old reclaimed French oak beams, that were simply wire-brushed and waxed, to keep them raw and rustic looking. These were used as posts at each corner of the island, cutting into the Neolith top, exposing the core of the timber on the top. They were also used to frame the back wall of units to look as if they are supporting the brick wall. Boras Tapeter original brick wallpaper was used to complete the market feel.

This isn’t a large kitchen, but there are a lot of wonderous moments that make it rise above. It doesn’t feel cluttered, it is very serene, an incredible transformation from its previous life. Visually, this kitchen absolutely wowed and thrilled the judging panel.

RUNNER UP: ARMSTRONG INTERIORS The ‘Clarkville Kitchen’ Project, situated on a ten-acre lifestyle block in North Canterbury, is a full house renovation including kitchen, scullery, laundry, bathrooms and full interiors. The clients wanted a modern and functional kitchen, that was elegant yet lent itself to a homestead, country feel with a slight French influence. With the clients both being in the health profession, they wanted clean surfaces and colours, but also wanted to try and stay away from the colour white. Trendstone Lilly White was selected by Angelique Armstrong as the perfect colour match for the rest of the interiors and for a desirable simple, clean finish. The joinery ties in beautifully with the reclaimed French timber flooring that was used throughout the home. An oak timber veneer cabinetry, in a shaker-style door profile was featured. Brushed nickel handles and tapware were specified, and schist was a feature used both internally and externally.

Individually handblown glass Søktas lights were specified for their elegant, organic detail over the island. The kitchen includes a separate plumbed-in coffee machine and entertainment area in the scullery. The glass front units are lit-up to display the client’s favourite crockery. The kitchen and scullery lead out to the dining courtyard which creates a lovely indoor/outdoor flow.

JUDGE’S COMMENTS A beautiful transformation with gorgeous finishes. This kitchen is completely sympathetic of the architecture of the home and is so well considered. The design of the kitchen brings the outside in, which is always well received. The renovation includes the addition of a large workhorse scullery that uplifts and improves the lifestyle of the homeowners. A generous and warm space.

FIRST TIME ENTRANT

DESIGNER: KATE GARDHAM KITCHEN VISION This forward-thinking design by Kate Gardham, a first-time entrant into the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards, delivers a “jack and jill” style ensuite with twin sinks and double showerheads. To improve natural light, a skylight was added above the shower, it also helped to achieve a space that felt extremely tall, fresh and open. The simplicity of the subtle curves in the cabinetry and benchtop have a lovely flow on effect and cohesion with the rest of the

home. Japanese finger tiles, brushed brass accents, steel and black oiled American oak in crown cut were purposely specified in dark tones to complement and pop against the honed super white granite. Blum storage solutions in the bathroom drawers were utilised to keep the vanity well organised and a Hafele trio docking station was added for both practicality and to create design aesthetic inside the drawer for charging phones, toothbrushes and hairdryers.

VISUAL IMPACT

DESIGNER: KATIE SCOTT STICKS+STONES DESIGN Being daring with texture, Katie Scott selected small, handmade, vertical subway tiles in a dark smoky grey paired with contrasting white and black statuario marble look large format tiles in this stylish ensuite. Adding delicate details of aged brass tapware, brass inlay in the vanity doors, shower channels and hardware, all colour matched in aged brass, gives the

moody space a classic feel and warmth. The mirrors are high to exaggerate the height of the stud and the luxurious feel of the bathroom. Smoky glass bell shaped lights throw warm light over the black honed granite benchtops and black concrete basins. Extra LED lighting was added to emphasises the height of the room and to highlight surface textures and create mood.

RUNNER UP: STICKS+STONES DESIGN The homeowner’s brief was simple, they wanted a standout space, but one that was sympathetic to the Villa aesthetic. The design needed to nod to the classic villa style, while also offering something striking and different with a contemporary take on tradition. Katie Scott created a special kitchen that is not too dark and not white, using an unfamiliar colour palette and a perfect feature island. Blending two looks, Katie utilised simple panelled door fronts in a green/grey tone, custom vertical reeded Raven green panels, Mystique green marble and a blend of curves and lines. All visible hardware is in a gunmetal finish to tone in with the soft green, grey and purple hues of the island marble and cabinetry.

As the ceiling height varies in the kitchen area, Katie added bulkheads where needed to balance the space. She also took the cabinetry high to emphasise the grandeur of the villa’s high stud. Bench seating was added with additional storage to act as a window seat but also seating for a dining area when needed.

JUDGE’S COMMENTS: Fresh and different, this kitchen has a lovely, lofty feel due to the higher stud height. Texture has been created to perfection with the vertical fluting and vertical tiles. The soft grey/green tones complement the villa style of the home splendidly. The kitchen is a restful centrepiece to a traditional house.

BAY OF PLENTY KITCHEN

WAIKATO KITCHEN

TARANAKI KITCHEN

DESIGNER: MICHELLE MCANULTY BEAVER KITCHENS

DESIGNER: MARK BRUCE DESIGNMARKED KITCHENS

DESIGNER: ANNIKA ROWSON ROWSON KITCHENS

The existing small, unfriendly, family kitchen lacked functional storage and all major appliances conflicted with each other. It also failed to work well under the pressure of the family environment which included a new baby and toddler. There was also no line of sight to the children playing in the living areas of the home or the outdoor decks. The client wanted a “life changing” design that would mean the relocation of the kitchen to the opposite side of a large open living area. The new location of the kitchen would provide a space for a family friendly kitchen that was proportionate to the large family home. An increase of storage, better flow of traffic through the kitchen and connection to the outdoor living area was also achievable in this new space. A new island, with a sink, bin system and dish drawer would enable the client to face towards the living areas of the home, providing the ability to watch the children while attending to food preparation and/or clean-up. Introducing seating at the island would allow for highchairs and bar stools to be incorporated into the space. A clean, fresh, feminine palette with white, timber and villa blue was selected by Michelle McAnulty and a strong linear rhythm was created with the choice of tongue and groove Dezignatek Kawhia doors and panels.

