GREEN PROGRESS The Lappeenranta University of Technology Green Campus is a research and education environment that builds sustainable energy solutions for the future. The Green Campus embodies the solution-focused, visionary thinking and operation of the university. The campus employs LUT’s own inventions and utilises the university’s multidisciplinary expertise. The Green Campus boasts solar panels and a wind turbine, a smart grid, and the university’s environmental management system. LUT is the only Finnish university having adopted an environmental management system certified in accordance with the ISO14001 standard as well as the WWF Green Office environmental management system. LUT is building the Green Campus into a test environment for the future energy system. In a unique research project, fuel is manufactured from carbon dioxide. The entire process is carried out in one place using solar power from LUT’s solar panels, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and rain water. These are the only raw materials needed to replace fossil oil. The LUT Green Campus won the Excellence in Campus category of the international Sustainable Campus Excellence Awards. The recognition is awarded for the concrete promotion of sustainable development and green technology. The Green Campus demonstrates how science can be applied to solving significant ecological problems and promoting well-being.

In today’s society, resources are becoming scarce and the environmental impact of manufacturing processes is a matter of growing concern. Chemical and process engineering addresses these challenges by designing processes that are efficient, sustainable and environmentally responsible. During your studies in this Master’s programme, you will learn to invent, design, develop and promote new technical solutions as a response to major global challenges. Your studies will be strongly industryoriented.

LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing your studies, you will obtain the scientific and technological knowledge for a career in chemical and process engineering in different fields of process industry. You will acquire the knowledge and skills to work most typically in research, development, and innovation in chemical companies and for equipment manufacturers and technology providers. LEARNING OUTCOMES

The United Nations recognised clean water and sanitation as a basic human right in 2010. Yet 40 % of the world’s population is affected by water scarcity, and 1.7 billion people live in areas where consumption exceeds discharge. The needs and discharge of industry and agriculture together with increasingly tightening legislation and political agendas add to the pressure of efficient water treatment. Novel and sustainable materials and technologies for water treatment are a necessity of life for us. In this Master's programme, you will learn how water is purified not only efficiently but also sustainably and economically.

After completing this programme, you will have acquired comprehensive knowledge in advanced water treatment. You will develop the competence to act as an expert and innovator in the rapidly developing field of water treatment where solving the problems of both wastewater treatment and the sufficient production of clean water are critical. You will build a comprehensive understanding of the Best Available Technology (BAT) and future water treatment solutions, covering advanced techniques of oxidation, ion exchange and adsorption.

CAREER PROSPECTS A chemical engineer’s career involves developing new industrial processes and designing new process plants or modifying existing ones. Approximately 75% of students graduating from chemical engineering programmes work in research, development, or management positions. You may find your place in the chemical and process industry, in a technology company focusing on water purification equipment or chemicals, in a water treatment plant, or in a research institute where you can develop new water treatment solutions, novel separation and purification materials or water quality monitoring methods. As the need for more advanced technology is obvious, the number of new companies in the field of water treatment is increasing rapidly – why not develop your own water treatment solution during your studies and start your own business.

ENERGY SYSTEMS

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The challenges of climate change and energy security call for new supplies of affordable sustainable energy. Making greater use of the available spectrum of varying renewable energy systems is a way to meet the climate change challenge while helping to secure the energy supply for us all. In this Master’s programme, you will learn how to produce energy safely, economically, and by using low-emission technology and renewable energy sources. You can specialise in one of two energy production related areas: BioEnergy Systems or Nuclear Engineering.

In this programme, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge of sustainable energy systems and specific knowledge and competencies of bio-energy technology and nuclear engineering. After completing this programme, you will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the important technologies, practical applications, processes and actions concerning energy generation, power systems and energy markets, and the use of energy. You will be able to manage bio-energy production projects and design energy systems, utilise different numerical methods of reactor physics and analyse thermal hydraulic safety.

