The science behind silver The silver ion technology incorporated into our FortiďŹ ed nitrile examination gloves negatively aect bacteria that contaminate the surface of the glove through: Protein damage: Proteins are essential for the biological systems of life, any damage to these components causes the failure of essential functions such as energy production. Cell membrane damage: By disrupting the microbes membrane, the structural integrity of the microbe is compromised, which can cause essential nutrients to leak out and catastrophic structural failure. Oxidative damage: Antimicrobials can cause increased levels of reactive oxygen species, which can cause damage to the internal systems of the microbe. DNA interference: The genetic material of the bacteria is disrupted. Stopping the bacteria being able to replicate by blocking the copying of their genetic material, preventing reproduction.

Frequently asked questions Q. What is BioCote®? A. BioCote® is silver ion technology. It has been used in the manufacture of Unigloves® Fortified examination gloves to give the gloves antimicrobial properties. Ionic silver particles are homogeneously dispersed through the rubber polymers used to produce Unigloves® Fortified gloves. Q. Why Silver? A. Silver has been used for centuries for its abilities to aid preservation, for example, the ancient Greeks used silver vessels to keep their water fresh and Chinese Emperors ate with silver chopsticks. Recent advances in antimicrobial technology allow silver to be added to everyday products at the manufacturing stage. Silver is an ideal antimicrobial agent due to its effectiveness against a range of microorganisms. Q. How does the silver work? A. BioCote® antimicrobial technology, in the form of silver ions is added to the product prior to vulcanisation. Silver ions are present at the surface of the glove and are available to act against contaminating microbes. The silver ions bind with and irreparably damage their cells; disrupt normal functions essential to survival; stopping them from reproducing and render them harmless. Q. Why is BioCote different to other antimicrobial technologies? A. Uniquely, BioCote® have repeatedly tested the real life benefit of protected products by assessing their antimicrobial performance in places like hospitals, laboratories and food processing environments. These studies have time and time again proven the positive impact and benefit of BioCote® protected products on the environments they are used within and the people that use them. ®

Q. Are bacteria resistant to silver? A. BioCote® silver based additives do not function in the same way as antibiotics and to date, no bacteria have become resistant to BioCote® as they have to antibiotic and other antimicrobial technologies. Q. Is BioCote® effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria? A. Well known antibiotic resistant bacteria such as MRSA, VRE, CRE cannot survive on products protected with BioCote® antimicrobial technology. Q. Is BioCote® effective against H1N1 (swine influenza A)? A. Under laboratory conditions BioCote® has been shown to deactivate the H1N1 virus on the surface of polymers to which it has been added. Q. What is the expected life cycle of BioCote® protection? A. Products containing BioCote® have been subjected to 25-year accelerated life cycle testing and continue to show superior antimicrobial performance; however the maximum shelf-life of Unigloves® Fortified examination gloves is 3 years from the manufacturing date. Q. How quickly can BioCote® act against microbes? A. Within minutes: BioCote treated materials have seen reductions of up to 80% in just 15 minutes and over 99% in 2 hours.