This multi-layered home had a kitchen and scullery layout that set the scene for Mark Bruce to pull together something spectacular. Designmarked was commissioned to open the space up so the clients could enjoy the views and the family time, no matter what part of the kitchen they were in. By removing the scullery dividing wall and designing cabinetry that held a sliding splash back, the scullery and kitchen could be separate if required. To make both the rooms work, a fridge located between was required. The fridge was positioned at the entrance to the scullery which made it easily accessible to all. The spatial planning in the kitchen works well as the hob-fridge-sink relationship is accessible from both the scullery sink and the island sink. The architectural design of the house is magnificent with four mono-pitched layers dug deeply into a hill as it climbs up. There is a lot of exposed concrete and strong rectangle shapes in very dark natural finishes. Mark Bruce decided to replicate the masculinity of the architecture in the kitchen using negative detailing along with matte and textured finishes. Strong lines and an extensive use of black are incorporated also.

The brief for this project was to create a large and spacious kitchen that had ample bench space and storage. It also needed to be light, white and textured yet also timeless. In response to this, Annika Rowson allowed for the walls to be removed and for the kitchen space to be opened right up, with an extension to be completed to accommodate the dining table and lounge. The original kitchen was a very small g-shape, to replace it Annika designed an L-shape with an island, with two entry and exit points, to allow for greater flow. When the old gib ceilings were removed and the rafters exposed, Annika specified that they must stay to offer beautiful texture and that they should be painted white. The tall cabinetry in the space was v-grooved for texture and interest. The aluminium powder coated frame is a solid support to allow for the specification of a 12mm Corian which eliminated the need for visible joins on the generous bench areas. Timber flooring offers warmth to the white and a timeless aesthetic that is carried through to the floating shelves and buffet unit.

The designer has utilised a delicate use of colour and beautiful lighting to elevate this compact kitchen. Budget constraints have meant a clever use of materials were needed to achieve the desired outcome. The drawings and planning of the space are excellent with a professional package submitted by the designer.

An innovative sliding door that provides the homeowner with the ability to conceal a working area helps to create a flexible and functional kitchen and scullery. A stylish monochromatic palette is used here, along with a creative use of space. The negative detail throughout has been well considered.

A lovely space with an attractive beach bach aesthetic. A great renovation, where spatial planning has been well thought-out. This designer is a taste maker, who understands finishes and combining materials. There is an art to working with soft colours, especially character filled white which can be difficult, however this has been mastered in this space. The ceiling rafters are a sumptuous decorative feature that adds to the kitchen.

DESIGNER: PHOEBE CLINTON-BAKER WORKSHOP DESIGNS

DESIGNER: KAREN HARLEN BAYS JOINERY

The kitchen is located in an open-plan living space, which opens to an outdoor entertaining area. The galley-style kitchen was deemed the perfect fit for this open-plan space. An easy-care kitchen for a bach, it has an industrial style, with low maintenance in mind and durability for friends and family. The accented style of steel on the island, oven surround, rangehood and other details within the house pull the overall style together. Laminex Acrylic Pitch black was chosen as the main surface material to help the space marry with the rest of the home. Melteca oiled legno and bullet were then used in the interior of the kitchen to add a little texture. The minimalist look of handleless servo drive drawers on the lower, with shadow line handle along the top, gives the kitchen simplicity and great functionality. A more robust feature handle was specified to be used on the integrated appliances and pantry.

A traditional 1970’s kitchen has been transformed by designer Phoebe ClintonBaker to a harmonious modern play on a classic design. The client’s brief was simple, to remain true to the architect’s intent and style of the era and preserve the original wallpaper. A lot of time and research by Phoebe went into discovering the perfect products to align with the clients brief. In addition, the veneer was carefully chosen, and grain matched throughout the ‘U’ shaped cabinetry. The open shelves store eclectic treasures and were integral to the design, providing a cohesive link to a larger shelving unit in the living room. Crisp light floods the space through the original window that overlooks the garden. The warm LED lighting pops between each elevation to ooze natural warmth. Ample bench space was a must to allow space for multiple chefs and beautiful cooking creations.

This kitchen was part of an extensive renovation. An original fisherman’s cottage with lots of timber features, the kitchen had to blend with the timber details, but not dominate the space. Over the past 100 years ill thought-out additions to the cottage closed all areas in. The clients wanted to open the house up and make it feel light and airy with open plan living. The client had no vision of what the kitchen should look like. All she knew was that she loved a minimalistic style. Karen Harlen designed a seamless white “wall” with tall units, then framed it with American White Oak Veneer to echo the timber French doors to the garden. The framing was repeated around the hob area. A timber backdrop to the hob area, that was then wrapped around the island achieves a synergy between this area and the floor. Using Corian on the island allowed seamless transition from the benchtop to the Corian sinks.

JUDGES' COMMENTS JUDGES' COMMENTS The designer has selected an interesting choice of materials, particularly with the use of steel. The framing around the island is unique and makes the rangehood pop. The stone was an attractive choice. A striking kitchen.

The design of this kitchen complements the architecture of the home succinctly. Simple forms and materials have been used successfully in this carefully balanced space. The natural light from the skylights work really well and the use of timber ties in, and connects, with the existing space. A practical and lovely kitchen.