Renewable energy systems are one of the fastest growing industries. Recognising the sustainability challenges facing the world today, we want you to achieve a better understanding of integrated solutions to complex environmental problems through system thinking. In this Master’s programme, you will develop interdisciplinary skills in technology, management, energy production, industrial and community byproduct flows, environmental management, and economics. You will learn to identify the challenges of sustainability and to view them in a multidisciplinary way, producing solutions which cover all of the aspects of sustainability in a wide range in the society.

This is not my first experience of studying at a Finnish university. I had completed my Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering at MAMK (currently XAMK). I chose LUT to continue my studies because I liked the content of the degree programme and I was looking forward to expanding my knowledge. KEEP FOLLOWING YOUR OWN PATH I studied at the LUT School of Industrial Engineering and Management in 2012-2014. I currently work in the field of telecommunications at Ericsson. During my Master’s studies before LUT, I took part in two joint study programmes with Finnish universities. In addition, I have spent a few of my holidays in beautiful Finland and have enjoyed both studying and living there. So, when the opportunity came, I signed up for a double degree programme at Lappeenranta University of Technology without any hesitation, and I never regretted it. LUT provides plenty of opportunities for studies and leisure with a wide range of courses, social events and recreational activities. The student culture plays a great role: traditions are respected, carefully passed on, and highly valued. MAKE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE, BUT NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THE PRESENT MOMENT I’m originally from Russia and came to Finland with the aim to take part in a double degree programme: cooperation between the Moscow Power Engineering Institute and Lappeenranta University of Technology. I’ve chosen the programme in Energy Technology, Nuclear Engineering, because at Moscow University I studied thermal power engineering and it was interesting for me to learn about nuclear power. The duration of my studies in Finland was one academic year. During the spring, there were open positions on the websites of Fortum and Fennovoima and I applied to some of them. Later, I received a letter from Fortum, saying that the company was interested in my CV and invited me for an interview. I went, of course, as working at an international company was my dream! Right now, I’m working in the Nuclear Services department in the Strategy Deployment team, which has a lot of interesting projects. The knowledge I gained at LUT helps me in understanding my tasks and translating documents from English to Russian for exhibitions, for example ATOMEXPO in Moscow. I also help my coworkers (most of them Finnish) to translate letters from Russian companies concerning equipment or software delivery. It’s not as easy as it seems because English and Russian nuclear terminology is very different, and I’m responsible for translating correctly. Another task which I’m working on is finding information as accurate as possible about new-build projects in the nuclear field so that Fortum can later decide whether it is interested in them or not. I didn’t expect to find a job right after finishing my courses. Studying at LUT was hard enough for me because all the material was in English, and a lot of the terminology as well as probability analyses were new to me. Nevertheless, the classes were very interesting. We often started at 8:30 a.m., and finished only at 5-6 p.m., with a half hour break

for lunch. Moreover, most of the students had studied nuclear engineering before and were able to do their own thing after the day at the university, but I continued to study at home, as I had a lot of catching up, translating and memorizing to do. However, perhaps this was the most valuable aspect – the fact that I had to keep up with the other students and meet the same requirements. After a few months, I got used to the rhythm of the studies and understood already 95% of the lecture material as opposed to the initial 75%. Of course, I was helped by my classmates: we prepared presentations together and discussed the material together. The atmosphere was very friendly and they always supported me! I really liked the location of the university: a small city on the shore of the big Lake Saimaa. It seemed to me an ideal place to study and live. I understood that participation in this programme would teach me a lot about studying abroad and expand my horizons in general. All of these factors together convinced me to come to LUT – a decision I’ve never regretted. LUT fully met my expectations in terms of the standard of living (one of the most beautiful cities in Finland, the lake, good accessibility anywhere – whether it's a shop, a library or a university building) and great variety in student life. In general, I can say that in one year, my knowledge has been enriched in all subjects I studied, not to mention the level of my English language, which has improved a lot! My advice for students: set goals, reach them, rejoice in your small victories and enjoy them. Repeat this again and again. Focus your attention on the most important courses, on the most important things to you at the university. Make plans for the future, but never lose sight of the present moment!
