Czerwona Wieża zwana Gołębnikiem
Red Tower called Dovecote
Najwyższa w ciągu murów nadwiślańskich, usytuowana między Bramą Klasztorną i Bramą Żeglarską. Zbudowana w XIV w., ozdobiona gotycką ornamentyką. W XIX w. jej wnętrze zostało przebudowane i przeznaczone na mieszkania, a poddasze stało się siedzibą gołębi pocztowych – stąd jej nazwa. Gołębie wykorzystywał garnizon pruski do przenoszenia informacji między miastem i fortami. Do dziś w górnej części baszty zachowały się metalowe konstrukcje, na których siadały ptaki.
It is the highest tower of all those located along the Vistula river and it’s situated between two gates – Klasztorna and Żeglarska. It was built in the 14th c. and decorated with Gothic ornaments. The 14th c. the interior of the tower got reconstructed and converted into flats and the attic became the house to the post pigeons. That’s where the tower took the name from. The pigeons were used by the Prussian garrison to carry messages between the city and the forts. In the top part of the tower there are metal constructions that the pigeons used to sit on, that have survived to this day.
