SCORESHEET Waikato Unicol Association Football Club Matchday Programme

Waikato Unicol AFC vs Melville United Saturday 19 May 2018

It is early days in the Premiership, yet Melville sit atop the table with their Under 23 team having three wins and two draws thus far. The U23 tag is a bit of a misnomer though, there are a few players in the Melville team who would struggle to remember what 23 was, but it is a tidy label to use for a squad.

Unicol are coming off another Chatham Cup victory, the latest one a 5-0 drubbing of Ngaruawahia AFC. That win sets us up for a replay of last years Round 2 game, in Auckland against Franklin United. Both teams will be going into this match with some confidence. In head-to-head clashes in the Federation Unicol hold a six-win three loss advantage. Coach Dan Goodwin who will be looking to build on this record, will be pleased he has a full complement of players to choose from. Expect the good goal scoring form of Riku Soejima and Luke Goodwin to feature heavily in this match while Captain Jonty Rhodes will put in another assured shift in the backline and if he has recovered from a head knock, Tom Wright will have substantial influence in the backline. In the earlier match at Jansen Park, the Reserves take on Te Puke, who are blowing hot and cold this year. Hammered 1-11 by Ngaruawahia a couple of weeks ago, they, like Unicol, either win or lose. A safe bet would be a draw, but Anthonni Hall will expect big games from the likes of stalwarts Curtis Warner and Gareth Webb and if Kirk Newman can rediscover his goal scoring mojo, realistically Unicol should canter home. The only other game at Jansen sees the Unicol Development squad (that’s our version of U23) in a Waikato Cup game against Otorohanga. Hayden Jones will be hoping cup scoring specialist Bryn Davies will help propel them into the next round. Matt Stannett will be hoping it is 136th game lucky as he searches for his first club goal.

Weeks three of grading rounds for Waikato Junior teams. A big thank you to all those parents who are coaching, managing, refereeing, getting the half time oranges, looking after other children where parents are running other teams and generally being at the games giving positive support to all the players. Clubs can’t run without your help and the players absolutely thrive on your cheering them on.
