Preseason Notes Seahawks Earn fifth NCAA berth

UNCW stormed through the CAA regular season and tournament to earn its fi fth NCAA tournament berth where it played in the Raleigh Regional hosted by NC State. The Seahawks dropped their opener to second-seeded Vanderbilt and eliminated Sacred Heart before bowing to eventual regional winner Wolfpack.

RPI Watch

uNCW Wins Third CAA Crown

The Seahawks rallied from a 6-0 defi cit to rival Delaware for a 10-8 win in the championship game of the CAA tournament, played in Harrisonburg, Va. UNCW was extended to a fourth game by the Blue Hens after UD knocked off the Seahawks, 11-9, in the fi rst championship game of the tournament.

Brooks field Home of the Seahawks

UNCW sported a record of 19-8 at Brooks Field overall and 12-3 in the league. The Seahawks will play 32 home games in 2013. Venturing to Brooks Field this season are Omaha participants Kent State and Stony Brook along with perennial powers North Carolina, NC State, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina and the College of Charleston. Brooks Field will also return to hosting the CAA Championship in 2014. UNCW hosted the tournament from 2004-2011.

To The Power Of Teal

The Seahawks slammed 56 home runs in 2012, ranking 11th nationally. Outfi elder Tyler Molinaro led the Seahawks with 16 round trippers while Andrew Cain added 12.

Ten-Year Anniversary of 2003 NCAA Team

The baseball program will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the 2003 Seahawks, who earned the program’s fi rst-ever NCAA tournament berth. That season, the Seahawks fi nished 40-23, won the CAA’s American Division and advanced to the regional fi nals of the Baton Rouge Regional hosted by LSU.

Scalf Career Record

UNCW skipper Mark Scalf enters his 22nd second season as head coach with a record of 690537-1 overall and 280-188-1 in the CAA. Scalf is just the third coach in the program’s history and is its all-time winningest coach.

Seahawks Cruise to CAA Regular Season Title

UNCW sailed through the CAA with a 24-6 record and taking the regular season title by four games over Hofstra (20-10). The Seahawks won all 10 series, including four sweeps. With their 24 wins, the Seahawks own the top two winningest seasons in the history of the CAA. UNCW posted a 25-4-1 record in 2008 and won the regular season by fi ve games.

molinaro Takes The Lead

Tyler Molinaro became the fourth Seahawk to lead the CAA in home runs, joining previous sluggers Bryan Britt (1996), Mark Carver (2008) and current assistant coach Robbie Monday (2010) as the only Seahawks to lead the league.

Coaching Staff Adds Two

UNCW welcomed Robert Woodard and Robbie Monday to the coaching staff during the summer. Woodard served as the volunteer assistant coach at UNC Chapel Hill while Monday served on former Seahawk coach Josh Simmons staff at Barton College. Woodard helped the Tar Heels to two college world series appearances as a player and one as an assistant. Monday takes over the volunteer slot with the Seahawks. Monday played two seasons for UNCW, leading the CAA in home runs as a senior with 20 in 2010.

Beginning And Ending

Andrew Cain belted his 12th round tripper of the season in his fi nal at-bat of his career against NC State in the Raleigh Regional. Earlier in the year Luke Dunlap homered in his fi rst career atbat coming against Delaware in Newark.
